"FREEPORT, Grand Bahama -- Rotarians on Grand Bahama came together during Hurricane Sandy with the activation of the emergency Rotary Water Plant from October 24-28, 2012. Commissioned after the devastating hurricanes of Frances and Jeanne in 2004, the plant provides potable drinking water to residents during times when serious weather impacts the local supply.

Rotarians activated the plant's RO machine in advance of Hurricane Sandy, putting about 5,000 gallons of water in the tank. Sandy impacted Grand Bahama for much of Friday and into the evening and early hours of Saturday.

The plant was re-activated early Saturday morning and Rotary volunteers began to assemble to help. They were put to work sanitizing and filling the nearly 500 one-gallon jugs which had been collected and stored in the plant throughout the year. Left - Rotarians fill jugs. On Saturday, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Rotarians estimate they gave away approximately 3,600 gallons of water to persons who came to the plant either with their own jugs or took those which they had to give them. In addition, they sent two tank trailers (275 gallons each) with Rotarian Peter Turnquest to be taken to East End Grand Bahama once the water subsided. The Grand Bahama Fire Brigade also made two trips with 55 gallon drums to flush toilets at some of the old folks' homes on the island. By Sunday morning most of Freeport had city water trickling through the pipes; however certain pockets did not, including East End, from the old missile base, the entire settlement of Eight Mile Rock, and West End. Parts of East End are still without water mid-week post-Sandy. Rotarians met again at the plant on Sunday and gave away an additional estimated 1,500 to 2,000 gallons of water. The Rotary water plant crew would like to credit ZNS northern service radio for broadcasting their announcements about the water plant being open and for the station's continuous storm coverage. All the Rotary volunteers who assisted with the emergency water plant project were pleased the plant performed flawlessly and that they were able to continue Rotary's motto - Service Above Self and help many persons in the community in a meaningful way. The Grand Bahama Emergency Water Relief Foundation (The Rotary Water Plant) was envisioned by the TK Foundation who saw Rotary as the perfect partner and commissioned a joint project involving Rotary Districts 5280 - Los Angeles, CA; 7020 - Nassau and the Caribbean; and 6990 - Grand Bahama and South Florida; with assistance from the Rotary Foundation, and numerous corporate sponsors.

Rotary Sunrise Supports Seniors The Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise has long been a supporter of Senior Month activities in the community, and this year is no exception. This year the Club has donated $2000 towards the cost of hosting seniors from the various communities island-wide at a dinner and dance at the Westin Hotel hosted by the Department of Children and Family Services.

Rotary Sunrise Supports Crisis Centre The Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise has adopted the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre as one of the organizations it is supporting during this Rotary year. In September the Club launched a donation drive and donated needed clothing, household items, toiletries and food vouchers to the Center. The Club has committed to be a sponsor of the Centre’s annual Jingle Bell Run in December and has made a donation of CI$1000 to the event. Additionally members of the Club will serve as volunteers at the event. We will soon have the generator on our island to be used by St. John Rescue, the EMTs, St John Fire Department, USVI National Park and the MKS Clinic to save people on our island. A busy club! The Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise honored recently Dr. Judith Arndell. In keeping with the 2012-2013 RI theme of "Peace through Service," The Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise invited nomination for its annual Vocational Service Awards, which was initiated this Rotary year 2012. Dr. Judith Arndell was selected from among the nominees submitted for the award.

To be eligible for the award, the nominee (individual) had to demonstrate the following attributes:
Leadership of the highest standard and a proven track record in the area of Peace Management, Dispute Resolution or Restorative Justice as a chosen vocation; Exemplification of the Rotary spirit of "Service Above Self"; Involvement at the community level in activities connected to or associated with Peace Management, Dispute Resolution or Restorative Justice; High ethical and moral standards displayed in performance / work related to selected area of vocational service.
Dr. Arndell is the President and co-founder of the UJIMA Foundation, which operates a residential therapeutic facility for "at risks' boys. Dr. Arndell has been a clinical psychologist on the island for over 25 years. Right - President Marcellia Henry and Dr. Arndell. Dr. Arndell also offers counseling at the Turning Point Center for Drug and Alcohol abuse. She is also the President of the Board of the Charlotte Brookson Academy of the Performing Arts. The Academy, which started in August 2012, offers curriculum-based professional instructions in theatre arts, dance, music, visual arts, health and physical education. In April 2008, Dr. Judith Arndell was given a Royal Decoration by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands for her service to the community. Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise was pleased to present Dr. Judith Arndell, an exemplary member of our St. Maarten community, with the Vocational Service Award.

ROTARY CLUB OF ST. CROIX MID-ISLE During the month of November, St. Croix Mid-Isle had an interesting approach to The Rotary Foundation. The club Foundation Committee held short 10-10 minute sessions to try to help all club members make some sense out of such terms as District Grants, World Grants, Matching Grant (old term), District Simplified Grants (old term), Ambassadorial Scholarships, Rotary Peace Fellowships, Paul Harris, Group Study Exchange, Annual Programs Fund, Permanent Fund, Rotary Foundation Benefactors, Bequest Society, just to name a few. John Harper and his committee brought this important information to all the club members in the hope that all club members understand how important each personal small contribution is in sustaining the world-wide efforts of Rotary. President Ralph was looking forward to gaining more understanding of how important his small cog is to the overall success of Rotary in the World.

5-Student showdown expected at Finals of Seven Seas Rotary - Rotaract Spelling Bee

The 2nd Annual Seven Seas Rotary-Rotaract Spelling Bee was buzzing with excitement recently at the Semi-Final round with 10 students competing for a spot in the finals. The finalists are Rashika Ramchandani and Disha Sharma both from Methodist Agogic Centre - B.F.M., Michael Leslie from Hillside Christian School, Shandon Fleming from Learning Unlimited, and Mark McAlmont from Methodist Agogic Centre Rev. Gumbs Campus. Just like the semi-final round, the 5 participants will be taking turns to spell out 20 words each on stage, and the top three scorers will receive some exciting prizes such as a Macbook Pro, an Ipad and a 16 Gb Ipod.

There will be consolation prizes for the 4th and 5th place students, for their achievements in reaching the finals. The winning school will also receive a desktop computer with printer, and the most supported school will receive a multi-purpose printer for their school. The event is taking place at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. The Spelling Bee can also be followed on the internet at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/spellingbee1 Unlike last year, there are no regionals, but the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs are looking into hosting the regional finals in the coming years, where various neighboring islands can participate. The Rotary-Mid Isle and Rotaract Sunrise Clubs would like to thank the main sponsor Seven Seas Vitamins and their agents FOH Distributors, platinum sponsors Sol and Scotiabank, including various business contributions in kind, AUC and their staff, Rotarians and Retractors and their families, the panelists from several other Rotary Clubs for their support in making the 2nd annual Spelling Bee preliminary and semi-final rounds a huge success, and are looking for a big climax in the finals.

Dear Rotarians First and foremost, I would like to recognise five clubs in District 7020 who had an impressive first quarter. In an aim to give clubs the opportunity to be recognised throughout the year as well as at the annual District 7020 conference in the Cayman Islands, the Club-of-the-Quarter award has been instituted this Rotaract year. The quality and quantity of projects undertaken by clubs within District 7020 continues to be impressive and inspiring. I am pleased to announce the following citations for Q1:

Please continue to provide support to the Rotaract clubs in your area and throughout District 7020. During the month of December our thoughts often turn to peace on earth, and this year we have all been focused on and working diligently towards peace through service. Our education programs promote peace by creating an environment of goodwill and international understanding that arises from the coming together of people from cultures and countries around the world. Our humanitarian programs overcome poverty, disease, hunger, and illiteracy: the greatest obstructions to peace. As individuals, we may feel helpless in the face of brutal events which take place thousands of miles away and in our backyards; however, as a team we have the power – through the Rotary Foundation – to make peace a reality. With your support the Foundation can continue to make us all peacemakers. In addition to peace, the holidays inspire thoughts of family and Family Month is a perfect time to marvel on our own families. Being a Rotarian or Rotaractor demands a great deal from each of us, but our membership can and should greatly enhance our interactions with family and life at home. Our respective commitments to service about self and fellowship through service should never compete with, but rather complement, our responsibilities to loved ones. Every club should strive for balance between us and our families and the family of Rotary. The only way to ensure that our organisation today is even stronger tomorrow is to work together, as a family. Without the support of our families many of us would not be able to put the best of ourselves into our service. I encourage you to honour Rotary’s commitment to family this month by participating in shared activities that will strengthen your own families as well as those in your community – a powerful catalyst to inspire peace and nourish tomorrow. ROTARY SUNRISE OF ROAD TOWN ...submitted by Ken Guiste
Rotary Sunrise Ramps up The Rainbow Children’s Home On Monday, 28th October, 2012, the Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town officially unveiled the concrete ramp at the Rainbow Children's Home, Lower Estate Tortola. This project was completed in the month of October which is known as Vocational Service Month in Rotary. During this month, Rotarians are charged to contribute to their vocational talents to meet the needs of the community. It is with this in mind that the Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town envisioned the building of a concrete ramp at the Rainbow Children's Home to improve wheelchair bound occupants and visitors' access to the entrance and exit of the Home. At left – members of Rotary Sunrise preparing the ramp This project team which was led by Rotarian Colin Bramble and Community Service Director Richard Arthur commenced work on the construction of the ramp on 13th October, 2012 and the final work was completed on 27th October, 2012. However during this period they were many Rotarians who assisted with this project but in particular the three who utilized their precise vocational skills to ensure that this project was a success were:

In addition to the above-mentioned Rotary Club Sunrise, significant financial assistance was gained from LIME (BVI), Hunte & Co Law Chambers and material donations from Boynes Welding and James Todman Construction Limited. Rotary Sunrise Announces New Board & Directors for Rotary Year 2013-2014 Rotary Club Sunrise completed their process of nominations for their new board and directors during their regular club meeting on Tuesday 30th October. The new board takes on it role from 1st July 2013. Current President Dr. Allison Flax-Archer will pass on the gavel to current President-Elect Norman Allen. The nomination proceedings were conducted by Rotary Club Sunrise Charter President Monica Ramgeet in the presence of Assistant Governor Ron Potter.

It’s a good thing Mrs. Idris Hovis is an early riser because, by 7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning 3rd November, her tidy wooden house near Peebles Hospital was a beehive of activity. Armed with scrapers, paintbrushes and paint rollers, members of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Road Town devoted their morning to giving this senior citizen’s home a much-needed facelift. Nine Rotarians, with guidance and supplies provided by James Harris of the Department of Health and Social Development, cheerfully attacked the task. As songs, jokes and laughter filled the air, they made short work of the job. Mrs. Hovis, who has owned and lived in the home for decades, took all the noise and confusion in her stride and expressed warm thanks for this latest example of the Sunrise Rotary Club’s commitment to community service. GRANT MANAGEMENT SEMINAR IN ST. MAARTEN FUTURE VISION IS HERE! Weekend of November 17, 2012 The Grant Management Seminar was conducted in St. Maarten on Saturday, November 17, 2012. The program was well attended by clubs in St. Maarten, St. Martin, Anguilla, and St. Barth’s. The Grants Management Seminar is a requirement of TRF that at least 2 members of any club that wishes to be certified must attend this seminar. Once a club is certified, then the club can have access to the funding – from TRF and from the District as well. Rotary was concerned that the monies expended on its projects were considerable, and yet the projects were not as effective as they could be. Indications were that 80 percent of projects were small and having less impact than Rotary hoped for. Only 20 per cent of the projects were big enough to make an impact in their communities and big enough to give RI a better public image, attract members and donations.
Very briefly, there will be only two grants now: (1) District grants and (2) Global grants. One of the major changes with grants and accountability will be a focus on two words beginning with "S." These are

District funds. For 2013-14, DGE Jeremy Hurst is planning to offer 9 district grants of $5000 each! Competitive grants! He also wants to keep $10,000 in reserve and to apply $10,000 in a rather unique way, as follows:

The $10,000 will be divided into five $2000 grants for projects that will be partnerships between Rotary Clubs and either Interact or Rotaract or both. The projects will be sponsored by the Rotary Club but initiated by Rotaract and Interact. The project must involve Interact and/or Rotaract as equal partners with Rotary. The Rotary club, of course, will be responsible for completing and submitting the application. More information can be found at the following resources:

ROTARY CLUB OF LIGUANEA PLAINS – JAMAICA
Rotary Club of Liguanea Plains (RCLP) recently presented its second annual donation to the Jamaica Cancer Society to assist in its work against cancer in Jamaica.

Like Rotary, the Cancer Society is a voluntary organization that seeks to enhance the quality of lives of persons by offering screenings at well subsidized rates, as well as counseling etc. for those afflicted by the disease. RCLP's support of the society is in keeping with its vision of assisting in the community – and this fits into Rotary International's area of focus on maternal and child health. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and during this time, RCLP seeks to assist in creating awareness by having relevant guest speakers and assisting in promoting awareness at project and/or fundraising venues. This year, Mrs. Yulit Gordon, head of the Jamaica Cancer Society was guest speaker at a recent meeting where she was presented with a cheque from RCLP.

The Rotary Club of Liquanea Plains Presents a Vocational Service Award RCLP congratulates our inaugural recipient of the Vocational Service Award, Miss Nadeen Spence. Miss Spence is a trained teacher who currently works as Students’ Services Manager at the University of the West Indies.

Nadeen Spence – dedicated to developing young leaders Miss Nadeen Spence, a trained teacher and currently PhD candidate in Gender and Development Studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, is the Student Services and Development Manager (SSDM) at the Mary Seacole Hall of residence at the UWI. She was formerly the SSDM for Leadership and Student Engagement also at UWI Mona. Miss Spence’s resume also includes political leadership and personal charity. For Miss Spence, “It’s a lot of work and time and insistence and motivating, but it is extremely rewarding.” Nadeen’s vision for work with women, as she puts it “I want to develop a safe house for young women who are vulnerable and at risk, particularly young women who have great academic and leadership potential. I also would like to see the establishment of a curriculum which targets the development of young women into being strong and confident people and leaders. I am also learning Yoga and meditation, because I believe in their restorative powers this will become a part of my leadership development intervention.”
The Power Walk Challenge The Rotary Club of Liguanea Plains was pleased to be a part of a momentous relay walk to create cancer awareness and to raise funds to purchase two cancer treatment machines for Jamaica! The walk, a project of the Rotary Club of Montego Bay Sunrise, begun in Montego Bay and ended in Kingston, at the Emancipation park, over a two day period, October 19-20, 2012, covering approximately 350 kilometres. Dubbed the Clover Allen Wilson Power Walk Challenge, the walk was organized in a relay format, supported by a team with a coach, nurse and other support staff supplying hydration and nutrition for the walkers along the way. Clover Allen Wilson is currently battling cancer, on the inspiration of her story, including her strong will and determination to survive, the need for more equipment and better treatment options came to the fore. ROTARY CLUB OF ST. THOMAS Dan and Valerie Hazeldinen, Regional Coordinators for Virgin Islands, spoke to the RCSTT on the services and goals the Salvation Army offers in St. Thomas. Most people are familiar with name, Salvation Army, the recognizable red shield and the bell ringers with the red kettles at Christmas. However, Dan and Valerie, a husband and wife team assigned to St Thomas only a few short months ago, noted that the Salvation Army is first and foremost a church. Founded in 1865 the church is now in 127 countries worldwide. The main chapel is on Main Street in St. Thomas. In addition to church services the Salvation Army provides emergency services to people and families in crisis and in need of assistance; they operate a food program and a thrift store. The church serves approximately 150 meals daily – the majority being served are homeless, no income or low income individuals, but anyone is welcome to the free meals. One of the Hazeldinen's goals is to locate a larger building for the thrift store which the church operates. Another goal is to establish a Lighthouse project aimed at rehabilitating adults here in St Thomas.

ROTARY CLUB OF WEST NASSAU On Thursday, October 18th, The Rotary Club of West Nassau inducted its newest member Christiaan Sawyer. He was sponsored by his dad, Rotarian Dwight Sawyer. Mr. Sawyer is also the owner of Jigsaw Records Management, a full service records and information management company. He was the recipient of the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2008. He is a former member of Toastmasters Club 7178, and currently serves as the Chairman of the SME Division of the Chamber of Commerce. He is an active member of the Hillview SDA church. Hobbies include, reading, sports and travelling. He is currently married to one wife, Mrs. Nadine Sawyer of 14 years and they have 2 children Jared (8) and Alisa (6). He is passionate about business ownership and empowering young people throughout the Bahamas to be resourceful, and committed to pursuing their dreams. Harborside Rotary Club and Youth with a Mission (YWAM) partnered to distribute bins of Thanksgiving food for residents who are finding it difficult to make ends meet this year. Members of the St. Croix Federation of Teachers collected food last weekend and gave it to Catholic Charities Tuesday for distribution Cherilyn Derusha, children's ministry director at YWAM in Estate Diamond, said the less fortunate have food stamps, but there are also working families with budgets stretched to the max. “It's the people who are almost middle class that need our help,” Derusha, said. She added her team delivered Thanksgiving food and the fixings to a policeman, his wife, and their four children on Tuesday. “They make too much for food stamps,” Derusha said. “They had to take a pay cut. People won't ask others for help because they don't want them to know they're having difficulties.” “Dads are stressed out over how they're going to provide for their families,” she said, adding that they generally give the food to families of children they do mission work with in YWAM and church projects. Harborside Rotary member Lionel Downer said the club has been providing food for the needy for more than 10 years. Rotarians quickly filled 18 red plastic storage containers. Downer said the volunteers had 20 deliveries last year and the number served is usually around 15. Rotarians purchased items out of their own pocket. Merchants Market, Cost You Less and Teddy Richards helped sponsor the donations. Five Rotarians were working Monday at Teddy's Party Center with a turkey, Stove Top stuffing, pigeon peas, mixed vegetables, cranberry sauce, fruit cocktail, rice and packets of Sazon seasoning.
