Missing millions Report kept secret

A forensic report with information about the alleged disappearance of assets worth R121 million from farms returned to the Makgoba clan in Magoebaskloof, is being kept secret by Limpopo’s department of agriculture. The former deputy minister of rural development and land reform, Mr Thulas Nxesi, commissioned the investigation in reaction to allegations of mismanagement of assets and financial misconduct against the Mamphoku-Makgoba Community Trust. According to Mr Mmamaponya Makgoba, the secretary of the Makgoba royal council, the report hasn’t been made available to the community because the department said “it could stir up emotions if it was made public”. Limpopo’s land claims commissioner, Mr Tele Maphoto, said the report is only for internal use. In the mean time the bitter infighting between the Makgoba clan over the control of the 35 farms — spread over 5 000 ha — returned to them after a successful restitution claims continues. The purchase of the farms cost the government more than R100 million in 2009 and the community caretakership of the land and the settlement was to benefit over six hundred families. But since the farms, including Sapekoe, were handed over they have deteriorated. In 2011 the Limpopo agriculture department took over the tea estate. Mr Joe Makgoba of the community trust has since denied reports of conflict between the trust and the royal council. He said they are in fact working together. He said that both the trust and the council agreed to hand over the caretakership of the tea estate to the department. According to a report in a daliy newspaper the royal council confirmed there was conflict as they do not recognise the trust as the legal entity representing the community and the chief.

Lindie Myburgh: Ons paaie is baie gevaarlik!

Vlieg voort 2012 Hiegaatons… alweer!

In gelukkiger dae....

Bel gerus 083 548 6911 of 072 989 8911 of 082 650 8832 of 079 306 0666 as u ‘n ambulans benodig.

Dié foto is verlede week geneem, toe ‘n babatjie in

‘n broeikas hierheen gebring is.

Ds Barry vd Merwe NG Kerk Letsitele Vrydag 13 Januarie 2012

Mooi naweek!

Blykbaar was Jan Cornelius ‘n gesondheidsinspekteur in Tzaneen. As iemand meer inligting aan my kan verskaf sal ek dit baie waardeer.

Skoonste dorp?

Inwoners is ontevrede,

reg gedoen is nie. Die munispale bestuurder, mnr I.P.

These twins are not so typical You may not exactly be seeing double when you look at them... because twin sisters Tsakane (better known as TK) and Ntsako Shikwambana are not your typical sixteen year old twins. The two girls each have their own bold and unique personalities and after a struggle to get people to recognise them as individuals, they finally decided to attend different high schools. This was as a result of consultation with their parents who supported and made it possible for the twins to attend separate schools. TK, who is in Gr 10 at Ben Vorster is a self proclaimed dancer and entertainer. She loves poetry, painting and drawing and her ultimate goal is to attend the Conde Nast International School of Fashion in London. She described herself as happy, fun, multilingual and creative. Ntsako, on the other hand, is in Gr 10 at Merensky. She loves spending time with her friends but also enjoys her private time. Ntsako aims to pursue a career in engineering and has aspirations of becoming an author as well. She describes herself as kind, patient, honest and chilled. The twins have been waitressing at the market café of Food Lovers Market in Tzaneen’s new Lifestyle Centre. They were working during the school holidays and will continue working over weekends during their free time. The pair along with their Gr 11 school friend, Khutso Matlou, as well as all their colleagues speak fluent Afrikaans. This makes the restaurant a unique experience for Afrikaans speaking people as they can be served in their native language by the entire staff. The twins said they enjoyed working even though it was hard work. — Beaunice Mnisi

Suppliers in Lim will suffer most The DA in Limpopo expressed grave concern about the delay in signing the Memorandum of Understanding regarding the five provincial departments that have been placed under administration. Effectively this places the provincial government administration and the contracts it has with many service providers under severe strain. The DA leader in Limpopo, Ms Desireé van der Walt, has written to finance minister Pravin Gordhan to establish whether there is any plan put in place to ensure that these five departments fulfil their currently existing contractual obligations with various service providers.

First Southern Cross Gr 12’s excel; 100% pass rate

The 2011 national results, as we have come to expect, are very concerning with a large number of pupils countrywide still only managing low level pass marks or not passing at all, despite the improved pass rates. This unfortunate trend in our national Gr 12 results is not, however, being followed by Southern Cross Schools (SCS) in Hoedspruit. SCS had its very first Gr 12 class in 2011 and this placed the spotlight very squarely on the school. Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of the Independent Institute of Education, says that even with the significant increase in the numbers of post-school opportunities made available by the public sector, many students will not gain access to their institution of first choice, as demand far outstrips supply. Man drives taxi into shop

It was drama filled with tears and laughter when a man took a taxi at a Giyani taxi rank and tried it for a joy-ride with passengers on board, before he drove it into a shop. It started while the taxi was waiting for passengers to Xikukwani village. The driver had left the keys in the ignition when the man, who cannot be named because he is said to be mentally unfit, started the taxi and drove it straight into the shop. People ran for cover as the taxi went knocking three other taxis, before it crashed through the glass sliding door at Skipper Bar clothing shop about hundred metres away and continued into Edgars. Insp Thomas Makhubele of the Giyani SAPS said the man is a patient of Vuxekeni Mental Health Care Hospital. Makhubele said the man would be examined there to see if he was fit to take responsibility for the damage he caused. The damaged is estimated at R75 000.

This week’s fitness tip Ettienne van Wyngaardt (Fitness specialist)

Bulletin I hope that your goal for 2012 is to start living a healthy lifestyle. If you are not going to start now, you will never start. What are you waiting for, or must something first happen to you before you are going to start? Then I am afraid it’s almost too late. Start by cutting out all the food that is not healthy and replace it with healthy food. If you don’t know what is healthy food, just come to our gym and we’ll tell you what to do. Join the gym and let us work out a program according to your needs. It doesn’t help if you start with an advanced programme when you have never exercised in your life before. And most importantly is to make time. Don’t use the excuse that you’ve got children. Most gyms have child care facilities, so you can go to gym. And don’t think that a gym is just for people with perfect bodies. The gym is actually there for everyone that doesn’t have a perfect body.

Dribblers aim for Guinness Book Hockey players from Waterkloof High School in Pretoria hope to set up a Guinness World Record by dribbling hockey balls for 500 km from Musina to Pretoria. The team departed from Musina on Monday at 06:30. They will dribble the balls for 50 km per day for ten days until they arrive in Pretoria. They plan to arrive in Pretoria on Wednesday. They hope to raise R6 million for the construction of a state of the art hockey field at their school. One of the organisers of the event, Ms Emelia Janse van Rensburg, says the group consists of 40 players, who are eager to be part of history in the making. “We are fully prepared for this event and we are definitely going to set up a Guinness World Record. “Our escort team, which includes traffic officers and a medical team, is also ready for the challenge. The idea is to get companies to sponsor us per kilometre.” Janse van Rensburg says people can also support the initiative financially by sending an sms with the word HOCKEY to 48822. “The sms costs R10 and our initiative gets R9 from each message. We therefore request people to sms in large numbers,” she added. Janse van Rensburg says they are also working with Kits4Kids, an organisation which collects old sporting equipment for underprivileged children and she requests people to donate their sporting equipment that is not being used.

On behalf of the Musina Municipality, Cllr James Kaunda wished the players a safe journey. “As the starting point of the historic marathon, Musina Municipality is proud to be part of this occasion. We have no doubt that the players will arrive safely in Pretoria and set up a world record that will also put Musina on the map. “We also hope that they will also raise enough funds for their intended project.” The players dribbled into Louis Trichardt on Tuesday morning, an hour before schedule. Janse van Rensburg said the children’s

enthusiasm is the reason why they were making such good time. “The mountain was nothing for them. By the time they reached the summit, the children looked even fresher than before they started,” Janse van Rensburg said. “The heat, however, took some time getting used to.” The team was pushing to reach Polokwane by Wednesday and Mokopane by today. They aim to reach Mookgophong tomorrow and pass through Bela-Bela on Monday. People interested in getting to know more about the record attempt or that would like

to sponsor the group, can phone Janse van Rensburg on 082 850 2271. — LiN News/Zoutpansberger

Orlando Chauke Mininginisi Brave Ladies did not just win the cup when they beat Real Mighty Girls 1-0 at Giyani Stadium over the weekend, but defended their two year reign as the Mayoral Tournament title holders. Mininginisi, in third position in the Sasol league, started the match as the favourites against their archrival, Real Mighty Girls. The Mighty Girls put up an impressive game that wowed the spectators on the grandstand throughout the first half. Their striker, Pelma Chabalala, gave Mininginisi defenders a hard time as she constantly breached their defence and shot to the net. However, the goalkeeper was not kind to her attempts. A late goal from Sharon Shibambu, who came on as substitute in the second half, helped Mininginisi secure a win against the Mighty Girls despite their poor performance. After the goal, the Mighty Girls were even more determined to equalise, they came back with a vengeance, gunning for the net, but it was too late as time was up. According to Austin Makamu, chairperson of sport in Giyani, both teams first played at ward-level to qualify for the final. “We were concentrating on the u.19’s to promote and develope soccer amongst the youth that still has the potential to take sport to a higher level,” he said. “Most of the players here are playing in the Absa or Sasol league and this is the place to see them grow in their soccer careers, and perhaps make something of

themselves,” he said. Several sporting codes were part of the mayoral tournament at the stadium. However, the spectators just could not get enough of the ladies. The winning team later walked away with R4000, the trophy and gold medals, while the runners-up received R2000 and silver medals.
