Crisis is looming • Blackouts for Tzaneen an ominous reality yet again •

Tzaneen’s electricity system is in danger of collapse, according to the Integrated Development Plan for the Greater Tzaneen Municipality for 2011/12 which has just been released. The report states: “The system has deteriorated to unacceptable levels which will ultimately cause the total and imminent collapse of some part of the network, unless drastic and immediate intervention is undertaken.” The situation is due to “a combination of phenomenal growth and insufficient capital reinvestment”. Applications for funding of over R800 million were made to various government departments during early 2007 but “no positive reaction has been received to date.” This state of affairs could lead to possible sanctions by the National Electricity Regulator for non-compliance. Some 50% of the network has reached the end of its projected lifespan. This has resulted in rotten poles and the breaking of overhead conductors due to ageing. Some

of the distribution transformers have also exceeded their lifespan and loading capacity. “Old technology” steel earth wires have become brittle with ageing and overload, and need to be replaced by aluminium conductors. The neglected state of the system, as well as future maintenance, requires either the total rebuilding of overhead lines or refurbishing. A start has been made in remedying the situation but a remaining backlog of over 500 km required attention. Increased breakdowns and power outages have led to loss of revenue, increased maintenance cost, demotivated and overworked employees and (wait for it) dissatisfied customers. More than 70% of rural personnel’s man hours is spent on breakdowns instead of planned maintenance. There are significant anomalies in supply. On the one hand, the GTM is one of the largest non-Eskom distributors of electricity in the country, distributing to an area of 3 500 square

km. But on the other, Eskom services Nkowankowa, Lenyenye and surrounding areas which fall within the municipal area. The GTM supplies electricity to the Letsitele farming area, Eiland and Gravelotte, but these areas fall under the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality. The Regional Electricity Distribution System, which has been designed to address these problems has not yet been implemented. A comprehensive management information system costing R2,5m is required to replace the existing paper system to conform with minimum Eskom standards. Another R10m is required for essential test equipment for fault locating, supply monitoring and line building, as well as vehicles. Tzaneen’s maximum metered demand for electricity is 107 MVA which compares with (the vastly bigger) Polokwane’s figure of 120 MVA. The corresponding electrical budgets of the two towns are vastly different. • Also read our reports on pages 6 & 7.

Matrics The last tango

It sounds unreal, but the time to start saying farewell to matric pupils has come again. Stanford Lake College’s matric kicked off the matric farewell functions for 2011. Seen at the school’s last matric dance were Dillen McGaffin with date Xyza Stander, Rudi Nell with Simone Muller, Stuart Hillary with his date Lizanne Steenkamp and Justin Mitchel with Kristina Hopkins. • See story and photo on page 3.

Ongelukig sluip daar soms foute in.

Matrics start saying goodbye to school Beaunice Machitela Stanford Lake College held their annual matric farewell dance at Cheerio Gardens last week Saturday. This year’s matric dance was themed “golden age of Hollywood”. The venue was dazzled with golden Oscars and dramatic black and vibrant splashes of red. It was however the matrics themselves who stole the show, when dashing handsome young men proudly escorted their exquisite dates down the red carpet, pausing momentarily for the cameras of the local paparazzi. wore a Cinderella-like in a fairytale gown and reflected on the grade’s time at Stanford in her speech. While Head Boy Thato Ramashala wore suave in a silver suit, his speech focused on the future and encouraged his peers to persevere in order to achieve in life. There were a few emotional moments in the Mother-Son and Father-Daughter dances, but the good spirits quickly kicked in again as the Matrics prepared to dance the night away. • It was the annual farewell dance and not yet the proper farewell that will be held towards the end of the year.

sekretaris (mnr Cedric White). Nou toe nou!

By haar is haar man, prof Peter Vale, en die Bulletin se redakteur, Jean Aucamp.

lange bekom/ontwikkel.

Popular GV 4x4 to be held on 11 June Liza Atherstone The Georges Valley Association (GVA) will once again host the highly successful annual Georges Valley 4x4 and “Party of the Year” evening show, with appearing artist Clint Cunninghham: on 11 June at The Hub. This year will mark the thirteenth GVA 4x4. The security and upliftment of the Georges Valley community was a vision and priority of the late Peter McGaffin. With dogged determination, he set about forming the GVA fifteen years ago, much to the scepticism of many other communities! It soon became evident that funding was going to be needed to fulfil this vision, and the Georges Valley 4x4 was born! It soon became a necessity to establish an independent radio network for the valley. GVA have their own repeaters and are totally responsible for the repairs and maintenance thereof. Besides the general channels, each family unit has their own private channel. A safety and security committee comprising of volunteers (young and old) was soon established. This group of dedicated people respond

to security related matters, and are ever -increasingly involved in traffic control and assistance, at the frequent accident scenes on the treacherous Georges Valley route. Several members of GVA have undergone emergency first aid training courses at various levels. Members of GVA SAS are frequently seen assisting at accident scenes and broken down vehicles, directing traffic until the necessary authority arrives. The radio network has proved to be the ‘vital link’ to the immediate community and the community at large. On many occasions, members of the valley have been instrumental in providing vital information to various authorities, in non GVA related matters. The radio network is in direct communication with the Tzaneen Emergency services and the Forest Fire Protection Association, and this very link has been instrumental in saving many lives and help safeguarding the surrounding agricultural areas . Members of GVA have proved invaluable in assisting the surrounding areas during fire season and other emergencies. Invaluable “on the spot” information can be relayed to

the spotter plane and bomber helicopter. Each fire season, members of GVA selflessly give of their time and expertise, not only to their own valley, but to surrounding areas, at their own cost, no matter what time of day or night. Many near disasters have been prevented and severe fire damage definitely minimised. Thanks to the support of the community, GVA has been able to donate funds to organisations and charities that no longer receive government funding. GVA also donates R1 000 monthly to the new Tzaneen Ambulance Service. The GVA continues to make a noticeable difference to the safety and security of its inhabitants and surrounding areas. Join the GVA at The Hub for their 4x4 Family Day and ‘Party of the Year’ and help make a difference! Entrance is free, refreshments available from early till late (06:00 to 23:30). Tickets for the Clint Cunningham Show cost R100, available from the Tzaneen Show Grounds office or Tzaneen Animal Clinic in Peace Street or call Anton on 082 801 4333 or Daleen on 082 899 5800 or Ferris on 082 807 4373. Nottingham is considered to be one of the internationally interactive universities with campuses in China and Malaysia. The project leader, Mr John Ramsey, says although they were faced with delays in the beginning, the project is going well and as planned. “We had a slow start because we had to set up camp and wait for supplies”, explained Ramsey. The nursery is designed for fifty children — from new born to six years old. The objective of the project is to provide the children with formal nursery education, to prepare them for primary education. The project has been running for the past eight weeks. The students originate from the Middle East and the United Kingdom. In order for them to be here they had to raise funds during the summer holiday. They received a warm welcome from the community. The project is an initiative of Education Africa and the Social Architect Programme. The project has environmentally responsible designs, hence a lot of local supplies are being used. The concrete blocks were manufactured in the village and only the roof supply came from outside Limpopo.

A Walk with Jesus

Tzaneen’s problems The Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for Tzaneen is to be praised in one respect — it is brutally honest as to the shortfalls (called “challenges”) which stand in the way of progress. However, in another respect, the document tries to paper over some of these. The Mayor says the IDP is presented “in the backdrop of ten years of excellence and commitment in service delivery”. According to the report, management had asked departments to come forward with plans to save money and would investigate some of the suggestions. One was a moratorium on filling vacant posts. This, clearly, is not a wise option. Virtually all departments report on vacant posts. Even the legal department has insufficient personnel to deal with their workload. A refreshing comment made here is: “Ignorance of legal opinion by management, thus posing a risk to the municipality”. The IDP reports that a total of 195 positions are vacant, including 103 in community services and 100 in engineering services. Even the office of the chief financial officer has 25 vacancies. A comprehensive skills audit undertaken for the human resources department reveals that 21% of all staff are illiterate and that 46% has below grade 9 school level. Training was needed in “functional literacy and basic maintenance skills”. Priority needed to be given to computer skills, interpersonal skills, in-service staff supervision, management skills, project management, and more. We deserve better from our municipality. The Mayor, in his foreword, encourages all interested parties “to read, engage with and provide feedback” on the IDP. In accepting this invitation, we support the following suggestions already put forward by staff: train unproductive staff; forego bonuses; cut down subsistence and travelling expenses; improve credit control and debt collection. To quote the Education and Training Unit, “Integrated Development Planning involves the entire municipality and its citizens in finding the best solutions to achieve good long-term development.” We couldn’t agree more.

gebruik as artikels (nie items nie) in voorraad is. Prominent: Iemand het ‘n prominente neus. Figuurlik is daar beter sinonieme vir byvoorbeeld prominente sakeman, soos vooraanstaande, bekende, gerekende of gesiene.

Luke 24 v 13-35 We have just celebrated Easter, alters were stripped and all was very solemn, because we remember the supreme sacrifice of Christ, dying on a cross for our sins. An unselfish act that He did out of love for us all. He did not only die for us, but for all who believe in Him and for those who will come to believe in Him. What a great God we serve. Unlike other people who have died for their faith, Jesus was resurrected and showed Himself to some of the people, His disciples for instance. In the quoted reading we read of Jesus appearing to two of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, they do not recognize Him. He asks them questions, they are perhaps in a state of shock because they have heard that the tomb in which He was laid is empty. Their eyes have not yet opened to the fact that He is walking with them, He is resurrected. Even after He quotes from the scriptures, they still do not realize that it is Him. Only afterwards at supper when He breaks the bread and gives thanks do they recognize who He is. I wonder how many of us would recognize Jesus if He came alongside us, perhaps we picked up a hitchhiker or He climbed into a taxi. We have not seen Him as the disciples had, yet perhaps we would be more open to receive Him. I feel that the Holy Spirit would open us up to recognize Him as our Lord and Saviour. In no way am I saying that we are any better than the disciples, but I believe that if we are living close to Jesus as we should then it will be easier for us to recognize Him. I think that just His persona would give us a hint that we were with someone far superior to us. What a wonderful thought if this should happen to us. Are we walking with Jesus every day of our lives or do we also “pack’ Him away until the next Holy occasion. Are we prepared to meet our Saviour no matter when He comes or do we wait until we are dying? Love to you all in Christ Jesus.

Some more problems facing the GTM Service delivery in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s area (GTM) is under pressure, accoring to the Integrated Development Plan (IDP). On page 7 is a report indicating how serious the situation is and might be better to read that report first and then to continue reading this report.

Health care: unable to serve

The primary health care function has been devolved to the Limpopo department of health. However the GTM has 29 clinics, four health centres and 165 visiting points, mostly at crèches and on farms. Only sixteen of these have functioning structures and in some cases visiting points are under a tree. The existing staff are unable to service the entire municipal area. In terms of environmental health, problems have arisen from “indiscriminate dumping of household and commercial refuse, and building rubble in Tzaneen, Nkowankowa, Lenyenye and Haenertsburg”. Water quality is affected by “improper location and construction of pit latrines and

septic tanks in environmentally sensitive areas” and“the location of a graveyard in an area with a high water table in Lenyenye”. The report states that poor maintenance of pump stations “may result in the overflow of sewage into water courses”.

Libraries do not benefit

A high level of service is experienced in the GTM libraries where library users number nearly 100 000 and over 120 000 books were lent out. Book-related events are frequently held, displays are mounted, holiday programmes and competitions arranged and assistance given for projects. Funding given to the Limpopo provincial library services does not appear to benefit the Tzaneen library due to lack of communication.

Licensing, land & landfill

Under licensing, it is noted that the main challenge is “corruption at DLTCs” — drivers’ licence testing centres. Challenges facing Land, Property and Human Settlement include availability of land and a “backlog of 13 688 RDP beneficiaries”.

The GTM landfill site is managed by Waste Group Ingwe. The expected life-span extends for another twelve years and the selection of a new site is of “utmost importance”

Information

Alarming shortfalls are noted in the GTM’s information and communication technology. According to an environmental assessment, compliance with best practice and legislation was low; there was no defined ITC strategy; ITC assets were dated; no continuity or disaster recovery in place; overall IT maturity level was “basic”; comparison of IT spend to operating profit was way below industry average; software licensing not up to date; overall ICT risk was high. An ICT master systems plan needs to be developed as a matter of priority. Local Economic Development is hampered by uncoordinated planning and lack of incentives for private sector development. Staff shortages are experienced in the audit section— “with the present staff it is impossible to complete our annual plan no matter how hard we try”.

Service delivery in Tzaneen is under pressure Basic service delivery and infrastructure planning in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality area has been put under the spotlight in the recently published Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for 2011/2012. And it appears that financial restraints and lack of capacity are major stumbling blocks. According to Government guidelines, the IDP “is a super plan for an area that gives an overall framework for development.” It should aim to co-ordinate the work of local government and improve the quality of life for all the people living in an area. It should take into account the existing conditions and problems and resources available for development. The GTM’s IDP is a comprehensive document of nearly four hundred pages which analyses existing conditions within each department, identifies problems and develops strategies to meet these challenges and achieve objectives. In presenting the IDP, outgoing Mayor OJ Mushwana said that the IDP was part of a five-year programme coinciding with the next political terms of office. He said it was aligned to national government service delivery priorities, namely job creation, health, the fight against crime and corruption and rural development. The newly appointed Municipal Manager, Ms Conny Mametja, said that more effort had been put into analysing the current status quo within the municipality “in order to respond correctly to the challenges we face”.

GTM being done in by the MDM The GTM is contracted to provide water and sanitation to the entire Mopani District Municipal (MDM) area which encompasses Giyani, Gravelotte, Phalaborwa and Letsitele. This includes the management, production and distribution of treated water, the operation of boreholes, the collection and

treatment of domestic and industrial effluent, the operation of sanitation systems and infrastructure as well as metering, billing and revenue collection. To fulfil its mandate, the GTM was to receive funds and staff from MDM. But this undertaking has not been honoured which has caused financial strain. The urban water supply capacity is insufficient and infrastructure needs to be upgraded. Electricity supply is insufficient for completed water projects. Water reticulation in rural areas is also insufficient. Although taps have been installed at one rural area (Maribe-thema), the monthly allocation from Lepelle Northern Water is less than a third of the residents’ requirements. The problem is exacerbated by “vandalism and interference… by communities”. On the bright side, the GTM has been awarded a Blue Drop certificate for drinking water quality in Tzaneen and Letsitele.

Buildings can’t be maintained New buildings must comply with national building regulations and some thirty building plans are successfully processed every month. But the plans need to be circulated to various departments for comment. The process could well be speeded up but this requires an electronic system to scan the plans (costs R100 000). The need for this equipment was noted in last year’s IDP. The budget for maintaining and managing all municipal buildings is insufficient for the purpose nor can the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act be satisfied. The shortfall is estimated at 75%. Municipal buildings include the civic centre, libraries, satellite offices in Letsitele, Nkowankowa, Lenyenye and Haenertsburg, maintenance camps, treatment plants, recreation facilities, community halls and public toilets.

Vehicles not properly managed The municipal fleet of 97 vehicles, 31 of which are leased, is being managed and monitored without a fleet management system. There is a serious shortage of personnel, especially artisans and mechanics. Problems include insufficient capital for the replacement of old vehicles (the “honey-sucker” is 27 years old) and the lack of a proper fleet management system

to check driver negligence and abuse. Two sets of new earthmoving equipment was acquired during the year for the re-gravelling of rural roads, including bulldozers, graders, excavators, rollers, tipper trucks, water tankers and back actors. However skilled machine operators and assistants are required for this equipment. With the new machinery, there has been significant progress in grading internal streets and “funeral roads” in rural areas, as well as patching of potholes.

Better roads in hundred years!

The GTM is obliged to manage the 2 300 km of municipal roads (only about 200 km of which are tarred) and to prevent deterioration by conducting periodic maintenance. This poses a problem since “there is no inventory/data base that can accurately profile upgrading and maintenance needs”. There is a lack of information on “the conditions of the pavement, surfacing, drainage structures, signage and other road accessories.” This was also reported in the previous year’s IDP. “Officials are constantly pressurised by politicians and residents to provide fully standard roads, but with current funding levels this dream can only become a reality over the next hundred years.” (!) The current budget for maintenance of rural gravel roads needs to be increased from R4 million to R10 million to cover the backlog, and for tarred roads from R6 million to R8 million. A road management system costing R1,5 million and a road master plan at R5 million are needed for better performance. • Read about three other problem areas on page 6

VW finally joins World Rally Championship Volkswagen has announced that they will be joining the World Rally Championship with the Polo from 2013. “In the past, we celebrated our sporting success in the desert,” VW’s Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg said at the Sardinia launch recently where the first WRC Volkswagen was shown prior to the start of the WRC round that sees Mini making their debut. “Now we will enter the World Rally Championship in 2013 where the new Polo WRC will compete against Citroën, Mini and Ford. There are almost twenty months between now and our first rally and we will find the drivers, but now we must prepare for the task ahead - there is much to be done.” “We will run the car by the end of the year,” VW race boss Kris Nissen explained. “We will start testing the car and run some events with Skoda S2000 to train the team on events and to meet the people. This is a five-year programme, the next two years will be to develop the car and the engine. We will then enter the WRC in 2013, 2014 and 2015.” It was also con-

firmed that Carlos Sainz will remain with VW Motorsport. “I spent some time convincing Carlos to stay in the team, it was the easiest 10 seconds ever! He will be my right hand and involved in many things - not for racing, but for sure we need him for some tests,” Nissen confirmed. Volkswagen will however no longer compete in the Dakar Rally as a works effort, as it confirmed it would be contesting the WRC on the same budget it had previously used for the Dakar campaign. It is likely the Race Touareg 3 will compete in privateer hands next year. The new Polo will join the WRC in 2013 and remain in the championship until at least the end of 2015. Volkswagen has long been

a stalwart in the SA Rally Championship with four cars in it’s factory Polo S2000 team that has won the last five SA titles on the trot. One of the Polos is piloted by SA Dakar legends Giniel de Villiers and Ralph Pitchford. The WRC move will no doubt help the local team, albeit indirectly through WRC experience and technology benefiting the local operation, if VW sees its way to remaining in top level SA rallying while its parent is also competing in the WRC, that is...

New edition to the Opel family Official renderings of the Opel Astra GTC have been released on the internet and it will be quite a looker. The renderings show the final production version of the car, which has kept the sharp styling of the GTC Paris concept. In Europe the order books for the new GTC will open in early June, at which point the pricing and specification will also be confirmed. Earlier in the year renderings of the VXR version were leaked and the standard GTC retains much of the visual impact of the more aggressive XKR version.

The VXR will have nearly 225kW but it will only be launched at the Geneva Show next year. Thankfully we won’t have to wait that long for the GTC, which will be launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The engines will likely be similar to the regular fivedoor sibling, but the chassis will be significantly modified. The modifications will also include the HiPerstrut front suspension from the VXR. There are also rumours that Lotus has also had a hand in the development of the chassis.

Meet the next Mercedes Benz C-class

Mercedes introduced us to its BLS concept shown as the F800 at Geneva last year. It wets the appetite, but will these concepts really roam our streets? Meet the slick next C-class. Although BLS sounds impressive, the name already belongs to Cadillac. Mercedes can’t use it. But it won’t stop them from building a curvacious new model based on the C Class just like the CLS. CLS is a brilliant success. First conceived as the “Pimp’s ride”, it set the pace for BMW and Audi fighting for second place. It looks as if the C is therefore next. Merc’s just launched the facelifted C, which means that the next C and its proposed offshoot will arrive in two to three years time and most

observers are convinced that ‘BLS’ will be based on that slick design. Mercedes’ new design boss Gorden Wagener has spent much of his time at Mercedes’ California Design Studio at Carlsbad where he and advanced design boss Stefan Köhl are working out the brand’s design future and in particular, the style of the successors to the current C, E and S classes. Mercedes’ men of style see sustainability as an integral part of the brand’s design philosophy, but they’re also guided by shapes inspired by nature and are keen to see a move away from edgy, wedged lines. “We want athletic proportions, surfaces and lines”, Köhl explains. “We don’t want to depict pure brute force, but rather stylish

lines - like the CLS,” So expect future Mercedes to keep that long bonnet, but to also feature a flowing silhouette with short front and long rear overhangs and large, flush-fitted wheels. And the next C-class will be the car to usher these changes in. “The 2014 C will exude romanticism, excitement and classic appeal’” Köhl pointed out, hinting at the F800 concept. Interestingly, that concept is supposed to use the same platform for any compatible drivetrain – be that a conventional fossilfuelled machine, a plug-in hybrid or even a fuel cell car – with Merc understood to have cell tech already capable of a 600km range. Traditionalists need not fret – the bulk of the next C-class will continue to offer albeit next generation four-cylinder and V6s with 20% better fuel consumption and emissions, not to mention more power, lighter mass and better performance in an aluminium and composite rich chassis that will weigh considerably less than the outgoing car and it will ride on S-class like rear-wheel drive mechanicals incorporating a new four-link front axle and air suspension for that big Merc magic carpet ride.

Next C will also boast an interesting departure inside the car. “Car cabins play an increasingly important role,” Köhl elaborates. “They are becoming understood as a living space and interior design must address such future mobility needs.” To that end, interiors will continue to utilise materials synonymous with Mercedes quality and style, but their application and method will change to suit future driving needs. Another novelty is magic sky control to adjust levels of sunlight allowed through the glass roof. The cabin will be focused around a COMAND touch screen monitor to run all aspects of the car via a next generation rotary control and touchpad in the centre console. Next C will feature S-class levels of driver assistance and safety with the likes of an ESP program allied to active blind spot and lane assistant functions capable of overriding the driver in extremely dangerous situations, while active parking assist will enable C to park itself. But most significantly, don’t hold your breath for the so-called BLS – rather put your name down for a 2014 C-class – it’s pretty much the same thing!

Audi steps it up a gear with new models Spy pictures of the Audi’s upcoming 2012 S7 Sportback have been spotted on the internet. Some details have also surfaced about the car and the numbers sure do look good. The test mule has been sighted sporting an RS-style front bumper, making it look really quite aggressive. Naturally the car will have its suspension retuned to be a lot sportier than the standard car. It will also have a high-performance braking system and a four-tailpipe exhaust system that should emit a glorious noise. Under the bonnet the news gets even better. Power will likely come from a turbocharged four-litre V8 engine that will probably produce more than 320kW. The really exciting news is the suggestion that an RS7 could be on the way, with a lot more power. How much exactly? Well speculation suggests that it could have around 447kW. It looks like Audi could reveal the S7 at the Frankfurt Motor show later on this year. Audi is reportedly also considering pro-

ducing a convertible version of its Q5. The Cross Cabriolet concept may not make too much sense, but that is not stopping Audi considering it for limited production. Details are still scarce at the moment but what is known is that should it get the green light, it will retain the concepts two-door layout and canvas roof. It would also have a bespoke interior to help justify the price tag, which is expected to be in the region of R455 000 plus tax. If it does go into production, Audi is likely to make just 5000 units and would go on sale in late 2012 or early 2013. One thing is certain it does look pretty good, so you can be sure it will sell fast. The Audi R8 is a fantastic supercar. It looks good, is great to drive and is easy enough to use everyday should you decide to do so. Now Audi has announced that the hardcore version of the R8 will be coming to South Africa. Only 333 R8 GT’s were made for the entire world and SA has been allocated just seven models. If you are interested, you are too late, because they have all been bought already. Cross Cabriolet It has an asking

S7 Sportback price of R2 620 000, which means in terms of price it fits between the 911 Turbo S and the 911 GT2 RS. So what do you get for your money? Well for starters the GT is lighter and more powerful than the standard V10 version. That means it is faster and already it is looking like it’s worth the extra investment. The 5.2-litre V10 engine now pushes out 412kW, up from the standard cars 386kW, and the overall weight has been reduced

by 100kg. With the extra power and lower weight the R8 GT can get from 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 320km/h. Audi’s R-Tronic flappy paddle gearbox is mated to the engine and features a launch control system for the quickest start possible. Naturally it still features Audi’s Quattro allwheel-drive system, which sends the majority of the power to the back. It really is a pity that all of these have been sold, I wouldn’t mind one in my garage…

5 2 Years M3

a model abbreviation that stands for 25 years of sheer driving pleasure. The sportiest BMW 3 Series is celebrating its 25th birthday and we celebrate all four versions of the iconic M3.

speed 230 km/h. Developed by BMW engine pope Paul Rosche, the fourvalve engine has 2.3 liters of displacement and greater performance potential than the small cylinders of the M20 series. It descended from the M10 block, which in the 80s is also used in Formula 1 racing.

BMW M3 E30 | Date of Birth: 1985

BMW M3 E36 | Date of Birth: 1992

The first M3 was based on the 3 series E30 and met with its edgy design, wide skirts and rear spoiler in the bold spirit of the ‘80s. Its roots lay in motorsport: after stopping production of the M1 in 1981, BMW M GmbH, was responsible for the deve-lopment of a vehicle for the series production touring cars in group A. Vital statistics: four cylinders, 16 valves, 200 hp (195 hp with Cat), 1200 pounds empty weight, sprint to 100 in 6.9 seconds,

BMW offered the top model as a two-door coupe, fourdoor sedan and a convertible. The M3 E36 was visually the most understated M3. as it didn’t come with a lot of spoilers and wings. (Compared to the first M3, I guess - but that’s what made it so appealing) It was however seethingly violent under

the hood: the first six to perform service in an M3 - and what an engine! With 286 hp and 320 Nm of torque, the E36 was a serious competitor for the fast competition from Stuttgart and Zuffenhausen. In addition to the Vanos variable camshaft control and individual throttle butterflies, newly developed engine electronics provided the necessary horsepower potential. The E36 was significantly more expensive than its predecessor.

BMW M3 E46 | Date of Birth: 2000 The predecessor: in 2000, BMW lets the M3 series E46 off the leash. For the standard sprint, the coupe needs only 5.2 seconds. Means to an end is a 3.2-liter inline six with 343 hp. The engine has a high revving nature - up to 8000 rpm. The

sound it produces is magical: wonderfully throaty at low speeds, increasing this to a banshee scream on approach to the rev limit. (This may well be the most remarkable sounds known to man!) The throttle response is reminiscent of a thoroughbred racing engine.

BMW M3 E92 | Date of Birth: 2006

The 4 Litre V8 provides fire under the hood. The high revving engine achieves 420 hp, propelling the coupe in 4.8 seconds from 0 - 100 kph and reaches an electronically limited topspeed of 250 km/h. The Eight revs up to 8400 rpm - the highest revving series engine BMW has built to date. Double-Vanos and electronically controlled single throttle body ensure optimal performance management, but also keeps fuel consumption in check: 12.4 liters/100km (six-speed manual transmission) average according to BMW.

Volkswagen’s GTI celebrates 35 years This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Volkswagen Golf GTI and in order to mark the occasion, VW has launched a special edition of the GTI, called the Edition 35. It differs from the regular GTI by having a more powerful engine, as well as subtle styling tweaks. It still has a two-litre turbocharged TSI engine under its bonnet, but power is up from 155kW to 173kW. This should improve the cars performance yet for now we can only guess what the improvement will be, as VW has not released any official figures. Styling changes will include new, bespoke alloy wheels, blacked-out headlights and taillights and a

Chev gets into SA’s popular bakkie scene Chevrolet has revealed its all-new Colorado ‘midsize pickup truck’ in Bangkok, which in SA means there’s an all-new real Chevrolet bakkie coming soon to take on the likes of Hilux, Amarok, Navara, Triton and Ranger/ BT50. Where that exactly leaves GM’s Isuzu in the SA market remains to be seen. Set for its public debut at the Thai auto show next week, Colorado is said to be very close to the production model set to be built in Thailand. Whatever happens however, Isuzu will not be left out of the equation - the GM affiliate will build the Chevrolet on its next KB platform and like its local Ford and Mazda rivals, both versions could be sold in some markets. To be shown at Bangkok in cab-and-a-half incarnation with suicide rear-opening doors, considering it’s Isuzu base it isn’t too difficult to tell that there will also be double and single cabs, two and four-wheel drive and a variety of engine choices when Colorade finally arrives. The concept rides on 20-inch wheels with 285/50R20 off-road tyres and is powered by a modern 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel. Expect the street legal Colorado to make an appearance later this year.

glossy black finish on the car’s grille. Other changes will include LED daytime running lights and the front fenders decorated with special 35 plates. The interior will receive a make over as well. The 35 Edition logo will be present on the doorsills, seats while the fabric upholstery on the seats will have a honeycomb pattern. The order books have already been opened for the 35 Edition in Germany with the first deliveries expected to start in June. VW will officially launch the car at the famous Worthersee GTI meet at the beginning of June, where more details will be announced. This week’s fitness tip Ettienne van Wyngaardt (Fitness specialist)

Drinking alcohol while pregnant is not a good idea as it circulates in your blood stream, which is then passed on to your baby via the umbilical cord. Alcohol can slow down the baby’s growth, affect its brain and cause birth defects. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is a range of afflictions that can occur in a person whose mother drank alcohol during

pregnancy. Some people with FASD have abnormal facial features, growth and central nervous system problems. People with FASD may also have problems with learning, memory, attention span, communication, vision and hearing. So rather stay away from alcohol, it can affect your baby for the rest of his/her life.

Weekend packed with Magoebaskloof Challenge

The Magoebaskloof Challenge, one of the oldest and best known cycling races in Limpopo, will be hosted by the Tzaneen Cycling Club this weekend. Thanks to the new main sponsor, Fairview Hotel, the race is now called the Fairview Hotel Magoebaskloof Road and Mountain Bike Challenge. The Tzaneen area is known as a true mecca for mountain bike racing and due to popular demand, the Magoebaskloof Challenge now also includes a MTB race. The road race will be held tomorrow and the MTB race on Sunday. Due to road works in the area the route for 2011 has been slightly altered. The Fairview Hotel will be the starting and finishing point for the road race. The MTB race will start and finish at Merensky High School. The road race consists of a 70 km and 45 km route. A fun-ride for the kids will also be held. The MTB race consists of a 40 km and 20 km route. The 40 km route has something for everyone — great climbs and down hills, single-track and jeep track, winding through the plantations around the Magoebaskloof Dam. Plenty of food and drink will be on sale. Loads of good prizes as well as lucky draws make this a challenge not to be missed. The Fairview Hotel Magoebaskloof Road and MTB Challenge is the only race presented by the Tzaneen Cycling Club and promises to be of the highest standard. Racing starts at 08:00 on both days. For on-line entries go to www.cyclelab.com or contact Piet Roode on 082 457 0570.
