IMPORTANT ROTARY INFORMATION 2019-20 RI PRESIDENTIAL THEME
International President, 2019-20 – Mark Maloney RC of Decatur, Alabama, USA March message 2020 March is the month we celebrate Rotaract — and this has been quite a year for our young partners in service. Last spring, the Council on Legislation elevated Rotaract in our constitution: Rotary International is now the association of both Rotary clubs and Rotaract clubs. Then in October, the Rotary Board of Directors eliminated the artificial Rotaract age limit and took other steps to break down barriers that were preventing Rotaract from growing in some parts of the world. These steps were long overdue, because Rotaract is a vision of what Rotary must become. Not only do we need to open our doors to our young colleagues, but we also have to open our ears and minds to the Rotary experience they find most engaging. That is one of the best ways we will meaningfully grow Rotary. When I say grow Rotary, I mean it in many ways. We need to grow our service and to grow the impact of our projects. Most importantly, however, we need to grow our membership, so that we can achieve more. Rotaractors provide this opportunity, not only because they can transition to Rotary at the time that is right for them, but also because they understand what it will take to attract others like them. Business as usual will not work for us anymore. Bringing in more members to replace the ones we lose is not the answer. It is like pouring more water into a bucket full of holes. We need to address the root causes of

member loss in many parts of the world: member engagement that is not what it should be, and our member demographic that skews steadily older. It is time to make some fundamental changes. We already know what the barriers are to an engaged and diverse membership. It is time to act on what we know: creating new membership models, opening new paths to Rotary membership, and building new Rotary and Rotaract clubs where the existing clubs do not meet a current need. New club models represent an opportunity to connect with a more diverse group of individuals — particularly those who are unable or unwilling to join our traditional clubs. While new club models have been emerging for some time, it is up to district governors to make them a reality. In January at the International Assembly, our incoming district governors took part in an exercise called Build Your Own Club Model. It was a wonderful experience that put them in the right frame of mind for the work ahead. Ultimately, however, it will be up to Rotaractors and young Rotarians to create new club models that are most meaningful to the next generation. We may think we know what young people want from Rotary clubs in the future, but I am confident that what young people say will surprise us. It will be our job to support their innovation, for it will help us grow Rotary as Rotary Connects the World. Our mission is to empower women in the rural areas of developing countries. We do so by providing the family with Rotary rolling water barrels, thus reducing time and effort spent carrying water.
Roll Out The Barrel began in the UK in 2006 by providing Rotary rolling water barrels to needy families. Initially to Africa, we now serve many developing and war-torn countries, including those recovering from hurricanes, such as Haiti and the Philippines. In 2017, ROTB opened a branch in the United States, followed in 2018 by Canada. Click here for a short video with more information.

UPDATE ON POLIO ERADICATION

Gadap Town is home to many informal doctors who are not sufficiently trained to provide basic health services to the community. Often, they put their patients at risk. Before the creation of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU), most people had no choice but to rely on them for basic healthcare. Now, the PolioPlus programme has helped turn the once abandoned Jannat Gul Hospital into a vibrant health centre. The hospital was renovated in record time and was inaugurated by the Minister of Health for Sindh Dr.

The new ERU hosts essential immunization services for children, including polio vaccination. The site also houses equipment to keep vaccines cold and ready for use. Outside, a lawn with play equipment has been set up. Gadap is one of Pakistan’s largest slums, and the provision of a rare child-friendly environment as part of the health facility is helping to build community trust and acceptance of the polio eradication programme.
One room is for use by children suffering Acute Flaccid Paralysis and is also used to monitor any child having a reaction to immunization. The room is managed by a Government Medical Officer, supported by WHO provincial and federal monitors during polio vaccination campaigns. A multipurpose room is used for trainings and planning before and during polio vaccination campaigns. The ERU also hoss a daa support scenter that allows staff to relay live updates on polio campaign performance to the Sindh Emergency Operations Centre.

Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced on 22 January that their long-term fundraising partnership, which generates up to $150 million annually for polio eradication, will continue. Under the agreement, Rotary is committed to raising $50 million a year over the next three years, and each dollar will be matched with an additional two dollars by the Gates Foundation. In a video address at the 2020 Rotary International Assembly in San Diego, California, U.S.A., Bill Gates told incoming district governors that the partnership with Rotary needs to continue. International delegation of Rotary leaders visits Pakistan to support polio eradication Earlier this month, a delegation of Rotary International leaders from around the world traveled to Pakistan to meet with government officials to discuss recent challenges in the effort to end polio there. The government leaders praised Rotary for its prominent role in polio eradication and for providing vital financial support to Pakistan and other countries that are threatened by polio. The Rotary delegation included Holger Knaack, 2020-21 Rotary International president; K.R. Ravindran, 2020-21 trustee chair of The Rotary Foundation; and Michael K. McGovern, chair of Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee. The group was accompanied by incoming Rotary Foundation Trustee Aziz Memon, the chair of Rotary’s Pakistan National PolioPlus Committee. PASTOR KOKU LOKU of Togo, Africa, tells Bradley Sunrise Rotarians about the benefits of the deep well now serving the people of Akoumape, Togo, and beyond, thanks to a donation from Sunrise Rotary a number of years ago. Around six years ago, Bradley Sunrise Rotary started pooling their resources to take their philanthropic operation global. With around $13,000 in donations, they secured two other donations from partnering clubs in Mississippi and a matching grant from Rotary International, giving Pastor Koku Loku around $116,000 to establish a well for a village of Togo, Africa. Recently, Loku came back to Bradley Sunrise Rotary to share what their donation has done for the village and the 60,000-plus children under the care of Compassion International in Togo, too. “It was not easy,” Loku said. “We had many obstacles … We had to dig the well 719 feet deep.”

Part of what made this and other projects difficult was the lack of reliability with certain services. He said in the process of installing a septic tank for the village and a generator for a much-needed hospital, in addition to the deep well, many people who he hired to help didn’t show up. He said the tests for local water sources were also unreliable, so they went the extra mile to make sure they have clean water. Now, that clean water can act as a source of income, too. Loku said they are able to sell some of the water that is now accessible with the well to boost their income, which goes right back to helping children. The donation has not only helped them establish clean water and a valuable source of income, but it has also brought water for their crops. Okra, he said, is among one of their favorite crops to grow. A fish farm, as well, has been the result of Rotarians’ donations. “It is worth it. These children are so special, and when you see the look on their face, it is worth it,” he said.
It's Not All About Flushing Donate A Loo Schools Project, founded by Helene Bramwell of the Rotary Club of Johannesburg New Dawn, aims to provide safe, reliable, and decent sanitation as a means to restore dignity to school children. Their solution is a dry sanitation option as they feel flushing toilets with drinking quality water is unwise and unsustainable. Our club member Pam at a meeting with Rotary Club Zagreb, Croatia. Rotary Club Zagreb is the club that hosted Pam on her Rotary Youth Exchange 18 years ago when she went to Croatia for the first time. 6330 Passport had a friendship exchange with Croatia and know many of these Rotarians personally.
Stoves for El Salvador 6330 Passport members reached out on social media during a recent projects trip to El Salvador to secure stoves for a village in El Salvador. We were in the village as a Rotary project to help present stoves to much of the village but found that there were additional families in need. The stoves are made locally and cost approximately $70.00 US. The stoves use less wood than open fire burning and are safer for the family. We delivered 40 stoves that day and raised funds for 53 more with the help of the local mayor, the Rotary Club of Noroeste, and Clubs in District 6990 (Florida), 7040 (Ontario/NY) and friends and family of 6330 Passport. Do you have a new project in mind for this Rotary Year? Due to cancelled grants, there is $6,750 USD available for additional grants for projects which can be completed by May 31. Please submit your proposal ASAP in the Grants Module. Looking forward to the 20-21 Rotary year, please get the Club MOU signed and submitted, and at least 2 Club members qualified for District Grants by completing the online course and quiz.
