Zero tolerance for this Easter, warns General The Easter weekend will be painful for the criminals in and around Tzaneen and a peaceful one for the citizens of Tzaneen. So says Genl Maggie Mathebula, the officer commanding the Tzaneen Police Sector. According to Mathebula a command was issued by Limpopo’s Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Simon Mpembe, to ensure a zero tolerance towards criminals during Easter. “We are going to make it hard for the criminals to commit any form of crime,” Mathebula said. In the past few months Tzaneen’s crime rate has been high, especially when it comes to housebreaking in certain sectors of the community. Lt Col Shikwambana, the spokesperson for the Tzaneen Police station, added that from today (Thursday) there will be regular roadblocks on major roads around Tzaneen. The police will patrol to ensure that people obey the laws and they will have stop and search operations to arrest those with drugs. “We are going to tighten the belt in Bolubedu-South to arrest those who are drinking and driving,” he warned. — Martina Jege

Dispute gets ugly Traffic island on the R71

The peculiar “decision” to erect a traffic island on the R1 right in front of the Sasol filling station took a new turn this week, when

Is it Yes or No?

a contractor started to mark out the island on Monday morning — while the construction team stood waiting in the wings.

However, when the owners of he filling station threatened to get an urgent court interdict, the work was stopped. • See page 3

We intended wishing you a whale of a time over the long weekend, but then the elephant in this unique series of photos made us think twice about the saying! The photos were taken in Mocambique and sent to us by Johan & Annatjie Swanepoel (johanletaba@gmail.com). We thank them for sharing this with our readers. The people from the Valley of the Eliphant (the Mopani District) have a special bond with these gentle giants of the Bushveld. Eliphants are good swimmers, but it is rare to see an eliphant swimming in the sea — and doing so quite far into the ocean, behind the breakers! Be this as it may, we still hope you will enjoy a whale of a time this weekend.

Sê jou sê

Soek Laeveld Bulletin Daar is skielik ‘n aantal nuwe spoedbulte in Tzaneen se strate. Sê jou sê. Suddenly a few new speed humps made their appearance in Tzaneen. Have your say here. TrapSpotter Tzaneen The one at Edupark caused an accident on Saturday evening. There were no lines. It‘s a good thing as long as it is visible and the warning signs are far enough so that one can slow down. Voertuie het groot skade so opgedoen! My vraag is net hoeveel slaggate kon reggemaak word met daai geld. Sorry, we can not assit you, no money to fix roads. Barry du Toit Dit is seker nodig.

Let wel: Hulle sê nie so nie!

Of hoe, Rog7? ...

We’re going to clean up Tzaneen, warns new Police chief

New twist in R71 traffic island dispute The dispute ridden Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre development scored yet another problem this week: a traffic island on the R71, slapbang in front of the Sasol R71. The alleged destruction of a wetland, the wall that collapsed and took part of a neighbour’s property, the dumping of tons of excavated material from the site onto land in Georges Valley (this one hasn’t really hit the headlines, not yet) and storm water from the site allegedly causing problems in the “spruit” behind the Sasol filling station have caused the development to be rather controversial. The planned traffic island has caused the latest controversy. The island will effect motorists and the Sasol filling station since ac-

cess will be left in and left out only. Our information is that it was agreed that the island will not be constructed before the Easter weekend, especially since the new Total filling station across the road will only open some time after Easter. When workers started marking out the island on Monday, the owners of the Sasol filling station had to threaten with a court interdict to stop them. A rather interesting new twist to this drama is that Sanral (the SA National Roads Agency) — who manage and administer all national roads — deny having any knowledge of the island and claim not to have given permission for an island to be constructed.

Mayor gives on his birthday, rather than to receive The Greater Letaba Municipality Mayor, Mr City Modjadji, celebrated his birthday by putting a smile on the faces of people living at Vutlhari Hospice and Disability Center. He spent the time with the children and the elderly, giving the children toys to play with and the senior citizens blankets to beat the cold that will be coming soon. The centre is home to 34 people, old and young with different disabilities. Mr Baloyi Pheko, the manager of the centre, said the situation at the centre is

bad and some days the people go for a day without food. “It is sad because most of our patients live on medication and when they have nothing to eat the medication has a bad effect on them. We sometimes have no water to bath them

and cook for them so it becomes a challenge”, said Baloyi. The mayor was very touched by the situation in the centre and he promptly donated R5 000 worth of groceries. He indicated that some challenges may be the result of

bad communication between the centre and the office of the mayor. He encouraged the management to approach business people to get food donations and other means of survival. Photo & report: Martina Jege

Early Monday morning these workers started marking out where the traffic island was to be constructed. It caused havoc and peak hour traffic was disrupted, but it didn’t last for long. Late morning they stopped working and removed the traffic cones and other marking materials.

The new station commander of the Tzaneen Police is planning to remove criminals from the streets. Brig Diana Mashele, the new force behind the Tzaneen police, gained experience as a station commander in Giyani, Malamulele and Polokwane, where she made major changes in cleaning up the streets of Polokwane. Her plans for Tzaneen are to focus on crime prevention and to combat drug trafficking. Many suspects have already been arrested. She added that most of the suspects’ caught with drugs are not

from South Africa. On how she would prevent corruption in the SAPS, Mashele said they have an anti-corruption plan that will assist to identify corrupt elements within the station and it is already working. She added that when it comes to community members who are messing up the town’s river banks, the GTM and the police should work together. “We need to work together to carry out the by-laws.” There is also Business against Crime, where businesses raise problems they are facing, such as the abuse of shop trol-

leys around town. “I have also noticed the number of prostitutes in Tzaneen and we are going to arrest them until they leave Tzaneen,” she warned. She added that the control over fire arms in the Tzaneen police is controlled and monitored non-stop, in accordance with the law. — Martina Jege

How police caught men with 230 stolen cell phones The sharp eyes of police officers in Tzaneen were just too sharp for two cell-phone thieves and early Monday morning two suspicious individuals were cornered; and a bag with 230 stolen cell-phones was discovered. The cell phones were of different brands and 180 cellphone batteries and a plug-in keyboard were also found. According to Tzaneen police spokesperson, Lt Col Simon Shikwambana, police officers saw a suspicious man walking down the stairs at the Spar super store carrying a bag. The man went into the Sapekoe Drive-tunnel and when he got out, he was wearing a dif-

ferent jacket and he did not have the bag. He said that he was from Mpumalanga, but later on he said he was from Gauteng. The police asked him to show them were he had hid the bag. He then admitted that he was with another man and the second suspect was also apprehended. Both men had bleeding

cuts on their hands. It is alleged that they broke into Jet Stores in Danie Joubert Street, entering through the building’s roof. “They are charged with pos-session of stolen property and housebreaking,” he said. Numerous attempts to get comment from Jet Stores failed. – Martina Jege

Collapsed land reform projects should be investigated

So sê Limpopo se polisiekommissaris, lt-gen Simon Mpembe.

Oops! The Watch Dog from Tzaneen writes by e-mail: The total lack of knowledge in the Engineering Department of the GTM is evident in the ad hock manner they are erecting speed humps around town. One can only assume that the purpose of the speed humps is to act as traffic calming devices. The GTM opted to make use of speed humps whereas strategically placed stop signs could have been far more effective and much less expensive.

Letters • Briewe Furthermore, some of these speed humps are very dangerous even at the recommended speed limit of 30 km/h and will cause accidents in stead of their original purpose to make our roads safer. One can only imagine the legal implications and possible claims the GTM will have to face if a serious accident

We are a fearful nation. We fear for our safety, we fear that we do not have enough food or money and most important we fear death. Is this because we do not have enough faith? Faith in our government to see to it that our Constitutional Rights are protected, fear that we do not trust our own capabilities and the faith that God gave us these talents? I would like to talk about the fear of death. Why do we fear death? Is it because we have seen the suffering of others or that perhaps, we are not prepared for it? Violent death is not pleasant and I do not wish it upon anyone. Then again, what about those who commit these crimes? If we are in a relationship with God we should not have any fear of death, or natural bodies decay and breakdown but if our belief in Jesus is strong, we need not fear death as it is natural. We believers know that we have eternal life and once we pass through this life we will pass into another life that is going to be wonderful. One where there is no pain or suffering, one where there is eternal joy. But then our relationship with Jesus must be right. We must believe and trust in Him. So let us not fear death but be joyful and rejoice that as we pass away we will enter a time of peace. Blessings

is caused by one of these obstruction in our streets. As can be seen in the latest advertisements for departmental directors, these wasteful practices are implemented by officials earning R 920 000.00 per year. Our very enthusiastic MM at the time of her appointment also forgot about her broken window policy” as can be seen in the failure to repair the fountain in front of the GTM offices. To conclude, one can only assume that the GTM will be following in the footsteps of the GLM where service delivery is non existent.

— LiN Nuus/Die Pos

Letsoalos’ graves desecrated at Adams Farm The development of Adams Farm as a residential township has now culminated in graves being desecrated. The Greater Tzaneen Municipality, current owners and developers of the land, invited the media to the site to view graves that were accidently dug up. According to one of the documents in the Bulletin’s possession, addressed to the ‘Town Manager’ of Tzaneen and dated 19 October 2009, the GTM was notified that there were graves in the area and that they are protected under the National Heritage Resources Act. The other document was a complaint lodged by the Banareng Ba Letsoalo Tribe about damage to their forefathers’ graves on Adams Farm. The document, which was stamped by the Mayor’s Office, is dated 16 ABOVE: Mr Malan Letsoalo points at parts of a January 2012.03.28. human skeleton that have been opened up durAccording to Mr Thulani Twala, the GTM’s ing excavations. BELOW pieces of material can spokesperson, the municipality was not be seen, claimed to be from a grave. aware of the graves and would not have invited the media to the scene if they were. They also approached a local radio station and invited the public who had family graves on Adams Farm to come and identify the graves, but there was no response. The graves are said to be those of the Letsoalos’ forefathers, who were workers on the farm. According to Mr Malan Letsoalo, whose mother’s grave has been desecrated, he warned the GTM about the graves and they said they would look into it. However, when he visited the land he found his mother’s grave “damaged”. He added that the GTM did not even bother to apologise for “damaging” the graves. — Martina Jege

Father beats his 3 year-old child — she may never fully recover

Photos supplied by SAPS

A man from Mopye, Bolubedu South, is accused of beating-up his three yearold girl so badly, that she may never fully recover from some of her injuries. Police arrested the 40 year-old man after a complaint from a teacher at a daycare centre that she attended. According to Tzaneen Police spokesman, Lt Col Simon Shikwambana, the father took the child to the centre and told the teachers that he would fetch her later on. He asked them not to allow anybody to be

with the child. The teacher noiticed that the young girl had bruises and a badly swollen face. She then notified the police and the child was rushed to a hospital. The man’s reason for beating the child is not yet known and the police are investigating the incident. The child’s mother works in Gauteng and she left the child with the father. The man appeared in court on Friday and was granted bail of R700. He will again appear in court on 26 April 2012. — Martina Jege

This week’s fitness tip by Ettienne van Wyngaardt (Fitness specialist) Make sure to cut as many sugars as possible in your diet. The moment you eat food with sugars, it gives you a sugar high (energy boost) for a while, but afterwards your body starts to crave for more sugars, and that’s where most people get addicted to sugar without even realising it. And don’t be fooled by low fat foods. Always look at the sugar content of the food, and then you will see that even if it contains no fat, it contains a lot of sugars, i.e. Jelly Babies. And all it does is spike your sugar level. Also make sure to look at the sodium content in any food. Be careful of too many sugars and sodium.

Dit was by tye baie koud.
