MISS USA End days for online gambling: Seen in the photo is what may appear to be an ordinary internet café… However, it actually is an illegal online gambling café. The Internet Entertainment Café is situated in Peace Street on the upper level of Tzaneen Crossing mall.
The Limpopo Gambling Board will soon be paying a visit to the Internet Entertainment Café in Tzaneen to shut it down for good. With the increase of illegal online gambling in South Africa, Tzaneen is also adding to the statistics of gambling businesses. Internet Entertainment Café, situated in Peace Street on the upper level of Tzaneen Crossing mall, has been operating illegally for over a year, increasingly drawing gamblers from all over. According to Mr Robert Lekoto (law enforcement inspector) of the Limpopo
Gambling Board, online gambling in South Africa is illegal and there is no license for online gambling issued by the National Gambling Board. Lekoto said that they were aware of the illegal online gambling operation in Tzaneen and will soon come and shut it down. He further added that the board has also closed down another illegal online gambling operation in Giyani. Mr Elvis Maluleka who is an employee at the Internet Entertainment Café said he only communicates with his employer through Skype,
a social network medium. We attempted to contact the alleged owner of Entertainment Café, Mr Barren Leon. At the time of going to print, Leon had still not accepted our invitation on Skype and we were unable to get a comment from him. In 2011 the government declared online gambling illegal in South Africa and any person found guilty of breaching the gambling legislature could be fined up to R10 million or face up to ten years imprisonment. —Martina Jege
