Nightmare experience at new mall

Wall caves in

“There was a strange noise, it felt as if the earth was shaking and then part of the garden disappeared. I ran to get away from it.” This is how a gardener working for well-known Tzaneen businessman Mr Manny de Gouveia experienced Saturday’s landslide that took part of his garden down a seven meter wall. De Gouveia is now deeply worried about his property, since the gaping hole is less than three meters from his house. “Fortunately it happened now, beLEFT: The portion of the fore the start of the rainy seawall that caved in took son. Something needs to be part of Mr Manny de done urgently, to retain the Gouveia’s garden and the corner of his house area and avoid further landis less than three me- slides and possible injury to ters away. He says his people,” De Gouveia said. nights have suddenly become nightmarish, since he doesn’t know what to expect next.

However, he is not very optimistic about the situation being sorted out in a satisfactory way soon. The works engineer of Vlaming Construction , Mr Rob Hare, could not be reached for comment before our deadline and Mr Flip van Rooyen, the contractor who is doing the ground works, couldn’t be reached either. Neither could we speak to Mr Jannie Swart, the GTM’s building inspector, who was notified of the problem. He was “out in the field”, according to the GTM’s switchboard operator. We tried his cell phone, but he did not take calls at the time. In the mean time there seem to be another problem, since the permission to destroy the wetland is under dispute from certain parties. It is obviously too late now, since the wetland has been destroyed.

The constable from Mamitwa has come home, this time as a general. Meet our new police chief — p 9

GELUK MET 96 GOUE JARE!

Simon is beter

This photo clearly shows that part of the neighbour’s garden is now on a lower level...

Sy sê Simon se herstel is ‘n wonderwerk.

Vlieg sal nie verbaas wees as daar binnekort êrens teen ‘n muur staan: “Hang Malema or he will hang you.”

Primary school children braved icy weather on Saturday to take part in the wildlife awareness campaign entitled The Sidewalk and Paper Art Competition in Haenertsburg. The three topics were endangered rhinos, the protected vervet monkeys and the endemic dwarf chameleon. Vervet monkey troops live in the village and surrounding areas. There is almost no research available on the endemic dwarf chameleon. The children were made aware that picking up these reptiles is detrimental to their well-being. Part of the entrance fee funds will go towards neutering the colony of feral cats residing at the village post office. Photo & report by Susan Ettmayr

To ensure that land is used productively, food security is guaranteed and to provide employment for members of rural communities, government is calling on the agricultural sector to act as mentors on land reform farms. The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform seeks suitable persons from the agricultural sector as mentors on “land reform projects in distress, acquired since 1994”. In advertisements in the printed media throughout Limpopo it is stressed that the department has decided to recapitalize all land reform projects, acquired since 1994, in distress. “Working together we can do more to improve the quality of life for people living in rural areas,” the department stresses in the advertisement. The department says potential mentors should have extensive farming experience and must be successful commercial farmers, either active or retired and may already be working with various communities and are involved in skills transfer and training to de-

New mall to open in November Construction of the first phase of 18 000 m2 of the new Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre next to the R71 is on schedule and the opening will be in November. The Greater Tzaneen Municipality‘s Project Wednesday (when senior officials and councillors visit areas where development takes place) saw the Vlaming Construction open the gates to give the GTM’s visitors a glance at what the centre will look like. Mr Rob Hare gave the group a tour of the construction site and addressed some of the questions that came up. He said the first phase of the centre will have 2 500 parking bays. Checkers, Fruit & Veg, Wimpy, Cardies, Debonairs, Fish aways, Van Heerdens, Lily Blue as well as five other clothing stores, a filling station, a fast food restaurant and bank will take up space in the first phase. The project has thus far created employment for 700 people, forty of whom are women. Hare is seen here explaining something to Ms Conny Mametja, the municipal manager. Photo: Beaunice Mnisi

Total progress at Muyexe as 2 year term elapses Young children sitting in front of computers browsing the net at Muyexe Village near Giyani delete the picture of a village known as one of the poorest in the country. The introduction of rural development projects in the village in 2009 by minister for rural development and land reform Gugile Nkwinti, brought about services mostly found in urban areas. Today, at the end of a twoyear term, the question is whether it has achieved its aim of creating jobs and turning the village into a semi-township or not. However, in terms of infrastructure, the project has more to show than what anyone would have expected of it. This include a post office, which is currently being used as both postal office

Ta’ Zelda is 96 Me Zacharia Jacomina Venter — beter bekend as Tannie Zelda — van Tzaneen vier Sondag haar 96 ste verjaarsdag!

and a bank where people can withdraw cash of up to R1 000 regardless of which bank they use. “We’ve free internet, library and many other infrastructures such as a police station, sports ground and many more that other

villages don’t have — what more could you want,” commented one of the residents in the village, Amukelani Baloyi. Another satisfied resident, Tsakani Maluleke who received an RDP house and a free energy generating solar device, distributed free to houses without electricity, said she felt “the government has done enough already,” in terms of building of RDP houses

in the village. “By the time they install electricity in this area, we’d have benefitted twice including the solar systems,” she said. Meanwhile Mancena project, in the agricultural sector, is currently blooming after receiving a huge boost from the government. The project has grown from a small none-commercial project to a project that is able to produce a steady supply of vegetables, some of which are sold in shops in Giyani, according to its project manager Maria Ngoveni. With all the development — such as libraries, clinics, a satellite police station, free internet and many others — the village has become a semi-urban area where residents enjoy the abundance of services and modern technology at a fingertip. However, when it comes to creating stable jobs some people still feel that the government has not done enough, since most of the jobs that have been created were temporary. “You can’t support your family with a threemonths job — it feeds your family today and leaves them hungry tomorrow,”

said Portia Maluleke, a single mother with three kids. According to a progress report released in October last year (submitted by Mr Louis Mabunda, the IDP manager of the Greater Giyani Municipality), 535 jobs, most of which are temporary ranging from three weeks to twelve months, have been created. The report also reveals that only four people have secured permanent employment from the project at the time of release. Other new developments that are currently under construction and are expected to create new permanent jobs are a sports centre and a 17 km fence circling the fields where many villagers would be ploughing to make a living. “There’s also a water purifying project that will be coming,” explained Mabunda, saying the project has been expanded to include other villages in Giyani. When asked when the project is expected to end, since its two-year term has elapsed, Mabunda said he is not sure. “There are projects that have been delayed,” which still need to be implemented before the project moves on.

Tell us if you’re not paid Late payment is cited as one of the reasons why small businesses fail. And one of the chief culprits of this practice is Government. Economists have long realised that the lifeblood of the economy and the chief creators of employment are small and medium-sized enterprises. Our central government has for a long time paid lip-service to the importance of these small firms and promised to introduce measures to assist them. These included preferential procurement regulations and the easing of labour regulations and bureaucratic red tape. But no visible progress has been made. Tebogo Khaas of the SMME Forum summed it up in a recent article in the Sunday Times.: “The general attitude of public sector officials is that if you’re small business, they’re doing you a favour by giving you business.” We are mindful of the fact that, to quote Khaas

again: “If you don’t pay small businesses on time, they die, and this creates unemployment, starving families and more pressure on the welfare system.” Does this happen in our Municipality? Does the GTM have a policy of procurement from small businesses? And if so, do they pay them on time? The Bulletin would welcome hearing the experiences of any local company which supplies goods or services to any of our municipalities (Greater Tzaneen, Greater Letaba, Greater Phalaborwa, Maruleng and Mopani District Municipality) in this regard. We would also welcome assurances from the GTM that they do buy out services from the local community — it certainly appears that the cutting of grass on parks and pavements is being sub-contracted which is commendable.

Nothing sinister? Who in the GTM is trying to pull a fast one? Word is that a representative of the ACPD has been nominated to the executive committee (exco) instead of one from the DA. Nothing sinister in this, is there? It is a tradition that an opposition member is elected to serve on the executive committee which is the principal committee of the council of the municipality. As such it receives reports from the other committees of the council, disposes of those which the committee is authorised to do in terms of its delegated powers and forwards the remainder of the reports together with its recommendations to the full council for decision. All well and good. But the Municipal Structures Act sets out the composition of an exco: It must be composed in such a way that parties and interests represented in council are represented in the exco in the same proportions as they are represented in council. There was only one ACPD councillor last year and three from the DA. Last year a representative of the DA sat on the Exco. And the DA representation is greater this year. So why this devious ploy? According to the Constitution, “Members of a Municipal Council are entitled to participate in its proceedings and those of its committees in a manner that (a) allows parties and interests reflected within the Council to be fairly represented; (b) is consistent with democracy; and (c) may be regulated by national legislation. Concern has been expressed regarding election procedures of exco members in many municipalities, according to reports. It is our opinion that, if the procedures followed were not legitimate, the results of the election can be challenged, overturned and a new election scheduled.

met hul eie Cirilliese skrif dit ook met nie-Russiese eiename. Byvoorbeeld: Cirillies = AHATOЛИЙ COBчaб;

Vuur is `n wonderlike ding. Mooi naweek!

Let wel: hulle sê nie so nie!

Baie baie dankie.

Vervets under threat Dave du Toit, chairman of the Vervet Monkey Foundation, Tzaneen, writes: Vervets are under severe threat as never before and their numbers are undoubtedly on the decline. Natural areas suitable for them are rapidly being eroded away by commercial, industrial, residential and agricultural development, forcing them to live in everdecreasing areas, making them more visible and creating the illusion that their numbers are increasing as they struggle to survive in the urban human world we have created. The vervet monkey is listed on CITES appendix 2 and we need to respect this. The world population has reached seven billion and it’s time we started facing reality — it’s not the animals that are multiplying at an uncontrollable rate it’s us humans. The animals aren’t going out to commit a crime or being malicious, they are simply trying to survive on the meagre pieces that we have not destroyed. Consumers all over the world are asking for environmentally friendly produce and now is the time to start working towards achieving this goal. Each troop of Vervets lives within its own territory. During daily foraging, troops often separate into a number of foraging groups so creating the false impression that more than one troop occupies a particular area. The

troop will reunite into one group at sundown. Natural predators have been exterminated in many areas. However, these have been replaced by lethal, human-related dangers such as vehicles, dogs, electrocution, poisoning, trapping for muti and use in laboratories. The custodians of our wildlife are actually you and me and it’s up to us to work out methods to farm with our wildlife; we have to find a solution to live together. Every single animal has a role in the eco-system, many trees cannot germinate without going through the digestive system of a vervet, much like fish in dams will deplete in numbers the less hippos there are, without bees we struggle to pollinate plants, so everything we do has a knock on affect to our future. A vervet monkey’s diet consists largely of vegetative matter. A large percentage of this comes from acacia trees, grasses, leaves, flowers and insects. Fruit forms less than 20% of what they eat. Although vervets have diverse diets with over 75 different food species being identified and consumed they concentrate mainly on the ones mentioned above. Vervets only utilise a small percentage of what’s available to them. When vervets start looking for other food sources it’s a sign that the natural vegetation is at risk of disappearing and is no longer in a healthy sustainable condition for wildlife. By planting indigenous trees, shrubs and flowers that provide Vervets with natural food and shelter the negative impact of these animals on our lives can be minimized. We are happy to offer advice and suggestions to people. Leaflets are available with do’s and don’ts. We are also looking for people to record sightings of vervets with numbers seen and exact locations. E-mail info to info@vervet.za.org and visit the website www.vervet.za.org or call 083 4545 381. • Letter shortened — Editor

No job too big or too small for Wespro’s Rassie and Riaan

Rotarians help with water

WesPro’s proud owners, Messrs Henri Ras (Rassie) and Riaan van der Walt, have twenty years experience in their field.

WesPro Services in Tzaneen was the initiative of two innovative businessmen with twenty years experience. WesPro undertakes construction, electrical, metalwork and mechanical engineering. They do work in the commercial, farming and domestic sections.

References of previous work done are available on request. WesPro is committed to providing quality service and believes that no job is too big or too small. Their service area is Tzaneen and the surrounding areas, Phalaborwa, Louis Trichardt, Hoedspruit and Polokwane.

Grants have been obtained from the Rotarian Safe Water & Sanitation Foundation to supply water to four schools in the rural areas of Tzaneen, where there is a lack of running water. Boreholes, water tanks, tank stands, submersible pumps, pipes and trenches have already been installed at Zivuko High School and currently at Mafarana Senior Primary School, Mapitula Primary and Xivodze Primary, as well as Nkakasana School. Rotarians Theo and Emmie Welthagen have been the stallwarts in obtaining funds for this project and Welthagen and Rotarian André Boekee are at the helm of this project.

New police cluster commander wants safe streets Cassandra Mongatane cassandra@bulletin.us.com

“The criminals must watch out, we are coming for them and we will be harsh,” says General Khombomini Maggy Mathebula. Mathebula is not new to the police. Her experience goes back to 1988 when she started her police career in the Soweto Flying Squad. From there she moved to Tzaneen for five years. She then moved up the ranks and became the Station Commander in Modjadjiskloof. In 2005 she was promoted to crime prevention coordinator for the Mopani district. Two months later her skills were needed in Musina and she was transferred there as crime prevention coordinator. In 2008 she was promoted to provincial head of Limpopo’s crime prevention office.

After a good two year service to the people of Limpopo, she was transferred to the Western Cape as the cluster commander in Worcester — and she was promoted to the rank of major general. Mathebula is no stranger to Tzaneen; she is a local girl, born in Mamitwa. She says she doesn’t bring changes, but she has identified key problems in the area. She will be focusing more on rape issues, especially at Ritavi and Bolobedu. “My aim is to make sure that rape cases are dealt with, especially

when it comes to young children. “I would like to see the streets safe for all and also to ensure that the police of this area provide good service to the people.” She believes that the community should play a role in making sure that service delivery is excellent. She hopes that the community will help the police in ensuring that the area is safe by communicating with the police. “I have a message for the youth: you should know that you live once and every moment comes once. Do not misuse your opportu-

nities by giving in to crime. Even though you might be educated a criminal record can ruin your chances of becoming a successful generation.” The youth that are interested in helping not only the police but the community with crime prevention issues are welcome to go to their nearest police station, and ask for the crime prevention officer for more information, she says. In the past few years the police has established good relationships with other departments. General Mathebula hopes that the relationships will grow even more. As we said good-bye, the General reminds us to publish her cell phone number — 082 499 1969 — and to extend her invitation to the public to call her if they fail to get help from the police.

Mediclinic gets fresh new brand identity

South African private hospital group Mediclinic launched a crisp new brand identity. The revised Mediclinic brand depicts a lot more than a mere change of the corporation’s logo and visual identity. Instead it demonstrates the group’s commitment to align its past excellence to a brand that will continue to bring outstanding medical care to its patients — supported by deliberate scientific expertise — under a unified international umbrella. “Our aspiration as a company is to become an international hospital group, not simply a group of hospitals in different countries. A unified group model brings strength. For that reason the one brand we readily and unanimously chose, was Mediclinic. “We will no longer be Medi-Clinic Corporation, but instead Mediclinic International. We firmly believe that our new brand identity will become a living ethos that underpins the future success of our business,” states Dr Edwin Hertzog, chairman of the group since its formation in 1983. After strong growth in 2010, Mediclinic sees future opportunities in all its operational platforms — now only under the support of an orchestrated brand. The provision of a carefully-controlled environment — not only for patients, but also for medical practitioners — is pivotal to the group’s future business planning. As such, Mediclinic continues to invest significantly to maintain, upgrade and expand hospitals to improve the company’s global offering. “As a group we are confident that the direction and focus of the internationally focused brand will contribute to the profitability and sustainability of the group. “Although we remain three operating platforms with operations in Southern Africa, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates, we will function as an undeviating whole, while respecting each platform’s flexibility and local significance,” states Mr Danie Meintjes, CEO of Mediclinic International and chairman of Mediclinic Southern Africa. Mediclinic Southern Africa will remain truthful to its local context. The South African platform aims to position itself as the preferred acute care private hospital service provider of the future through continued recruitment and retention of world-class medical practitioners that will feed South Africa’s medical resource pipeline in the future. “Mediclinic Southern Africa will keep its focus on verifiable cost effective quality care and patient satisfaction. We believe recruiting and retaining top class medical

practitioners remains our strength. Our new brand rationale strengthens and supports our vision to help build a sustainable health future for South Africa,” states Mr Koert Pretorius, CEO of Mediclinic Southern Africa “We support the government’s policy to increase access to affordable quality healthcare services, and we are following with interest the process to develop a National Health Insurance (NHI) model for the country,” continues Pretorius. The fact that Mediclinic Southern Africa has the highest number of internationally accredited facilities in Southern Africa bodes well for the future. “Recent research indicates that 96% of patients would recommend the hospital group to friends and family and 97% of patients would also recommend the treating doctor. “And, with access to a large community of medical specialists through the group’s 68 hospitals and eight clinics, across three continents, patients will reap the benefits of our expertise. Locally, the placement of the right calibre personnel remains a key imperative to the company,” states Pretorius. “At any of the Mediclinic hospitals around the world, we want patients to feel that the brand is lived by all. Our main objective is to introduce patients to a carefully controlled environment, fashioned by a team of worldclass experts who can guide

them through a customised treatment process orchestrated to specifically deliver better outcomes,” says Meintjes. “Because we know our patients value our authority as much as our empathy, the Mediclinic brand seeks, at all times, a finely tuned balance between a scientific, expert-dominated approach and a considered, respectful human approach”. Biren Valodia, Chief Marketing Officer for Mediclinic Southern Africa says it is an exciting time to be part of an international brand, as it truly helps to build the group’s competitive edge and stimulates its presence in global markets. “Patients will recognise changes in their hospital from the exterior signage to the way they are welcomed at the door. We are getting rid of the clutter. Right from admission through finding their way inside the hospital, down to recovery and follow-up, we believe the new brand philosophy has the potential to transform and inspire our staff and delight our patients,” concludes Valodia.

SA rowers return to the Tzaneen Dam for training The Tzaneen Dam hosted the SA u.23 and senior rowing teams for the past two weeks for some intense training for upcoming international events. The eighteen athletes is training under the watchful eyes of their four coaches and physiotherapist. The rowers practice for five hours a day – two hours in the morning and evening and an hour at lunch.

Bulletin

The rowers alternate between training in Europe and in Pretoria. This time last year they were training in Greece. The Tzaneen Dam is the perfect place to practice this time of the year because of the lower altitude and the warmer temperature. The teams have just returned from competing at the World Rowing Cup II in Hamburg, Germany, and are glad to be back in South Africa.

Relay ’11: Jy moet daar wees!

ABOVE: The rowing boats of the SA u.23 and senior teams became a familiar sight on the Tzaneen Dam the past two weeks.

Dit is veral indrukwekkend, aangesien dit Tzaneen se debuutRelay was. For Life 2010 so ‘n groot sukses was. Meer as honderd spanne

Belangstellendes kan me Juanine Jackson by ptcash@tiscali.co.za of 082 576 5716 kontak. 2011 se Relay For Life word beplan vir 11 November.

This week’s fitness tip Ettienne van Wyngaardt (Fitness specialist)

You and only you have the power to make your life better. I dare you to take charge of your body and make a commitment to improve your lifestyle. Take a dare with someone and put money on it! The one that loses the most weight in 6 weeks is the winner. If you put all your effort into it and really stick to your meal and training plan, you will lose weight. The only trick is

to stay motivated, that’s why you need to put some pressure on yourself and you must realize that you can lose your money if you don’t stick to your program. So, come on and make that dare and put some money on it!
