January is finally here!

As we look forward to 2021, our thinking doesn’t have to stop at the end of these 365 days. Are you thinking ahead about what you will be doing in 2022, 2023, and beyond?

We cannot foresee the future, but we can steer ourselves where we want to go. I think it is important that every Rotary club hold a strategic meeting at least once a year. Past RI Director Greg Yank, who has a lot of experience working with clubs on their plans, shares his viewpoint.

A famous aphorism states, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” Planning is essential to achieving success in all areas of life, including Rotary, and we’re getting better at it every year.

Strategic planning for Rotary clubs works. I have helped many clubs find that pathway by working with them to build what I call a blueprint, a multiyear plan that answers the fundamental question: “What is our vision for our club?” The best plans I have seen are those that are focused, when a club concentrates its resources on the best opportunities it has.

Your Rotary club cannot be all things to its members and to the community it serves; it has limited human, financial, and time resources. A successful plan factors in assets and limitations to chart the desired pathway for your members.

Begin building a multiyear strategic plan by brainstorming with your club, asking, “What are our initiatives and priorities for the next two to three years?” Document your answers using action-oriented language that is specific, concrete, and measurable about the goals you want to achieve.

Next, narrow down your initiatives to a core set of three to five priorities. Your club will then develop specific objectives for each initiative, outlining who will be involved, key milestones of achievement, how progress will be tracked, and a timeline for completion. Keep your plan short and simple.

Then go out and do it. Review the progress you make toward accomplishing the initiatives, and revise as needed at least once a year. Rotary has a solid template to assist clubs in their planning, which you can find at my.rotary.org/en/document/strategic-planning-guide.

We want to enrich and enliven our clubs with new discussions and ideas. But how do we attract the diverse professionals, from different backgrounds, ages, and experiences, who are all driven by as strong a sense of integrity as we are?

Through strategic planning, we explore this question to define the very nature of our club and the value it offers to its members and to the community. Each club is different, and each club’s value will be unique. During the planning process, clubs may also find that some of the activities they used to do are no longer relevant or attractive.

Once your club makes a strategic plan, it’s time to take action and carry out the necessary changes. When we do that — as we engage members in vibrant and active clubs that not only have fun but also serve their communities with projects that have real and lasting impact — our clubs grow stronger. And when we discover what makes our own clubs unique and build upon those core values in all our efforts, Rotary Opens Opportunities to enrich the lives of everyone.

BRIEF ROTARY HISTORY – THE FOUR-WAY TEST The Four-Way Test Rotary’s current code of ethical conduct – The Four-Way Test – was developed*during the Great Depression, by a Rotarian, Herb Taylor, from the United States, as a four-part ethical guideline that helped him rescue a beleaguered business. Herb Taylor went on to become RI President in 1954-55.

The code’s four points are simple and direct – “Of all the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?”

The Four-Way Test was officially adopted by Rotary in 1943 and has been translated into the languages of over 100 countries.

It appears on highway billboards, in schoolrooms, and on the walls of businesses, in labour contracts, courtrooms and halls of government. According to some sources, it’s even on the moon, in the form of a FourWay Test pin planted on the surface by astronaut Buzz Aldrin!

About our DG-elect Erin Shankie Erin joined Rotary in 2012 after a Group Study Exchange to Japan. She held the role of Foundation Chair, Vice President, President-Elect, and President with the Rotary Club of Greater Flint Sunrise before becoming Assistant Governor for Area 7 in 2016.

In 2014, Erin founded ER Sports and Leadership, a company focused on creating leaders who embrace unique perspectives, set goals, and foster positive team culture. Her work involves diverse groups of individuals in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors and concentrates on teams to provide organizational development as well as to build leadership and communication skills.

Erin is a lifelong learner and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership to accompany her Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics, Master’s degree in Education-Instruction, and graduate certificate in Leadership and Diversity Management in Sport. She has been trained in Sports-Based Youth Development (SBYD), nonprofit leadership and facilitation, and is an ACE certified health coach.

Erin also facilitates training for runners and teaches youth dance. Erin is married to Don and has one daughter, Emerson.

On a wintery November day, vaccinators across Afghanistan wrapped up warm, checked that they had facemasks and hand sanitizer, and headed out into the cold morning. Their mission? To reach 9.9 million children with polio vaccines, before snowfall blocked their way.

From valleys to muddy lanes, we look at some of the environments where vaccinators work, as well as some of the key challenges that have made 2020 one of the toughest years for polio eradicators.

Panjshir province - Afghanistan For some vaccinators, the first snows had already arrived. At the top of the Panjshir valley, Ziaullah and Nawid Ahmad started their day at 7:00 a.m.

“We walked six hours to Sar-e Tangi and back to take polio drops to the last houses in the valley”, said Ziaullah. The mountainous roads in this area are impassable by car, so vaccinators walk many kilometers to the most remote villages. Sar-e Tangi means ‘top narrow edge’, and the view during the long winter is of snowy peaks.

A few kilometers from Sar-e Tangi, father Arsalan Khan was proud to have protected his own and other children in the extended family with polio drops. He said, “I ensure all the children in the family are vaccinated during each round the drops were offered and of course I will keep vaccinating them each time the vaccinators visit our village”.

Khan continued, “The vaccinators walk long distances across the mountain slopes to our villages, sometimes during harsh weather conditions, to bring polio drops to our doors.”

“Thanks to the people and countries that support the vaccination campaigns and make it possible for the drops to reach our doorsteps.”

Badakhshan province - Afghanistan In Badakhstan, Mr. Azizullah had COVID-19 safety measures on his mind. Like all vaccinators working for the polio programme, he had been trained on how to safely deliver polio drops during the pandemic. The

temperature was below zero, with the first snow on the ground, as Mr. Azizullah walked through the rugged terrain from home to home, ensuring to wear his mask and regularly sanitize his hands.

Mr. Abdul Basit and Misbahuddin, volunteers in nearby Aab Barik village said, “It is cold and walking through muddy lanes is not easy, but we have to do our job. There was one case of polio in Badakhshan so that means there is probably virus circulation and we have to stop that”.

The contest will generate a bumper crop of 70-second videos to inspire Rotarians, so we can hit the ground running all across the glob when RI’s new Protecting the Environment Area of Focus goes live on July 1.

You’ll be able to hunt through the films to find great stories to use with your own community, club, district, or region.

How will it work? Starting January 1, 2021, you can upload a 70- to 100-second video on the theme #I Fix the Planet. English is the common language judges will use, and the website offers a way to add English subtitles so you can record in your own language if you prefer.

Use your smart phone to tell people about an environmental project you’ve done, are doing, or plan to do, or simply share what you are doing personally to “fix the planet.” Then, watch other people’s videos and vote for your favourites.

Submissions and votes will be accepted through March 31. A panel of Rotarians and Rotaractors will then select seven winners from the top People’s Choice vote getters, and those seven will win a Zoom conference with RI President Holger. The top three will win a “social good” prize donated to an approved rotary, Rotaract, or Interact project of their choice.

The contest is the brainchild of ESRAG Europe member Ludwig Kalthoff and is generously sponsored by RI President Holger Knaack.

NEW Sanitation and Hygiene Fund A new global fund called the Sanitation and Hygiene Fund was announced. This fund will provide global investment towards sanitation, hygiene, and menstrual health.

The fund will invest in country-led programs to accelerate progress in sustainable WASH areas.

2020 LITRAG Literacy Month Awards One of the winners of the Literacy Month Awards was the Rotary E-Club of the Caribbean, 7020 for the highly successful signature project – the Butterfly Storybook.

The Butterfly Storybook, Rotary E-Club of the Caribbean, 7020 is an annual storywriting contest open to all children ages 7-11 living in the Caribbean. The project promotes literacy development (writing skills), shares the culture of the Caribbean, and provides literacy resources to schools in need.

Each year, the selected stories are published in a book (versions in English, French, Creole, and Spanish) that is provided to local schools and libraries. A key goal of this project, which involves students and Rotarians in 10 countries of the Northern Caribbean, is promoting international and cultural understanding.

When someone asks you What is a Passport Club?

The District 6330 Passport Club is a new format of Rotary Club; one where the structure better suits the lives of those who maybe can’t meet on a weekly basis or make significant financial contributions but who still have a passion for what Rotary does best; doing good.

To facilitate this, the 6330 Passport Club conducts business electronically and offers several in-person opportunities per year. In lieu of weekly meetings, members are encouraged to engage in humanitarian service, however that works best for them!

The founding principle is simple: Make Rotary fit your life!

The Rotary District 6330 Passport Club members are full Rotary members, with the same privileges and rights as Rotarians who are members of traditional clubs.

OUR AGM - DECEMBER 2, 2020

On December 22, members and friends of the Rotary Club of Grand Bend worked hard cleaning up debris at the harbour area.

The concern was the debris was full of little pieces of plastic which would have been washed back into the lake at the next big storm.

Our club member, Mary Ruston, was right there, lending a helping hand! Thank you, Mary!

Dear fellow Rotarians, I am writing to ask that you consider funding the sponsorship of a student (or students) through Creating Opportunities for Guatemalans, a charitable organization that I run in Guatemala. The mission of our organization is to provide educational support to children of families living below the poverty line so that those children can attend school.

Because the COVID pandemic caused so many people in Guatemala to lose their jobs, many more families have come to us seeking support to enable their children to stay in school. As a result, we have a long list of students for whom we are seeking sponsorship.

Sponsorship support provides a student with all his or her necessary school supplies and uniforms. In the case of junior high and high school students, sponsorship also covers the cost of inscription and monthly school fees, as well as transportation. For all students, sponsorship donations also enable us to provide our after-school program in which the students receive homework support, as well as attend classes in English and Math, and participate in a structured Reading program to help them improve their level of reading. They also receive a daily nutritional snack and nutrition education.

Sponsorship for a primary school student is $480CAD/year. For those in junior high or high school, sponsorship is $960CAD/year. Sponsorship payments can also be made on monthly or quarterly basis.

Rotary has partnered with UNICEF and the WHO in a unique way. The chief scientist of the World Health Organization – Dr. Soumya Swaminathan.

Many of the solutions for our public health problems do come through science, but then they have to be translated into action on the ground - and that’s where Rotarians can do a wonderful job.

Consider the COVID pandemic. It is clear that this virus does not respect borders. It affects everyone. This is the kind of problem for which we all have to come together. Work with the local context, with local data and involve and empower local communities. COVID19 is a disease where you need behaviour change. You need people to actually comply with the restrictions that are being put in place – and comply with them for a significant period of time. This is where organizations such as Rotary can get involved, ensuring that the right messages actually are reaching the people.

Consider anti-vaccers, for example. This is a huge and growing problem around the world. What people of this generation have not seen is that it was not so long ago that we had hundreds of thousands of children crippled by polio, that we had tens of thousands of people dying of smallpox every year. Only a couple of decades ago, two out of every five children did not survive to their first birthday. And it is only because of vaccines that we’ve been able to overcome these diseases.

It is the right time for Rotary to take on new public health issues because • • •

we have the reach we have the voice, and we have the credibility to reach ordinary citizens living all around the world.
