IMPORTANT ROTARY INFORMATION 2019-20 RI PRESIDENTIAL THEME
International President, 2018-19 – Mark Maloney RC of Decatur, Alabama, USA July Message 2019 I love to travel! I even enjoy the mundane process of getting from here to there. But last year, my wife, Gay, and I had one of those experiences that would strain the optimism of even the most cheerful traveler. We found ourselves with six hours to wait, at an airport where we were not scheduled to be, on a day we had not planned still to be traveling, having woken up that morning at a hotel unknown to us the night before. It was one of those days. As we waited at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, Gay and I took a walk to people watch. We went from one end of the terminal to the other and back, looking at every gate, every destination, every group of people waiting for their flights. Each gate was its own island of humanity. When we walked down the center of the concourse, we were in New York, moving along with everyone in one river. But when you veered off into those seats, you left that current and landed on an island. You were already in Delhi or Paris or Tel Aviv. As we started our walk, I thought: "All these different people, all these different countries, all in one place. This is like Rotary!" But as we walked past gate after gate, I realized something. It was not like Rotary at all. Because everyone in that river was heading for an island. And every island stayed an island. The people heading to Taipei might be talking to one another, but they were not talking to the people heading to Cairo or Lagos.

Contrast that with Rotary. Rotary allows us to connect with one another, in deep and meaningful ways, across our differences. It connects us with people we would never otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever could have known. It connects us with our communities, to professional opportunities, and to the people who need our help. Connection is what makes the experience of Rotary so very different from walking along that concourse at JFK Airport. In Rotary, none of us is an island. All of us are in Rotary together, whoever we are, wherever we are from, whatever language we speak or traditions we follow. We are all connected to one another — part of our communities and members not only of our clubs, but also of the global community to which we all belong. This connection is what lies at the heart of the Rotary experience. It is what brings us to Rotary. It is why we stay. Please join your fellow Rotarians on this journey as Rotary Connects the World. UPDATE ON POLIO ERADICATION

Two new cVDPV2 emergences are reported this week in DR Congo; one from Sankuru province and one from Kasai province. Sankuru province is in the centre of the country and had previously not participated in mOPV2 outbreak response campaigns. However, it is neighboring known-infected provinces, where mOPV2 response continues to be implemented. Kasai had already been participating in mOPV2 outbreak campaigns, as it had already been affected by a separate cVDPV2. Currently, total six, genetically-distinct cVDPV2 outbreaks affecting the country. One of the major factors that determines whether a child will receive vaccinations is the primary caregiver’s receptiveness to immunization. The decision to vaccinate is a complex interplay of various socio-cultural, religious, and political factors. Read how everyday people in Pakistan are advocating for vaccinations. Bayelsa State in the Niger Delta, Nigeria, is a riverine state with precarious transportation and rivers crisscrossing the land. Thanks to healthcare workers, community engagement and innovations in immunization practices, Bayelsa State jumped from one of the most poor-performing states in terms of routine immunization to be the second best in the country. UPDATE FROM WASRAG Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group
World Water Day Competition - 2019 Winners This year there were 16 entries to the 2019 World Water Day Competition. Clubs from around the world tackled a variety of projects involving children, river bank rehabilitation, tree planting, water treatment plants, and river cleanups. There were two prizes, each for $500 US. Most Innovative - Rotary Club of Voi, Kenya Rotary Club of Voi’s project involved seedballs. These are native tree and grass seeds which are enclosed in charcoal dust and can be thrown anywhere by anybody, alongside rivers to increase the vegetation along the riparian land, in deforested, environmentally degraded areas, on charcoal kilns where people had cut down trees to make charcoal and basically anywhere that needs trees. Since they can be thrown anywhere in any season, they are well protected by the charcoal dust, waiting for the rainy season and voila, they start to germinate. Such a creative way to impact the problem of soil erosion. Read more about their project.

MESSAGE FROM OUTOING CHARTER PRESIDENT Tanya Wolff Thank you to all who were able to attend our changeover on Wednesday evening – June 26 – and thank you to Allan and Selina for hosting!! For those who were unable to make it, I would like to share the following message. For those who were there, I have included a few updates. Well, fellow Passport Members……. we’ve broken the mold! We were a force to be reckoned with before the end of July last year. We already had a website, Facebook page and a small group of dedicated members who eventually became your board of directors. We have had the opportunity to experiment with different styles of service and commitment. I know that we will continue to design the club over time to meet the needs of our members. Our members participate in many different ways. Some prefer to do service in their community, some in the District, some internationally and many are doing all of the above. Some like a committee structure and others like to free-lance…. and that’s the beauty of Passport! Opportunities rather than Obligations!!
We fundraised over 10,000 CND dollars (over 4000.- to Polio, Kitchen Party ..over $5000.- with $4200,- of that going to TRF Annual Fund and $900.- soon to be allocated to projects that our members are working on. In addition to that approximately $500.- was raised for Shelterbox, plus proceeds from the Colombian Cards are still coming in for the Spina Bifida Centre in Colombia which we also provided a wheelchair for. Contributions made to The Rotary Foundation and directly to projects by individual members exceeded 20,000 USD.

We have increased female membership in the District, our club members are active in service projects and we have promoted Rotary and our club to the world. We are active in partnerships with other Rotary Clubs as well as other non-governmental entities locally and internationally. We sponsored 2 students to attend RYLA Rotary Youth Leadership Awards in London (one from Michigan and one from Ontario). We have achieved the qualifications that should earn us the 20182019 Rotary Citation with Presidential Distinction. We also attained the Silver Level District Literacy Award! Thank you for all you do!! I’m proud of this Club! I’m proud of my fellow members and I know that WE WERE THE INSPIRATION this year and we will continue to CONNECT THE WORLD as President Allan leads us into the new Rotary year!!

Changeover News The Rotary Club of District 6330 Passport had its first ever Club Changeover on Wednesday, June 26. “Rotary Connects the World” and “The 6330 Passport Club Connects the District!” We have representation on the board from the most westerly reaches of the District in Michigan through the easterly in Ontario. A very exciting year of challenges and change. Our Charter President got us up, running, and growing. We had our “Ask in Gear”! Incoming President, Allan Loiselle, will continue to lead and inspire us. Our first tradition, handing over the Club Charter to the new president – left below.

A letter from our Charter President Dear Passport Club members: In the weeks before and after the Rotary International Convention in Hamburg, Rotary has taken me on a journey to renew and celebrate my Rotary connections, from the Baltic to Croatia with the Rotary International Convention in between. I was proud and excited to share the different ways that our members are making Rotary FIT their lives. Many of our members attended the District 6330 Conference and were able to influence the District membership in a positive way. I can't wait to see the results of their brainstorming sessions. On July 1, we will enter into our first full year as a club. I will serve as your Membership Chair under President Allan.
