Maruleng’s municipal leadership’s contempt for the law is the catalyst for a full scale war brewing between rate payers and municipal officials.
Residents of Hoedspruit are preparing for a show down with the municipal manager of the Maruleng Municipality, about language issues, the IDP, alleged corruption and a host of smaller issues. Afriforum’s branch in Hoedspruit is rather actively busy to address these matters. Unfortunately we could not communicate with one of the driving forces behind the Afriforum initaitive, Ms Marie Helm (vice chairman of the branch), for the latest developments before going to print. She is a practicing hypnotherapist and was working in Makhado/Louis Trichardt this week, where we couldn’t trace her. The Bulletin is in posession of a range of documents which we need to first discuss with her. We trust that we will be able to report on these sensitive matters in next week’s edition.
Nana Meriwether, Miss USA 2012, is seen here surrounded by children from “her” school
‘Our’ Miss USA is here! Miss USA 2012, Nana Meriwether who was born in Acornhoek, arrived in Hoedspruit, accompanied by Mrs SA 2012, Lynné de Jager. Nana obviously has a very special bond with this part of the Lowveld. Although she moved back to the States with her family at the age of three, she very much regards South Africa as home in her heart and comes here two or three times a year. Her mom, Mary, has kept South
African culture alive in their home through food, music, art and movies. Nana, her mom Mary and dad Delano visited Meriwether School at Zitha Village, a project funded and coordinated by the Meriwether Foundation. The school takes care of orphaned and vulnerable children. As a co-founder of the Foundation, Nana has a very strong focus on humanitarian work, as her parents have led by example by helping those in

need in southern Africa for more than thirty years. “But this trip has been a real eye opener for me. I didn’t know how endangered rhinos were! We don’t hear about rhino poaching in the US,” says Nana. ‘The plight of rhinos has really hit me hard and I have decided to adopt it as a cause. I will carry it back to the States. We need to create a social movement against rhino poaching,” she said.
