Water crisis
Thousands of residents in the jurisdiction of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) and the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM) are facing a severe drought of a different kind. Lepelle Water, the bulk supplier of water to the Mopani District Municipality (MDM), was yesterday at the time of the Bulletin going to print still engaged in “desperate” talks to try and avoid cutting the supply to the MDM, due to non-payment. Residents in Nkowankowa and Modjadjislkoof will be the worst affected, it is said. Lepelle North Water spokesman Simon Mpamonyane said yesterday that the MDM has been uncooperative since last year September “after we entered into a payment agreement with them”. “We are left with no option but to take drastic steps against them for their due payments. We will, as from tomorrow (today, Friday), reduce the water flow pressure by 30%,” said Mpamonyane. “We are not

allowed by law to cut the water supply at this stage by 100%,” he added. Mpamonyane was not prepared to disclose the amount of money owed by the MDM. “Our directors are still engaged in discussions and it would be unethical to go into detail now,” he said. He confirmed, however, that today (Friday) it will be a matter of “reg of weg” (payment is made or the flow of water will be cut). MDM spokesman Neil Shikwambana was not available for comment at the time of going to print. • The MDM has become notorious for not paying their creditors punctually. The Sheriff has recently attached ten computers, four photocopiers and a fridge in terms of a warrant of execution that was granted by the court in favour of the Bulletin, for money owed to us by the MDM since early last year. — Arnold Mabunda arnold@bulletin.us.com
Feared horse disease outbreak Equestrians and horse owners in the Tzaneen area are warned against an outbreak of African Horse Sickness (AHS), which claimed at least five horses the past month, while several horses are still under treatment. Ms Gabby Haarhoff at Lushof lost three of her animals because of AHS, despite the fact that the horses were vaccinated well ahead of time. Another horse owner, Ms Nicola Strydom, also from Lushof, lost two of her best horses. The head of the SPCA in Tzaneen, Ms Ellie Potgieter, said their horse on the premises is undergoing treatment for the disease and she hopes to pull him through. The disease is known country-wide and a restriction or-
der was issued in the Cape Province on the relocation of horses out of infected areas to other provinces. AHS is a highly infectious and non-contagious vector born viral disease endemic to Africa, characterized by respiratory damage and accompanied by fever and loss of appetite. The vector host is the Culicoides midge which spreads the AHS virus, with a mortality rate of up to 95% among horses. Some of the cases in and around Tzaneen was attended to by veterinarian dr Pieter Cordier. His Animal Clinic and NTK are the main suppliers of vaccinations against AHS. He suspects that early vaccinations are ignored by some horse owners because it does not guarantee a 100% effectiveness. He also said that the relative warm winter may have caused a widespread midge population which promoted the disease outbreak. Ms Potgieter said that the outbreak should be seen as serious and vaccination against the disease must be done diligently, despite the fact that it does not guarantee the safety of affected horses.

SLC chief is off to World Cup If you have been watching SuperSport you will have noticed that Holland is currently hosting the World Cup Hockey for both men and women. Although the TV coverage focuses on the senior tournament, a number of other internationals will be played at the same time. The World Cup plays host to 74 international teams at Senior, Masters (over 40 years old) and Grand Masters(over 60 years old) level. This year’s tournament is being hosted by the Royal Dutch Hockey Board and is being played on sixteen astro turfs in and around Rotterdam and Den Haag. Mr Craig Carolan, the Headmaster of Stanford Lake College, has once again been selected to represent the SA Masters team at this prestigious event. In August last year, as part of the preparation for the World Cup, the SA Masters team won silver at the European Open in Belfast. Carolan ended that tournament as leading goal scorer with seven goals in seven games for his country and will be hoping to carry this form through to the World Cup. South Africa started their Master’s campaign yesterday, with their opening match versus the USA. SA have been drawn in the same pool as the USA as well as Australia, Pakistan and Ireland and will be targeting a place in the semi-finals come Friday next week. • We wish Carolan and all the SA teams the best of luck as they take on the best in the world in Holland.
