Agri-plan A combined effort between AgriLimpopo and the Department of Agriculture in the province will bring new life to agriculture and land reform in Limpopo. A workshop on land affairs and agricultural development was held in Polokwane, to establish a sensible strategy towards land matters and the implications of certain laws regarding agricultural development. It was attended by the MEC for agriculture, Ms Joy Matshoge, and a delegation of her Department, as well as more than 120 farmers from all over Limpopo. According to Mr Willem van Jaarsveld, CEO of AgriLimpopo, the outcome was positive and constructive, with the agreement that all planning will be based on the National Development Plan, the Limpopo Development Plan and the Integrated Development Plan of the various municipalities. Among the issues raised were restitution claims which hampered agricultural production over the past fifteen years, because land owners could not present their property for production credit. The maintaining of market value is intensely connected with the security value of land.

Therefore it is important for the land owner and commercial banks to secure this value. The perception of the two camps in the ANC about the role of the government in the economy obstructs growth in efforts to develop agriculture’s economy on a sound base. The production among black farmers has only increased by one percent over the past twenty years. More land has not contributed to increased production. The group also discussed the tendency to increase lawmaking on top of the already limiting laws like the Labour Act, which interfere with agricultural growth. During the meeting the Land Claims Commissioner, Mr Mapotho, requested land owners to contact him on any outstanding land claims. He promised to remove all claims rom the Government Gazette that are not in the final stage of completion f. This will only be applicable to Limpopo and not the other provinces. Van Jaarsveld reiterated that the workshop led to a valuable bond between AgriLimpopo and the Department of Agriculture, which will result in proper decision making to the benefit of all parties involved.
