Numb & Dumb
STRIKE
Commuters still inconvenienced
MDM remains silent and evasive
The Mopani District Municipalty — normally rather talkative and ostentatious about their public relations doings — have been struck by numbness and dumbness regarding the arrest of their municipal manager. Consistent rumours of more arrests of senior officials, the scandal of their senior manager for water services who was arrested some weeks ago for having forged her CV and the
continuous whispering in the ANC’s inner circles that the executive mayor is “on thin ice” further compounds the issue. Enquiries about the persistent rumours that at least two more senior officials have been arrested resulted in the MDM’s spokesman, Mr Neil Shikwambana, saying on Thursday (yesterday) that they could not comment on the matter. “You must ask the police,” he said.
The municipal manager, Mr Tim Maake, was arrested in Lenyenye some three weeks ago. It was kept quiet (almost a secret) and not even Limpopo’s head of the Police’s media department could or would confirm it. In fact, it is still almost impossible to find anybody prepared to talk about the shock arrest. The head of water services of the MDM (a department that is clearly in disarray and
failing to honor their obligations towards the GTM, causing huge problems for the GTM), Ms Itumeleng Letwaba, is to appear in court again soon, on charges of fraud. Political observers say the MDM is riddled with nefarious activities and that Mr Josua Matlou, the executive mayor, could be expected to face responsibility for many alleged wrongdoings in the administration of the MDM.
The GTM’s controversial head of marketing and communication, Mr Thulani Twala, abrubtly resigned and in announcing it, he rebuked the GTM and its councillors in no uncertain terms. Read his full statement on page 8.
No real progress has been made to resolve the strike of bus drivers of Great North Transport (GNT) and commuters in the Lowveld of Limpopo, like those in the rest of the province, have to rely on minibus taxis to get around. A spokesperson for GNT confirmed yesterday that negotiations between the union and the company are ongoing, but that no end to the strike is in sight.
