Bolhuis ondersoek Tzaneen aanranding ■ Joe Dreyer ‘n 19-Jarige meisie is drie weke gelede wreedaardig voor haar groep vriende buite ‘n plaaslike nagklub aangerand. Volgens verskeie ooggetuies is die slagoffer deur twee susters in die parkeerarea van die onderneming getakel. Haar vriendin moes haar na Mediclinic Tzaneen haas na die voorval. Sy was na bewering nog bewusteloos toe hulle by ongevalle aangekom het.

Die slagoffer het aan Bulletin vertel dat sy en ‘n groep van haar vriende op die aand van die 4de Oktober (‘n Vrydagaand) by dié nagklub gaan kuier het. Omstreeks 03:00 die volgende oggend het die groep die klub verlaat nadat daar “laaste rondtes” deur die bestuur afgekondig is.

“Daar is vir ons gesê dat die deure nou gaan sluit en die wat nog verder wil kuier kan binne in die klub agterbly, maar die deure gaan nou sluit. Ons het toe besluit om huiswaarts te keer,” het die meisie vertel. “Ons het almal uitgestap en ons was in ‘n vrolike bui oppad na my vriend se bakkie toe. Daar het ons gesellig bietjie staan en gesels. Skielik het een van die eienaars van die klub se dogters my vriendin gegryp en haar begin rond ruk. Ek het op haar geskree en gevra wat dink sy doen sy? Dit is toe dat sy haar aandag op my vestig en my aan die keel gryp en begin wurg.”

Volgens getuies het die twee meisies grond toe geval en die aanvaller het bo op die meisie gaan sit en haar verder gewurg totdat sy haar bewussyn verloor. Bystanders het haar van die slagoffer afgeruk en na bewering gesê “klim af van haar af, sy’s

uit” waarop die aanvaller na bewering geantwoord het “sy is uit wanneer ek sê sy is uit.”

Verder word daar deur ooggetuies beweer dat op daardie oomblik die aanvaller se suster die slagoffer (wie steeds bewussteloos op die grond gelê het) teen die kop geskop en met haar stewel die meisie se keel toegedruk het. Omstanders kon uiteindelik altwee die aanvallers van die slagoffer af weghou. Daar het ‘n skermutseling in die parkeerarea ontstaan tussen die vriende van die slagoffer en ander omstanders waarin een van die slagoffer se mans-vriende ook erg aangerand is.

“Dit was tydens hierdie chaos wat een van my vriende my in die bakkie gelaai en hospitaal toe gejaag het. My vriendin het glo bestuur en sy vertel my dat ek die heeltyd nog bewusteloos was.”

By die hospitaal het die dokters haar in ongevalle behandel en haar vriendin het dadelik haar ouers gekontak. Haar ma het haar ervaring aan Bulletin beskryf.

“Dit was 03:52 toe ek en my man wakker gebel word.

Die stem aan die anderkant van die gehoorstuk het paniekbevange gegil, “kom hospitaal toe, jou dogter is aangerand en sy word nie wakker nie!”

By ongevalle aangekom het die emosionele wipplank-rit begin. “Die dokter het eers aan ons gesê dat ons nie dadelik ons dogter kon sien nie. Daar sit ons toe en wag vir wat soos ‘n ewigheid gevoel het totdat hy bykans ‘n uur later weer verskyn en met ons meedeel dat ons kind “fine” is en ons sal haar kan huistoe vat. Hy het gesê sy was baie seer en geswel en dat sy ‘n tydjie gaan vat om te herstel, maar ons kon huistoe gaan. Hy het ons ook

aangeraai om ‘n klag van aanranding by die polisiestasie te gaan lê teen die aanvallers.”

Die egpaar is van die hospitaal af na die polisiestasie om die klagtes te lê.

“Ons is deur twee polisiemanne by die aanklagkantoor meegedeel dat ons nie die aanranding klag namens ons dogter en haar vriendin aanhangig kon maak nie, en is aangeraai om ons dogter terug te vat polisiestasie toe sodra sy in staat was om self haar verklaring te gaan aflê. Ons is toe huistoe.”

Sy vertel verder dat sy later daardie middag ‘n dreigende oproep van die verdagtes se pa af ontvang het. Die man het haar glo aangesê om die klagtes te laat vaar aangesien sy volgens hom nie verstaan wat sy doen nie. Sy het egter daarteen besluit en die volgende middag (Sondag) het die twee meisies hul verklarings gaan aflê en ‘n saak is geopen.

Albei slagoffers herstel goed van hul fisiese beserings en sal binnekort met psigoterapie begin.

Die ma van een van die slagoffers het ook besluit om die hulp van die bekende privaatspeurder, Mike Bolhuis in te win. Na die meriete van die saak oorweeg is, het Bolhuis deur sy maatskappy, Specialised Security Services, een van sy agente Tzaneen toe gestuur om ondersoek in te stel.

Teen druktyd kon ons nog nie met Bolhuis se kantoor of die nagklubeienaar in verbinding tree nie. Die ondersoek is tans onderweg en ons sal werk maak daarvan om in ons volgende uitgawe ‘n meer volledige opvolg oor hierdie saak aan ons lesers te bied.

ter, this specific machine is one of the last original survivors of the Vietnam war and saw actual combat during the war in 1966.

After the war it was sold into the civilian market where it was stripped down and type certified before the Israeli military bought and modified it with high performance blades, gear boxes and new “fast fin” technology developed by NASA. It was used by the Israeli’s as a weapons testing platform before Heli Tractor purchased it from Israeli Aerospace technologies. The chopper was shipped in a container and arrived in South Africa in February this year where it was reassembled in Durban and awaited CAA registration as it was the first of its

kind in Africa.

The craft comes fitted with an Australian-designed Cloudburst fire bucket with a capacity of 1 200 litres. The fire bucket can do multiple drops due to the fact that the air allows the valve to open and shut multiple times allowing the pilot to control split drops or single heavy drops. Furthermore, the bucket has an internal foam bladder which allows for the foam to be dispensed directly into the water.

The arrival of the impressive machine was celebrated by a briefing at the LFPA offices at Westfalia accompanied by a demonstration by the experienced pilot and owner of Heli Tractor, Eugene Kalafatis.

In attendance, was the Mopani District Fire Chief, Kobus Visser, who acknowleged that the chopper was an impressive machine and would add a valuable contribution to the region’s fight against runaway field fires.

Wolkberg hiker tells tale of survival

When Sydney Mukhabela (30) looked up at the voice he heard shouting down at him from atop the Ramodike dam, he thought he was looking at a devil. “I looked at this white man screaming for help from on top of that high wall and I thought I was looking at a devil because no man could have come out of that bush alive!” The voice belonged to Nico Pienaar – and he had just made out of the Wolkberg after six days lost in the wilderness.

Nico Pienaar (47) and his brother Devereaux (53) had taken a trip up to the Wolkberg Wilderness on Tuesday, the 15th of October. As a drag line operator on a mine in Witbank, Nico had to be back home before Sunday for the start of his shift as he had taken leave to join brother Devereaux on a road trip. Devereaux is a civil engineer based in Garsfontein, Pretoria. Being avid outdoorsmen, the brothers were looking forward to their two-day hike and started making their way up from the Serala Admin Centre where they entered the reserve, to the first spot they would camp for the night.

Day Two “It was a very relaxing evening and we made the hike in good time.

We set up camp and enjoyed a peaceful evening. The following day we continued to hike the route we had plotted until we reached the Devil’s Knuckles. Because it had taken us longer than expected to reach that point, we took the decision to head back to the offices where we left our vehicle. Our supplies were not going to last and we had already ran out of sufficient water so we opted for a shortcut down the mountain to where we believed we could have an easy walk back on a dirt road.”

Devereaux called his wife, Veronica, and told her of their plans to turn back. He told Veronica to log onto his Garmin account from his personal computer at home so that she could track their journey as he was wearing a Garmin watch.

The brothers reached a second camping spot where their map had indicated would be two large pools of water. There was however no water barring a tiny bit caught in the hollow of one of the big boulders at the site. The water was rotten and so the brothers fashioned a filter system out of some charged wood they found nearby to purify it.

“The water stank and my brother could not hold it down. He threw up after the first sip. I managed to keep a little of the water down and we decided to keep moving,” explained Nico. “We started looking for a route to exit the wilderness as quick as possible as my brother was already fatigued and showed signs of dehydration. We sent up my brother’s drone to scan the area and opted for a route which looked to be the quickest and started walking into that direction.” At nightfall they setup camp.

Day Three The following morning early they set off along their planned route.

Devereaux was showing signs of severe dehydration and fatigue and Nico started carrying both their back packs to lighten his load. “I would carry both our backpacks and walk ahead about 100 metres, put the bags down and then go back to retrieve my brother. Once we reached the bags, I repeated this process until eventually we heard the sound of water rushing in the distance.”

It was a waterfall which meant clean, drinking water. The brothers made their way to the edge of a steep cliff face where they sat to gather their strength for the climb to the bottom. Nico was exhausted from having to carry both the bags and so he sat down on a rock while Nico started the steep descent to the water below. Once he reached the river he shouted up to Nico that it was too steep for him to climb back up and Nico should leave one of the bags at the top, put all the valuables into his backpack and climb down to where he was waiting.

“I made my way down to my brother and we filled our bottles with fresh water. My brother could not stomach this water either and so he poured some onto the tip of his shirt front and sucked the moisture into his mouth. By this time it was nightfall again and so we spent the night on the riverbank.”

Day Four The following morning the brothers knew they were facing very real danger and, not knowing where exactly they were at the time, decided to follow the river downstream. They walked in the river until they encountered another set of problems. Waterfalls.

“The first waterfall was not very high and because there was no way out of the canyon for us as the walls were just too high to scale, we jumped off the waterfall. It was not very deep and we continued walking down the river once we reached the bottom. A while later we hit another waterfall a little higher than the first and we jumped over that one too. The third waterfall was even higher, but we crossed that one and reached a fourth a while later. It was very high and we did not know how deep the pool was below, so we decided not to risk it and sat down on a rock to contemplate a way out.”

Eventually the brothers noticed a large enough log for them to wedge up against the side of the cliff wall and managed to climb

up to a spot where there was a large crack in the boulders. Nico couldn’t go any further as he was too short to reach the top of the boulder through the crack to pull himself up. Devereaux managed to reach and hoisted himself to the top where he sat down and waited for his younger brother.

“Dev was too exhausted to pull me up and so there I sat for roughly 45 minutes to an hour, and tried to find a solution to the problem. It dawned on me that I still had a rope with me. I tied a rock onto the end of it and after a few attempts I managed to throw the rope around a tree on the side of the crack and managed to get myself out of the creek to the top.”

At the top of the creek awaited a hill for the brother to climb in order to reach level ground. In the time it took Nico to scale his way out of the creek, Devereaux had walked up the hill a way ahead in order to find a level spot to rest. By the time Nico had made it to the hill,

Sydney Mukhabela “I shouted at him, Boet! Can you see me because I can’t see you!? He answered and said that he could see me and so I continued on up the hill. Devereaux shouted and asked me whether I had a cell phone with me, but I did not as we lost the bag containing the phones somewhere in the river earlier.

Eventually when I made it to the top of the hill, I called out to him again, but there was no reply. I called a few more times frantically, but there was just silence.”

Exhausted, Nico sat down and soon fell into a slumber.

“There were intermittent intervals where I awoke during the night from the monkeys and other wildlife who were moving through the bushes all around us, and I would call out to my brother, but there was never a reply. I assume that he had also passed out from exhaustion like me. I couldn’t stay awake and fell asleep again.”

Day Five Nico awoke early and started shouting for his brother but there was still no answer. After searching the area he assumed that Devereaux had most likely called out to him during the night while he was sleeping as well and because he heard no response, had decided to try and make it out of the wilderness to call for help.

“I decided that nobody was going to find us here and that our best chance of survival would be for one of us to make it to safety and alert the authorities. Because I had never hiked the area before, and had no navigation instruments with me, I judged from which direction we came and started walking.”

Nico battled through heavy bush and thick shrubbery and eventually found himself back at the Devil’s Knuckles – a nine kilometre circle. In the distance he could see the offices of the Serala Admin Centre where he and his brother had left their vehicle.

“I could see the buildings in the distance but I just could not find a way to get there. I walked all around the Devil’s Knuckles and eventual I was back in the river. I walked out of the river and through bushes again and eventually I found myself on a mountain top. I could see a dam wall (Ramodike) in the distance and on the other side I noticed houses and buildings and knew it was civilization. I started making my way towards that.”

Day Six Nico had spent another night in the wilderness without his brother and had now finally managed to reach the damwall. Here he encoun-

tered another predicament. “The damwall was extremely high and there was no way for me to climb down it, and I could see no visible path around it to reach the bottom. I climbed through a hole in the fence and walked to the edge of the wall. When I looked over, I saw a black man and his girlfriend sitting below and so I shouted down to them to help me as I’ve been in the bush for six days without food.

The man shouted back up at me in disbelief and said I must stay put, he will come up and fetch me.”

That man, was Sydney, a local taxi driver who knew the area very well. He made his way up to Nico via a footpath and when he reached him, took off his own shoes and put them on Nico’s feet – he had lost his shoes somewhere in the river during his struggle to find a way out of the wilderness. Sydney walked Nico down the path to the tar road and from there took him to a local corner café in the village of Thabine. He bought Nico a can of baked beans, a can of pilchards and an energy drink and then used his phone to contact Nico’s family via Facebook.

The authorities were alerted and Nico was taken to The Hangar in Haenertsburg where he received medical treatment from Deon van Tonder. The Hangar served as the base of operations for the search efforts. Nico’s family has since joined him at the lodge.

The Haenertsburg Neighbourhood Watch, Search and Rescue Pretoria, Search and Rescue Polokwane, Search and Rescue Tzaneen, the Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA) and the SAPS were all working around the clock to locate Devereaux. At the time of going to print there had been no new updates and the search continued.

Nico has been combing through the drone footage taken by members of the rescue teams and has managed to identify the exact location where he and his brother last lost contact. Due to heavy mist on Wednesday (yesterday) the search operations were hampered, but are still continuing. According to Nico, his brother’s Garmin watch has run out of battery and was not setup for satellite, only linked to his phone.

“My brother is a tough, resourceful character and I am sure that he will find a way out of that wilderness. I will be going up with the chopper to help search for our bags. The guys told me that they have not found any bags yet and we suspect that my brother may have made his way back up to where we left his bag and he is now trying to find a way out.”

In the meantime, we have learned that Sydney, after escourting Nico to safety, banded together his own search team and went into the wilderness to try and find Devereaux.

Anna and the mango zamas ■

The heart wrenching failure of the once profitable Bali Atchar Farm outside Tzaneen continues. Exactly one year, one month and 18 days ago, the Mopani District Municipality planted a massive signpost at the entrance to the farm along the R71. The sign simply read “Mosupatshela Agri-Hub” and no explanation was given to the community. No press statements, no announcements no public participation – nothing. That sign is now lying on the ground.

It was only after this publication started asking questions that it was revealed to be yet another scheme by the municipality to try and save face. Last year, following eleven years of embarrassing and costly failed attempts at establishing a profitable functioning agricultural enterprise, the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) decided to try again. Sadly, the once flourishing farm which employed hundreds of locals, and boasted 40 000 fruit bearing trees, now stands as no man’s land. Nothing but a signboard came of the promises to start up the Agri-Hub. In 2007 they bought the farm through the Land Bank for R2.9 million. In less than a year the operations on this farm ground to a deafening halt and to this day the farm lies fallow.

There were a lot of shiny plans unveiled by Humphrey Mokgobi, the MDM’s mayor at the time of the takeover. He boldly stated that the municipality planned to grow orchards, produce vegetables and dried fruit, juice and mango atchar on this prime agricultural land. Apparently the farm was bought from the Land Bank in order to drive the empowerment of youth agricultural cooperatives. This never happened.

The 81 families who lived and worked on the farm for the previous owners, Clifford Steyn, before it was handed to the Land Bank after he died, still live there today. The municipality has half-heartedly attempted to remove these people from the property who are deemed to be living there “illegally”, but this has also not happened. And now it seems that they have been given permission to live and harvest on this land. The DA even donated them tents a few years ago, which many of these families still live in today.

Bulletin drove through the farm on Tuesday accompanied by Mopani District Fire Chief, Kobus Visser, to inspect the newly graded fire breaks bordering the property. As we drove we noticed movement in the trees and among the six-foot high grass. Mango pickers were harvesting the fruit and packing them into large bags which will be sold later, to atchar factories in the area.

We spoke to one of the “elders” on the farm, Anna Kgatla (57) who has been living on Bali her entire life. “Me, I was born on this farm and my father worked for baas Clifford his whole life. We had big houses here and everyone had electric and water and a stove and a toilet. Now we have nothing but this mangoes. Everything, it was taken away and the municipality they come here and make us promises and promises but nothing is happening.”

She also said that outsiders are regularly entering the property and harvesting the mangoes, and that the security guards do nothing to prevent it.

According to Anna, she has consent from one of the employees of the MDM to harvest the mangoes each year. She employs some young men to help with the harvesting and the pittance they receive from the fruit is their only income. We asked her for contact details of the person at the MDM who gave her permission. Turns out, it was a man by the name of Goodwill, who, when we called him, arrived at the farm within minutes to meet with us.

We asked him what his designation at the municipality was, but he refused to answers simply saying that “it doesn’t matter” because “I am in charge of the operations on this farm.” He said boldly that he provides the people living on the farm with water in the form of a water tanker and that the municipality has tasked him with managing the farm. He also stated that there was a new security company appointed on the property, but could not provide us with a name and referred us to the MDM media liaison for all our inquiries. When we asked him why the security guards are not controlling access to the property, he said that they are working on it. We asked him for clarity on the progress of the proposed Agri-Hub to which he said nothing worthwhile is done in a hurry and they are still in the planning phase.

trees by outsiders to which he shockingly said “there is nothing wrong, we don’t look to the past as it is in the past we need to look forward.” Yet, he could not tell us what we need to be looking forward to.

During our brief discussion, another man arrived on the scene and introduced himself as Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s councillor Ngobeni of Ward 13. “I am in charge of this property, this is my farm and I look after the people who live here.”

We were rightfully rather shocked at this man’s statement and when we introduced him to the man from the MDM who also claimed to be in charge of the farm, Ngobeni said that he had never met the man before. The two stood over to one side and engaged in conversation. We were referred to the spokespeople of both the GTM and the MDM for further comment.

At the time of going to print we had not received any clarity on who exactly runs the farm, who pays for the security and the water tankers or what the future of the farm holds in store. What we do know is that there are proper fire breaks in place, there are hundreds of people living there without running water or ablutions, the fence has been all but completely stolen off and Anna runs the show under consent of the municipality. Which municipality exactly, we are not sure.

Vorster-Scholtz spogtuin in die kollig ■

Op Sondag die 20ste Oktober het Suid-Afrika se tuinbouklubs die Nasionale Tuinboudag gevier. Die Letaba Tuinbouklub se lede het egter besluit om hierdie geleentheid eerder Vrydag die 25ste Oktober te vier.

Die pragtig-versorgde tuin van Susan Vorster-Scholtz, ‘n lid van die klub sedert 1966, is die byeenkomsplek vir Vrydag se geleentheid en sal om 14:00 begin. Vorster-Scholtz wie haar tuin beskikbaar gestel het vir die viering van Nasionale Tuinboudag, het egter genoem dat met hierdie verseggende hitte en die droogte wat tans in hierdie gebied heers, dit behoorlik ‘n opdraande stryd verg om die tuin te versorg.

Volgens haar vergader die Letaba Tuinbouklub se lede een keer per maand en Vrydag se geleentheid waar sowat 56 lede verwag word en reeds volbespreek is, gaan met ‘n lewendige optrede gepaard gaan.

“Dis baie droog, my tuin is nie naastenby wat dit moet wees nie, maar ek is nietemin baie opgewonde om hierdie geleentheid hier te kan aanbied”, het Vorster-Scholtz aan Bulletin gesê.

Vanweë haar groot liefde vir orgideë, is sy ‘n kenner op die gebied. In haar tuin en selfs in haar woning groei die orgideë plante in al hul glorie.

“Orgideë is vir my besonderse mooi plante.

My passie vir tuinbou het ook op my seun Francois afgevryf en hy plant en groei self deesdae.” ‘n Ander plant in haar tuin waarvoor sy ‘n passie ontwikkel het, is vir die Australiëse inheemse grasboom. Sy vertel sy het ‘n paar jaar gelede ‘n Australiër ontmoet wie baie belanggestel het om broodbome te bekom.

“Hy het plegtig belowe om vir my van hierdie

Australiese grasbome te stuur. Ek het hom nie regtig kop toe geneem nie en bloot gedink dis wéér van daardie leë beloftes. Groot was my verrassing toe hy weliswaar sy woord gehou het deur vir my ‘n aantal grasboomplantjies te stuur.”

Volgens Vorster-Scholtz wie intussen ‘n aantal van haar eie Australiese grasbome gekweek het, kan hierdie bome tot 600 jaar oud word.

Sy sê afgesien dat sy met hulle kweek, verkoop sy hulle ook.

Verder vertel sy hoe sy tydens ‘n besoek in Ierland eenkeer ‘n besonderse brug-ontwerp gesien het. Die brug het haar so bëindruk dat sy summier besluit het om so ‘n brug in haar tuin te laat oprig.

“Die Ierse-ontwerpte brug is toe staan gemaak in my tuin waaroor ek besonder trots is.

Later het ek ‘n waterstroompie bygevoeg wat deur ‘n dammetjie gevolg was.”

Vorster-Scholtz sê as sy moet terugdink waar haar passie se oorsprong vir tuinbou vandaan kom, het sy haar moeder, Lena, te danke daarvoor. Sy sê haar ma was selfs baie lief daarvoor om in die tuin te werk en dis heelwaarskynlik waar haar passie begin het.

Haar raad aan die jonger generasie wie graag ‘n passie vir tuinbou wil aankweek, sê sy ‘n mens moet nooit ophou om om jou te kyk nie.

“As ‘n iemand byvoorbeeld ‘n waterstroom in ‘n tuin wil skep, gaan kyk eers hoe dit in die natuur gedoen word, en doen dit dan soos wat dit in die natuur is.”

Groep 91 Uitvoer, ‘n produsent en uitvoerder van die beste gehalte suurlemoene, druiwe, Valencia lemoene en macadamia neute, was die afgelope paar jaar betrokke by ‘n mentorskap program wat veral fokus op die ondersteuning van skoolhoofde in die plaaslike gemeenskap, waaruit meeste van die maatskappy se werknemers afkomstig van is.

“Vanweë ons betrokkenheid by hierdie plaaslike skole, is die Mahwahwa High School op Nkambako een van die min landelike skole wat nou landbou as ‘n vak aanbied. Die realiteit is dat dié kinders hulle praktiese gedeelte van die modules moet voltooi”, het Henk van Rooyen, Groep 91 Uitvoer se direkteur van produksie, gesê.

Groep 91 Uitvoer help om hierdie leerlinge te fasiliteer en so ook plaasbesoeke vir hulle te reël. Groep 91 Uitvoer het vroeër vanjaar reeds

by Beerseun Boerdery besoek afgelê waar daar hoofsaaklik op kontant gewasse gefokus was.

Vir die tweede praktiese gedeelte van leerlinge onderrig het Groep 91 Uitvoer hulle op Dinsdag 15 Oktober na R10 Brahmans van Llewellyn en Corrie Labuschagne geneem.

Groep 91 Uitvoer bied hierdie program aan gesamentlik en te ondersteuning met Partners for Possibility en die Kaross Foundation.

Partners for Possibility is ‘n kreatiewe oplossing tot Suid-Afrika se onderrig krises. Die Partners for Possibilty is ‘n gesamentlike aksie en vennootskap tussen skoolhoofde en besigheidsleiers om sosiale samehang deur middel van vennootskappe skoolhoofde te bemagtig om leiers vir verandering in hul skole en gemeenskappe te word.

Die Partners for Possibility program fasiliteer kruis sektorale wedersydse vennootskappe tussen ondernemings, regering en die sosiale sektor.

Om die lang termyn doelwit van beide Groep 91 Uitvoer en Kaross te vervul, is die Kaross Foundation gestig. Die hoofdoelwit van hierdie stigting is om projekte te identifiseer, te befonds en toe te pas wat sal lei tot ‘n volhoubare verbetering in lewenskwaliteit vir beide Kaross en Groep 91 Uitvoer se werknemers asook hul gemeenskappe.

Urgent execution of electricity sector reforms needed

■ Agri SA Agri South Africa announced on Friday the 18th of October its concerns of the negative impact load shedding have on the primary agricultural sector, the food value chain and the economy of this country.

“Eskom has implemented Stage Two load shedding from Wednesday, catching the South African economy off guard,” Nicol Jansen, Agri SA Chairman of Economics and Trade Centre of Excellence said.

“More advanced warning could have made a big difference for farmers and businesses to adjust their planning accordingly.”

Load shedding according to Agri SA has an impact on irrigation-reliant and energy-intensive industries like the horticulture, dairy, poultry, grains and agro-processing industry.

Irrigation and the scheduling thereof, the application of fertilizer, processing and shipment are all negatively affected by the unplanned load shedding disruptions. Over 25 percent of the country’s food is produced by irrigation-reliant and energy-intensive industries.

“The burden of load shedding is unacceptable. We need our economy to grow and uplift all South Africans. The unreliability of electricity supply is a major constraint on our economy and the outlook for economic growth. In addition to rising electricity tariffs, the occurrence of load shedding disrupts business activity and is accompanied by direct and indirect costs”, said Jansen.

Whilst the cabinet’s recent approval of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2019 is a step in the right direction, more urgent government actions are needed to mitigate the electricity sector crisis according to Agri SA. These include (but not limited to): • The appointment of an Eskom CEO with proven leadership capability • Restructuring of Eskom, considering a holistic review of the energy sector and the electricity supply industry • Manage future electricity tariffs in a transparent and predictable manner • Take decisive action on debt relief and the refinancing mechanism • Encourage broader private sector participation, for example small-scale embedded generators (SSEGs) in agriculture and eliminating administrative constraints.

In the short-run, Eskom will have to give more consideration to its customers, giving advanced warning of load shedding disruptions according to Agri SA.

Kriek het ook gesê georganiseerde landbou ondersteun die minister van finansies, Tito Mboweni in sy doelwit. Kriek het ook gesê swart boere moet ondersteun word deur kommersiele boere. Alle betrokkenes moet saamwerk met een doelwit voor oë om ekonomiese groei in die landboubedryf te vestig.

Hy het eerstens beleidsonsekerheid genoem as een van die grootste bekommernisse onder boere in Suid-Afrika. Schoonbee Landgoed claims Game of Stars Cup ■

In 2018 the Mark Fish Foundation (MFF) and Agri Limpopo embarked on an initiative, called the Game of Stars, to establish a sporting culture on farms and in doing so build relationships, uplift skill sets and provide players with a platform to showcase their talent.

This year MFF have hosted five district tournaments where the participating teams played 47 matches and saw a whopping 117 goals to determine the top 10 teams that will battle it out at the finals.

The finals took place on Saturday the 19th October at The Ranch Resort about 36 kilometres from Polokwane.

The district teams which made it through to final rounds were: Capricorn Midway Fruits Mockford Farms Mopani West Miami Canners (Miami Tigers FC) Mahela Group (Shaka Bundu FC) Vhembe Maroi Boerdery Noordgrens Landgoed Mopani East Bavaria Fruit Estate KomatiFruit Richmond Kopano Sekhukhune Schoonbee Landgoed Rooiblom Landgoed.

In the final match the side of Schoonbee Landgoed team claimed a 2-1 victory against the side of Richmond Kopano to be crowned the Game of Stars 2019 Provincial Champions.

A group of players from the various teams in this tournament were selected by Mark Fish, Eddie Motale and Chris Manoka as part of the AgriUnited team. The AgriUnited team which consist out of 22 players from the 10 farm teams will be playing two matches against Super Sport United on the 15th November at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.

The above players will travel to Pretoria on 10 November.

They will be coached at the Tuks High Performance Centre from 11-14 November and on 15 November will play two friendly matches against SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. They will return to their farms on 16 November.

This is what the former Bafana Bafana player Mark Fish had to say about the day and the AgriUnited team: “There is a definite improvement in the quality of play since the initiative started in 2018. The football played on Saturday was entertaining, fast paced and exciting. Well done to all the teams that made it to the finals and thank you for the quality of football that was played, it was truly a pleasure to

have watched it all. Well done to the winners of the 2019 Game of Stars - Schoonbee Landgoed from Groblersdal and last year’s winners, Richmond Kopano, who ended in second place. Also great to see a new team, Miami Canners from Letsitele, ending in third place”, said Fish.

“The Ranch Resort’s pitches are very well kept and the players, who are used to sand and veld pitches enjoyed playing on it. Thank you to Nico Myburg from The Ranch Resort who organised the sponsorship for the fields. It was also great to see the number of farmers that came out to support their teams, travelling all the way from Musina, Tzaneen and HoThe Schoonbee Landgoed team (in red and white) competes in the final match. edspruit.”

Fish also thanked the sponsors that came through to make this tournament possible, namely Letsepe Foods, Agri Limpopo, Saai, Farmboek, King Price, Bosveld Landini, Uconomy and Dapper.

“Our focus now lies on getting the AgriUnited team’s camp and friendly matches organised. The quality of players Eddie Motale (Magents), Chris Manoka and I selected are good and I cannot wait to showcase rural talent. And also afford the 22 players with an experience that will stay with them for a lifetime”, said Fish.

Fish said the AgriUnited camp will focus on developing the player’s as individuals (both physically and mentally), teach them what teamwork on and off the field should be, create a spirit of sportsmanship and expose them to what it feels like to be part of a professional team.

Gordon conquers Crocodile Race Down Under ■ Roelof de Jonge Alan Gordon and Carel van Wyk, also known as CP, from the Insect Science Mountain Bike (MTB) team, were the only South Africans to enter for Australia’s 25th edition of the Crocodile Trophy consisting of eight stages over eight days.

Even greater was the finish for the South Africans when Gordon, competing in the Elite Men division, claimed the outright victory amongst a host of Australian and other international MTB riders.

Gordon finished the race with a time of 29:15:11,1.

Insect Science team mate, Van Wyk, who also competed in the Elite Men category, also had an impressive run and finished a credible ninth place.

Van Wyk finished with a time 33:13:55,8.

Bulletin spoke to Gordon after his amazing feat Down Under.

“At the end of the third day I knew the next day

was a big one with lots of climbs that suits me, so I knew it’s my chance to make time on my lead after the fourth stage. I knew then that I could win the race”, said Gordon.

“It was my first time competin in the Crocodile Trophy. The heat in the Outback was the most difficult part of the race and there is no shade to protect you from the sun.

Also, there where some very steep climbs where everyone had to get off their bikes. It’s probably one of the tougher races I encountered”, he said.

“I will see if I’ll go back next year, maybe I’ll go and do something else. The racing season is almost over for me. I have two one-day races left which is the Insect Science Classic and the 94.7 Road Race. I just like to ride and push myself. A race I would still like to do is the Breck Epic MTB Race in Colorado in the USA”, Gordon said.

“From hoping to get close to a podium finish to actually winning the race overall, I am very happy, this is my biggest win ever.

Thanks to all who supported me, it meant and helped a lot. Now for some recovery and exploring Australia”, Gordon said on Facebook shortly after winning this epic race.
