As someone who knows firsthand the great leadership potential of Rotaractors, I always look forward to World Rotaract Week, which we are celebrating from 8 to 14 March. Rotaractors are the focus of all three of my presidential conferences this year, and I was proud when, two years ago, the Council on Legislation voted to elevate Rotaract by including Rotaract clubs as members of Rotary International. Before that, the Council had already made dual membership possible, and shortly after, the Board of Directors decided to do away with Rotaract’s age limits.

But we are only just embarking on our journey together. Partnering effectively doesn’t happen by itself. It requires both sides to be open and to understand the value of cross-generational alliances. Louie De Real, a dual member of Rotaract and Rotary, explains.

Joint virtual meetings have helped Rotaractors introduce Rotarians to new ideas and tools, pioneering unique ways for clubs to collaborate. In the case of pandemic and disaster response, Rotaract clubs used social media to coordinate efforts, drive information, and fundraise, while Rotary clubs used their networks and resources to amplify support, provide logistics, and bring the goods and services to communities.

Rotaractors’ innovative virtual engagement and professional development activities inspired Rotarians to support and follow suit. The pandemic made Rotaract clubs realize that we can immediately connect and partner with Rotary clubs through virtual platforms. With constant collaboration, we realize that Rotary and Rotaract indeed complement each other — that we are part of a single organization with shared goals.

Both sides add value. Rotarians can be mentors and service partners to Rotaractors, while Rotaractors can demonstrate to Rotarians that difficult jobs can be simplified, and limitations can be surpassed through digital approaches. This synergy motivates Rotaractors to become future Rotarians: I joined Rotary because Rotarians gave me memorable membership experiences through inspirational moments of collaboration. I needed to be a Rotarian to inspire Rotaractors the same way, now and in the future.

That same synergy leads Rotarians to realize that while Rotaractors may have a different culture, we all share a common vision of uniting people to take action. Rotaract’s unique ways of doing things serve as inspiration for innovation, helping Rotary increase its ability to adapt to future challenges. Rotarians and Rotaractors will build the future together, so let’s start today.

I see no difference between a Rotary club and a Rotaract club, except perhaps for the average age!

Many Rotarians still view Rotaract as our youth organization, but I see it differently. For me, they are part of us, and they are like us. To be successful together, we need to have mutual respect — to see each other as equals.

Let’s see Rotaractors for who they really are: students and young leaders, but also successful managers and entrepreneurs who are capable of planning, organizing, and managing a Rotary institute — including breakout sessions in five languages — as they did in Berlin in 2014.

As we take this journey together, let’s remember the strengths of Rotary and Rotaract. And, as Louie says, let’s get started right away in building the future together. In doing so, we open endless opportunities for our organization.

ROTARY’S FOCUS ON WATER AND SANITATION How Rotary has changed to help people get clean water for longer than just a few years.

The lack of access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene resources is one of the world’s biggest health problems — and one of the hardest to solve.

Rotary has worked for decades to provide people with clean water by digging wells, laying pipes, providing filters, and installing sinks and toilets. But the biggest challenge has come after the hardware is installed. Too often, projects succeeded at first but eventually failed.

Across all kinds of organizations, the cumulative cost of failed water systems in sub-Saharan Africa alone is estimated at $1.2 billion to $1.5 billion, according to data compiled by the consulting firm Improve International.

Rotary projects used to focus on building wells, but Rotary started to focused on hygiene education projects, which have a greater impact.

Rotary International Rusted water pumps and dilapidated sanitation facilities are familiar sights in parts of Africa, South America, and South Asia — monuments to service projects that proved unsustainable.

A 2013 review by independent contractor Aguaconsult cited these kinds of issues in projects Rotary carried out, and the review included a focus on sustainability to help plan more effective projects.

That’s one factor in why Rotary has shifted its focus over the past several years to emphasize education, collaboration, and sustainability.

Past RI President Wilf Wilkerson will celebrate his 91st birthday on May 10, 2021

Rotarians are a hard-working, idealistic breed. We all care about people and believe in the values captured by The Four-Way Test. And many Rotarians perform incredible acts of generosity. Nevertheless, if I may go out on a limb here, I'll make a prediction: My brother, Wilf Wilkinson, is going to impress a lot of Rotarians as the new president of Rotary International by his intense devotion to Service Above Self.

Please don't think I'm boasting about my big brother. Wilf and I are Canadians, and everyone knows that most Canadians are rather shy when it comes to bragging about themselves. So, I'll introduce you to Wilf and let you make up your own mind.

But let's just say that the fellow who convinced the Canadian government to give more than US$180 million to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative might be someone special.

"It was Wilf's unstinting application of both persistence and patience that persuaded the government to release the money," says Past RI Director John Eberhard, chair of the Canadian Rotary Collaboration for International Development. "Wilf is a very persuasive person when faced with a cause he truly believes in. He spent a lot of time developing the relationships necessary to get the job done."

Rotary beginnings Wilf was new to the town of Trenton, Ontario (Rotary District 7070), when he was asked to join the Rotary club there in 1962. At his first club meeting, Wilf realized how lucky he was to have been drawn into a group whose ideals so exactly matched his own. One of Wilf's four sons, Peter, told me, "Dad's philosophy is 'to whom much is given, much is expected.'" Wilf sees those high expectations reflected in The Four-Way Test, which, according to Peter, "is something my dad really believes in."

In fact, Wilf believes in it so strongly that he and his partners created their own version of The Four-Way Test for their firm, Wilkinson and Company. The "Wilkinson Way," a list of 10 ethical principles, has hung in the reception room in the main office for decades. Wilf retired in 2001, but the Wilkinson Way is still displayed on the wall, a tribute to the rock-solid ethical foundation that enabled the firm to grow from a one-man office to three locations totaling more than 100 employees.

A firsthand observer of those principles at work is Ontario's premier, Dalton McGuinty. "I knew that Wilf was a tremendous leader long before I knew about his ascension within Rotary, or his professional success, or his many contributions to the community," he wrote to me recently. "And that is because I work closely with two of his sons: John, an elected member of our provincial parliament, and Peter, who is my chief of staff.

"Someone once said that if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, then you are a leader," the premier noted. "Well, judging from their sons' idealism, work ethic, and commitment to serving others, it's clear Wilf, and Joan, are great leaders."

Wilf's desire to serve has been the key to his becoming a leader in Rotary. To this day, he feels strongly that you should never seek a leadership position within the organization. Just do what you are asked, and opportunities to serve will come your way.

Wilf also never lets a day end without thanking as many people as he can, in writing. It's no surprise to me that, a mere five years after joining, Wilf became president of his Rotary club. In 1971, he became governor of District 707 (now 7070, covering parts of Ontario), and his rise in the leadership of Rotary International had begun. But he was more interested in changing lives, and he would soon get a chance he had never imagined to do just that.

A turning point Wilf vividly remembers his visit to southern India in 1982 to help Rotary clubs there promote a measles immunization program. At the time, the disease was killing millions of children on the subcontinent. At a club meeting, Wilf watched as a doctor cradled a crying baby in his arms and administered the vaccine. "It was a life-changing experience," Wilf remembered recently. "I saw the tremendous needs, and the dedication of Rotarians there to solve those needs."

Ken Hobbs, a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Whitby, Ontario., and a doctor who made it his goal to eliminate measles in India, recalls how my brother got involved: "In 1980, Wilf and several other past district governors in Ontario approached me to join [the] measles committee. Wilf handled the financial part of the project. He also helped persuade the Indian government to provide cold-storage areas for the vaccine. And he got the Canadian government to pay to ship the vaccine to India from Rahway, New Jersey."

P.V. "Puru" Purushothaman, past governor of District 3230 (India), remembers Wilf's trip well.

"The Salem group of Rotary clubs had vaccinated 150,000 children against measles in 45 days," Puru told me. "When he landed in Salem, they saw a friendly, bright young Rotarian with a captivating smile, which made it easy for people from all walks of life to approach him."

As he arrived in Salem in the state of Tamil Nadu, a surprised Wilf was greeted by fireworks, rockets, and a festival. "The news of his arrival traveled fast," Puru remembers. "When he was to visit a remote village to vaccinate children, in the absence of a communication system, the village people thought of a bright idea: to fire rockets and firecrackers as he passed a certain road crossing. When Wilf arrived at the village, it was a festive occasion, with children flocking around him and wanting to shake hands with him. Wilf was touched."

Even before the measles project was over, Wilf had been tapped to apply his skills to another need. In 1986, Gerry Wooll, then chair of the Canada PolioPlus Committee and past RI treasurer, named him vice chair and treasurer of the PolioPlus program in Canada. The task was daunting: to raise C$10 million from Rotarians across Canada. Less than three years later, they had raised $12 million, and based on that success, he was asked to head up the Canadian advocacy effort that has secured more than US$180 million for PolioPlus from the Canadian government.

UPDATE ON POLIO ERADICATION Week of February 23, 2021 At February 17, there had been no new cases of polio in either Afghanistan or Pakistan during the previous week. Afghanistan has one case at this point in 2021. Pakistan has had no cases since November 23.

As efforts to eradicate polio are intensified, declining immunity against polio in populations in certain areas of the country continues to be one of the biggest challenges. A key reason for this has been either the complete lack of access or extreme difficulty in reaching certain areas with regular routine or supplementary polio vaccination for extended periods of time.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further fuelled a significant decline in immunity rates due to a 6-month pause in vaccinations between February and July 2020. This has contributed towards a rise in the number of cases and has exacerbated existing disruptions to critical immunizations caused by active conflict and bans on polio campaigns.

To date, there are no new cases reported in 2021.

And the total number of wild polio cases remains at 56 in 2020. The polio programme remains committed to finishing the job and has demonstrated its ability to adapt and rise to any challenge by safely delivering polio immunization campaigns in 2020 despite the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic.

As the national immunization campaign kicks off, over 65 000 heroic polio health workers are once again ready to vaccinate children everywhere, adhering to strict COVID-19 precautionary measures and protocols. These measures include wearing a mask, using hand sanitizer, delivering vaccine through the ‘no-touch' method and maintaining a safe distance during the vaccination.

As the polio programme gears up to rapidly boost immunity against polio through multiple upcoming campaigns, we urge parents and caregivers to ensure that all children under 5 years of age receive vaccinations during every campaign. Polio vaccines are safe and have also been strongly endorsed by national and global Islamic scholars, including the ulama. Vaccinating every child through multiple doses of the polio vaccine is the only way to stop the poliovirus currently in circulation across the country.

The programme remains concerned that approximately 3.3 million children across the country could be missed out due to a ban on door-to-door vaccinations in certain parts of the country. Unimpeded access to reach children with critical vaccinations and other essential services is the only way to stop polio and other outbreaks.

The Government, WHO, UNICEF and health partners are urgently calling for a combined effort to ensure safe access to vaccinate all children in difficult and conflict-prone areas. Every Afghan has role to play in ending polio in Afghanistan.

Currently, Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only 2 polio-endemic countries in the world.

Situated about 220 Kilometers west of Karachi, Mirpur Khas district in Sindh province was inundated with floodwater. In September this year it rained more than 400 millimetres which is double the yearly average rainfall; resulting in massive flooding across the district. Mirpur Khas is home to more than 1.5 million residents, and over 70 per cent of them reside in rural areas.

“At least 22 union councils were completely inundated with water and 600,000 people were either displaced or became inaccessible to us. A very large number had to be put in camps while numerous people had to live in makeshift housing on the sides of the roads,” said Abdul Wahid Sheikh, Commissioner of Mirpur Khas while talking about the way the floods wreaked havoc in the district.

“We faced a huge challenge to get polio drops to children in inaccessible areas. Also, we had many refusals because of demands related to flood relief,” Abdul continued while talking about the National Immunisation campaign.

The Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI), Pakistan and its frontline workers faced the challenge of inaccessibility head on and defied all odds in order to reach every child with essential polio vaccines during the National Immunization Week in September. The valiant lady health workers braved water, walked and swam through it and also used boats to reach children whose houses looked unreachable because of being submerged in water due to torrential rains.

Mud, stagnant water and vaccination “It was extremely difficult. I tried to go through the water the first day and got stuck and struggled to make my way back. I tried again the second day, but almost drowned!

However, as I was determined to vaccinate vulnerable children, on the third day I finally made it across the water and vaccinated about 30 children in this village,” said Amina, a Lady Health Worker who made her way to village Balejo Kum in Taluka Tando Jan Mohammad, some 80 kilometres from Mirpur Khas city despite flood water.

Meanwhile in Taluka Sindhri, water is still stagnant and makes it difficult for health workers to access villages. Not only it is difficult to walk through the water, but the slippery mud also makes it almost impossible to navigate steadily.

This, however, did not stop frontline workers Hawa and Sita to pass through it to reach four children who had missed the polio vaccine.

When is a tree like a Rotarian? All the time Trees are connected through their root systems – and helping neighbors in times of need is the rule. Sound familiar?

By Peter Wohlleben When I began my professional career as a forester, I knew as much about the hidden life of trees as a butcher knows about the emotional life of animals. Because it was my job to look at hundreds of trees every day – spruce, beeches, oaks, and pines – to assess their suitability for the lumber mill and their market value, my appreciation of trees was limited to a narrow point of view.

About 20 years ago, as I talked with the many visitors to the forest that I manage – for the tiny village of Hümmel in the Eifel Mountains in western Germany – my perspective began to change. Those visitors were enchanted by crooked, gnarled trees I would previously have dismissed because of their low commercial value.

Walking with my visitors, I learned to pay attention to more than just the quality of the trees’ trunks. I began to notice bizarre root shapes, peculiar growth patterns, and mossy cushions on bark. My love of nature was reignited. Suddenly life as a forester became exciting once again.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable.

In 2019, there were an estimated 229 million cases of malaria worldwide.

The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 409,000 in 2019.

Children aged under 5 years are the most vulnerable group affected by malaria; In 2019, they accounted for 67 percent (274,000 of all malaria deaths worldwide.

The WHO African Region carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2019, the region was home to 94 percent of malaria cases and deaths.

Total funding for malaria control and elimination reached an estimated USD $3 billion in 2019.

Contributions from governments of endemic countries amounted to USD $900 million, representing 31 percent of total funding.

Eleven years ago, Malaria Partners International was founded by Rotary members with a focus on advocacy within the Rotary community, and on the development of projects and large-scale malaria prevention programs.

Our name has changed but our mission remains steadfast: To ignite a Rotary Campaign for the Global Eradication of Malaria.

The Rotary Foundation (Canada) is an official associate foundation of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

Dear Rotarians, Posted by K.R. Ravindran 2020-21 Trustee Chair, The Rotary Foundation This has perhaps been the most turbulent year of this generation — we faced a global health crisis, natural disasters, and economic turmoil all at the same time and the whole world was affected. Through it all, Rotary has stood tall. We have heard stories of some amazing acts of generosity and personal acts of service by clubs, Rotarians, and Rotaractors.

The Rotary Foundation has been proud to support our members’ efforts in serving their communities. Since March 2020, we awarded $32 million in global and disaster response grants for projects related to COVID-19. In fact, we awarded 1,359 global grants worth $95.6 million in 2019-20. Compare that to 2013-14, when global grants were first introduced, when we awarded 868 global grants worth $47.3 million. That’s a lot of growth! All over the world, Foundation grants are supporting projects that demonstrate Rotary’s impact and reach...

Because the high demand for global grants is far exceeding and outpacing the growth in Annual Fund contributions, the World Fund is depleted well before each Rotary year ends and we find ourselves in a position where we cannot fund all the global grant requests we receive.

This Rotary year, we’ve taken several cost-saving measures in an effort to fund more global grants. For example, the Trustees and the Board recently transferred $15 million from the Foundation’s operating reserves and Rotary International’s budget surplus to the World Fund. In total, nearly an additional $20 million is being

made available this year, but unfortunately, even that is not enough to fulfill the applications that are expected to be submitted.

A financial shortfall is expected this year and likely in the coming years because of the growing success of our global grant program.

Therefore, the Trustees have approved policy changes, effective 1 July 2021, that will strengthen the Foundation’s ability to fund more global grants.

1. District Designated Fund (DDF) contributions transferred to PolioPlus will be matched at 50%.

DDF contributions transferred to PolioPlus will be matched at 50% instead of 100% by the World Fund before being matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Gates Foundation will continue matching 2-to-1 every dollar that Rotary commits to polio eradication, up to $50 million per year.

It’s vital that we continue to raise $50 million a year for polio eradication and raise awareness by keeping it a top priority for our clubs, our communities, and our government officials.

2. The World Fund match of DDF will be reduced from 100% to 80% when being used for global grants.

Instead of DDF applied to global grants receiving a 100% match from the World Fund, the global grants match will decrease to 80%. For the 2020-21 Rotary year, as long as funds remain available, DDF will continue to be matched at 100% for applications submitted by 31 May and approved by 30 June. Applications that are not approved this Rotary year will need to be resubmitted with adjusted financing.

3. Five percent of the current year’s Annual Fund-SHARE contributions will be taken equally from the World Fund and DDF to help fund operating expenses.

Currently, Annual Fund-SHARE contributions are split equally between the World Fund and DDF, with 5% of the total SHARE contributions being deducted only from the World Fund to help pay for operating expenses.

Beginning 1 July, all Annual Fund-SHARE contributions will first have 5% directed to operating expenses and the remaining will then be split equally between the World Fund and DDF. For example, a $100 contribution will generate $5 for operating expenses and the remaining $95 will be divided equally, with $47.50 for DDF and $47.50 for the World Fund.

4. The ability to roll over unused DDF will be limited to five years. At the end of each Rotary year, DDF that has been held for more than five years will be applied at the district’s discretion to PolioPlus, area of focus Endowment funds, the general Endowment Fund (including the Rotary Peace Centers), the Disaster Response Fund, or the World Fund. The first DDF rollover redirection will take place 1 July 2026.

Annual Fund donors give with the expectation that their contributions will be used promptly to help communities, but the amount of rollover DDF each year remains high. On 1 July 2020, $48.8 million was carried into the current Rotary year. Let’s put these funds to use to increase the impact we make through our programs.

Starting on 1 July 2026, districts can choose how to apply any rollover funds remaining from 2020-21 as outlined above. If a district doesn’t advise the Foundation about how to direct those funds, the rollover DDF will automatically be directed to the World Fund.

Balancing financial resources with program demands is challenging for any nonprofit, and adjustments and difficult decisions are sometimes necessary to cope with the changing situation.

The District 6330 Passport Club is a new format of Rotary Club; one where the structure better suits the lives of those who maybe can’t meet on a weekly basis or make significant financial contributions but who still have a passion for what Rotary does best; doing good.

To facilitate this, the 6330 Passport Club conducts business electronically and offers several in-person opportunities per year. In lieu of weekly meetings, members are encouraged to engage in humanitarian service, however that works best for them!

The founding principle is simple: Make Rotary fit your life!

The Rotary District 6330 Passport Club members are full Rotary members, with the same privileges and rights as Rotarians who are members of traditional clubs.
