BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ROTARY FOUNDATION Excerpts from Foundation of Hope – Chapter 10 – and other sections of A Century of Service1 It was all Arch Klumph’s idea.

As RI president in 1917, he told delegates to the Atlanta convention, “Carrying on as we are, a miscellaneous community service, it seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world.”

It was hardly a stirring call to action or a motivational moment for those present.

But it was the first pebble in what would later become a landslide of support that would improve millions of lives. And as happened so many times before in Rotary, it began in the mind of one man.

That man – Arch Klumph – was a remarkable fellow. Born into a poor family in Conneauytville, Pennsylvania, USA, in 1869, Klumph moved with his parents and two brothers to Cleveland, Ohio, while he was a child. To supplement the family’s income, he left school at age 12 and went to work. At 16, he became office boy for the Cuyahoga Lumber Company. At his own initiative, he enrolled in night school; after a hard day’s work, he would walk four miles each way to school to save the tram fare.

When the business began to fail, Cuyahoga Lumber made Klumph manager. He turned the company around and made it one of the most profitable firms of its type in the Midwest. He subsequently bought the company.

Eventually the self-educated former office boy became president or vice-president of several other business enterprises, including a bank and a steamship line.

When he was 18, Klumph taught himself the flute, and three years later had so mastered the instrument that he became a flutist with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. He continued to play for the symphony for 14 years.

In 1911, Klumph became a charter member of the Rotary Club of Cleveland with the classification of “lumber – wholesale and retail.” His Rotary path followed his brilliant business and personal record of accomplishments.

Arch became club president in 1912 and president of the International Association of Rotary Clubs for 1916-17.

In his final address as club president, Klumph suggested “an emergency fund should be built up which will enable the club in future years to do many things.” He went on to become chairman of the committee that wrote the new constitution for Rotary International, and it was his idea to divide Rotary into districts, create the office of district governor, and establish the annual district conference. But he never forgot his concept of a fund to expand the good works of Rotary.

The Rotary Endowment Fund, as it was called at first, came to Klumph as “a vision, a little inspiration all of a sudden one day that the organization was peculiarly adapted to the purpose of accepting endowments to do great things.” The RI Board approved his idea but did not provide a mechanism to fund it. Indeed, for the next decade, Rotary’s leaders went along with Klumph’s proposal, but without any tangible action or enthusiasm.

As Klumph’s presidential term wound down, the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri, collected contributions for a gift for the retiring association president. When the club closed out that account, they discovered a surplus of $26.50 and decided to donate that money to start the Rotary Endowment Fund. The first seeds had been sown for the fund known today as The Rotary Foundation of RI. In 1928, when the endowment fund had grown to more than US$5,000, the fund was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International. Five Trustees, including Mr. Klumph, were appointed to "hold, invest, manage, and administer all of its property as a single trust, for the furtherance of the purposes of RI." Two years later, the Foundation made its first grant of US$500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The ISCC created by Rotarian Edgar F. "Daddy" Allen later grew into the Easter Seals organization.

Rotary’s First Four

The Great Depression and World War II both impeded significant growth for the Foundation, but the need for promoting a lasting world peace generated great post-war interest in developing the Foundation.

After Rotary founder Paul P. Harris died in 1947, contributions began pouring into Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created for the purpose of building the Foundation. That same year, the first Foundation program was established - Fellowships for Advanced Study, which was the forerunner of the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships program.

Then in 1965-66, three new programs were launched - Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants.

The Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) program was launched in 1978, with the Rotary Volunteers program being created as a part of 3-H in 1980.

The PolioPlus program was announced in 1984-85, and the following year saw the introduction of Rotary Grants for University Teachers.

The first Peace Forums were held in 1987-88, leading to the establishment of Rotary Peace Programs.

Then in 1989, 1963-64 RI President Carl P. Miller and his wife, Ruth, donated US$1 million to establish the Discovery Grants program. Throughout this time, support of the Foundation grew tremendously.

Since that first $26.50 donation in 1917, the Foundation has received contributions totaling more than US$1 billion. More than US$70 million was contributed in 2003-04 alone. To date, more than a million individuals have been recognized as Paul Harris Fellows.

A Paul Harris Fellow is someone who has contributed $1000 USD or has had that amount contributed in his or her name. Such strong support and involvement of Rotarians worldwide ensures a secure future for The Rotary Foundation as it continues its vital work for international understanding and world peace.

Arch Klumph's idea for an endowment fund dedicated to “doing good in the world” planted the seed of The Rotary Foundation in 1917. Thanks to his vision and staunch advocacy, and the extraordinary generosity of Rotary members worldwide, that fund has become one of the world's leading humanitarian foundations.

WHAT IS THE ROTARY FOUNDATION ANNUAL FUND? 2 The Annual Fund is the primary source of unrestricted support for the programs of The Rotary Foundation.

From digging clean water wells for villages in Africa to teaching basic literacy skills to children in Latin America, during any given moment in a day, thousands of Rotarians volunteer their time and expertise to ensure that all contributions given to the Annual Fund are spent wisely on quality Rotary projects.

In the 2019-20 Rotary year, US$123.6 million was donated to The Rotary Foundation’s Annual Fund.

The Annual Fund is comprised of donations from Rotarians, friends of Rotary, corporations, workplace giving vehicles and can be matched by corporate matching gifts to leverage your donation.

The Rotary Foundation and Rotary clubs around the world have hurried to provide funds, supplies, and services to Ukrainians displaced by the war.

The Rotary Foundation has raised more than $15 million in contributions that are already helping provide people in Ukraine with essential items such as water, food, shelter, medicine, and clothing.

Donations made to the Disaster Response Fund after 30 April will be available to all communities around the world that need assistance recovering from disasters.

Rotary members and other volunteers pack donated supplies at a rented warehouse in Zamosc, Poland, a major hub for refugees and a centralized coordination location for aid from clubs in Europe.

A family that stands by you Soon after Russia invaded Ukraine, Iryna Bushmina fled her home in Kyiv and journeyed to Vienna, Austria, staying with Rotary members along the way. Their generosity inspired Bushmina, a member of the Rotaract Club of Kyiv-City, to organize a larger-scale relief effort — and now, she works with Rotaract Europe to find shelter for thousands of refugees through a website called United for Peace.

"I used to just say that Rotary International is a big family. Now I really believe it," Bushmina says. "And I am convinced that this is a family that will stand by you."

Music for peace Olena Bondarenko Hiraishi grew up in the city of Dnipro in eastern Ukraine. Her father is Ukrainian, and her mother is Russian. At the age of 21, she moved to Hiroshima, Japan, where she met her husband, Masashi, a member of the Rotary Club of Hiroshima Southwest. When the war against Ukraine broke out, Satoshi Saginaw, then governor of District 2710, invited her to talk with the Hiroshima Southwest club. Bondarenko Hiraishi connected the Japanese club with Rotary leaders in Ukraine to assist in the relief work.

Her youngest son, who studies the violin, also joined the effort — through music. He and a pianist friend performed at a series of chamber music concerts in the spring, and the proceeds have gone to support Ukrainians.

"I think music is a universal language that can be understood by people from any country," she says. "My son says he will play it with the utmost prayer for peace."

CLUB GRANT QUALIFICATION At Rotary, we want every grant to demonstrate that we’re ethical, responsible leaders who use our donors’ money wisely.

Rotary’s commitment to sound financial management makes it easier for all of us to find donors, partners, and communities that are ready to work with us.

By qualifying your club each year, you agree to follow our financial and grant management practices.

If you have the power to make someone happy, do it.

The world needs more of that.

Qualifying your club for global grants takes three steps:

THREE STEPS TO CLUB GRANT QUALIFICATION 1.

Complete a grant management seminar.

Rotary members involved in grant-funded projects should participate in a grant management seminar in the district.

If the members involved in the project cannot take part, your club can send its president-elect or another member.

A minimum of one representative from your club must participate in the grant management seminar.

Grant management training materials are available in Rotary’s Learning Center.

2. Complete the club memorandum of understanding (MOU).

The MOU is an agreement between your club and district that outlines the Foundation’s minimum requirements for managing grants.

Your club president and president-elect review the MOU, sign it, and submit it to your district.

3. Agree to any additional qualification requirements set by your district.

WHAT TO REMEMBER ABOUT APPLYING FOR GLOBAL GRANTS MOST IMPORTANT POINTS! Grants and projects must meet the global grants requirements.

If you’re thinking about applying for a global grant and your club is qualified to do so, be sure that your project meets the global grants requirements.

The benefiting community must support your projects.

Global grant activities (except scholarships) must be supported by the benefiting community.

Grants must be led by Rotary members.

•

Rotary members are charged with the lead on the global grants and projects.

Grants and projects must have measurable results.

•

How will you be able to tell that your project is successful? What’s your criteria?

Projects must be sustainable.

Grants and projects must be able to be sustained by the community after the grant funds have been spent.

ROTARY FOUNDATION TRUSTEES 2 featured this month The Board of Trustees manages the business of The Rotary Foundation, the charitable arm of our organization that funds service activities.

The RI president-elect nominates the trustees, who are elected by the RI Board to four-year terms.

Ian H.S. Riseley Chair 2022-23 Trustee 2019-23 Rotary Club of Sandringham Victoria, Australia While he was RI president in 2017-18, Ian H.S. Riseley challenged every Rotary club to plant one tree per member as a way to increase Rotarian involvement in environmental issues. He estimates at least three times that many were planted, likely more than 3 million trees.

“I was really thrilled at the way in which the Rotary world embraced my request,” he says. “Everywhere we went, they were planting trees.”

Riseley is a chartered accountant and principal of Ian Riseley and Co., a firm he established in 1976. His honors include the AusAID Peacebuilder Award from the Australian government in recognition of his work in East Timor and the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the Australian community, the Rotary Foundation Distinguished Service Award, and the Service Award for a Polio-Free World.

Riseley and his wife, Juliet, a past district governor, are Rotary Foundation Major Donors and Bequest Society members. They live on seven hectares at Moorooduc, where they practice their personal philosophy of sustainable and organic living.

Hendreen Dean Rohrs Trustee 2020-23 Rotary Club of Langley Central British Columbia, Canada Dean Rohrs is an owner and administrator at Rhide Technologies Inc., which supplies soil stabilization products used in road construction. Earlier in her career, she had been a nurse in Cape Town, South Africa, on Christiaan Barnard’s heart transplant team.

From 1959-90, she was active in Red Cross in South Africa. She served on the board of the West End Seniors’ Network in British Columbia and is currently on the board of a girls school in Malawi.

Dean Rohrs has been a Rotarian since 1989 and has served RI as vice president, director, Rotary coordinator, regional Rotary Foundation coordinator, and district governor. She is a Rotary Foundation Benefactor, Major Donor, and Bequest Society member.

Dean and her husband, Reinhold, are Paul Harris Fellows.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION TRUSTEE CHAIR'S MESSAGE – JULY 2022 As an accountant, I look at the world through the lens of inputs and outputs. We can plan with precision today for success tomorrow. My profession also taught me that numbers — those inputs and outputs — can sometimes tell great stories.

One of those stories is The Rotary Foundation: What it has given the world, starting from a modest input of $26.50, is nothing short of remarkable.

In 1918, that amount — the surplus from that year’s Rotary Convention in Kansas City, Missouri — was applied, at the suggestion of 1916-17 Rotary President Arch Klumph, to a fund with the purpose of doing good in the world. ‘ The fund grew modestly until 1947, when Rotary founder Paul Harris died, and donations poured in as a tribute to him. That year, the Foundation supported scholarships for 18 students — the first indication of the greatness to come.

Later the Foundation expanded, providing programs, like Group Study Exchange, and humanitarian grants, which impacted the lives of members and communities around the world.

In 1979, a major grant helped immunize 6.3 million children in the Philippines against polio, which led to the establishment of PolioPlus in 1985.

Rotary’s work with polio eradication — helping reduce wild polio from an estimated 1,000 cases daily in 1988 to just six total cases in 2021 — has been one of the most ambitious humanitarian projects ever undertaken by a nongovernmental body. That success story alone shows the significance and widespread impact of Rotary and its Foundation.

Perhaps what is even more remarkable is that polio eradication is but one part of the Foundation’s efforts.

Today, the Foundation has grown into a multimillion-dollar charity. Our robust funding model allows districts the flexibility to choose which Rotary aspects they would like to support — polio eradication, scholarships, district grants, global grants, and more. Today’s Foundation impacts the world through disaster relief, disease prevention, peace education, and other areas.

Everyone in Rotary is part of this great legacy; it is our responsibility to keep it going. This year, the trustees have set the goal of raising $430 million. I know the expectations are high. But I also know just how much our members can achieve.

To get there, we will work together as we always do, with each club and individual giving what they can. In this way, we will ensure that we meet our ambitious but achievable goal and move our Foundation forward.
