Peace after serious dispute • The Vlei-gate saga continues •

Whilst the steam is buildig up in Tzaneen’s own “Vleigate” saga regarding developments in alleged wetlands, Tuesday saw a flair-up of anger at the new Lyfestyle Center on the R71. Two of our area’s most prominent businessbusiness men, Messrs Manny de Gouveia and Flip van Rooyen, got involved in a flare up over a fence and the border between their properproper ties. When Van Rooyen refused to budge, De Gouveia called the police, laid a formal charge against Van Rooyen (Case No CAS 255/7/2911 at the Tzaneen Police) and Van Rooyen was taken away by the po-

lice. They later took a statement from Van RooyRooy en. But on Wednesday the parties met with their legal teams, engineers and a director of Resilient, the developer of the new mall. Later on Wednesday both De Gouveia and Van Rooyen told the Bulletin that they were happy with the way the meeting had gone and they were hopeful that the matters causing misunderstanding, frustration and disdis contentment could be sorted amicably. Things started getting out of hand when a wall caved in, taking part of De Gouveia’s garden down a seven meter slope. On page 7 we show some “action” photo’s of the tête à tête.

Grootbroer?

Vlytige VLU-vroue verdra voorskooie

Drie weke is baie lank as ‘n mens hulle self moet besig hou!

A truck driver was rushed to hospital after he had lost control of his vehicle on the Georges Valley road. A large number of oranges, packed in boxes, flew off into the road and down the grass verge. Traffic on both sides was halted for some twenty minutes while police and the towing company cleared the road.

Economy is hampering the SPCA Pet owners hand in their pets at the SPCA due to the downturn in the economy. Bigger kennels are also needed for the larger dogs, said Ms Ellie Potgieter, Tzaneen SPCA’s chairperson at the SPCA’s annual general meeting earlier this week. She added that there were two rabies cases. Canines and animal issues were discussed at the meeting. Potgieter was re-elected for her fourth and final term of office. Mr John van Rooyen is the vice-chairman and Ms Ronelle van der Westhuizen is the treasurer. Feral cats in Tzaneen and Haenertsburg need community involvement. Haenertsburg has a colony of sixteen cats. Fireworks are to become a police matter and perpetrators will be fined or arrested. Upcoming events include the August cheap rates for pet sterilization, National Animal week when rural children are educated from 4-10 October and the donkey outreach programme in September (87 donkeys in a rural area will be treated). Messrs Bob Venter from Riverside and Dave du Toit from the Vervet Monkey Foundation gave advice on how to live harmoniously with the growing number of vervet monkeys. Potgieter thanked SanWild for rescuing and rehabilitating injured wildlife, Tzaneen Precision Engineering for fixing all SPCA vehicles, Mr Stefan van Rensburg for legal matters, Mr Ernst Faber for building new offices, Arbor Park Lodge for accommodating inspectors, Ms Linda Devenish for dog grooming, Northern Security and Ms Beth Haber for donating bricks, Sugar Loaf, Sugar Hill, Woolworths, Checkers, Sasko, Sunbake, Macadamia Village and many individuals from Tzaneen and Haenertsburg.

Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s Manager, Ms Constance Mametja, was nominated and chosen as June’s winner of Coke Zero and Bulletin’s Service Excellence Award. She has succeeded in bringing discipline to the GTM in a short time, as well as getting seriously involved in the community — attending functions and meetings on a scale that hasn’t been seen in a number of years. In congratulating her Mr Colin Jackson, local provincial manager of Coca-Cola, said “the community’s involvement in the monthly awards has grown dramatically and it is clear that the award is rated as prestigious; we are excited to be associated with the award and it would be interesting to see how it could be enhanced”. He said Mametja was an excellent choice and a dignified and meritorious winner. Bulletin’s editor Jean Aucamp said het couldn’t agree more with what Jackson had to say. He also expressed enthusiasm about the interest in the monthly award and indicated that rewarding people in the community for outstanding service could well be extended. He confirmed that Mametja was a popular choice. Mametja thanked the promotors/ sponsors and said she deeply appreciated the award and felt that she didn’t deserve it, since she was working in a team. In the photo are Mr Colin Jackson from Coca-Cola, Ms Mametja and Bulletin editor Jean Aucamp.

Black listing pays off for department

The black listing of companies who fail to complete contracts or deliver poor quality services has brought positive results for the Limpopo department of local government and housing. In an out of court settlement the department has recovered R1,5 million from a company after it failed to complete RDP houses. This was revealed by the MEC of the department, Mr Soviet Lekganyane, at a media briefing. “The department recently blacklisted 24 companies and their directors or members on the National Treasury Database of Restricted Suppliers. The main reason for blacklisting these companies is as a result of poor performance in the construction of RDP houses in the province from 1999 to 2008. “Among these companies is an entity, Legae Consortium CC, whose members are Messrs Tom Boya, Timothy Tebeila, Eugene Masete, David Hlabyago and Selaolela,” Lekganyane said. Boya and Tebeila are well known leaders of organised business in Limpopo and their blacklisting made headlines in the They will need for next year national media. It also resulted in some of Mss Ellie Potgieter, Ronelle van der Westhuizen them, like Tebeila, taking legal action against and Mr John van Rooyen are seen here during the department to clear their names. According to the MEC the department, the the SPCA’s AGM

department of national human settlement and Legae “realised that it is in the best interest of all parties to thrash out an out of court settlement” in this regard. This settlement was finally made an order of court and entails that: • Tebeila withdraws his high court application against all respondents; • Tebeila and/or Legae will pay the department R1,5 million which will be paid over a period of 12 months; • The department, Tebeila and Legae have undertaken, without any admission of liability and/ or conceding on merits of this matter, to remove Tebeila and Legae from the National Treasury Database of Restricted Suppliers. Lekganyane emphasised that the other companies remain blacklisted as the departments involved remain committed to clean, transparent and accountable governance. “The days of mediocrity in the provisioning of services are yesterday,” the MEC stressed.

Tebeila said he is delighted that the matter has been settled. — Limpopo News Service

A bookworm’s delight

Linda Wilkinson’s second hand bookstore in the romantic village of Haenertsburg, Memory~Hold~The~Door, has moved to bigger premises next to the Pennefather complex. The art shop moved out, Linda moved in and within just over a month she and her team of friends transformed the entire building. Retaining the old world charm, Linda has used clever paint finishes and added luxurious touches like comfortable armchairs, a fireplace and tables and chairs inside and outside for tea or coffee and cakes. Classical music plays softly in the background. Seated outside enjoying a cup of filter coffee was Zenda Cornelissen from Johannesburg. Her husband, the bookworm, was inside looking through hundreds of books and eventually made a choice of two books. Lynne Cocks and her mother Ros van Wyk from Polokwane were inside. Both love books and are always reading.

They were staying at a lodge for the long weekend and came across the bookstore whilst wandering through the village. Lynne says that they are both particularly fond of cookery books and armchair travelling. After spending hours deciding, Lynne chose the armchair traveller’s book Pole to Pole by Michael Palin and The South African

Zenda Cornelissen Letaba Hospital said goodbye to Ms Dikeledi Mmetle, the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s new executive mayor. She worked the last couple of years as PRO of the hospital. Mss Makhanani Shivambu and Florence Mthembi, assistant nurses at Letaba, are seen here during Mmetle’s farewell party.

Tzaneen post office’s stamp shortage is over The postmaster at the Tzaneen post office said on Wednesday that the problem regarding the shortage of postage stamps has now been resolved. He said they have received

sufficient stock and people shouldn’t experience problems again. The last couple of weeks it was almost impossible to obtain any stamps from the post office.

The Letaba Further Education and Training College put up a recruitment desk at Tzaneen Crossing with the aim of signing up interested students to study at the college. Here are Ms Motlatso Nkwana, Messrs Matlole Rabopepe and Eland Derick and Ms Dekeledi Nakana.

Ros said, “I prefer this second hand bookshop as it’s got so many old treasures and there are classic novels for the children as well as first editions.” Lynne said “I am finding lots of fascinating books here and I’m constantly looking for additions to the library that I’ve created for my children.” Further delightful and interesting features are being added to the unfinished section. — Susan Ettmayr

Ds Barry vd Merwe NG Kerk Letsitele

Vrydag 22 Julie

Let wel: hulle sê nie so nie!

So werk die Here in mense se lewens.

During April 2007 the Director General of DEAT downlisted both species( baboon and vervet monkeys) back to their former classification in a publication in the South Africa Government Gazette, without any consultation with stakeholders and roleplayers.’

Boldly passionate about Limpopo

The enormous potential of the province and the capacity of the people who cultivate this land called for an endeavour to meet people who are passionate about their Limpopo. They are seen as ambassadors of ongoing development, natural attractions, the cultural, the traditional and the heartbeat of South Africa’s northernmost province. They are exceptional persons who are not hesitant to call Limpopo their own. Mr Schalk van Schalkwyk, who has traded politics for the responsibilities of running Limpopo Communications and News Service and the Wolkberg Nguni Cattle Stud on his family farm between Wolkberg and Haenertsburg, is such an individual. He liberally sings the praises of the earth he hails from. The vast diversity of the province is a hugely positive factor, he states. Through its variety Limpopo offers more than other provinces. To him it is the home of cultures that have peacefully cohabitated for centuries and in future could only become a better place. Prophets of doom would be proved wrong because a positive attitude carries more weight than negative criticism, he stresses.

A positive approach to matters should not only stem from the conduct of political and church leaders, but be visible at grass roots level, as these are the people who influence decisions through their involvement in community and other organisations. “Words do not change things, but people’s actions do. Man’s actions are worth more than words. People should indicate positivity.” He is of the opinion that any person who can give input, whether justified criticism or a positive contribution, eventually makes a difference in society. He regards the human element as Limpopo’s biggest attribute. Van Schalkwyk expresses excitement over the tangible pulsating energy present in the people of the province and the structures they represent. The people of Limpopo are champions across various codes, he indicates and he lists examples of provincial and national level achievements in the political, economic,

business and sporting sectors. Asked about his perceptions of the heartbeat of Limpopo, he responds by saying that he appreciates the countryside, but that the economic boom due to minerals and other deposits sketch unrivalled future growth. “Development cannot be hampered.” On the issue of Limpopo boasting diverse landscapes, he mentions that no other country in the world has similar animal and bird species as South Africa. He simultaneously refers to the natural beauty of the rivers and valleys and tourism possibilities the province holds. Some treasures are, however, still not fully explored and the tourism potential of these attractions requires more attention. Van Schalkwyk, who is fluent in five indigenous languages, is an ardent traveller. His passion for the open road, camping and nature is shared by his wife Anette, who is also a bird lover. Together they have toured Australia and New Zealand extensively and did

a road trip of Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania and Namibia. Next on their to-do-list is a caravan tour to Namaqualand. He raises the opinion that travelling enriches a person’s life. Despite having been to other destinations, he believes South Africa still has more to offer than any other countries. One of SA’s biggest problems, Van Schalkwyk stresses, is the fact that its residents do not realise its riches. He regards one of SA’s strengths the fact that it is a multi-denominational country that is mostly inclined towards Christianity and therefore people are tolerant towards each other. Being this vocal on the things close to his heart, Schalk van Schalkwyk is a boldly passionate and spontaneous ambassador for Limpopo. He is associated with the Bulletin as our representative and negotiator with the Limpopo government. A relationship between Van Schalkwyk and the Bulletin’s publisher started long before the newspaper was started seven years ago. Mr Schalk van Schalkwyk, a boldly passionate ambassador for Limpopo.

New fence to keep wild animals at bay The community at Muyexe village near Giyani will now have peace of mind, knowing that their livestock will be safe from wild animals that used to roam around in the village preying on them. This comes after the department of rural development and land reform built them a 17 km long buffer zone fence at a cost of R9 million, to prevent wild animals from the Kruger National Park

from going into the village and eat their cattle, goats and sheep. With the electrified buffer zone fence erected along the exsiting fence that is not electrified, the animals have no chance of roaming into the village. According to Mr Ben Maluleke, the chief, they used to lose about five livestock per month. “It’s three months since the fence has been erected and we’ve not had any

complaint about loss of livestock,” he said. However, the national chief director of the department of rural development and land reform, Mr Clinton Hammond, warned that the fence would need maintenance. “The buffer fence including the farming and the grazing land that we fenced will need 210 people to be employed to do maintenance,” he said. — Report & photo: Orlando Chauke

67 minutes for Nelson Mandela day

a community tribute to a remarkable man that united a nation on every front

— Uitgewer.

E a r l y Years Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Mvezo, a village near Mthatha in the Transkei, on July 18, 1918, to Nonqaphi Nosekeni and Henry Mgadla Mandela. His father was the principal councillor to the Act-ing Paramount Chief of the Thembu. Rolihlahla literally means “pulling the branch of a tree”. After his father’s death in 1927, the young Rolihlahla dreamed of making his own contribution to the freedom struggle of his people. After receiving a primary education at a local mission school, where he was given the name Nelson, he was sent to the Clarkebury Boarding Institute for his Junior Certificate and then to Healdtown, a Wesleyan secondary school of some repute, where he matriculated. He and his cousin Justice ran away to Johannesburg where he was introduced to Walter Sisulu in 1941 and it was Sisulu who arranged for him to do his articles at Lazar Sidelsky’s law firm. He entered politics in earnest while studying, and joined the African National Congress in 1943. At the height of the Second World War, in 1944, a small group of young Africans who were members of the African National Congress, banded together under the leadership of Anton Lembede. In September 1944 they came together to found the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL). Mandela was elected as the league’s National Secretary in 1948.

Emerging as Leader Spurred on by the victory of the National Party which won the 1948 allwhite elections, civil disobedience was accepted as official ANC policy. When the ANC launched its Campaign for the Defiance of Unjust Laws in 1952, Mr Mandela, by then President of the Youth League, was elected National Volunteerin-Chief. For his part in the Defiance Campaign, Mr Mandela was convicted of contravening the Suppression of Communism Act and given a suspended prison sentence. During this period of restric-

torneys admission examination and was admitted to the profession. He opened a practice in Johannesburg in August 1952, and in December, in partnership with Tambo, opened South Africa’s first black law firm in central Johannesburg. Their professional status didn’t earn Mr Mandela and Tambo any personal immunity from the brutal apartheid laws. During the early fifties Mr Mandela played an important part in leading the resistance to the Western Areas removals, and to the introduction of Bantu Education. During the whole of the ‘50s, Mr Mandela was the victim of various forms of repression. He was banned, arrested and imprisoned. In June, he was married to Nomzamo Winnie Mandela. Continued next page

14 Madiba, The Trials, continued from previous page

The Trials The Treason Trial collapsed in 1961 as South Africa was being steered towards the adoption of the republic constitution. With the ANC now illegal the leadership picked up the threads from its underground headquarters and Nelson Mandela emerged at this time as the leading figure in this new phase of struggle. Under the ANC’s inspiration, 1 400 delegates came together at an All-in African Conference in Pietermaritzburg during March 1961. Forced to live apart from his family (and he and Winnie by now had two daughters, Zenani born in 1959 and Zindzi, born 1960) moving from place to place to evade detection. At the Rivonia Trial, Mr Mandela explained: “At the beginning of June 1961 I and some colleagues came to the conclusion that violence in this country was inevitable.” In 1962 Mandela left the country, as ‘David Motsamayi’, and travelled abroad for several months.

Prisoner 466/64 Not long after his return to South Africa Mr Mandela was arrested. Since he considered the prosecution a trial of the aspirations of the African people, Mr Mandela decided to conduct his own defence. Mr Mandela was convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment. Later he and 10 others were charged with sabotage. The Rivonia Trial, as it came to be known, lasted eight months. Most of the accused stood up well to the prosecution, having made a collective decision that this was a political trial and that they would take the opportunity to make public their political beliefs. Three of the accused, Mr Mandela, Sisulu and Govan Mbeki also decided that, if they were given the death sentence, they would not appeal. Mr Mandela’s statement in court during the trial is a classic in the history of the resist-

Bulletin ance to apartheid, and has been an inspiration to all who have opposed it. He ended with these words: “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. It is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” All but two of the accused were found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment on June 12, 1964. In March 1982, after 18 years, he was suddenly transferred to Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town (with Sisulu, Raymond Mhlaba and Andrew Mlangeni) and in December 1988 he was moved to the Victor Verster Prison near Paarl, from where he was eventually released. Nevertheless Mr Mandela did initiate talks with the apartheid regime in 1985, when he wrote to Minister of Justice Kobie Coetsee. They first met later that year when Mr Mandela was hospitalised for prostate surgery. Released on February 11, 1990, Mr Mandela plunged wholeheartedly into his life’s work, striving to attain the goals he and others had set out almost four decades earlier. In a life that symbolises the triumph of the human spirit, Nelson Mandela accepted the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize (along with FW de Klerk). The era of apartheid formally came to an end on the April 27, 1994, when Nelson Mandela voted for the first time in his life – along with his people. Rolihlahla Nelson Dalibunga Mandela was inaugurated as President of a democratic South Africa on May 10, 1994. Mr Mandela stepped down in 1999 after one term as President – but for him there has been no real retirement. He set up three foundations bearing his name: The Nelson Mandela Foundation, The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and The Mandela-Rhodes Foundation.. Nelson Mandela never wavered in his devotion to democracy, equality and learning. Despite terrible provocation, he has never answered racism with racism. His life has been an inspiration, in South Africa and throughout the world, to all who are oppressed and deprived, to all who are opposed to oppression and deprivation. The Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Bakgakga Taxi Association, House of Traditional Leaders, local business people, Maake Plaza tenants and Edwin Komana Construction volunteers are major stakeholders to this project, while other people donated with groceries, clothes, money, building material and of course gave their 67 minutes to the Maenetja family. Kgoshi Sekororo, Chairman of the House of Traditional Leaders, said Ubuntu is still a living spirit in African culture. “We are all very impressed about this project without feeling that we are contesting with anyone”, he said. Familiarity to the simulator and controls will assist the learner in driving the “vehicle”. This lesson is perfect for beginner drivers who have no knowledge of cars or driving and for those who know but need to polish their knowledge on the controls. At the end of the lesson the learner gets a detailed report on how the lesson went. The first lesson is to test the learner’s driving skills and pin point specific areas to focus on. Afsim have now relocated their premises to 25 Boet Lombard Street in Aqua Park Tzaneen. • The next lessons to the point when the learner is ready to go for the real thing, will be explained in future issues of Bulletin.

A glass of red is good for your health “A glass of well-made red wine is good for your health,” says Rijk Melck (51). A doctor by profession, Rijk’s entitled to make such a statement. Rijk left the medical profession to join the family business, an old established vineyard in Stellenbosch.

Speaking at a five-course dinner accompanied by five different wines at The Red Plate restaurant in Haenertsburg, Rijk said Muratie is one of the top five privately owned vineyards, the third oldest in the country and steeped in history. He says that it’s not possible to go totally organic but has been getting insects from Du Roi outside Letsitele for the last five years, to combat diseases without chemicals. The Muratie estate specialises in red wines such as shiraz, merlot and pinot noir. The estate also produces blended white wines and chardonnays. Rijk will be back in Limpopo at the end of the month for the Wine Show at Meropa Sun in Polokwane. — Susan Ettmayr

cellent results can be attributed to a dedicated staff, a stimulating learning environment and a disciplined routine offered at the shool. On the photo is Mr Gary Muller, the headmaster of Blue Mountain College, receiving the award. Blue Mountain College is also pleased to announce that it will be introducing new subjects such as Visual Arts, Design, Dance Studies, Dramatic Arts, Music, Engineering Graphics and Design for Grade 10 level for 2012. These subjects will be taught by qualified and experienced teachers who will present this stimulating curriculum in well equipped facilities. This exciting development is important for Limpopo as there are few other schools offering these subjects in the province. Learners interested in these subjects are therefore advised to apply as soon as possible to ensure a place in the gr 10 class for 2012 which can only accommodate fifteen pupils. For further information please visit the school website at www.bluemc.co.za or call 078 470 3102.

National Credit Act — the bank’s criteria Q: What credit records are financial institutions considering when potential homeowners apply for bonds? A: The banks are looking at all possible records, internal and external, from returned items on your bank accounts, to judgments, defaults, and poor payment profiles. Q: If anyone has a black mark against their credit record, how long does that reference count against them? A: A judgment stands for 30 years; however a black mark may be removed after 5 years. Q: Can you receive a negative credit rating for missing a simple payment on your store account or credit card? A: Yes you can, as this affects your payment profile, and will reduce your credit score. Q: Does the bank consider the amount skipped or merely the principle that payment has not been made? A: Based on the payment profile, it will be seen as a payment skipped, which can be seen as a sign of being over committed. Q: Why is it critical to have a clean credit record when applying for a bond? A: A clear credit record is a sign of a good credit behavior. Q: What counts as credit on your records? For example, you may be applying to purchase a second property and have a R500K bond on your existing house, a R50K overdraft facility, a R30K limit on your credit card and several store cards each with a R5K limit and all of these are taken into account when looking at your available credit – even though you have paid up the bond, do not use the overdraft facility, never allow your credit card to reach its maximum (and pay off the amount owed every month often in advance) and do not even use the store cards. A: As this is credit available to the client, the banks will take the minimum installment into account, as monthly expenses. It is recommended not to keep accounts open with limits if you are not using it. Q: How then can purchasers look to reducing their credit such that they qualify for a higher bond value? A: Do not keep unnecessary accounts open. Q: What qualifies consumers to be “in good standing” with credit bureaus? A: Not to pay your accounts late, and honor your commitments - in time, on time. Q: How can default judgments be rescinded to improve people’s credit ratings? How do they even establish they have judgments against them if they are unaware of the issue? A: Everybody is entitled to a free credit check once a year; it is recommended that all consumers contact transunion for their free credit check. This can be done online at www.transunion.co.za or 0861 482 482

This week’s fitness tip Ettienne van Wyngaardt (Fitness specialist)

Whatever calories you intake, your body will generally use them if needed, or store them. The body converts extra calories into fat to store them as extra fuel. If you intake 2 500 calories in a day, you only burn 2 000 calories. Your body will likely store the extra 500 calories as fat. 0,45 kg of fat equals 3 500 calories, the equivalent of what you would gain in one week had you eaten those extra 500 calories per day. 500 calories might sound like a lot, but ac-

tually that is equivalent to 2/3 of a teriyaki chicken bowl, or a candy bar and a large soda. It can add up quickly! So, how do you burn fat? To get your body to “want” to burn fat, you have to increase the demand for energy in the body. Generally this is achieved by performing cardiovascular exercise activities that increase the heart rate over a prolonged period of time.

geprys deur rugbykenners soos Boots & All se aanbieder, Owen Khumalo.

Mountain2Mountain draws 300 ... and helps to boost Tzaneen’s image

The weekend’s Mountain2Mountain Cycling Event in Tzaneen was once again a great success. With just under 300 entries in the 106 km, 63 km and 28,5 km races and more than R70 000 in prize money, it proved to be a memorable event. It’s certainly one that puts Tzaneen on the sports map. One of the remarkable achievements in the race was that of Erick Kapp, a disabled cyclist who completed the 106 km race. He won R1 750,00 and a back pack. The race was won by Hanco Kachelhoffer, followed by Dennis van Niekerk in second and James Perry in third. Leandré Janse van Rensburg, Shani Rudder and Marti Rudder, all of Le’Club in Tzaneen, were in the first three places in the ladies’ division of the 63,6 km race. The 106 km race was a seeding race for the Cape Argus Tour, one of twelve in the country and the only one in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. More than a hundred volunteers and staff helped keep the wheels rolling. The races were recorded by SuperCycling and will be broadcast on DSTV in August.
