Itumeleng Charmaine Letwaba, the suspended director of water services and infrastructure of the Mopani District Municipality, will again appear in the Tzaneen Magistrates Court on 18 February to face nine charges of fraud. She is out on bail of R50 000. Her last appearance was on 15 December, when the case was remanded.

Nine (!) distinctions for Merensky High School’s 2014 head boy, seven each for the top performers of Stanford Lake College and Ben Vorster High School, six for Merensky’s second best performer and five for Meridian College’s top Grade 12 pupils in 2014...
Each of these schools can boast with a 100% pass rate, there are handfulls of distinctions between them and there is also a large number of so-called Bachelor passes (may study for a degree at a university). Top achiever is Merensky’s Rean Venter, with nine distinctions, followed by Ben Vorster’s Karabo Moremi and Anika Pienaar, as well as SLC’s Josh Selfe with seven distinctions each. Right on their heels were Merensky’s Benna van Kasterop and Ben Vorster’s Nsovo Shandale and El-louise van der Merwe with six each (their photos inside on page 8) and Nhluvuko Mamafa of Meridian with five distinctions (plus a number of “fivers” from other schools). Operation butt-kick
A major clean up of municipalities in Mopani, to root out corrupt officials and/or fraud, corruption, money laundering and nepotism, is on the cards. So says a senior ANC member who has asked not to be named. In the latest development in the Mopani District Mu-
nicipality, controversial municipal manager Tim Maake has been given an opportunity and seven days to convince the MDM that he shouldn’t be suspended. • Read more about Maake and his apparent problems on page 7.
