IMPORTANT ROTARY INFORMATION 2019-20 RI PRESIDENTIAL THEME

International President, 2019-20 – Mark Maloney RC of Decatur, Alabama, USA June message 2020 My Rotary journey began 40 years ago when I joined the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, at the age of 25, and it has brought my family and me many unforgettable moments. But nothing could have prepared me for connecting with the world as president of Rotary International. My individual Rotary journey has become a shared Rotary journey with each of you. All of the incredible people Gay and I met this year — Rotarians, Rotaractors, and the extended family of Rotary — will be an inspiration for the rest of our lives. We visited clubs and projects from Uruguay to Ukraine, from Nigeria to New Zealand, and beyond. We were privileged to crisscross the globe, circumnavigating it twice and moving back and forth between the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Each country and each stop held its own Rotary magic. While in Zimbabwe in March, we participated in a medical vocational training team mission with Rotarians from India, providing health, hope, and life itself to the thousands who came for treatment. We also felt the energy of more than 300 young people at a Rotary Youth Symposium in Harare. What a thrill it was to be with these young people! This year Rotary launched our new Action Plan, and I trust each club is putting that plan to use. And I have been energized by the efforts to embrace the priorities I set for this Rotary year: engaging families, providing leadership opportunities for all ages, celebrating our history with the United Nations in its 75th year, and, most significantly, growing Rotary.

As COVID-19 reached around the globe, we found ourselves in a world transformed. We have been forced to connect in ways we could never have imagined, testing our ability to adapt. We have made tough decisions, including canceling club meetings, district conferences, presidential conferences, and, much to our regret, the 2020 Rotary International Convention in Honolulu. Together everyone is placing the public good and welfare first, despite the loss of meetings, events, and experiences that had been planned for years. As we looked forward to the Rotary Convention in Honolulu, we learned about the aloha spirit. Our Rotary friends in Hawaii showed us that "aloha" means mutual regard and affection. It extends warmth and caring with no expectation of anything in return. The spirit of aloha applies wherever in the world we may live. As Rotarians, Rotaractors, and members of the family of Rotary, we are connected, and as aloha has been defined to me: Our connection to one another is based upon mutual respect for our differences as well as our appreciation for what we have in common. Community is the sum of individuals — individuals who have concern for one another, who care, share, and take responsibility. As I have witnessed the members of the Rotary community act to care for humanity amid the coronavirus pandemic, I have seen the aloha of Rotary. We are indeed people of action. Every day, but particularly during this pandemic, the Rotary community has demonstrated its aloha spirit. It is a gift to be shared, and we are each a steward of this gift of Rotary. Gay and I have been amazed, inspired, and humbled by all of you within the family of Rotary. Indeed, I would say that the last part of our shared Rotary year was transformational. We found new ways to make the lives of others better, new ways to move forward together. And, together, we will continue to grow Rotary so that we may increase our gift of Rotary to our local and global communities. Gay and I will always remember and treasure our year with you, our shared journey, as Rotary Connects the World! On very rare occasions, if a population is seriously under-immunized, there are enough susceptible children for the excreted vaccine-derived polioviruses to begin circulating in the community. If the vaccine-virus is able to circulate for a prolonged period of time uninterrupted, it can mutate and, over the course of 12-18 months, reacquire neurovirulence. These viruses are called circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses (cVDPV). The lower the population immunity, the longer these viruses survive. The longer they survive, the more they replicate, change, and exchange genetic material with other enteroviruses as they spread through a community. If a population is fully immunized against polio, it will be protected against the spread of both wild and vaccine strains of poliovirus. Episodes of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus are rare. Over the past ten years – a period during which more than 10 billion doses of oral polio vaccine were given worldwide – cVDPV outbreaks resulted in fewer than 800 cases cases. In the same period, in the absence of vaccination with OPV, more than 6.5 million children would have been paralysed by wild poliovirus.

COVID-19 WE CAN SUPPORT THE ROTARY CLUB OF STRATFORD WITH THEIR COVID-19 MASK PROJECT Click this link for more information: https://www.rotarystratford.com/SitePage/masks

Wear the Mask. Let’s finish the Task. As you know, the COVID-19 situation is fluid. Public health officials have asked Canadians to limit gatherings in an effort to slow the spread of the disease. The on-going good health of all our members, their families and our community members on both sides of the border is our primary concern. Please practise Social Distancing – person to person contact of any kind should be avoided. Maintain two meters (six feet) between yourself and others to avoid contamination. Continue good hygiene - wash your hands often and thoroughly.

Passport Clubs differ from e-clubs in that members live within a defined geographical region- in this case, District 6330. If you think this new style of Rotary club might be a good fit for you- reach out!

When someone asks you What is a Passport Club? The District 6330 Passport Club is a new format of Rotary Club; one where the structure better suits the lives of those who maybe can’t meet on a weekly basis or make significant financial contributions but who still have a passion for what Rotary does best; doing good. To facilitate this, the 6330 Passport Club conducts business electronically and offers several in-person opportunities per year. In lieu of weekly meetings, members are encouraged to engage in humanitarian service, however that works best for them! The founding principle is simple: Make Rotary fit your life! The Rotary District 6330 Passport Club members are full Rotary members, with the same privileges and rights as Rotarians who are members of traditional clubs.

Club member, Rotarian Jim Sillers, writes: I am still active in my local Rotary club while a member of the Rotary District 6330 Passport club. The distance is 5 hours drive from one end to the other. However, there are many opportunities to provide service to one’s community. With the lockdown, local businesses are hurting. I decided to volunteer two hours a day at a local nursery. I wear a Rotary shirt with the Rotary motto, Service Above Self. When someone asks me for help, while I am working, I tell them I am a Rotarian volunteer. It then gives me a chance tell them about the good works Rotary does around the world.

IS YOUR CLUB HOLDING ONLINE MEETINGS? A speaker invitation This note arrived from Bill Tobin, Rotary Relations Manager at shelterboxusa.org. With so many clubs meeting online for the time being, I would be more than happy to provide a program on ShelterBox to the District 6330 Passport Rotary club. I have given several presentations over the past two weeks to Rotary clubs across the U.S. on Zoom. Simply reply to me with your club info, requested date and time. ShelterBox is continuing to work across many responses and finding ways to manage health risks in order to continue to reach people who need shelter. As a disaster relief agency, we are determined to maintain our ability to respond through these challenging times. Please schedule an online presentation and visit our website for more information www.shelterboxusa.org or www.shelterboxcanada.org. Thanks, and best of health to you. Bill Tobin

A LITTLE ROTARY HISTORY – RGHF

About Rotary Foundation Canada Founded in 1917, The Rotary Foundation of Canada’s mission is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty. Rotary International is a community-based service organization that brings together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services around the world. There are more than 300 local Canadian clubs registered with Rotary International. The Foundation receives all of its donations from these Canadian clubs. The Foundation raises funds for Rotary International’s programs which are categorized as PolioPlus, global humanitarian projects and district-level projects. In F2017, 28% of program costs went towards PolioPlus, a program that provides funding and mobilizes volunteer support to eradicate polio around the world. While the charity does not report on its contribution to the effort, the World Health Organization reports that the number of polio cases worldwide has decreased by more than 99%, from an estimated 350,000 in 125 countries in 1988 to 17 reported cases in just 2 countries (Pakistan and Afghanistan) in 2017. Despite the progress, the World Health Organization reports that if a single child remains infected, children in all countries are at risk of contracting polio due to the infectious nature of the disease. Its global humanitarian projects (55% of program costs in F2017) are dedicated to six core areas: (1) promoting peace (2) fighting disease (3) providing clean water and hygiene (4) saving mothers and children (5) supporting education and (6) growing local economies. District-level projects (16% of program costs) allow local Rotary clubs to address immediate needs within their local communities. THE ROTARACT EVOLUTION

At midnight on 30 June, hundreds of Rotaractors will ring in the new Rotary year together. They’ll also be celebrating Rotaract’s ongoing evolution, including the expansion of Rotary membership to include Rotaract clubs. Interota 2020 will be held from 27 June to 1 July in Hong Kong. Interota is a triennial Rotaract event, organized by Rotaract members with support from Rotary International, that includes workshops, discussions, and speakers as well as cultural activities. Learn more at interota2020.org. A countdown celebration is scheduled for the last night of Interota 2020, Rotaract’s triennial convention, which will be held in Hong Kong next month. “It’s really exciting,” says Ignacio González, a member of the Rotaract Club of Oriente de Talca in Chile. Until recently, Rotaractors have been considered Rotary program participants. “Now,” says González, who serves on the Elevate Rotaract Task Force, “we are a part of Rotary. It’s a new era for Rotaract.” Rotary President Mark Daniel Maloney and President-elect Holger Knaack, strong champions of Rotaract, will be at Interota this year. It may be the first time a presidential changeover ceremony has taken place at a Rotaract event. Read more here.
