Matlou pushed into wilderness Axed Mopani District Mayor Joshua Matlou
A group of ANC members took to Facebook over the last week, to express their frustration at axed Mopani District Municipality (MDM) mayor Joshua Matlou, for allegedly refusing to resign. Sources within the party claimed that Matlou has not yet tendered his resignation as mayor. ANC regional secretary Basikopo Makamu said that Matlou’s letter of resignation was received and that they are awaiting the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) appointment procedure in order to inaugurate Ms Nkakareng Rakgoale as the new MDM mayor. The MDM’s speaker will issue
Nkakareng’s date of inauguration, added Makamu. Matlou is said to remain as a PR councillor. SA Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) provincial secretary Simon Mathe said that “Matlou will be missed for his openness”. However, when it was announced by the ANC that Matlou had been recalled, it was openly said that his recall was as a result of underperformance. ANC Provincial Secretary Knocks Seabi then said “this kind of intervention is aimed at strengthening the functioning and political management of the different municipal councils and improve the management of
ANC councillors’ performance in these councils”. The ANC also said in a statement they were recalled after considering the weaknesses, challenges and successes in their respective municipalities Seabi further said the ANC will also restructure a Political Management Team in the MDM.
