ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT FEBRUARY 2024 MESSAGE A virtuous cycle I am enthused and encouraged by your embrace of mental health initiatives throughout the Rotary world. More than 1,000 of you have responded so far to an ongoing survey by the Rotary Action Group on Mental Health Initiatives, offering your feedback on what Rotary can do to improve the personal well-being of members.

The top suggestions are illuminating. Rotary members are asking for more fellowship, camaraderie, conversation, cohesiveness, and connection. They also want more recognition, validation, and integration. They are seeking more service opportunities, and they want more wellness activities, including mental health speakers, awareness efforts, and education.

Our members not only appreciate the great focus on mental health, but they also believe that making more of the Rotary experience will materially improve their lives. I find it interesting that members are not asking anything dramatically new of their club – rather they want more of what we do best. For example, connection can be improved during meetings simply by assigning seating once each month to encourage people to speak with someone new.

Here are some great ways that we can help achieve these results and make Rotary more appealing to those considering membership. First, we need to acknowledge the importance of increasing belonging in our clubs and to encourage Rotary members to make the most of every opportunity for new and stronger connections.

Public health experts worldwide are concerned about increasing levels of loneliness – the U.S. surgeon general has even declared it an epidemic. Mental health experts agree that finding groups and clubs around common hobbies and interests is a strong way to create greater connectedness. This is what Rotary is all about. We need to make sure all of our members are fully engaged and that our communities are better aware of this inherent strength.

Second, if your club has found new ways to build connection, please share your stories with us at mindhealth@rotary.org so that we can make them more broadly known within the Rotary world. Your good ideas might inspire others. Post your service project stories on Rotary showcase.

And finally, I encourage you to share feedback from surveys like this with your club and bring forward your own ideas to improve your club experience and meet your peers’ expectations. The journey we have begun is about more than mental health. It is about taking advantage of the full strength of our wonderful organization and helping all members feel that they are part of a community that cares deeply about their personal wellbeing.

Everything you do to strengthen connections in Rotary, with each other and the people we serve, also helps improve mental health. And everything we do to improve mental health helps strengthen those connections.

Let’s continue this virtuous cycle.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION TRUSTEE CHAIR FEBRUARY 2024 - MESSAGE The Groundwork for Peace Following the news is challenging these days. Stories of war and violence are deeply discouraging. It breaks my heart when I hear about innocent bystanders, particularly women and children, who are caught in the crossfire of conflict.

Is there anything we can do about it? We certainly can’t turn away from the problem. I think in these times, we need to ship our focus from what we can’t change to what we can do. We can also support what we know works.

February is Rotary’s Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention Month. It is one of our areas of focus because peace is central to everything we do in Rotary. Even though most of us aren’t diplomats at the negotiating table or peacebuilders working on active conflicts, in Rotary’s singular way what we do works to promote peace and prevent conflict somewhere, every day.

Every Rotary member should remember this during the month of February: When you support any of the areas of focus of The Rotary Foundation, you are contributing to peace. Foundation grants that address fundamental issues – such as a global grant focused on enhancing basic literacy in a community – will cultivate a better understanding of the world and lead to great economic stability, layng the groundwork for peace.

You can say the same for all the areas of focus, from the environment to economic development. They help stabilize communities, lift families out of poverty, and foster the pursuit of education.

Peace is and always has been interwoven into the fabric of Rotary beyond our projects, too. In 1999, when we established the Rotary Peace Centers through a visionary initiative of our Foundation, we reaffirmed this commitment. This month, we are once again renewing that vision, with Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul, our host partner for the newest Rotary Peace Center, as it takes its first steps to prepare for the initial cohort of students arriving in early 2025.

All along the way, as Rotary has evolved into a global force for good, it has championed peace and understanding in countless ways, and our Foundation reains the great driving force behind that vision. It will be part of Rotary’s eternal legacy.

And by supporting our work, you will be able to say that you are a part of that legacy. You can directly support by visiting rotary.org/donate and selecting peacebuilding and conflict prevention as the area of focus.

So, yes, there is a lot you can do to support peace and prevent conflict. The next step is up to you.

* Rotary International celebrates its anniversary on February 23rd each year, marking the day the organization was founded in 1905 by Paul Harris and three other businessmen in Chicago. This day is known as World Rotary Day, commemorating the establishment of the first Rotary club and its enduring legacy of service and community improvement.

Rotary is a global network of volunteers and professionals committed to providing humanitarian services, encouraging high ethical standards in all vocations, and helping build goodwill and peace in the world. Its members, known as Rotarians, are part of Rotary clubs, which are part of the larger organization known as Rotary International.

PEACE -MONTH OF FEBRUARY Peace and Conflict Resolution/Prevention

Situated in different parts of the world, the Rotary Peace Centers offer tailor-made curricula to train individuals devoted to peacebuilding and conflict resolution — no matter where they land.

by Jeff Ruby Illustrations by Jason Schneider Rita Lopidia vividly recalls her experiences as a Rotary Peace Fellow at the University of Bradford in England.

“The classes in African politics and UN peacekeeping were my favorite,” she says. “The politics course challenged me to dig deeper into research to understand the history of the continent, and the peacekeeping class aided my understanding of global politics. As a practitioner, that was an eye-opener to have a global view of events happening around the world.”

Lopidia's time at the Rotary Peace Center profoundly affected her. "After graduation, I traveled back to Africa and settled in Uganda due to the ongoing conflict in South Sudan," she explains. "There I established the EVE Organization for Women Development and started engaging the South Sudanese refugees in Uganda and their host communities. Through my organization, we were able to mobilize South Sudanese women to participate in the South Sudan peace process promoted by eastern Africa's Intergovernmental Authority for Development — and that led to the signing of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan in 2018."

Lopidia is just one of the 1,500-plus peace fellows from more than 115 countries who have graduated from a Rotary Peace Center since the program was created in 1999; the first peace centers began classes three years later. Currently, Rotary has seven peace centers in various locations around the world; the newest, at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda — the first in Africa — welcomed its inaugural cohort of peace fellows in 2021. Next, Rotary plans to establish a peace center in the Middle East or North Africa, perhaps as soon as 2024, and has set its sights on opening one in Latin America by 2030.

As you will discover, the curriculum at each peace center has been carefully crafted to address specific aspects of the peacebuilding process — and train the next generation of global change-makers.

Today, over 70 million people are displaced as a result of conflict, violence, persecution, and human rights violations. Half of them are children.

We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.

Rotary creates environments of peace As a humanitarian organization, peace is a cornerstone of our mission. We believe when people work to create peace in their communities, that change can have a global effect.

By carrying out service projects and supporting peace fellowships and scholarships, our members take action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, discrimination, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.

ROTARY’S FOUR ROLES IN PROMOTING PEACE Rotary and its members are: Practitioners – Our work fighting disease, providing clean water and sanitation, improving the health of mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies directly builds the optimal conditions for peaceful societies.

Educators – Our Rotary Peace Centers have trained more than 1,600 peace fellows to become effective catalysts for peace through careers in government, education, and international organizations.

Mediators – Our members have negotiated humanitarian ceasefires in areas of conflict to allow polio vaccinators to reach children who are at risk.

Advocates – Our members have an integral role as respected, impartial participants during peace processes and in post-conflict reconstruction. We focus on creating communities and convening groups that are connected, inclusive, and resilient.

Each year, Rotary awards up to 130 fully funded fellowships for dedicated leaders from around the world to study at one of our peace centers.

Through academic training, practice, and global networking opportunities, the Rotary Peace Centers program develops the capacity of peace and development professionals to become effective catalysts for peace. The fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and internship and field-study expenses.

Since the program began in 2002, the Rotary Peace Centers have trained more than 1,700 fellows who now work in over 140 countries. Many serve as leaders in governments; NGOs; education and research institutions; peacekeeping and law enforcement agencies; and international organizations like the United Nations Our fellowships The Rotary Peace Fellowship is designed for leaders with work experience in peace and development. Our fellows are committed to community and international service and the pursuit of peace. Each year, The Rotary Foundation awards up to 50 fellowships for master’s degrees and up to 80 for certificate studies at premier universities.

NEW MEMBERS and PEACE Rotary is a global service organization that places a strong emphasis on the pursuit of peace, and new members can play a significant role in advancing this mission.

New members of Rotary – along with more seasoned members – should think of yourselves as ambassadors for peace and embrace the organization's commitment to promoting peace and goodwill in the world.

By actively participating in peace initiatives, collaborating on projects, and embodying Rotary's values, you can make a meaningful contribution to the cause of peace both locally and globally.

Here are some ideas: Understand Rotary's Mission. Rotary International's mission is to promote peace, goodwill, and understanding among people of different backgrounds and cultures.

Participate in Peace Initiatives. Rotary has several peace-related initiatives and programs, such as the Rotary Peace Centers, which offer scholarships for individuals pursuing careers in peace and conflict resolution.

Collaborate on Peace Projects. Rotary clubs often undertake projects that promote peace and address the root causes of conflict, such as poverty, lack of education, and access to clean water.

Educate Yourself. Take the time to educate yourselves about global peace issues, current conflicts, and the role that Rotary plays in addressing these challenges.

Lead by Example. Set a positive example by demonstrating the principles of peace and understanding in your own actions and interactions.

A MESSAGE FROM Lorna Gunning Fratschko Membership Chair, District 6330 Happy New Year to you all! I hope that your 2024 is off to a great start!

Once again, thank you to everyone for yours and your club's attention to membership. We are having a good “membership” year so far with total new members at 26. So, we are still tracking at a 2% increase from July 1, 2023, and hoping to reach a minimum of a 5% increase (76 new members) by June 30, 2024.

This 5% number ensures that our membership is maintained -- anything above 5% will show membership growth. December reports were attached to the email distributed.

A shout-out to the Rotary Club of Clifford boasting 6 new members in December! What a strong finish to your year -- Congratulations! The Rotary Club of Saugeen Shores welcomes 3 new members and one new member in each of the Rotary Club of Grand Bend and the Rotary Club of Grand Blanc. A special thank you to these clubs for a strong finish to 2023!

A couple of additional notes Club Central Goals. First of all, regarding our Membership Goals in Club Central, some clubs (about 33) have not entered any goals as of yet. We know that clubs who do enter their goals tend to have strong membership in terms of retention and growth due to an increased club focus on club goals. The AG's and I are available to assist with entering your club's goals, so please don't hesitate to reach out and ask for help!

Membership Chairs. And, 29 clubs have assigned Membership Chairs. This also is an important aspect of club growth and helps in maintaining a focus on membership. Please consider filling this important position in your club executive if possible.

Membership Presentations. Seven clubs have booked a Membership Presentation from me at this time, and I have already had the pleasure of beginning these visits. I will happily join your meeting, in person or virtually, for a Membership Presentation / Discussion -- just ask!

The WASH Rotary Action Group was formed in 2007 by a group of Rotarians, recognized by Rotary International, and focused on WASH projects. Since then, it has facilitated many hundreds of projects – helping clubs find partners, ensuring sustainability, stressing the importance of a needs-driven approach, and developing best practices.

We encourage a holistic, integrated approach in which water is not the end in itself but is rather the means to a better life and livelihood in the community.

Most importantly, WASH Rotary Action Group links water and sanitation to improved hygiene, better health, and empowerment of the community – especially women, irrigation and agriculture, education and literacy and, ultimately, child mortality.

OUR CLUB PROJECTS HELPING MIGRANT WORKERS The Passport Club of District 6330 is happy to announce their newest service project, Backpacks for Migrant Workers.

North Lambton Community Health Care created the Migrant Worker Project to support the 700 migrant workers working in Sarnia and Lambton County. Our club is working with the Project Coordinator, Andrea Jones-Peper, by providing backpacks for newly arriving workers.

We will fill the backpacks with items requested by workers, such as toiletries. Our club will request a district grant to increase our impact.

2023 A GREAT SUCCESS – CUP OF KINDNESS The club chose to make a substantial impact on reducing food insecurity with a project aimed at raising funds for Food Banks in our individual communities.

Each member chose to fill a "Cup of Kindness" by filling a cup or two cups (or more) with coins, hopefully loonies and toonies, then donating the funds to their local food bank. Or to make donations directly to those in need. Donations should be rewarded with a tax receipt. The results are presented on the next page. With the success of this project, we are planning to keep it going.

Rotarians, friends, and relatives are encouraged to help members fill the cups in support of this excellent project!

CELEBRATING 35 YEARS OF ROTARY EXCELLENCE! Our club member, Rotarian Marilyn Buttery was invited to attend the Rotary Club of Strathroy's 35th anniversary. She and Rotarian Bev attended, and the club presented Marilyn with a Paul Harris Fellow for her community work.

Below is the post from Rotary Club of Strathroy – Last month, the Rotary Club of Strathroy marked a significant milestone: the 35th anniversary of the Charter of the Strathroy Rotary Club!

We were honoured to have had seven charter members present at the celebration: Janet Gibbons, Anne Wolf, John Asher, Tom Enright, Gord Hale, and Marilyn Buttery. They shared some stories from the early days of the club, reminiscing about the journey and impact we've made together over the years.

We were thrilled to present Marilyn Buttery with a Paul Harris Fellow for her incredible dedication and commitment to Rotary and the Strathroy community over the years!

First Rotary Club in Canada to Charter Women!

In addition to celebrating the 35th anniversary of the charter, The Strathroy Rotary Club proudly holds the title of being the first Rotary Club in Canada to charter with women!

This is an achievement that the club continues to celebrate and uphold with pride.

THE HUMAN LIBRARY

The Human Library® is, in the true sense of the word, a library of people. (humanlibrary.org) We host events where readers can borrow human beings serving as open books and have conversations they would not normally have access to. Every human book from our bookshelf represents a group in our society that is often subjected to prejudice, stigmatization, or discrimination because of their lifestyle, diagnosis, belief, disability, social status, ethnic origin etc. https://humanlibrary.org/about/

The origin of the Human Library The Human Library or “Menneskebiblioteket” as it is called in Danish, was created in Copenhagen in the spring of 2000 by Ronni Abergel and his brother Dany and colleagues Asma Mouna and Christoffer Erichsen.

The original event was open eight hours a day for four days straight and featured over fifty different titles. The broad selection of books provided readers with ample choice to challenge their stereotypes and so more than a thousand readers took advantage leaving books, librarians, organisers, and readers stunned at the reception and impact of the Human Library.

Our goals What is the Human Library?

The Human Library® is a global innovative and hands-on learning platform. We are embedded in high school to higher learning, medical training to civic engagement to better our understanding of diversity to help create more inclusive and cohesive communities across cultural, religious, social and ethnic differences.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training

The Human Library offers diversity, equity and inclusion training for companies that wish to better incorporate social understanding within their workforce, as well as grow their cultural awareness for deeper partnerships with clients.

Safe Framework

In our education visit, the Human Library works to create a safe framework for personal conversations that can help to challenge prejudice, get aim to help rid discrimination, prevent conflicts and contribute to greater human cohesion across social, religious and ethnic divisions.

Dialogue

We meet our goals by creating a special dialogue room, where taboo topics can be discussed openly and without condemnation. A place where people who would otherwise never talk find room for conversation.

The global support from the Rotary International network is the cornerstone upon which ShelterBox is built.

In April 2000, the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall, England adopted ShelterBox as its millennium project. Little did they know that it would become the largest Club project in the world, responding to disasters and conflict across the globe and providing emergency shelter to over one million people.

Rotary has been instrumental in our growth and is the cement that binds us together. Since ShelterBox was founded, we have grown from one club’s adopted project to Rotary International’s only Project Partner in disaster relief. Their global network has been key in our international growth.

At present, all ShelterBox affiliates have been set up by Rotarians or Rotaractors and the growth has been phenomenal.

In 2012, ShelterBox became Rotary International’s first Project Partner and remains the only disaster relief charity.

This agreement enables both organizations to collaborate more closely to bring relief and temporary shelter to survivors of disasters worldwide. The project partnership has built on both organization’s strengths in responding to disasters all over the world.

Mutual benefits for both organizations are enormous. We receive incredible support from Rotary and, equally, we are acting as a catalyst in encouraging more people the world over to become involved with their local Club.

ShelterBox can provide support as a club’s international project via speakers and supplemental material. Plus, ShelterBox offers multiple youth opportunities for culture exchange and leadership training.

A ShelterBox HERO is a Rotary Club that has committed to making an impact in worldwide disaster response by giving $1,000, $3,000, or $5,000 within the Rotary year.

HERO Clubs enable ShelterBox to have the resources and time to be ready when disaster strikes by allowing ShelterBox to purchase and pre-position aid in or near countries where we respond often, resulting in a more efficient and timely response.

There are three HERO levels: Bronze ($1,000); Silver ($3,000); and Gold ($5,000) Gary C.K. Huang, 2014-15 Rotary International President

To become a HERO, funds must be sent directly from the Club or a combination of gifts from individual members all sent in together. We ask that all gifts specifically state “HERO Gift” on the check or accompanying note. Gifts via the HERO program will be designated to Deployment Essentials, directly and quickly aiding families in need.

SHELTER KITS Our ShelterKits contain a selection of materials, including toolkits, ropes, fixings and heavy-duty tarpaulins, that can be used to make emergency shelters, repair damaged buildings and create the foundations for new homes.

We customize these kits to suit the location and the needs of each community. Sometimes they include corrugated iron to help make resilient roofing, locally sourced lumber, or even room dividers to help make a shelter, into a home – whatever it takes to help people recover from disaster.

RECOVE RY STARTS WITH SHELT ER Everyone deserves a place to call home. It is a human right and the first step towards recovery after disaster.

Shelter is so much more than just a roof. It’s the foundation for life, families and communities. It is a place to feel safe after days or weeks of fear. It offers protection from harsh weather, privacy, and helps to preserve dignity. It’s a space to heal from trauma.

Shelter and other essential items help people protect themselves from diseases like coronavirus and malaria.

Emergency shelter can also prevent communities from scattering. This means people stay connected and build resilience together.

When you don’t have to keep moving or worry about where to sleep at night, you can think about tomorrow. Items like tents, tarpaulins, tools, blankets, mosquito nets, cooking sets and water filters help to meet the most urgent needs, so you can start to earn a living, send children to school and rebuild your home.

Recovery doesn’t happen overnight, but a dry and warm place to sleep, prepare meals and be with your family is the vital first step.

A man decides to seek help from a psychiatrist due to his drinking habits…

As he settles down on the cozy couch in the psychiatrist’s office, the doctor kindly asks…

“Can you please share with me the reason behind your drinking?”

Taking a deep breath, the man replies, “Absolutely! Let me explain… ” “It all started when I made the decision to get married, and perhaps that wasn’t the best choice.”

“You see, I fell in love with a widow who had a grown daughter… ” “That daughter soon became my stepdaughter.”

Continuing the story, he adds, “Then, to make things more interesting, my own dad came to visit us… ” “Surprisingly, he fell head over heels for my stepdaughter and they ended up getting married, making my stepdaughter my stepmother.”

“Now, to make matters even more complicated, my wife and I had a son… ” “Naturally, he became the brother of my stepmother, since she’s the daughter of my dad’s new wife.”

“So, my stepdaughter, who is now my stepmother, became my son’s aunt… ” “Are you still following?”

The psychiatrist nods, intrigued by the intricate family dynamics.

The man continues, “But wait, there’s more!… ” “Since my new son is the brother of my stepmother, he’s also my uncle.”

“Adding to the complexity, my wife is now both my stepmother and my step-grandmother, thanks to her being the mother of my stepmother… ” “And, of course, let’s not forget that my stepmother herself is also my stepdaughter!”

The psychiatrist’s eyes widened, understanding the mind-boggling situation.

Then finally interrupts him, “I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to stop you right there!”

“Why?” asks the man.

The doctor replies…

“Because I need a drink.”
