Vlieg verpes boere

Too soon?

Tzaneen is bleeding Something has caught up with Tzaneen. Could it have been the moratorium of a few years ago, when no new electricity connections were possible and businesses located in Polokwane and other places? Could it be the neglect of the town that make people no longer keen to move to Tzaneen? Is it the depressed economy of the country that is catching up with our town and area? There are many speculative theories... but one thing is true and that is that Tzaneen stands

GTM appoints acting MM The Greater Tzaneen Municipality this week suspended municipal manager Masiye Mankabidi, following several allegations of misconduct against him. Mankabidi allegedly approved payments and a contract worth millions of rands without following proper procedures and advice. One example is a payment of R7,6m to a road construction company which is behind schedule with its work. The same company had a contract of R48 million approved by Mankabidi, against the advice of the tender bid committee. Mr Obby Mkhombo has been appointed as acting municipal manager, following an urgent council meeting on Friday. He began his working career as a traffic officer in 1984. He obtained several diplomas and he was promoted often. In 1997 he was appointment as Limpopo’s traffic chief. In February 2002 he joined the GTM as director of community services, a position that he still holds. He has never stopped studying and he holds more than one degree and a number of diplomas. Among them are an honors degree in criminal justice and a masters degree in public administration. He wants to mentor

and instruct managers and supervisors to be better leaders. He said a culture of professionalism is key for the municipality. “Corruption has to be minimized. It is essential to ensure people receive the required services and that all systems are working properly,” he said.

no chance to remain Limpopo’s biggest town (Polokwane has become a small city). Neither does Tzaneen stand a chance to remain a dynamic growth point. Businesses are closing down, relocating, scaling down and everywhere one goes, the same doom and gloom of a town that is suffocating is sensed. The challenges facing the councillors and officials of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality to steer the town into a new prosperous future, are immense.

Party posters on traffic signs illegal The Greater Tzaneen Municipality responded quickly early this week and removed illegally displayed political party posters from road traffic signs in Tzaneen. The Bulletin made enquiries about the matter, after election campaign posters of especially two political parties were fixed to traffic lights and route signs on the R71 where it crosses Danie Joubert Street. Mr Neville Ndlala, spokesman, for the GTM, confirmed that displaying any posters on road signs are illegal. He said the National Road Traffic Act prohibits fixing advertising material on road traffic signs or tampering with signs in any way. “Parties who contravene this stipulation in the Act will be held accountable and fined for every poster found tied to a traffic sign. With elections drawing closer, the GTM especially assigned traffic officials to check posters displayed on or at unauthorised

Brigadier comes home

Gen Maggy Mathebula, Brig Christine Bench, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe and CPF chairperson Uwe Kroh are seen here at the welcoming by Gen Mathebula and other senior officers.

The SAPS in Tzaneen welcomed the return of former Bolobedu Police Chief, Brig Christine Bench, who served as Bushbuckridge’s Police chief before returning to Tzaneen. Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed the news that Bench will be taking over the cluster from Brig Diana Mashele, who has been transferred to serve in her home town of Bushbuckridge. In her welcome note cluster commander Gen Maggy Mathebula said “I expect Brigadier Bench to hit the ground running and work hard. Normally we say a new broom swipes swiftly and as such I believe that under her leadership, the Police will serve the

community of Tzaneen and give them the kind of service they expect.” Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairman Uwe Kroh welcomed Bensch. He said “I believe that in partrnership with the police we can ensure the safety of our residents and that nothing should be swiped under the carpet.” Bench briefly said that she believed in an open door policy and that her rank does not make her higher from anyone to consult with her. She further urged residents to build trust with the Police and not to take the law into their own hands. — Arnold Mabunda

En so meer. Tzaneen benodig suurstof. Dringend!

Orlando Chauke (who also took the photo) reports that she didn’t shy away from showing her happiness and excitement after she had received her results. She is one of Limpopo’s top pupils and obtained distinctions in Xitsonga, English, mathematics, physical science,

agricultural science, life science and life orientation. “I have my parents to thank for my success. They provided me with the necessary support and study material to help me out during my studies,” she told Bulletin. • The collection of the information pertaining to the matric results was done by Bulletin’s Retha Nel, Beaunice Mnisi, Amelia de Ridder and Martina Jege. * Turn to page 3 for the full details of the matric results of ten high schools in our area.

Radio station at last Giyani to finally have its own radio station after a long wait

Greater Giyani municipal spokesperson Steve Mavunda during the viewing of the new Giyani Community Radio station [GCR] before it goes on air

Cliff Moraba marketing manager and business developer at GCR during the viewing of the station before it goes on air

The long wait by the community of Giyani for their own radio station called; Giyani Community Radio (GCR 106FM) which was supposed to have launched in June last year but delayed due to the upgrade of their studio is finally over. Their studio, which is equipped with new technology of digital system instead of the old analogue system which many radio stations are still using, is now in full functional. “People used to call it Facebook-radio, and now we want to inform them that the Facebook-radio is now live on air, our fans will now be able to tune to it and experience what we have been cooking for them all this time while we were struggling with the upgrade,” said Clifford Moraba, its marketing manager and business developer. According to him, all that remained was for Eskom to come and do the “electricity capacitation” for the station’s transformer in order to function, since it did not operate on ordi-

nary electricity. “Transformers need special electricity in order to function, they cannot be run using ordinary electricity that run other appliances,” he said adding that, by next week Saturday the station would be live on air. Speaking at the station, Giyani municipal spokesperson Steve Mavunda said the station would not only benefit the ordinary community but the government in terms of making the communities aware of municipality’s services. “If there’s an urgent problem regarding services that need to be sent out to people we will obviously run to the station to ask for a slot to address the people,” he said. When asked on who would fund the running expense of the station, Mavunda said the municipality would be bound to leave aside a small budget for it since it is a community radio station aimed at helping the community rather than making profit.

If you can dream it, you can do it Six under-privileged young men and women from an informal settlement near Rustenburg, accompanied by three adults from the Tsolofelo Mission, visited Stanford Lake College (SLC) as part of an outreach project to launch the “Dream an’ do” Foundation. They were given the opportunity to learn some thinking and problem solving skills as well as experience a wide variety of adventure and educational activities in and around the campus. They were nervous to start with, but quickly relaxed and fully engaged in all on offer. First, they had a tour of the campus and learnt about the Eco-Schools project and how important it is to protect and conserve the natural life in and around the school property. They were then joined by a group of weekend boarders in a game of touch rugby. The following day they had a cultural and historical tour in Haenertsburg and a visit to the Crocodile Ranch at Agatha. The smiles did not stop, in spite of the terri-

fying walk across the bridge over croc infested waters. After a productive morning spent with Mr Carolan, learning thinking and confidence skills, they went on a canopy tour on the zip lines in the Magoebaskloof valley. A visit to this area is not complete without a trip to Kruger National Park. Again, this was a whole new experience for them seeing animals in the wild, and they could not stop talking about the lions, cheetahs and elephants they saw close up. Finally, they went on a tour of the local cheese farm at Wegraakbosch and learnt about organic cheese making. The six young people experienced things that they had never dreamt of before, leaving with what they said were the best memories they had ever had. They made many friends at Stanford and expressed grateful and sincere thanks to everyone involved for the knowledge they gained and the experiences they enjoyed.

Mayor celebrates birthday at crèche The mayor of the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM), Mr Godfrey City Modjadji, celebrated his birthday with children from Lepulana Crèche at Lemondokop in Sekgosese outside Modjadjiskloof recently. The crèche has 89 children, 53 of which are boys and 36 are girls. It is the largest crèche in the Greater Letaba Municipal area. According to Modjadji he had decided to cele-

brate his 44th birthday at the crèche. He said he used his own money to buy a cake and other goodies which he shared with the children. Modjadji said he was enjoying the day with the children. “I am happy to celebrate my birthday at a crèche in a dusty village,” he said. According to his personal assistant, Ms Perpetual Raolane, the mayor celebrates his birthday

every year by spending time with people from different communities. The celebration was also attended by the ANC chief whip, councillors, the local chief, municipality’s social development committee and members of the executive committee. —Michael Sakuneka

Plasies skitter by toneelspelkompetisie Mynhardt Bouwer

Top achievers at Duiwelskloof

Pupils from Duiwelskloof Primary School are in the top five academic achievers for the first term.

Gr 7: Sindi Kapa, Didi Boke, Lané Badenhorst, Bianca Brummer and Shibu Ramango

Gr 6: Wandri Janse van Rensburg, Maryke Basson, Tenay Meyer, Khutso Mohlele and (insert) Judi Fleischman

Pryse sluit Kyknet televisiekontrakte, kontant asook studiebeurse in.

Die Can Can-meisies se energie was aansteeklik.

Appel pupils are TV stars

It was a dream come true for eight learners from Appel Combined School in Magoebaskloof when they were invited to feature in the Barclays Africa TV commercial that will be released in a month. The commercial was filmed at Debegeni Falls recently. It was a wonderful experience for the young boys to meet the filming crew and see all the sophisticated filming equipment. The cold, rainy weather did not put a damper on their excitement as they took instructions from the director. Before returning to school, the learners had lunch during which they had an opportunity to chat to the film crew.

Die Nyatis (tweede span) was by die Grootvlei-rugbyweek in Preto-

Giyani Hot Spurs have cut the gap at the top of the SAFA Second Division league after a last minutes goal by Ntwanano Maluleke gave them a 2-1 victory over Magesi FC in a match played at Giyani on Saturday. Their opening goal came in the first few minutes of the first half through their captain Oskar Mathebula. However, after the goal the visitors threw everything at Hot Spurs in search of an equalizing goal. Their luck, although short-lived, finally came in the second half just a few minutes before the referee’s final whistle, when Donald Mokondolela sneaked pass Hot Spurs’ defence and shot straight to the net to level the score to 1-1. However, five minutes later Hot Spurs’ striker Ntwanano Maluleke, who had just come on as a substitute, took a long free-kick shot outside the eighteenth that went straight to the visitors’ net and put the home team in the lead again. The free-kick did not only save Hot Spurs from drawing at their home ground, but it also came as a relief from the Hot Spurs’ fans. Their coach, Fannie Bilankulu, had been counting on winning this game, in order to gain an inch up at the league’s scale and to close up the gap caused by their earlier slide to a lower position. Just as he had wished, the results moved Giyani Hot Spurs to position three after they had recently slumped from trading around position 2 and 3 to position 5 and 6. Spurs’ next game will be against Winners Park next weekend. “To win the league we have to treat each game like a derby, and this is what we’re going to do with this coming match,” Bilankulu said.

“A child educated only at school is an uneducated child.” — George Santayana
