Top secret GTM The Greater Tzaneen Municipality this past week refused to make minutes of council meetings and copies of the resolutions by council available to the Bulletin. We asked for the relevant documents pertaining to a council meeting on 2 May, when the contract of the municipal manager, Ms Conny Mametja, was renewed, as well as the minutes of a meeting on 15 May, when the decision was recinded. No reasons have been offered for the refusal. Up until about two years ago when Mametja was appointed, we had an ongoing battle with the GTM’s failure to be transpar-
ent. With Mametja’s appointment a fresh approach of transparency has been introduced, but this has suddenly changed. The Bulletin will not accept this and we served an official letter on the GTM yesterday, giving them seven days to furnish us with the relevant documentation. Should they fail to tender the requested documents, we will lodge an application in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act (Act 2 of 2002). We will also in the coming week formally report the GTM’s resistance to Limpopo’s MEC for local governance.
“The new secretiveness of the GTM makes us wonder what hidden agenda the GTM may have regarding their clumsy effort to renew the municipal manager’s contract. “It is common knowledge that the council stumbled over their own lack of knowledge of the relevant act, and there is no reason to try and hide what happened. “We will not stop in our efforts to obtain the documents, since it is of public interest — and we have an obligation to inform our readers,” said the publisher of Bulletin, Francois Aucamp, yesterday. • We will publish a progress report next week.
