March Message 2019 One of the things I appreciate most about serving as president of Rotary International is the people I get to meet.

Much of my time is spent traveling and visiting Rotary clubs around the world. A Rotarian welcome is something quite special. But let me tell you, there's nothing so warm as the welcomes that have been rolled out for me by Rotaractors. These are young people who are committed to Rotary ideals, who are pouring their hearts into service, and who, in the process, don't forget to have fun.

One of the highlights of my recent travels was a trip to Ghana, where I visited a district that boasts some 60 Rotaract clubs. They aren't satisfied with that number, though — in fact, they're excited about a plan to double it. They'll do it, too.

Rotaractors are vaccinating children against polio. They're donating blood where the supply is dangerously low.

They're providing handwashing facilities to schools where children previously had no way to get clean. In short, they're all about transformational service: carrying out projects that make a real difference in their communities.

In Nakivale, Uganda, one special Rotaract club is making a difference in its community — which happens to be a refugee settlement. These young leaders are turning what others might see as disadvantages into opportunities for service, building community and opening up new possibilities to those who are most in need of them.

In Turkey, Rotaractors are visiting children in the hospital every Wednesday to lift their spirits by playing games with them. They also are mentoring new students at their university and teaching them leadership skills.

Rotaractors are blazing the path for Rotary to be more relevant in this new century of service. And World Rotaract Week, which we're celebrating 11-17 March, is the perfect opportunity to get to know your local Rotaractors and talk to them about how your clubs can work together.

If your Rotary club doesn't already sponsor a Rotaract club, know that you don't need to be near a college or university to do it: Community-based Rotaract clubs are a great option. And remember that Rotaractors are part of the Rotary family.

When Rotaractors are ready to leave their Rotaract club, we don't want them to leave that Rotary family behind.

I'm asking all Rotarians to help them make the transition into a Rotary club or to start a new one: I'm happy to charter as many new clubs as we need to give everyone a place where they feel at home while making the world a little better. Service should be fun, it should be inspirational, and it should be open to all.

If there's one thing Rotary has always excelled at, it's diversity. In the past, that often meant diversity of profession, nationality, and outlook. We've made great strides when it comes to diversity of age and gender, and as we welcome more Rotaractors into our organization, we'll become even stronger.

Rotary is powerful. Together with Rotaract, it is unstoppable. Working side by side, we have the potential to Be the Inspiration in every part of society, to every person we meet.

ABCs OF ROTARY World Community Service World Community Service (WCS) is the Rotary program by which a club or district in one country provides humanitarian assistance to a club in another country. Typically, the aid goes to a developing community where the Rotary project will help raise the standard of living and the quality of life. The ultimate object of World Community Service is to build goodwill and understanding among peoples of the world.

Every Rotary club is urged to undertake a new World Community Service project each year.

Find a real need, a project description and cooperating club in a developing area. The job then is to "go to work" to complete the project, and at the same time build bridges of friendship and world understanding.

What Global Grants support Global grants can fund: • • •

Humanitarian projects Scholarships for graduate-level academic studies Vocational training teams, which are groups of professionals who travel abroad either to teach local professionals about their field or to learn more about it themselves

How they’re funded The minimum budget for a global grant project is $30,000. The Foundation’s World Fund provides a minimum of $15,000 and maximum of $200,000. Clubs and districts contribute District Designated Funds (DDF) and/or cash contributions that the World Fund matches. DDF is matched 100 percent and cash is matched at 50 percent.

Qualification Both the district or club in the country where the activity is carried out and the international partner district or club must first become qualified before applying for a global grant. UPDATE ON POLIO ERADICATION

In every corner of the world, women in Rotary are leading the charge to make polio history. They are fundraisers, volunteers, polio survivors, and advocates from all backgrounds and walks of life with one thing in

common: working to ensure that no child ever has to suffer the devastating and paralyzing effects of polio. In honor of International Women's Day, we highlight the work of 5 of the many women in Rotary leading the way in the fight to end polio.

Judith Diment Diment, of the Rotary Club of Maidenhead Thames, England, leads Rotary’s UK advocacy efforts, and is a passionate fundraiser and International PolioPlus Committee member.

In 2017, she led Rotary’s efforts to create champions for polio eradication among UK political leaders, resulting in the country committing an additional £100 million to the global initiative.

“On International Women’s’ Day, I salute the frontline women health workers in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria for their dedication and commitment to ensure that all children under five are vaccinated, often risking their lives on a daily basis.” Hear more from Diment here.

Ijeoma Pearl Okoro Ijeoma Pearl Okoro is a member of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, where she directs End Polio Now activities throughout sub-Saharan Africa. She leads efforts to build awareness around the fight to eliminate polio from Nigeria and engages other Rotary members and the public through events and promotional endeavors.

Through a range of activities, like government advocacy, celebrity engagement, and fundraising, Okoro’s leadership helps ensure that polio eradication is a priority and every child is protected from the disease.

Tayyaba Gul A member of the Rotary Club of Islamabad (Metropolitan), Pakistan, Gul runs a Rotary-funded health center in Nowshera, working with teams of female vaccinators help reach neighborhoods of ethnic Afghan refugees displaced by conflict in tribal border regions.

Gul’s teams use cellphones for daily data reporting on immunization progress, which helps health organizations analyze data and report back in real time.

“I just contribute my part as a Rotarian. I’m happy to work in remote areas, especially with women, motivating them to play their role in society,” Gul says.

Ann Lee Hussey Ann Lee Hussey has led Rotary volunteers on nearly 30 trips to places like Pakistan and Nigeria to immunize kids against polio, the disease that has affected her since she was 17 months old.

A member of the Portland Sunrise Rotary Club, Maine, USA, she is an outspoken advocate for polio eradication and immunization in general and has testified at state legislative hearings in Maine on the importance of vaccination.

In January, Hussey spoke of her experience as a polio survivor and her Rotary service at Rotary’s International Assembly, highlighting the role of frontline polio workers: Ann Lee Hussey

Marie-Irène Richmond-Ahoua Richmond-Ahoua joined the Rotary Club of Abidjan-Biétry, Côte d’Ivoire, in 1991, making her one of the first female Rotarians in Africa.

When a general canceled a national immunization day during a 1999 coup in her country, Richmond-Ahoua appealed directly to the general’s family, pleading that innocent children had nothing to do with the war. Shortly afterward, the general granted her request and presided over the opening of the rescheduled immunization day.

UPDATE FROM WASRAG WATER AND SANITATION – ROTARY ACTION GROUP

HANWASH in Haiti HANWASH stands for Haiti National Clean Water, Sanitation and Health Strategy: a collaborative, national initiative by Rotary District 7020, The Rotary Foundation and DINEPA (The Haitian Government’s National Water and Sanitation Agency), partnering with other NGO’s such as Haiti Outreach and Pure Water for the World, committed to providing thoughtfully managed and sustainable clean water and sanitation to all the citizens of Haiti, along with the associated health, community and economic benefits.

HANWASH is happy to announce significant progress on all fronts. The HANWASH Steering Committee continues to meet weekly and now a number of Subcommittees including the Projects and Technical Subcommittee and Measurement Evaluation and Learning Subcommittee are meeting regularly also.

HANWASH continues its regular dialogue with Haitian Government’s WASH Agency DINEPA and is working hand in hand with them on the four pilot projects they proposed in the Communes of Cavaillon, Ferrier, Trou du Nord and Croix des Bouquets.

The HANWASH team has the goal of creating access to safely managed water for everyone in Haiti. To accomplish this task requires establishing a framework of Accountability, Responsibility and Transparency that works to enrol partners and create technically sound, revenue positive, safely managed infrastructure.

HANWASH STARTS WORK ON FOUR PILOT PROJECTS

The first steps in achieving this have been to engage Haiti Outreach to create a FRAPE (defined below) survey and Commune Action Plans (CAP) for each of the 4 target communes By answering the following questions these CAPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s will serve as guidance for the creation of a set of projects to be implemented that systematically increase access with each intervention.

At the beginning of October, Haiti Outreach has begun the initial infrastructure FRAPE survey in the commune of Cavaillon. This is being done in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Les Cayes, DINEPA, the elected officials of the commune (Mayor and Administrative Council) and the local population.

The FRAPE survey is documenting the all water points (wells, springs, fountains, water systems) within the commune along with their flow rates and approximately 13 water quality parameters. The FRAPE survey in Cavaillon should be complete in mid-late November with the CAP following by mid-December.

The other FRAPE surveys for the communes of Ferrier, Terre Neuve and Croix des Bouquets should begin in the next month or two with the goal of all CAP’s being complete in January.

Each CAP will list a set of proposed interventions that the stakeholders are aligned upon: • • •

Water points/systems needing to be made potable Water points/systems needing repair/rehabilitation Areas where new water infrastructure needs to be created

For each intervention, the HANWASH team will ensure that the infrastructure is technically sound, safely managed and revenue positive.

Funding for the four pilots will be achieved through a combination of phased Global Grants from the Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Club of Les Cayes which will be the local partner for the first two grants for the Cavaillon Commune.

Right now we are looking for Rotarians, NGO member and volunteers with the following skillsets. Some knowledge of the WASH sector and/or Haiti would be useful but not essential: • • • •

Graphic Artist/Designer to assist with the design and production of marketing material.

Website designer/manager to maintain and update our existing website www.hanwash.org Social Media expert to get our story onto the appropriate social media platforms e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.

We are also looking for District Champions to partner with us on the Global Grants for the four pilot projects.

WORLD WATER DAY March 22, 2019 What is World Water Day? World Water is fast approaching!

Your club and district can help celebrate World Water Day. It focuses on the approximately 1.8 billion people worldwide who must rely on water contaminated with feces, putting them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid, polio and other waterborne diseases.

The UN's Sustainable Development Goals, launched in 2015, include a target to ensure everyone has access to safe water by 2030, making water a key issue in the fight to eradicate extreme poverty.

In 1993, the UN General Assembly designated March 22nd as World Water Day. It is now a globally recognized event.
