IMPORTANT ROTARY INFORMATION 2018-19 RI PRESIDENTIAL THEME
International President, 2018-19 – Barry Rassin (Bahamas) May Message 2019 The people who know me best — my family — know that my passion for Rotary is boundless. They also know that I don't expect them to get involved in Rotary the way I have. It's a choice that's up to them. But I must admit, I can't help smiling when I see them making the right choice. At the end of the Toronto convention last year, my 12-year-old granddaughter turned to me and said, "I'm inspired to do something. What can I do?" Naturally, I did what any other Rotarian grandfather worth his salt would do: I asked her if there was an Interact club in her school. When she discovered there wasn't, she attempted to set one up. Unfortunately, her principal had other ideas, but we should not be deterred from helping Rotary youth programs whenever we can, because their value is beyond question. Take Rotary Youth Leadership Awards as one example. It transforms young people into more confident, focused individuals with a better understanding of the world around them — changes I was pleased to see in my 16-year-old grandson after he participated. My family is just the beginning. Everywhere I go, I meet people of all ages whose lives have been changed by our youth programs. They tell me how, 5 or 15 or 25 years ago, Rotary Youth Exchange taught them a new language or introduced them to a new culture. Their eyes light up when they talk about how New Generations Service Exchange helped them advance in their career, or about how membership in Rotaract first ignited their passion for giving back to the community.

Rotary's programs for young leaders extend our ideals of service, friendship, and leadership development beyond the doors of our clubs to hundreds of thousands of young people each year. And when we serve with and for those young people — as sponsors, project partners, and mentors — it brings out the best in us, and it brings out the best in Rotary. May is Youth Service Month, and there are many ways your Rotary club can celebrate. Sponsor an Interact club or Rotaract club, and your Rotary club will give young people in your community the tools they need to take action, become leaders, and gain a global perspective. Team up with your local Rotaract club for a service project. Get to know the participants in Rotary's programs for young leaders and share their stories with your community. You'll find more ideas in this year's Rotary Citation brochure, located under the Awards section of the Member Center at my.rotary.org. This month, let's Be the Inspiration to the young leaders in our communities by mentoring them, engaging them, and working side by side with them on meaningful projects. It's an investment in their future and in the world they will live in after we're gone. And it's work that will forever enrich their lives, and our own.

COUNCIL ON LEGISLATION UPDATE - 2019 …https://www.rotary.org/en/highlights-2019-rotary-council-legislation
The 2019 Council on Legislation may not have made as many dramatic changes as the Council three years ago did, but it made several decisions that will shape the future of Rotary. Among the most important, the Council elevated the status of Rotaract clubs. The change broadens the definition of membership in Rotary International to include Rotaract clubs. The change is intended to increase the support that Rotaract clubs receive from RI and to enhance their ability to serve. “We need to be an inspiration to our young partners, so they will continue doing the great service that they do,” said RI President Barry Rassin when he presented the measure. “This sends a strong message that they are truly our partners in service.” • • • • • •
In many ways, the Rotaract experience will not change. Rotary clubs will still charter and sponsor Rotaract clubs. Rotaract clubs will still have their own standard constitution and their own unique club experience. Members of a Rotaract club will not be called Rotarians. Rotaract clubs will not immediately pay dues or receive other benefits, such as the official magazine that Rotary members receive. The Board will determine a dues structure over time.
The measure simply expands the definition of membership in Rotary International to include both Rotary and Rotaract clubs.
Dues increase As for dues, the Council approved a modest increase of $1 a year for each of three years, beginning in 2020-21. The previous Council set dues for 2019-20 at $34 per half year. With the increase, the dues that clubs pay to RI per member will increase as shown below. The dues will not be raised again until a future Council votes to change it. On 30 April 2019, the Polio Endgame Strategy 2019-2023 was launched. The strategy will guide the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and its partners to overcome final hurdles to eradication and stay the course for a polio-free world. Read the statement. Polio News April 2019 is now online, covering all the happenings, news and the latest on polio eradication efforts around the world.
Summary of new viruses this week: Afghanistan—one wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) Pakistan—two WPV1 cases and 11 WPV1-positive environmental samples Nigeria—one circulating vaccine-derived type 2 (cVDPV2)-positive environmental sample Explaining Environmental Surveillance Eradicating polio is a particularly unforgiving task. While the virus remains anywhere in the world, it has the potential to spread around the globe to any vulnerable child or community. As the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) zeros in on polio, it becomes more important than ever that every last virus is found and rapidly stopped in its tracks. UPDATE FROM WASRAG Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group Rotary-USAID Partnership: Rotary has partnered with the United States Agency for International Development in Ghana, Madagascar, and Uganda to implement sustainable, long-term programs to improve water supplies, sanitation, and hygiene. Women and girls often bear primary responsibility for providing drinking water and sanitation to their families and are disproportionately affected when they have to travel to reach these services/facilities. Improved sanitation access is crucial to preserving the basic dignity of women and girls and reducing gender-based violence. Under USAID's Plan, water and sanitation programming will promote gender equality by increasing participation in leadership, consultation, education, and technical skills training. Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is another critical way that water and sanitation activities can address women’s and girls’ empowerment by alleviating a major constraint to their participation in education and public life. In the photo below, women in Antananarivo, Madagascar, use a laundry block built with funding from USAID under the Water and Development Alliance a partnership with The Coca-Cola Company. Access to this laundry block gives the community a reliable water supply and provides an avenue for these women to earn money by washing laundry for others. Photo credit: USAID/WADA.

Attending the District Learning Assembly were 13 members from our club - President Elect Allan, Rick and Sue Storie, Susan Elliott, Rose Saunders, Greg Schinkel, Kurtis McMahan, Reid Eyre, Pam Goossens, Josh Lipszyc, Jim Sillers, Mariann Timmers, Jessica Morrow. It was a really good day and Rose said she was glad she came! Rose is new to Rotary and is happy to learn more. There were two breakout times and each one offered four topic choices. Wheelchair Donation. In February, to celebrate Rotary's 114th birthday, the 6330 Passport Club donated a wheelchair to the Fundacion Monica Uribe por Amor. This is a charity dedicated to helping children in Colombia with spina bifida!! Our Rotary Friendship Exchange team had just returned from Colombia where they visited the Fundacion Monica Uribe por Amor.
Friendship Exchange. The Team Leader of our District 6330 Rotary Friendship Exchange was PAG Dr. Jim Sillers, International Director/Chair of the 6330 Passport Club. Jim led our small team to Colombia in early February. They had the unique opportunity to attend an International Project Fair and then to be hosted by District 4271.
