Greetings, dear changemakers of Rotary, One of Rotary’s founding principles was to use your vocation – whether as a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or another profession – to do good in the world. As we attempt to overcome and recover from the pandemic, this principle is vital in retraining people who have lost their jobs. In response, the Rotary E-Club of Tamar Hong Kong organized seminars for young people, with the aim of preparing them for the changing world of work. This type of training must happen on a large scale. According to the United Nations, global unemployment is expected to exceed 200 million people in 2022. Women and youths are likely to be disproportionately affected. This is why I’ve placed such a strong emphasis this year on projects that empower girls, and I’ve been delighted to see some of these projects in action. Of course, access to education and the path to employment can be blocked by a lack of water and sanitation infrastructure. A project in Pune, India, focuses on providing girls and women with an affordable, reusable sanitary pad. The project provides employment for production and distribution of the pads, and it will reduce the pollution caused by the disposal of 13.2 billion sanitary napkins in the country annually, many of which end up in India’s landfills. Others have used vocational service to advance the empowerment of women. The rotary Club of Poona, India, conducted workshops to teach martial arts to young women for self-defence against the threat of abuse or human trafficking. I’ve also been fortunate to use my vocation to do good through Rotary. The Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 devastated the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which are part of my district. Thousands of homes were destroyed, and many areas lost electricity and running water. On my visit to Little Andaman Island, the builder in me immediately wanted to build homes for the homeless islanders there. We decided to construct 500 homes in Little Andaman. On the last day of my seven trips to the island, I could see something glimmering below as my helicopter was about to land. I realized that what I was seeing were the roofs of new homes. I was overjoyed by the sight, and soon a realization dawned upon me. As a builder, I had built many beautiful buildings. In comparison, these 500 homes were the most ordinary buildings I had ever built, and they were in a place I likely will never visit again, for people I will never meet again. And yet the satisfaction I had in handing over these houses was greater than from anything I had previously built. Probably because for once I was using my vocation to Serve to Change Lives. You, too, may have had opportunities to use your vocation to Serve to Change Lives. I welcome your stories of performing vocational service through Rotary. Also, I want to close by congratulating every club that has engaged with the Each One, Bring One initiative, which asks every member to introduce one person to Rotary. Increasing our membership gives people from all walks of life the opportunity to share their knowledge and skills in transformational service.

Cliff Dochterman, Past Rotary International President (1992-93)* We are extremely sad to inform that Past RI President Cliff Dochterman (1992 - 93) has passed away on November 23, 2021. It has been said that Cliff Dochterman has spoken to more Rotary Clubs than anyone in the world. Over the past 50 years, he has served in almost every Rotary assignment, from Berkeley Rotary Club President to worldwide President of Rotary International in 1992-93. He has traveled the world on humanitarian projects and has been honored by the heads of state in many nations. Cliff had a 45-year career as an administrator at University of California at Berkeley and the University of the Pacific in Stockton. He has had a lifetime association with the Boy Scouts of America and is a former president of the local Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the county Parks and Recreation Commission. Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge has recognized his speeches with the George Washington Honor Medal. His RI theme during his presidency was Real Happiness Is Helping Others. Cliff and his wife, Mary Elena, belong to the Rotary Club of Moraga, near San Francisco, California. RIP Cliff Dochterman. Source: RI Director Julio Silva-Santisteban

ROTARY’S CORE VALUES
WHAT IS ROTARY? Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated purpose is to bring business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. It is a non-political and non-religious organization.

Passport Clubs differ from e-clubs in that members live within a defined geographical region – in this case, District 6330. However, that’s not always the case. The D6330 Global Passport Club members’ defined geographical area is the globe. If you think this new style of Rotary club might be a good fit for you - reach out!
When someone asks you What is a Passport Club? The founding principle is simple: Make Rotary fit your life! To facilitate this, the 6330 Passport Club conducts business electronically and offers several in-person opportunities per year. In lieu of weekly meetings, members are encouraged to engage in humanitarian service, however that works best for them! The members of the Rotary Club of District 6330 Passport are full Rotary members, with the same privileges and rights as Rotarians who are members of traditional clubs.

A LITTLE HUMOUR Henry and Martha had been married for many years and were now in their late 70s. Lately, Henry had become a little worried about Martha. He had noticed that she seemed to be losing her hearing, so he decided to conduct a little test to see just how bad her hearing really was. He stood about fifteen feet behind her in the kitchen and in his normal voice he asked her “Martha dear, what are we having for dinner?” There was no response. He moved a few feet closer and again he asked, “Martha dear, what are we having for dinner?” Again, there was no response. This time, he moved in closer so that he was about a foot behind her. In his normal speaking voice, he again asked, “Martha dear, what are we having for dinner?” Martha turned around to face him and with an exasperated look on her face, she said, “Henry! Have you gone deaf or something? For the third time now, we’re having roast beef!”
A Quebecer, staying in a hotel in Edmonton, phoned room service for some pepper. “Black pepper or white pepper?” asked the concierge. “Toilette pepper!” yelled the Quebecer.
A Polish immigrant went to the DMV to apply for a driver’s license. But first, he had to take the eyesight test. The optician showed him a card and on it were the letters: CZWIXNOSTACZ “Can you read this?” The optician asked. “Read it?” the Polish guy replied. “Heck, I play golf with the guy!”
The teacher asked her grade six class to make a list with the names of six great Canadians on it. Ten minutes later, she noticed that everyone but Johnny had stopped writing.

She asked him, “What’s the matter, Johnny? Can’t you think of six great Canadians?” “I have five,” Johnny said. “But I still need a goalie.”
A man in Russia has finally saved up enough money too buy a car and goes to his local dealer to put one on order. He is told that there is a ten-hear wait to get a new car and his name will be put on a list. He agrees and pays for the car. Then he is told that the car will be delivered exactly ten years from that day. He asks the car dealer, “Okay, comrade. Will it be delivered morning or afternoon?” The car dealer asks him, “What difference does it make whether it’s afternoon or morning? It’s ten years from now!” The guy tells him, “Well, the plumber is coming in the morning.”
Vegetarian is an old Indian word for “doesn’t hunt well.”
Recovering from knee surgery and the extraction of impacted wisdom teeth, I was lying on the couch with an ice bag on my leg and hot-water bottles against both cheeks. From the kitchen, I heard my mother cry out in pain. Through a mouth stuffed with gauze, I asked her what had happened. “You know,” she replied, “there’s nothing worse than a paper cut.”
A race horse is an animal that can take several thousand people for a ride at the same time.
The drive-up window at the bank where I’m a teller has an outside drawer to accept customer transactions. A woman once drove up with her dog in the front passenger seat, and the pet eagerly jumped over onto the driver’s lap when the car reached my window. He looked excited to see me. “Your dog is so friendly!” I said to the owner. “He thinks he’s at McDonald’s” she replied.
