Ethnicity is now being presented as the reason for so-called new research into the desirability of the name Tzaneen. However, yesterday Mr Peter Moruthane, the acting chairperson of Limpopo’s geographic names committee, refuted claims that the
committee wants to change Tzaneen to Tzanana or Tzaneng. This comes after a week of disbelief and speculation that the committee intends proposing a name change for Tzaneen, reports Percy Mthombeni.

“We have no intention whatsoever to change the name Tzaneen. The committee is not in that process yet. “However, I admit that the committee has commissioned a team to conduct the research about the name Tzaneen, after they had received concerns from the Tsonga and North Sesotho groups.” Moruthane says the Tsonga group wants the name Tzaneen to be changed to Tzanana, while the North Sesotho people prefer Tzaneng as the town’s name. He says the committee would wait for the outcome of the research to guide them towards a decision. He added that the community would be informed about the outcome and they should not panic.
Professor Louis Changuion, wellknow historian, ex-professor in history at various SA universities, researcher and author of a number of books on the Tzaneen area and the local population, says to change the name Tzaneen is unnecessary and uncalled for. “It would be totally unnecessary to change the name and it will be a waste of money that can be used to ensure basic service delivery.” He also warns that an attempt to change the name Tzaneen would divide the community. Changuion says the name Tzaneen is indigenous and has no derogatory meaning. He added that the name accommodates all the race groups within the community. Changuion says the people should be consulted before any attempt is made to change Tzaneen’s name. He says the new move to have the name changed seems to be purely politically motivated.
Mr Mabakane Mangane, the provincial spokesperson of the department of arts, sports and culture, declined to comment and referred queries about name changing to the Limpopo geographical names committee. He said the process of name change for Tzaneen has not yet been finalised.
In 2002 the community —existing of different political, religious, gender, race and language groupings — took to the streets of Tzaneen resist an attempt to change Tzaneen to Mark Shoppe (an ANC stalward from the movement’s earlier days).
Bulletin’s Percy Mthombeni investigated the matter and compiled this report
