MY DEAR CHANGEMAKERS,

November 2021 , 2020

Page 5

I first discovered the value of service when I saw how a few simple acts can immeasurably change lives. It began when I joined others in my club for a project to bring toilets and clean drinking water to rural villages near our city. It moved forward when we promoted sanitation and provided opportunities for education across the country, thanks to generous gifts from supporters who believed in our projects as much as those of us on the ground did. There is no better time of the year to be reminded of that generosity than November, which is Rotary Foundation Month. As the charitable arm of Rotary International, The Rotary Foundation is the engine that powers so many Rotary projects throughout the world. The Foundation transforms your gifts into projects that change lives. It is the Foundation that helps us to get closer to our goal of eradicating polio, to show more people how we promote peace through tangible actions, and to demonstrate the impact our projects have in our areas of focus. Consider some recent projects that were made possible by the Foundation. •

• •

The Rotary clubs of Guatemala La Reforma, Guatemala, and Calgary, Alberta, received an $80,000 global grant to organize a comprehensive plan to train nurses and rural health care workers to prevent and treat cervical cancer and to implement a sustainable system of referrals in seven regions of Guatemala. More than two dozen hospitals in Honduras received personal protective equipment for their medical staff thanks to a $169,347 global grant sponsored by the Rotary clubs of Villa Real de Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and Waldo Brookside-Kansas City, Missouri. The Rotary clubs of Cotonou Le Nautile, Benin, and Tournai Haut-Escaut, Belgium, received a $39,390 global grant to provide agricultural training at an ecologically responsible permaculture mini-farm connected to a center for children in Sowé, Benin. This will help a new generation of farmers become economically self-sufficient

I like comparing The Rotary Foundation to the Taj Mahal, a monument of one man’s love for a woman. The Foundation is a dynamic monument of our love for all of humanity. This month, I am asking all Rotary clubs to bring attention to the Foundation. It is what connects all Rotarians worldwide and transforms our collective passions into projects that change lives. Visit rotary.org/donate; once there, you will have an opportunity to give directly to the program you’re most passionate about. Thank you for giving your all to Rotary. You are the reason that Rotary is able to do more and grow more. Let’s continue to represent that important legacy this month, this year, and beyond as we Serve to Change Lives.

ROTARY’S NOVEMBER FOCUS ON THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

Because RI President, Shekhar, mentions the Taj Mahal, it might be interesting to learn a little more about it.

The Story behind the Taj Mahal The Taj Mahal was built as a tomb for Mumtaz Mahal (“Chosen One of the Palace”) by her husband, the Mughal emperor Shah Jahān (reigned 1628–58). She died in childbirth in 1631, after having been the emperor's inseparable companion since their marriage in 1612. The Taj Mahal is symbol of love, commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1632 to honour his favourite wife who died while giving birth to their 14th child. (Wikipedia) India’s most famous and widely recognized building, it is situated in the eastern part of the city on the southern (right) bank of the Yamuna (Jumna) River. Agra Fort (Red Fort), also on the right bank of the Yamuna, is about 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the Taj Mahal. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Taj-Mahal Click here for a video displaying and explaining the Taj Mahal.

Vaccines are one of the safest and most effective ways to protect people from life-threatening and preventable diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted life-saving vaccine campaigns. As a result, there a growing risk of resurgence of vaccine preventable infections, including polio, measles, and tuberculosis. Rotary has advocated, distributed, and administered vaccines to help reduce polio cases by 99.9% worldwide. Clubs globally are using the same strategy to help end the COVID-19 pandemic. Here we show the importance of vaccines and why it’s one of the most reliable ways to protect yourself and future generations from infectious disease. Click here to read more.

NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH – HERE’S WHY! Each year, Rotary International highlights November as Rotary Foundation Month to emphasize the importance of and need for Rotarian support of The Rotary Foundation. Contributions from Rotarians around the world go to the Foundation's Annual Programs Fund, which provides grants and awards through Foundation programs; and the Permanent Fund, an endowment from which only the earnings are spent in support of Foundation programs, ensuring the long-term viability of the Foundation. Annual Fund – Your gift to the Annual Fund helps Rotary clubs take action today to create positive change in communities at home and around the world. Your contributions help us strengthen peace efforts, provide clean water and sanitation, support education, grow local economies, save mothers and children, protect the environment and fight disease. The Every Rotarian Every Year initiative asks every Rotarian to support The Rotary Foundation every year. In addition to contributing to the Annual Fund on a regular basis, members are encouraged to get involved in a Foundation project or program. Permanent Fund - Rotarians are invited to give a gift that will go beyond your lifetime - a donation to The Rotary Foundation's endowment, the Permanent Fund. This fund enables individuals to combine their gifts into a significant force to address the world's greatest needs for generations to come. In a Rotary year, about $8 million from the Permanent Fund is made available to support Foundation programs. The Permanent Fund is an endowment, and the funds are managed very differently from the Annual Programs Fund. The principal of a gift to the Permanent Fund is NEVER spent but is invested in perpetuity. Each year, the earnings are applied to fund educational and humanitarian programs of The Rotary Foundation and as District Designated Funds, as the Donor so designates at the time of making a bequest. Present earnings do not predict future returns and markets fluctuate, but the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation keep very tight controls on the types of investments made and manage the fund conservatively.

UPDATE ON POLIO ERADICATION

Summary of new WPV and cVDPV viruses this week (AFP cases and ES positives): • • •

Nigeria: 37 cVDPV2 cases and 19 cVDPV2 positive environmental samples Senegal: one cVDPV2 case Somalia: one cVDPD2 case

This week, the GPEI got the greenlight to resume house-to-house vaccination campaigns in Afghanistan which had been halted for over three years. Starting November 8, the campaigns will target over 3.3 million children in parts of the country that were previously inaccessible. Read more below on this positive development. For many of the women and men who spent their careers fighting polio, retirement offers not rest and relaxation, but a continuation of their life’s work towards eradication. Across the Eastern Mediterranean Region, once and forever polio fighters are inspiring the next generation of eradicators with their commitment to the cause, and belief in the benefits of a polio-free future. The vaccination campaign, which begins on November 8, will be the first in over three years to reach all children in Afghanistan, including more than 3.3 million children in some parts of the country who have previously remained inaccessible to vaccination campaigns. A second nationwide polio vaccination campaign has also been agreed and will be synchronised with Pakistan’s own polio campaign planned in December. Click here to read more about this.

And finally – Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only two remaining polio endemic countries in the world. In Afghanistan, despite continuous concerted efforts by the polio programme to achieve polio free status, the battle to finish the last mile has become a pivoting challenge, resulting in an increase in the number of polio cases during the last three years. Unfortunately, poliovirus is currently spreading to the provinces that have remained polio free for a long time. Click here to read more about this setback.

Story from Kabarole, Uganda Sally and Keith Halsey spent two years as volunteer lecturers at a Teachers' College in Uganda. During this time, they worked with the Rotary Club of Saltash, Cornwall, UK as the International partner and the Rotary Club of Kabarole, Uganda as the Host club to accomplish a number of projects to improve this community. Large projects included improving a medical clinic and bringing clean water to the college. They also undertook some smaller projects like teaching students at a school how to make Tippy Taps. While Sally and Keith were living at the College, they had first-hand experience of having to cope without water. During the dry season, December to March, it was common for the students to have to walk to the local

swamp to collect water for their daily needs, such as washing their clothes and bathing. But on many occasions, they would have to drink this water from the swamp stream, which was the same water used to wash their motorbikes. This caused bad stomach upsets and skin conditions. A Rotary Global Grant was applied for with funding from Saltash and a Canadian Rotary club and after five years of perseverance, in 2021 the college now has a water pump that is powered by Solar Panels. This pumps water from a small stream (not the swamp) which is filtered and then stored in a huge water tank. The project also included a flushing toilet block with a shower. The Rotary Club of Saltash Rotary Club received a letter of appreciation from the College Principal telling them how this project has transformed the lives of the students and staff. The electricity bill has been cut by 45% due to the Solar Panels.

Passport Clubs differ from e-clubs in that members live within a defined geographical region – in this case, District 6330. However, that’s not always the case. The D6330 Global Passport Club members’ defined geographical area is the globe. If you think this new style of Rotary club might be a good fit for you - reach out!

When someone asks you What is a Passport Club? The founding principle is simple: Make Rotary fit your life! To facilitate this, the 6330 Passport Club conducts business electronically and offers several in-person opportunities per year. In lieu of weekly meetings, members are encouraged to engage in humanitarian service, however that works best for them! The members of the Rotary Club of District 6330 Passport are full Rotary members, with the same privileges and rights as Rotarians who are members of traditional clubs.

A LITTLE HUMOUR What’s the difference between a United States senator and a Canadian senator? In America, you must win an election to become a senator. In Canada, you have to lose one.

A Ukrainian from Winnipeg goes to the Motor Vehicle branch to apply for a driver’s licence. He has to take an eye test. The clerk shows him a card with the letters: CZWIXNOSTACZ “Can you read this?” the clerk asks. “Read it?” the Ukrainian replies. “I know the guy!”

Three hockey fans go mountain climbing. One climber is a devoted Canucks fan, one is a Maple Leafs fan, and one is a fan of the Canadiens. As they climb higher, they get into a heated argument about which of them is the most loyal to their particular team. Finally, as they reach the summit, the Vancouver climber takes a running leap and throws himself off the mountain, yelling, “This is for the Canucks.” Not wanting to be outdone, the Toronto fan walks to the edge of the precipice and yells, “This is for the Toronto Maple Leafs,” then pushes the Montreal Canadiens fan off the cliff.

It’s game seven of the Stanley Cup Final, and a man makes his way to his seat right at centre ice. He sits down, noticing that the seat next to him is empty. He leans over and asks his neighbour if someone will be sitting there. “No” says the neighbour. “The seat will stay empty.” “This is incredible,” said the man. “Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Stanley Cup and not use it?” The neighbour says, “Well, actually, the seat belongs to my wife. She was supposed to come with me, but she passed away. This is the first Stanley Cup we haven’t been together at since we got married over 30 years ago.” “Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. That’s terrible. But couldn’t you find someone else, a relative or friend, to take the seat?” The man shakes his head. “No, they’re all still at the funeral.”
