Adults who use (abuse) young children to take part in street demonstrations should be prosecuted for child abuse. This is what members of the Nkowankowa community say, in reaction to the past week’s demonstrations in the town, when a problem with water supply was experienced. Children as young as eight and nine years old were forced to toyi-toyi, empty rubbish bins in the streets and cause damage to property. “Grown-ups who are guilty of using our children for their political agendas should face the full might of the law,” it is said.

The Mopani District Municipality’s water supply services were once again placed under scrutiny when workers at purification plants engaged in a strike due to alleged contractual irregularities. The week long strike, according to MDM communications manager Neil Shikwambana, included grievances on payments of over-
time and acting allowances. Residents receiving water from the MDM’s supply system were left without water for almost a week and even longer in some areas. Angry at the situation, residents of Nkowankowa in turn took to the streets to protest against the municipality. According to them, there had been no warnings from
the court as the radio station failed to pay its rent for the premises belonging to Tzaneen Staal Industrieë. According to Prinsloo it is not the first time that a court order was issued against the radio station for rent in arrears. The station manager of GTFM, Mr Tibaso Ma’apula, said he was also not aware of the court order and referred any enquiries on the matter to Gteda.
the MDM prior to the close of pipes and the municipality did not assist with water in terms of tankers until after a number of days had passed. Schools and businesses in the area say they were severely affected by the situation, with some having to close shop because they work with water and were in fear
of protesters. On Friday, angry protestors forced almost all schools in the area to send pupils home. According to Shikwambana, the worker’s strike was over and grievances settled with by Wednesday. — Photos (at the top of the page) and report by Joy Mojela
