David joined Rotary in 2007, elected to the Rotary club of London Board in 2011, and became Vice President in 2012-2013. David formed a 100th anniversary committee May 2012 to prepare for the club's 100th Anniversary in 2015.

TVCC was created from a need in the community by the Rotary Club of London in 1949 and today has expanded to many locations in communities throughout the district.

David’s previous involvements include Past President of London & Crime Stoppers, Past President and Treasurer of Acorn Christian Daycare, Past Director South Western Ontario Insurance Institute, Elder and Past Chair Personnel committee at Oakridge Presbyterian Church.

David and Susan have three children, Justin, Adam and Brittany. They have three grandsons Liam, Jack and Bradley whom they enjoy spoiling!

Rotary youth exchange — one of the many programs for youths and young adults that we celebrate this month — was my path into true engagement in Rotary. My wife, Susanne, and I began hosting exchange students soon after I joined, and the experience helped me go from simply being a member of my Rotary club to being a true Rotarian. Now Rotary Youth Exchange is a family tradition, and a strong one: Over the past 24 years, we have hosted 43 students!

From the start, we loved it so much that, in addition to hosting students in our home, we became involved with the program by helping to organize student summer camps. During one such camp, I met Christine Lichtin, who was a German high school student at the time and whose father is a past president of my Rotary club. To try something new during this year of embracing change, I am turning this space, normally reserved for the president of Rotary, over to Christine so she can share her story.

My first contact with Rotaract was about 13 years ago, when I was with Susanne and Holger at a barbecue for the summer youth camp. Holger turned to me and said: "Why don't you visit a Rotaract club? You'll meet a lot of great young people who come together to have fun and to make a difference."

A few years later, when I was at Trier University, his words came back to me and I decided to give it a try. That was more than eight years ago, and I'm still at it. Once you are in Rotaract, you just don't want to get out.

Rotaract has accompanied me everywhere, starting with the Trier club and then on to a club in Bologna, Italy, during the year I studied there. When I was in Kiel for my master's degree, I got involved with Rotaract there before landing at the Rotaract Club of Hamburg-Alstertal as I began my career. Each of those clubs has its own identity and focus, but all have the same intrinsic motivation.

I am now taking on a senior advisory role in my Rotaract club, which I really enjoy. I carry Rotaract in my heart, and it shapes my values, even as my interests evolve. One day, as if she had sensed this evolution, Susanne knocked on my door, wanting to introduce me to a young, modern Rotary club located between Hamburg and Mölln, my hometown. The E-Club of Hamburg-Connect, which Susanne helped charter, holds emeetings, all of them very relaxed and personal. With members of different ages, everything just seemed to fit, so I thought, why not try it out? After all, time is precious and should be filled with fun whenever possible; the rest happens by itself.

Now I am in both worlds — a proud member of Rotaract and a Rotarian. And my small personal goal is to build a bridge between these two parallel worlds. All of us have very similar reasons for being part of the Rotary family.

It took some persistence to persuade Christine to become a member of Rotary, but it was well worth the effort.

It is our duty to put in this kind of effort with youth program participants and Rotaractors so we can keep them in the family of Rotary. I hope you were inspired by her story. It's up to each of us to ensure that more young people like Christine can experience the many ways Rotary Opens Opportunities for us and for the people we serve.

Looking ahead within Rotary International Jennifer E. Jones to become RI president for 2022-23 Jennifer E. Jones, a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada, has been nominated to become Rotary International’s president for 2022-23, a groundbreaking selection that will make her the first woman to hold that office in the organization’s 115-year history.

Jones will officially become president-nominee on 1 October if no other candidates challenge her.

Jones says she sees Rotary’s Action Plan as a catalyst for increasing Rotary’s impact.

“As we reflect upon our new strategic priorities, we could have never envisioned that our ability to adapt would become our North Star during what is inarguably the most profound time in recent history,” Jones said in her vision statement. “Silver linings rise out of the most challenging circumstances. Using metric-driven goals, I will harness this historic landscape to innovate, educate, and communicate opportunities that reflect today’s reality.”

As the first woman to be nominated to be president, Jones understands how important it is to follow through on Rotary’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Statement. “I believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion … begins at the top and for us to realize growth in female membership and members under the age of forty — these demographics need to see their own reflection in leadership,” Jones said. “I will champion double-digit growth in both categories while never losing sight of our entire family.”

Jones is founder and president of Media Street Productions Inc., an award-winning media company in Windsor. She was chair of the board of governors of the University of Windsor and chair of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce. She has been recognized for her service with the YMCA Peace Medallion, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and Wayne State University’s Peacemaker of the Year Award, a first for a Canadian. Jones holds a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.).

A current Rotary Foundation trustee, Jones has been a Rotary member since 1997 and has served Rotary as RI vice president, director, training leader, committee chair, moderator, and district governor. She played a lead role in Rotary’s rebranding effort by serving as chair of the Strengthening Rotary’s Advisory Group. She is the co-chair of the End Polio Now Countdown to History Campaign Committee, which aims to raise $150 million for polio eradication efforts.

Jones recently led the successful #RotaryResponds telethon, which raised critical funds for COVID-19 relief and was viewed by more than 65,000. Jones has also received Rotary International’s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service. She and her husband, Nick Krayacich, are members of The Rotary Foundation’s Arch Klumph Society, Paul Harris Society, and the Bequest Society.

African Region declared Wild Polio Virus Free

N

obody will ever know the identity of the thousands of African children who were not killed or

paralyzed by polio this year. They would have been hard to keep track of no matter what because in ordinary times, they would have followed thousands last year and thousands the year before and on back in a generations-long trail of suffering and death.

Instead, no African children were claimed by polio this year or last year or the year before. It was in 2016 that the last case of wild, circulating polio was reported in Nigeria —the final country on the 54nation African continent where the disease was endemic. And with a required multi-year waiting period now having passed with no more cases, the World Health Organization today officially declared the entirety of Africa polio-free.

A disease that as recently as the late 1980s was endemic in 125 co untries, claiming 350,000 children per year, has now been run to ground in just two remaining places, Pakistan and Afghanistan, where there have been a collective 102 cases so far in 2020. That’s 102 too many, but there is no denying the scope of the WHO announcement.

“Today’s victory over the wild poliovirus in the African region is a testament to what can happen when partners from a variety of sectors join forces to accomplish a major global health goal,” says John Hewko, general secretary and CEO of Rotary International. “[It is] something the world can and should aspire to during these turbulent times.”

It was Rotary, an international nonprofit service organization, that kicked off the polio endgame in 1988 with the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). That program aimed to leverage the power of Rotary’s 35,000 clubs and 1.22 million members in 200 countries and territories worldwide to make polio only the second human disease—after smallpox—to be pushed over the brink of extinction.

The job was made easier by the partners Rotary immediately attracted: the WHO, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and UNICEF. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation joined in 2007, followed by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, just last year. The 32-year initiative has depended on volunteer workers and charitable donations, which together have produced an army of 20 million field workers administering vaccines to over 2.5 billion children at a cost of $17 billion.

Some countries were a lighter lift than others. In the U.S. the disease was eradicated in 1979, well before the GPEI even began its work. Other nations followed: In 1994 the Americas wer e declared polio-free. Europe as a whole got a clean bill of health in 2002, when all 53 countries in the WHO’s

designated European region were declared free of the virus. Massive vaccination efforts began in India in 1997, which eradicated the virus in 2014.

H OW P OLIO W AS E RADICATED FROM THE AFRICAN C ONTINENT But Africa, with its vast sprawl of village populations, long distances to urban hospitals, spotty infrastructure like adequate roads and reliable “cold chains”—refrigerated transport networks to keep vaccines viable—was always going to present special challenges.

In 1996, when the case count on the continent regularly reached 75,000 victims every year, South African President Nelson Mandela partnered with Rotary to launch the “Kick Polio Out of Africa ” Campaign, and the group scrambled fast—or as fast as was possible with so many children to vaccinate on so vast a land mass.

In 2000, the first synchronized campaigns began in 17 countries, with 76 million children being vaccinated by tens of thousands of volunteers. The work fanned out across the continent from there, including an especially heavy push from 2008 to 2010, when an outbreak in 24 countries in western and central Africa was met by a large-scale, multi-national vaccination of 85 million children.

Finally, Nigeria stood alone as the only African nation where the disease was still endemic, in part because of resistance by religious leaders in the northern part of the country who objected western interference in local affairs and claimed that the vaccine was unsafe.

That opposition broke down, partly thanks to Muhammad Sanusi II, the Emir of the city of Kano —a hereditary leader descended from a ruling family—who appeared at a public ceremony before the kick off of a seasonal vaccination campaign in 2016, called for a vial of polio vaccine to be brought to the stage, and with the audience watching, broke its seal and drank down its entire contents. That year, the country recorded its last case of polio, and this year, Nigeria’s WHO certification is the r eward for its efforts.

“The polio eradication program in Nigeria has gone through some difficult times, but I never once doubted that this day would come,” says Dr. Tunji Funsho, a former cardiologist who is the chair of Rotary International’s Polio-Plus Committee in Nigeria. “Any time that we’ve experienced a setback, Rotary and our partners have been able to find solutions and develop new strategies for reaching vulnerable children.”

A message from RI President & TRF Chair AFRICAN REGION CERTIFIED WILD POLIO-FREE It our pleasure to announce to you that the African region has just been certified wild poliovirus-free.

Rotary members have played an invaluable role in the effort to rid the African region of wild polio. We should be proud of all the hard work that we’ve done to eliminate the wild poliovirus throughout Africa and in nearly every country in the world.

This progress is the result of a decades-long effort across the 47 countries of the African region. It has involved millions of health workers traveling by foot, boat, bike and bus, innovative strategies to vaccinate children amid conflict and insecurity, and a huge disease surveillance network to test cases of paralysis and check sewage for the virus.

Over the last two decades, countless Rotary members in countries across the African region and around the world have worked together to raise funds, immunize children, advocate with local and national leaders, and raise awareness about the importance of vaccination, enabling the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to effectively respond to and stop polio outbreaks.

This milestone is an incredible public health achievement for Rotary members, the African region, and our GPEI partners, and a huge step forward on the road to global polio eradication. But we still have important work to do in order to eradicate wild polio in the last two endemic countries.

We have faced many challenges in our journey to eradicate polio. But we’ve made remarkable progress, and the polio infrastructure that Rotarians helped build will serve as a lasting legacy that will continue to help protect vulnerable children against other diseases for decades to come.

We are calling on you today to recommit yourselves to ending polio. We need each and every one of you to help finish this fight and continue raising $50 million each year for PolioPlus. The eradication of wild polio in the African region shows us that polio eradication is achievable, and shows how our hard work, partnerships and financial commitment continue to propel us forward, even during a global pandemic.

Thank you for your continued efforts, for achieving a wild polio-free African region, and for remaining committed to fulfilling our promise of a polio-free world.

The vaccination campaign in Nigeria involved a huge effort to reach remote and dangerous places under threat from militant violence and some health workers were killed in the process.

WHAT IS POLIO AND HAS IT NOW BEEN ERADICATED IN AFRICA? Polio is a virus which spreads from person to person, usually through contaminated water. It can lead to paralysis by attacking the nervous system.

Two out of three strains of wild polio virus have been eradicated worldwide. On Tuesday, Africa has been declared free of the last remaining strain of wild poliovirus.

More than 95% of Africa's population has now been immunised. This was one of the conditions that the Africa Regional Certification Commission set before declaring the continent free from wild polio.

Nigeria is the last African country to be declared free from wild polio, having accounted for more than half of all global cases less than a decade ago.

Africa has been declared free from wild polio by the independent body, the Africa Regional Certification Commission.

Polio usually affects children under five, sometimes leading to irreversible paralysis. Death can occur when breathing muscles are affected.

Twenty-five years ago thousands of children in Africa were paralysed by the virus. The disease is now only found in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

There is no cure, but the polio vaccine protects children for life.

Now only the vaccine-derived polio virus remains in Africa with 177 cases being identified this year.

This is a rare form of the virus that mutates from the oral polio vaccine and can then spread to under-immunized communities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified a number of these cases in Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic and Angola.

Doing Good in the World is something that may need some discussion when it comes to Public Image.

TRF is merely a tax accounting and administrative arm of Rotary International and our Rotary member/club activities provide the Service Above Self to humanity.

Rotary members Do good things in the world through the financial tool, stewardship, and programs of our TRF. So why do we promote TRF doing it rather than Rotarians and Clubs receiving the credit for all these great deeds?

Why do we cloud public awareness with TRF logos, commentary, and promotion of TRF being responsible, when it is really Rotary members and clubs who execute these humanitarian achievements? Rotarians do both the service work and fundraising to finance the projects.

Yes, our TRF staff and Trustees do great work raising and managing our funds, but isn’t TRF mainly a legal and accounting function to satisfy tax and government requirements? The make-a-difference service projects are actually accomplished by our members.

Maybe our Public Image efforts need to have a clearer, more personalized focus on promoting Rotary members and clubs doing the service projects, with an invitation for others to join us.

Let’s tell our Rotary story. As a poor man once said, “Rotary is here. Something good is going to happen.”

Who is Doug Vincent? Doug is a Charter Member and Past President of the Woodstock-Oxford Rotary Club (Canada), with 31 years perfect attendance. As a third-generation graduate of his family's successful farm equipment business, he is now an international advisor to family business corporations, with a focus on harmony and communications in the family business.

Doug has been very involved in Rotary Foundation programs at all levels. He is a Benefactor, Major Donor, multiple Paul Harris Fellow and has received several Leadership and Appreciation Awards for his work, including an R.I. President's Citation, District and Zone Service Awards, Four Avenues of Service Citation and RI's prestigious Service Above Self award. Most recently he was recognized as a distinguished Canadian with a special Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal.

DISTRICT 6330 MEMBERSHIP EXCHANGE MEETING AUGUST 31 at noon Guest Speaker – PRIP Barry Rassin Past President Barry spoke about the devastation on the island of Abaco in the Bahamas by Hurricane Dorian one year ago on September 1, 2019. Rotarians have come together to save the island population and try to rebuild as much as possible. The work is ongoing a year later. Much of the island remains without power.

This was an enlightening, moving, and very interesting presentation by our Past Rotary International President who lives on the island of Nassau in the Bahamas.

The online webinar was hosted by our District Governor, David Elliott and his wife, Sue.

Among the other speakers were Don Moore about Rotary Student Exchange, greetings from Rotary Foundation Trustee Brenda Cressey, and an exciting presentation by a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Port Elgin who ran a fundraiser supporting local business and raising funds.

If you were able to attend, you spent a very worthwhile noon hour!

When someone asks you What is a Passport Club?

The District 6330 Passport Club is a new format of Rotary Club; one where the structure better suits the lives of those who maybe can’t meet on a weekly basis or make significant financial contributions but who still have a passion for what Rotary does best; doing good.

To facilitate this, the 6330 Passport Club conducts business electronically and offers several in-person opportunities per year. In lieu of weekly meetings, members are encouraged to engage in humanitarian service, however that works best for them!

The founding principle is simple: Make Rotary fit your life!

The Rotary District 6330 Passport Club members are full Rotary members, with the same privileges and rights as Rotarians who are members of traditional clubs.

A message from Rotarian Kurtis Lush (Virtual Book Club) Looking for a new way to get your nose stuck into a book?

The 6330 Rotary Passport club, to celebrate Rotary's month of basic education and literacy, is hosting a virtual book club for the month of September!

In collaboration with Shelterbox Canada, readers will have a month to complete Shelterbox's recommended book of the month, which focuses on countries where Shelterbox does its valuable work. All readers, whether reading their first book of the year or having lost count, are invited!

This month we'll be following the story of Syrian refugee Abu Bakr Al Rabeeah and his family in the novel Homes. Coauthored by Winnie Yeung and Abu Bakr, the story intimately describes the Syrian conflict and the journey Abu Bakr's family undertake to find safety and a new home in Canada.

Nominated as a 2019 Canada Reads finalist, this book is great for readers at all speeds to learn more about the crisis which has unfolded in Syria and the trials and tribulations of the refugee experience.

Over the next month, we'll be posting more about certain themes from the book and the work Shelterbox does worldwide. We will be announcing a date for a virtual event, in late September, where readers are invited to join for group discussion, including hearing remarks from the book's author(s).

There is no cost to join the book club, but donations are welcomed for Passport club's year-long campaign to aid Shelterbox in the amazing work they do. ROTARACT CORNER Reuben McCallum, of the Rotaract Highlanders, is our new District 6330 Rotaract Representative.

Reuben is our voice at the District level and his role is to act as a liaison between our Rotaract Clubs and the District leadership team.

As a founding member and past president of the Rotaract Highlanders, he humbly describes himself as detail-oriented and a quiet collaborator.

He is also known within his club as a great leader, committed, intelligent, supportive of team initiatives and encouraging to members.
