Breakthrough for Tzn

• From January pre-paid electricity meters will be installed in Tzaneen for the first time ever

First in South Africa to use new technology

Francois Aucamp

Pre-paid electricity meters boasting the very latest technology will become available in Tzaneen in January — the first town in South Africa to obtain the very latest state-of-theart technology. The Greater Tzaneen Municipality will make the meters available for a pilot project in Flora Park first. The GTM’s director of electro-technical ser-

vices, Mr Pierre van den Heever, confirmed the new development on Wednesday. He also confirmed that the new technology makes the meters tamper resistant and that the meters will be monitored from the GTM’s offices — where an alarm will go off the moment somebody tries to tamper with a meter! Pre-paid meters will in the long run cause a dramatic improve-

Van den Heever

ment in the GTM’s cash flow, since electricity will not be paid for two months after consumption, Van den Heever said. Pre-paid meters will be ideal in specific circumstances, for example in granny flats. Van den Heever warned that people shouldn’t think the unit cost of electricity is cheaper for pe-paid meters. “Consumers will be able to monitor their usage better and

easier, but the unit cost will be exactly the same as for consumers not using pre-paid meters,” he said. Van den Heever added that Tzaneen has waited for a long time to introduce pre-paid meters, due to the fact that the GTM was not prepared to give the green light for technology that allowed for tampering with meters — inevitably resulting in losses in revenue. • Eskom’s alleged 20% loss is said to be largely as a result of pre-paid meters that are not tamperfree and being side-passed.

Vlieg bestuur nou seker so omtrent 25 jaar.

Sien, Vlieg wil homself bevuil as daar nóg ‘n kollektelysie by die huis aankom.

Richard En Julene: Wonder wie se idee was dit in die eerste plek?

New Lifestyle Centre in Tzn gets thumbs up On Wednesday the first visitors to Tzaneen’s new Lifestyle Centre openly showed their approval of the new stores. Our journalists were there and spoke to a few shoppers. Mr Pierre and Ms Brenda Fourie (below left) said: “It’s nice. Checkers looks like a store in Pretoria. Mmapowana Masete said: “It’s amazing, exciting, different, eish… I can’t wait to see the other shops when they open. When Ocean Basket comes I’ll be delighted. And this is job creation.” Rixongile Mtebule: “New beginnings, that’s what I think. I am so excited to see all the other shops that will be opening soon. This is the beginning of a great new place.” Sekitla Letsoalo: “I think the new mall is fine and things look cheap, the shoes look glamorous; they should add more shops and a cinema.” Mss Rina and Shelly Jansen: “We think the new Checkers is neat, with nice food and good variety.”

Web site is an instant success

Independent statistics — managed by Google — show that our new interactive and user friendly web site has become an overnight popular cyber space address. The statistics show that so far the most hits (visits) have been made from Polokwane, with Tzaneen in the second place and Mbombela third, followed by Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town. There must be a number of people from our area living in Baltimore in the USA, since the most hits from outside our country come from Baltimore, with Maputo not far behind and London just behind Maputo. A number of unique features of our site also seem to be enjoyed by people. The fact that visitors can instantly link up with any of the other nine newspapers in the LiN Media group of independent newspapers in Limpopo with a click of the mouse, is an obvious hit. This enable visitors to have a quick glance of what is happening in Limpopo, since the LiN Media newspapers’ footprint cover the province. Our “breaking news” feature is also very popular and last week’s running commentary about the horror road accident out-

side Tzaneen — killing four people and injuring two minors — has attracted a record number of visits. Exciting news is that we have obtained the rights to a renowned international weather forecast institution. We should by next week be able to offer on our web site visitors a weather report that is continuously updated. One can in fact sit and watch how the weather changes...! Look out for this special feature. You will never again need to wait for a weather forecast on radio or TV. Yet another brand new feature will be introduced soon, offering the latest about events in our area and the rest of Limpopo. The beauty of this feature is that people would be able to enter certain data pertaining to their dates and events without even having to talk to us! Our archives, offering the opportunity to page through back copies of Bulletin, are being updated and soon it will be possible to go back quite far. All this is by far not the end of the story... more surprises are to be introduced at www.bulletin.us.com. Don’t wait, go and discover a fresh new approach to local news.

Restourasie vorder nou fluks

The ward committee members of Ward 14 in Tzaneen visited the new Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre to have a look at the development, since it is within the boundaries of the ward. Ms Anza van Vuuren, the Councillor, for Ward 14, lead the delegation. She also used the opportunity to dress in black, to show solidarity with journalists, after the government’s decision to push ahead with the Protection of Information Bill. Ms Hanlie Aucamp, Centre Manager, arranged a tour of the Centre. In this photo are Mr Dave Protter and Ms Aucamp at the back, and in front are Mss Mantwa Mukhawane, Van Vuuren and Mr Dirk Stoltz.

Many of the pupils of Tzaneen Primary School know him as Mr Ted. Mr Ted Shu teaches the junior classes music once a week and helps them learn how to read

music notation. But Mr Ted is not just another teacher, he is part of the US Peace Corps (PC) and came all the way from San Diego, California, to teach here. The PC is an American volunteers program that sends volunteers for two years to other countries to work with, amongst others, schools and non-profit organisations.

They have 178 volunteers in SA that are involved in various Aids outreach and schools and community resources projects. Volunteers undergo two months of training when they arrive in a country, to help them to better understand the culture and language of the communities where they will live and work. Shu received training in Siswati, but he was placed in the Tzaneen area where the dominant language is Afrikaans. So he decided to start learning the language. He used teaching material for Gr 1’s and started listening when people spoke, occasionally asking them to translate a word for him. After a year he is surprisingly fluent in Afrikaans and about half of our interview was conducted in Afrikaans. At the moment he teaches at Rooikoppies in Magoebaskloof and Tzaneen Primary. He also does some

work for the ProGroup Foundation (working with victims of abuse). Shu has been in SA since January 2010 and in the Tzaneen area since June last year. He will be going back in March. He was a music major at California Polytechnic State University and has been playing musical instruments since he was ten years old. His main instrument is the clarinet, but he also plays the piano and French horn. He joined the PC because he wanted to do volunteer work and travel, experience other cultures and continue doing what he enjoyed. His favourite SA food is skaapskenkel-potjie. Experience has taught him that even though to work is important, family and friends and one’s culture is what sustains you. When he gets back home he’d like to continue his studies.

Ds Barry vd Merwe NG Kerk Letsitele

Vrydag 25 November 2011

Die volgende vier Sondae is in baie kerke bekend as Adventsondae. Baie gemeentes hou Kerssangdienste in hierdie tyd. Sy rympie oor Kersfees lees so:

Dinsdag was inderdaad ‘n kwade dag, ‘n boosaardigheid in ons jong demokrasie.

Sny man, sny...

Volgens `n brief in Bulletin is daar tans 570 blou-ape in aanhouding.

She spoke as part of Correctional Week celebrations. One of the inmates, Amos Mashudu, said prison has exposed them to skills that they would be able to use to make an honest living once outside. “We’ve changed and we’re well equipped and ready to face challenges outside,” he said. Traditional healing and the best chicken ever, waiting in Nkowa² If you are looking for an interesting, enriching, fun activity to do with friends or family, now is the time to think out of the box and go for a village tour in Nkowankowa on the outskirts of Tzaneen. Sure, you might be wondering what on earth I’m going on about. Truth be told, I’ve had the opportunity to go on township tours to Soweto many times, but always declined — because it’s just too dangerous. Right? Not so, I recently found out. Well, I can’t realy speak for Soweto, but a tour to Nkowankowa is definitely worth your while when you are looking for a stimulating and safe new experience. You might think that there is nothing worthwhile seeing or visiting in a village or that perhaps you already know everything important there is to know about life in the rural parts of our country. But: have you ever been to a san-

goma? Have you ever had pap and chicken at a street café in a village? Have you ever dressed as a traditional Shangaan? Too scared to try? James Ndhlovu, an experienced tour guide from Woodsmoke Heritage Tours will gladly introduce you to the wonders and simple pleasures of village life in the rural parts of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality. We were recently treated to a tour to the Nkowankowa kraal of the famous sangoma, Never Die. Although he passed away a few years ago, his legacy lives on through his five wives who continue his work. James introduced us to the fascinating way in which this traditional healing practice is organised and operated. He showed us the bones the sangoma throws to determine the customer’s ailment, whilst giving us a basic explanation of what the different components mean to the interpreter. After learning about the ‘African stethoscope’, as James calls it, we were dressed in traditional Shangaan clothing in the ‘ndumba’ hut. We stood frozen as the women bustled around us, softly talking in Shangaan, seemingly deciding on what beads would go best with which ‘lap’ and skirt — whilst arranging beaded bands on our heads. What a sight for sore eyes, we made! Brightly dressed we felt

like real Shangaans for just a moment and really got into the spirit of the day; each one clutching a drum under one arm. These new experiences and the walk to and from Never Die’s kraal left us ready for a hearty meal. Where to go? As a fussy eater I can say with conviction that Miami Chickens in Nkowankowa serves the best and freshest braaied chicken I’ve ever had — even topping my Oom Coenie’s special chicken braai… Served directly off the coals you will be hard done to find a fresher option than this, where only a few hours ago lunch was still clucking away in the back yard. For a real cultural experience, make a note to visit the wealth of interesting stop-overs in the rural areas of the Greater Tzaneen. — LiN News/Kruger2Canyon

Small can also work in farming The National Development Plan (of Minister Trevor Manuel) paints the big picture. But small can also work. Here in Limpopo, with our largely rural community, benign climate and fertile soils, we could well lead the way for the future development of traditional agriculture as a means to enhance food security and create employment. We need the resources from national or provincial government to develop traditional agriculture, and the benefits would far outweigh the costs. If small-scale farming were to be given the status it deserves, these would be the priorities: Land tenure systems should be improved. A way of life would be established and communities would develop a sense of responsibility as custodians of the environment. Starting at school level, young people who choose agriculture as a career should be able to learn the necessary skills. They should be able to further their studies at State-subsidised agricultural colleges or at universities with agricultural faculties. There should also be opportunities for on-the-job training by extension officers from local and provincial government. Rural agricultural centres should be provided with proper

infrastructure in the form of roads, dams, irrigation canals and electricity. Farmers should receive access to machinery such as tractors, ploughs, planters and spray machines from a central workshop. Such equipment could be hired at subsidised rates. Farmers should also receive guidance and advice on improvement of crops and livestock. The state should provide seasonal credit for fertilizers and spray material, and support in research and extension. Co-operative markets could be established in the larger centres where produce could be sold to residents. The direct benefits of traditional agriculture to the economy are easily identified: Successful small-scale farmers would produce crops and vegetables in excess of their families’ requirements and these could be sold cheaply to the local community. Farmers who grew products that could be processed would provide raw materials to factories, thus stimulating industrial development. For example, timber for furniture making, or green mangoes for atchar. Farmers, apart from providing a livelihood to their own families, would very likely require seasonal labour to harvest their crops and this would mean further employment opportunities in the community. Finally, these farmers would contribute towards food security by earning of foreign exchange through exports and the saving of foreign exchange by limiting food imports.

Fast Facts McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren F1 Following the 1988 Italian Grand Prix, the McLaren executive team found themselves discussing the company’s future, while waiting for their flight at Milan airport. The conversation turned to building the ultimate sport car. At the time, the supercar market was dominated by exciting, but sometimes temperamental, Italian cars. It was a challenge that proved too tempting to resist. McLaren Automotive Chairman Ron Dennis explains: “The more we discussed it, the more it appealed to me. It would not be easy – which made it interest me even more – and one thing that can be certain: if McLaren was going to build a sports car, it would have to be not only the finest sports car the world had ever seen, but also the finest sports car the world was ever going to see.”

The vision for the MP4-12C was to make a sports car that was lightweight ‘and’ strong. Fast ‘and’ efficient. Comfortable ‘and’ exhilarating. With intelligent design, conventional compromises could be avoided. Because the design started from scratch with no carry-over parts from previous cars to cloud the McLaren vision, they had freedom to design without compromise. While ultimately more challenging, it allowed them to put convention to one side and innovate, from the ground up. Every switch, dial and component is bespoke to their own specification, meeting obsessively high standards. The MP4-12C is the result of 45 years of learning, from their first 1964 racing car, to the carbon fibre breakthroughs of their sports cars, the F1 and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. The 12C is the first car in its class to offer carbon fibre framework at its core. At less than 80kg, the Carbon MonoCell is 25% lighter than conventional all-aluminium frames, and significantly stiffer. This carbon fibre structure contributes significantly to the 12C’s overall low weight.

Developing a car that would outperform its rivals in every significant way would require a totally new approach to both design and construction. When the first plans were submitted to the board, one phrase was highlighted: no compromise. For a decade, the F1 was the finest supercar ever built, one that only McLaren could have made. It’s still the benchmark by which all other supercars are judged; the ultimate example of no compromise engineering. It takes 10 hours to build the average family car. Each McLaren F1 took three and a half months. That’s because we insisted on levels of hand built, bespoke contraction that was unheard of, even for high-performance vehicles. To be light enough to meet our targets, we made the

The 12C is powered by a McLaren twin-turbocharged, 3.8 litre V8 engine – the M838T. McLaren feels that his smaller capacity, smaller weight, higher efficiency and more economical power unit marks the start of a new era for sports cars. This engine has the highest specific power output in its class, and when combined with the lightweight carbon MonoCell, produces a powerto-weight ratio that is exemplary. With abundant torque throughout the 8,500rpm rev range, 80% of the M838T engine’s torque is available below 2,000rpm, for example acceleration at any speed. Thanks to McLaren’s ground-breaking Proactive Chassis Control, the MP412C doesn’t need a heavy, mechanical anti-roll bar. This, combined with the incredible torsional rigidity of the Carbon

toolkit from titanium, and we cut the Connolly leather for the seats in special lightweight 0.7mm sections. Then, because gold was the best possible heat insulation material for the engine bay, we insulated it with 24-carat gold foil. The F1 is a unique driving experience thanks to a suite of pioneering design features, including the use of lightweight carbon composites, never used before on a sports car. Also, a unique central driving position was adopted for optimum visibility and perfect weight balance. The F1 soon reached a higher top speed than the Formula 1 cars that inspired it:

Chevrolet’s fresh new Sonic is here Chevrolet recently launched their Sonic fivedoor hatch, the latest to compete in the contested B-segment of the SA market. The Sonic is the first car based on Chevrolet’s Gamma platform and slots in above the

Aveo in the manufacturer’s local line-up. It’s fresh styling will certainly be a hit amongst the ladies as well as those that are conscious of their appearence. Power is generated by either a 1,4- or a 1,6-litre petrol engine, both mated with five-

speed manual gearbox. The 1,4-litre churns out 74 kW at 6 000 revs/ min and 130 Nm of torque at 4 000 revs/min. It’s fuel consumption is recorded at 5,8 litres/100 km on the combined cycle. The 1,6-litre delivers 85 kW at 6 000 revs/ min and 155 Nm of torque and consumes 6,5

litres/100 km. According to Chevrolet much development and effort went into the Sonic’s sophisticated cabin and ride quality, which is an improvement on the Aveo. Prices are expected to start at R155 000 for the 1,4 LS and R168 000 for the 1,6 LS.

New Mercedes ML Honda’s tourer lures the adventurer destined for SA’s shores in mid 2012 Mercedes-Benz’s tuning division, AMG, has given the ML the full treatment. The recently revealed ML63 AMG is fitted with a new 5,5-litre V8 engine and sprints to 100 km/h in under five seconds. The standard engine, fitted with a biturbo, pushes out 386 kW and 700 Nm of torque. With the AMG Performance Package these numbers increase to 410 kW and 760 Nm. There’s not much difference in the sprint to 100 km/h, 4,7 and 4,6 seconds respectively. Despite its high output, Mercedes attempted to keep the emissions level and fuel consumption as low as possible and equipped it with a stop/start system. Drive is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed AMG Speedshift transmission. There are three driving programmes – controlled efficiency, sport and manual – each with their own benefits. With the AMG kit, 20 inch five spoke wheels and low stance, the ML63 AMG looks powerful and aggressive. The interior is commanded by a four spoke AMG steering wheel, aluminum shift paddles, aluminum trim elements and leather upholstery. The new M-Class will reach SA in the first half of 2012.

Sales figures for dual purpose touring bikes have climbed considerably in the last few years and it has become more important to the adventurers to break away from the city. Honda went back to the drawing board and came up with a new, cost effective solution: the VFR800X Crossrunner. But how does the new Crossrunner differ from the old VFR800? Under their skins they are the same motorcycles: engine, main frame, suspension and swingarm look similar. It is in the styling that a new fresh look greets you. It possesses functionality and a purposeful look. The biggest change is the upright riding position. The low, comfortable seat and wide, raised handlebars give the Crossrunner comfort. The V4 engine is a jewel and provides more lowdown torque than an in-line four, but adds a lot of revs and power once the VTEC system kicks in at 6 500 revs/ min. The snarl of the exhaust echoes the performance of the four valves per cylinder.

Honda has done well with the calibrating of the fuelling and valve timing, and every change-over is smoother and more acceptable to the rider. Braking performance is very impressive with the good power and feel of the ABS. The linked system makes the bike feel stable under braking. The handling feels surefooted. Fuel range is quoted to be close to 400 km from a 21,5-litre tank and offroad ability is limited by the street tyres and road biased suspension. The best feature of the new Crossrunner is that it shows you new and wonderful places in absolute comfort. After a long ride, there are no aches and pains associated with sportsbike riding. Touring on this bike is effortless and fun. Fast Facts Price: R109 999 Engine: 782 cm3, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, 16-valve, DOHC, V4 Power: 74,9 kW at 10 000 r/min Torque: 72,8 Nm at 9 500 r/min Transmission: six-speed Suspension front: 43 mm telescopic forks with preload adjustment, 108 mm axle travel Suspension rear: Pro-link with gascharged damper, 119 mm axle travel Fuel capacity: 21,5 litres. Tzaneen is Limpopo-kampioen sport@bulletin.us.com

Foto: Voorsien

Skakel die sportkantoor by 015 306 7901/2 of mnr Stefan Nawrattel by 072 196 2812.

Foto’s voorsien
