GTM: can it survive?
Can the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) survive without the intervention of higher authority? This has become the million dollar question. The ruling party (ANC) in the council is divided, the GTM’s cash flow is not healthy at all, senior officials and the leadership in the council seem to be rattled and have become ignorant to the extent that they even ignored the minister of cooperative gov-
ernance and traditional affairs when he asked for information. To add insult to injury, there is pressure on the Hawks, Scopa and the Auditor General to investigate the affairs of the GTM and an implosion of the municipality is said to be unavoidable — and will cause a crisis before the end of this year. In the meantime the GTM’s chief financial officer is acting as municipal manager and

the council will have to spend another R1 million or more “to get rid of” the previous MM. A serious lack of strong and visionary leadership is said to be a major problem and the GTM is being compared with a bobbing ship on stormy waters. We said last week that we will publish some more “interesting” information about the GTM’s legal matters, and we do so on Page 3.
