Die GTM kry nog ‘n

BLOEDNEUS Good news: The Tzaneen police’s traditional dance group will be heading to Canada next week. The group has been invited to the International Po-

lice Women’s conference in St John. The dancers will be performing their traditional dances for the big group of delegates attending the conference.

Photo: Martina Jege Caught by our cameras were Mss Annah Mashele, Const Joyce Khosa, Mss Elize du Toit (chief admin clerk), Joyce Maluleke, Flora Nkuna, Capt Jenney Meyer and Const Jessica Mathebula, doing a traditional dance.

Abandoned 2 The Police have failed after more or less eleven months to reply to our numerous enquiries about the new Police station in Letsitele. In the meantime we have obtained information that whilst the initial contract was for R28 million, the amount has

escalated to R88 million! We have made another alarming discovery about this project and we will publish details of this latest development next week.

• Don’t miss next week’s edition of your newspaper for more info.

Good news for Tzaneen: Just say NO! That should do the trick in a protest, but to strip age. Clearly they transgressed the law, but no action was taken down and protest naked in public is beyond common decency. It is ironic that women appear to objectify themselves and doing the credibility of a valid united women’s voice untold dam-

by police that were “uncertain” about what to do. Ja-Nee... The photo was taken during Tuesday’s protest at the GTM’s head office in Tzaneen for service delivery by women from Petanenge.

Catherine IvesonBezuidenhout Hang him! Of eerder bid vir hom.

Vlieg ken boelies.

Sowaar as vet...

Roy Hurter van Tzaneen skryf per e-pos: Kyk, oorle William Shakespeare het onder meer gese: ”to thy self be true”.

Ek weet nie hoe ‘n vrou se kop werk nie (mind you, hier weet ek is ek nie alleen nie). Maar dom! Of toe nie!

Wel so het ek gedink.

Nou wonder ek, is ek regtig stadig? Ek vra maar net.

What will it be: Tzaneng, Tzanana or will it stay Tzaneen? Part 4 The meaning of Tzannen and its origin by the department of arts and culture, RSA: The department of arts and culture in its list of local and district municipality’s names defines the meaning and origin of the word Tzaneen as follws:

Tzaneen is said to be derived from the Pedi word “tsana”. Several interpretations have been linked to the word tsana, the first being during the times of Chief Makgoba, tsaneng was a meeting place. The second interpretation is that “tsana” means a basket since the municipal area is surrounded by mountains making a shape of a basket. Lastly, “tsana” also means weaving. It is said that the local people used to gather around and weave. Source: Place Names; Department of arts and culture’s list of local and district municipality’s names. First published at: http://sagns.dac.gov.za/local_authorities.asp Analysis of the above definition and origin of Tzaneen by the department of arts and culture: The third column from left side of the grid above attempts to define the possible meaning and origin of the word Tzaneen. In the first instance the word “tsana” as associated with Tzaneen is not only a Pedi word but a Northern Sotho word as well, in this case. The word is often related to the end syllable of SeSotho or Northern Sotho language “-ana” which implies either appreciation for goodness , beautifulness, or endearment and belittling or diminutive like the word motse becomes motsana, mosadi becomes mosadinyana or mosatšana, botse becomes botsenyana or botsana and lerotse becomes lerotsenyana or

It seems that the majority of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s councillors are favouring a name change for Tzaneen. Lekgolo Lazarus Ramalepe and Phetole David Mohubidu from Tzaneen say NO to a name change. They have researched the issue and we will present it over the next couple of weeks.

lerotsana, and so on and on. In the second instance ‘tsaneng” is not and was never associated with Chief Makgoba as it is claimed to be interpreted as such, but with Chief Maupa of the BaTsanene Community: hence, him being praised as “Maupa, Maupa ha se lešoto MoTsanene!”, meaning: Maupa, Maupa what a fortunate man — theTzaneener)! MoTsanene means the Tzaneener. This is what I mentioned earlier on in this document of the possible misconception of the interpretations or of what was said because Mr. Menno Klapwijk on page 6 of his book says of Kgoši Maupa by one of his “… Bantu employees : “He told me that a Chief Mahupa, who was a Chief of Bantu tribe south of Duiwelskloof between 1880 and 1900, was also called Tsaneng Mahupa.” The statement “Tsaneng Mahupa” is possibly interpreted as and derived from: ‘Maupa MoTsanene; meaning: Maupa the Tzaneener!’. The third instance of interpretation is that “… tsana means an open basket since the municipal area is surrounded by mountains making a shape of a basket” is a fallacy. In Northern Sotho, part of which KheTsanene is part of the languages, we call an open basket ‘Tshaana’ and not “tsana”. Therefore, the interpretation of the word “tsana” as associ-

ated with a basket is, unless otherwise explained, something else that is not associated with the languages of the indigenous local people of Tsanene and the surrounding tribal areas. The fourth notion that is also misleading is that “tsana” also means weaving. It is mentioned that the local people used to gather around and weave.” In the local language of the indigenous people of Tsanene weaving or to weave is to ‘Ho loha’ in KheTsanene and other traditional local communities or ‘go loga’ in a standardised Northern Sotho language. Weaving of food wood containers like tshaana, leselo, kheroto and mmanki or basket has been a customary practice by, mostly the male members (individually and separately) of the households in the area of Tsanene and the other surrounding communities, namely BaNareng BaLetswalo, BaThlabine BaMogoboya, BaKgaga BaMaake, BaNareng BaSekororo, BaKone BaMametje, BaPhalaborwa Makhushwane BaMalatji, BaPhalaborwa BaSelwanan Malatji, BaLobedu BaModjadji, BaTsonga tribes and others, such that they did no have to come together and weave to an extend that it justifies the name and naming of Tsanene. This notion is dismissed by Mr Menno Klapwijk as he argued that “Moreover, a Tsana is not a basket found exclusively in Tzaneen. It is found everywhere in the Letaba District, from North of Mujadji location to the tribal areas South of the Echo Caves and to the East in Mozambique. The Tsongas on the Mozambique coast are great “tsana” makers.” (p. 4). As said above the word tsana is used by the local people of the Northern Sotho group as an end syllable for either appreciation for goodness or beautifulness or belittling.

Celeste was vir drie maande in ‘n Pretoriase hospitaal.

Volgens haar was hulle stomgeslaan oor die meisie vir wie daar voorheen so min hoop was. V a n d a g kan Celeste al kleure en vorms sien.

Municipality sends a stern warning to land invaders Nearly four years since the Greater Giyani Municipality (GGM) demolished houses built on its land in Section F and other areas around the town, it has made it clear again that they wouldn’t tolerate land invasion, by removing a fence around a portion of land in the CBD next to community hall. The fence encircled a portion of land in the town being claimed by the Maselesele family as their property. One of the family members who refused to talk to the media, tried in vain to stop municipal workers accompanied by the police from removing the fence. He argued that the matter was “still being considered by the high court,” and therefore the GGM could not remove the fence. The land in question is part of the land that was claimed by the community of the Siyandhani royal family. In 2010 the government, through the Land Claims Commission, paid about R10 million to the community of Siyandhani to settle their claim. The street vendors who operated in the area welcomed the GGM’s action, since the fence deprived them of trading in the area. A spokesman for the GGM issued a stern warning that the GGM will not exercise mercy when people invade its land and build il-

legal structures. “We urge everybody to first check with us or seek authorisation before erecting any structure in and area around the town,” he said.

• Has the ability to share. • Is helpful about the house with chores and is able to complete simple tasks. • Is quite comfortable when playing with a small group of friends. • Can look after her own personal needs like washing and drying her hands. • When a new activity is offered, is prepared to join in.

• Can bunny hop. • Can hop a few steps on either foot. • Is not unduly restless or apathetic. • Is able to reach to her right shoulder with her left hand over the top of the head and vice versa. MENTAL SKILL • Can talk about a recent event or experience sensibly with some degree of fluency. • Enjoys stories and is able to listen without fidgeting too much. • Recognises colours and knows their names • Knows her own last name, address and telephone number.

• When instructions are given, is happy to follow them.

• Can remember, in essence, what her favourite stories are about.

PHYSICAL SKILL • Can deal with buttons, zips and shoe laces.

• Pronunciation, enunciation, making up sentences, is fairly fluent. • Already has memorized some childhood songs and rhymes.

• Can play finger games, is able to cut with scissors, can manage a large blunt needle and thread, string beads, and other small skills of manual dexterity.

• Loves joining in singing whether tonedeaf or not. • Shows a desire to read and is interested in books or other reading material.

• Can catch and throw a ball, though not necessarily overarm.

• In games that you play at home with other children, joins in and follows instructions when a new game is played.

• Has sufficiently good balance to walk along a wall or a beam.

• Registered. By law all crèches are required to be registered with the local municipality. Each crèche will need to subscribe to a set of regulations, like the child to caregiver ratio, etc. Health inspectors will frequently visit the facilities to ensure that the premises are kept clean and that there is no potential health or danger risks. • Clean. When visiting the crèche, observe how staff interact and care for the kids! Are the children clean and is there constant supervision. Ask to look at the kitchen were the meals are prepared. Visit the bathrooms and make a point to inspect the play area, it is well kept and safe? Has equipment been well-maintained? • Supervised. Make enquires about the crèche supervisor or the owner and find out if they will remain at the crèche throughout the day. • Well organized. Are the babies kept separate in a nursery and are the older children separated by age? • Well staffed. Are there enough staff members to provide proper care for the each and every child? The other aspects that will form part of the crèche selection process include: • Meals. Are meals provided? If so, what type of meals and do they offer meals for kids who are allergic to certain food groups. • Cost. It is all very well choosing the best possible crèche for your child but it is pointless if parents will not be able to pay the fees. Look for a good quality crèche, which has affordable fees. Certain crèches request that parents supply the mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks.

• Ask if any additional items need to be supplied. Over and above the monthly crèche fees, there are some crèches that ask parents to provide items such as boxes of tissues, toilets rolls, etc. Take these extra costs into account when working out your budget. • Enquire as to the type of discipline methods which are used? Do you agree with them? • Location – should the crèche be located close to work or close to home? Most parents opt for a crèche which is situated close to their home, however a crèche based close to work can have its advantages. In the event that a child falls ill, parents will not need to fight their way through traffic to get to the facility. A crèche which is close to home will allow both kids and parents the chance to interact with other families within their local community. • Are there extramural activities offered at the crèche, such as pottery and art lessons, monkeynastics, swimming or dancing classes? Are these offered free of charge, or will they be an additional cost? • Is the crèche able to assist with potty training? • What security measures are in place? Is there a procedure to be followed when children are collected? • Is there a swimming pool, and if so, is the pool securely enclosed and 100% safe? • Will the crèche close over the school holidays? • What time does the facility open in the mornings and will latecomers be fined?

Checklist when looking for a crèche:

Checklist for school readiness: SOCIAL SKILLS • Is liked and accepted by other children and does not take up an aggressive or martyred stance when faced with difficulties.

Facebook: search “Laeveld Bulletin”

• Kinders van 0 - 3 jaar • Alle etes ingesluit (behalwe baba melk) • Tye: 06:30 tot 17:30 • Vir liefdevolle kindwees versorging! • Klein groep (maksimum 20 kinders) John Smith St. 21, Aquapark Martie Kriel - 082 732 3339

• Formal classes for tots usually begin at the age of 3. In these classes teachers use fun lesson plans and children are taught to identify different colours and numbers through play, while at the same time their gross and fine motor skills are developed. Does the crèche offer formal classes? • Does the crèche have a Grade 0 or Grade R class? This class will help preschoolers to become schoolready. Do not be afraid to ask questions and speak to the other moms at the crèche. If your child is old enough, be sure to ask their opinion. You are entitled to, as a parent, ask questions and inspect the facilities and your aim is to make 100% sure that when you walk out of the facility doors each day that your child will be well cared for and will be happy. A crèche which is well run and properly organized will have numerous benefits for both you and your child. If possible, try to visit a few crèches in your area and make a comparison of what each crèche is able to provide, the monthly fees charged by each care facility and what aspects of each crèche you particularly liked and which you felt were areas of concern! sig. — Amelia de Ridder amelia@bulletin.us.com

A cyclist who creates awareness from Kampala to Cape Town

“My vriende het tydens my terapie alles saam my gedoen.

Mr. Mark McNamara travels through the heart of Africa in an attempt to raise awareness around the world for orphaned and vulnerable children of Africa. Seen in the photo are McNamara and Ms Louise Batty from Keep the Dream 196 and Katie Dee, the beloved koala (on the bicycle at the back).

An Australian primary school teacher and seasoned traveler, Mr Mark McNamara, took a year’s unpaid leave from work in his attempt to travel through Africa on his bicycle. He paid a visit to Tzaneen after cycling through eight countries over a period of six months. McNamara and his accomplice, the beloved koala, Katie Dee, traveled an extraordinary 4 952 km before finally reaching our town. Orphaned and vulnerable children from 35 villages in our area eagerly awaited McNamara and Katie Dee’s arrival. The Bike Africa’s bicycle journey raises funds for disadvantaged children through the community-based organization Keep the Dream 196. The organization supports these children through mentoring programs that guide them in developing a brighter future for themselves, as well as their community. Children are taught to be independent, responsible and resilient through the improvement of social integration. Keep the Dream 196 aims to reduce poverty and generate employment. They also help children to overcome challenges they face and enable them to explore life out-

side their villages. The organization currently supports 2 400 children in 85 villages. Stories and images that McNamara has come across on his journey, are shared on a website to reflect Africa’s diversity and strength, as well as issues and challenges. “My hope is that Bike Africa is a story that inspires respect for the people who share our world. “I am privileged to support Keep the Dream 196 who provide care for kids who need a hand. The story of the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children is one we can help them to write with a happier ending”, says McNamara. “It’s the start of an adventure for me, but more than that, a tribute to the courage and hope of the children of Africa”, McNamara added. The duo started their adventure in Kampala (Uganda) in January and will conclude it in Cape Town in November, after they’ve cycled a total of 7 000 km through ten African countries. The cyclist and his koala’s journey can be followed on bikeafrica.net. — Amelia de Ridder amelia@bulletin.us.com

Muyexe’s presidential project is riddled with irregularities The special committee on land and environmental affairs has exposed many irregularities in the presidential pilot project launched by President Jacob Zuma in August 2009 at Muyexe near Giyani. The committee was apparently sent by Zuma to assess progress in the projects arranged by the government in implementing its Comprehensive Rural Development Programme in the village since the launch in 2009, and was led by Ms Peace Bertha Mabe. One of the key issues is the water purification plant plant that was supposed to serve the whole community. However, the plant is not running. Allegedly Eskom switched off the electricity, since there was a huge outstanding amount for electricity usage. According to Limpopo Water Affairs director Alson Matukani the community has to use water containing nitrate acid, found in four of the 22 boreholes in the village. Another major problem is the Mancena agricultural project, where a man known as Dr Maniri, who apparently acted on behalf of rural development, allegedly borrowed R1,3 million from Old Mutual on behalf of the project, and then disappeared. The national director of the department of rural development, Ms Xoliswa Jozana, said there was never an agreement between the department and Maniri. “I cannot deny that the department knew of him coming here, but there was never an agreement with the department to be involved in the project,” she said. The head of the portfolio committee for community services in the Greater Giyani Municipality (GGM), Mr Abraham Manganyi, said the problem was a lack of communication between the national department and the GGM. Meanwhile, Maniri is said to have left the country and the SIU is investigating the case. Another problem is the looting of govern-

ment property, discovered by the commitee. According to Mabe, the committee will compile and recommend further implementation of projects where necessary. They will most likely also recommend punitive steps to whoever to be found guilty of being involved in the wrong doings. Asked about any possible lessons learned from the project, Mabe said: “I think lack of communication and a lack of proper planning and proper management in terms of rolling out government projects, are two of the most important lessons to be learnt from this situation.”

Miss Limpopo, Katryn Barwise from Tzaneen, was the ambasador for the Rhino Festival at Loskop Dam and her initiative to sell T-shirts printed with a Stop Rhino Poaching slogan produced nearly R5 000 that was donated to SanParks Honorary Rangers project to save our rhinos. The winners of the Miss Rhino Festival helped to sell the T-shirts. The shirts were sponsored by Racing 41. A video of the festive activities will soon be shown on KykNET’s Fiesta slot. The acting chairperson of the investigation team, Ms Peace Bertha Mabe, is seen here taking notes during the investigation into irregularities at the Muyexe projects at Giyani.

10 Principles of training by Damian Jansen van Rensburg Principle 6 – Speed Speed is the ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement. Speed training is a very important and subsequently often neglected area of training. It goes hand in hand with power and could improve your results in the gym or outdoors on the bike or running substantially. The speed training exercises and techniques are useful not only to perform faster, but it also helps in increasing the strength and endurance of an individual. It has been found that almost all the individuals who are into some

kind of activi-ty that needs extensive strength all follow a strict speed training schedule. Speed training sessions decrease the reaction time of the nervous system, thus enabling the body to perform quicker. Speed training is considered important to develop the ability of the body to perform at high speeds . SLC and Ben Vorster slog it out Sport office

sport@bulletin.us.com

Stanford Lake College and Ben Vorster High School clashed on the cricket field on Saturday and walked away with one victory each. The first teams battled it out at Ben Vorster and Stanford, who won the toss, batted first. The Vossies’ bowlers kept it tight and didn’t give Stanford much opportunity to score on a pitch that favoured good batting conditions. Tam Johnson scored 70 runs and was well supported by Reinard Schmidt with 30 runs. Unfortunately the damage was done early on and Stanford were all out on 154 runs. The Vossie captain, Girvacques de Jager, caused the most damage, taking five wickets for 35 runs in ten overs. Christo van Zyl took three for forty runs. Ben Vorster came out firing and Stanford was under pressure from the beginning. Jon-

ty Brown bowled well, taking three wickets. Hennie Botes was the Vossies’ top scorer with 69 runs. Ben Vorster won by six wickets. Stanford’s u.15’s turned the tables and recorded a two wicket victory over Ben Vorster. The Vossies batted first and scored 164 runs. Michael J van Rensburg scored 55 runs. Conrad Schmidt was Stanford’s top bowler, taking five wickets for 37 runs in eight overs. Jason Wright took two for seventeen runs.
