In Rotary, 23 February is our anniversary, and February is also the month when we focus on promoting peace.

There is a reason for this: Contributing to peace and international understanding has been a high priority for us since our earliest days.

We are often asked: “How can we get involved in peace now?” There are many paths to peace in Rotary. Our youth programs point us in the direction of Positive Peace, as does the work of intercountry committees and the Rotary Action Group for Peace.

Another path is the Rotarian Peace Projects Incubator (RPPI), an inspirational collaboration among Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Rotary Peace Fellows and alumni. Led by Rotarians in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, RPPI has designed 48 global projects that any club can support, either directly or through Rotary Foundation global grants. Nino Lotishvili and Matthew Johnsen, alumni of the Rotary Peace Center at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, are two of the many volunteers.

During my Rotary peace journey, I have learned how personal resilience helps build inner peace and create sustainable outer peace. This was the inspiration behind the Women Peace Ambassadors for the South Caucasus project, which is based on my field research in Georgia. The RPPI team of Rotarians and peace fellows recognized the incredible potential of women from mixed-ethnicity families who live on borderlands to be role models for peace within and beyond their communities. Through workshops on building inner and outer peace that draw on the power of storytelling, 40 participants will be sharing their stories and reaching around 400 extended family and community members. These inspiring but marginalized women will reclaim their inner strength as peacebuilders at the grassroots level. In this way, we will take steps toward the sustainable, peaceful society we need so much, not only in our region, but throughout the world. — Nino Lotishvili I was excited to join the peace incubator project and to further strengthen my ties with Rotary’s peace community by working with past and current peace fellows to develop these proposals. My team wrote five proposals — three in Bangladesh, one in Iraq, and one in Poland — that focus on the arts and on education to generate dialogue across religious divisions and avert the radicalization of young people. I was inspired by how, despite the pandemic, we came together via technology with a vision to develop, test, and strengthen ideas and to produce workable solutions that clubs across the world can support to advance peace. ROTARY’S FOCUS ON PEACE Millions of people all over the world are currently displaced by armed conflict or persecution.

In fact, 90% of casualties in armed conflicts are civilians, half of which are children.

Through service projects and Rotary programs, the Rotary family is committed to pursuing projects that address the structural causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.

EACH YEAR, ROTARY AWARDS UP TO 130 FULLY FUNDED FELLOWSHIPS FOR DEDICATED LEADERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO STUDY AT ONE OF OUR PEACE CENTERS.

Through academic training, practice, and global networking opportunities, the Rotary Peace Centers program develops the capacity of peace and development professionals or practitioners to become experienced and effective catalysts for peace. The fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and all internship and field-study expenses.

Since the program began in 2002, the Rotary Peace Centers have trained more than 1,300 fellows who now work in more than 115 countries. Many serve as leaders in governments, NGOs, the military, education, law enforcement, and international organizations like the United Nations and the World Bank.

Rotary Peace Fellowships The Rotary Peace Fellowship is designed for leaders with work experience in peace and development. Our fellows are committed to community and international service and the pursuit of peace. Each year, The Rotary Foundation awards up to 50 fellowships for master’s degrees and 80 for certificate studies at premier universities.

Master’s degree programs Accepted candidates study peace and development issues with research-informed teaching and a diverse student body. The programs last 15 to 24 months and include a two- to three-month field study, which participants design themselves.

Professional development certificate program During the one-year program, experienced peace and development professionals with diverse backgrounds gain practical skills to promote peace within their communities and across the globe. Fellows complete field studies, and they also design and carry out a social change initiative.

BRIEF ROTARY HISTORY – MERITORIOUS SERVICE Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Award Two very special awards of recognition occasionally are presented by the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation to Rotarians who render outstanding service to The Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service recognizes significant and dedicated service by a Rotarian to promote the programs of The Rotary Foundation and thus advance the Foundation's goal of better understanding and friendly relations among people of the world.

The second award, called the Distinguished Service Award, is presented to a Rotarian whose outstanding record of service to The Rotary Foundation is on a much broader basis and spreads beyond the district level and continues over an extended period of time. The Distinguished Service Award acknowledges the efforts of a Rotarian who has already received the Citation of Meritorious Service, for continuing efforts to promote international understanding.

Both of these select awards are presented for exemplary personal service and devotion to the Foundation rather than for financial contributions. No more than 50 Distinguished Service Awards are granted by the trustees in any one year, and there is only one recipient of a Citation for Meritorious Service in any district each year.

A recipient of the Citation for Meritorious Service is not eligible for nomination for a Distinguished Service Award until two or more years have elapsed. It is a very proud distinction for any Rotarian to be selected for one of these high levels of recognition by The Rotary Foundation Trustees. (Source: ABCs of Rotary)

LOOKING AHEAD in D6330 Your 2021 District 6330 Conference. Your 2021 District 6330 Conference looks a lot different as you don’t need to travel outside of your community!

D6330 Environment Day. April 24, 2021 we are asking every club to participate in celebrating Rotary’s 7th avenue of service, “Supporting the Environment” in your area.

The District Conference committee is working with Associate Professor Stephan Vachon and students that are part of the Centre for Environment and Sustainability at Western University. We will provide each club different options to participate on this special day, no matter what COVID-19 19 restrictions are in place.

50 Years of Youth Exchange. June 5, 2021, we will be celebrating 50 years of Youth Exchange virtually connecting with past students, their families, host families, and other Rotarians current and past that have been part of Rotary’s youth exchange program.

UPDATE ON POLIO ERADICATION

In a newly-released statement following the final meeting of the Polio Oversight Board (POB) that was held virtually on 18 December 2020, the POB looks back at the support that the programme provided to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, while remaining strongly devoted to the goal of a polio-free world. The POB reaffirms its commitment that polio-funded assets are available to countries to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the next phase of COVID-19 vaccine introduction and delivery.

The POB also believes that for countries introducing COVID-19 vaccine, there are lessons and experiences to be learnt from the rollout of nOPV2 under the EUL recommendation, if emergency regulatory pathways such as WHO EUL are used, including in the areas of monitoring readiness-verification, safety surveillance, and regulatory considerations.

In 1953, Canada‌ ‌ experienced its worst polio epidemic on record. An estimated 11,000 people in Canada were left paralyzed by polio between 1949 and 1954. The disease peaked in 1953 with nearly 9,000 cases and 500 deaths. In Alberta, the number of cases shot up from 82 annually to 1,472.

Polio shaped health care in Edmonton and Alberta. Alberta was the first province to join the vaccine field trial sponsored by the American National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (NFIP), and the only one to have province-wide participation. There was also a Polio Sufferers Act which provided government-funded care for polio treatment and after-care before there was universal health care.

Polio also sparked the beginning of interdisciplinary care at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) and the Intensive Care Unit we know today is a direct legacy of the polio ward.

GENEVA/ NEW YORK, 6 November 2020 – UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) today issued an urgent call to action to avert major measles and polio epidemics as COVID-19 continues to disrupt immunization services worldwide, leaving millions of vulnerable children at heightened risk of preventable childhood diseases.

The two organizations estimate that US$655 million (US$400 million for polio and US$255 million for measles) are needed to address dangerous immunity gaps in non-Gavi eligible countries and target age groups.

“COVID-19 has had a devastating effect on health services and in particular immunization services, worldwide,” commented Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

“But unlike with COVID, we have the tools and knowledge to stop diseases such as polio and measles. What we need are the resources and commitments to put these tools and knowledge into action. If we do that, children’s lives will be saved.”

“We cannot allow the fight against one deadly disease to cause us to lose ground in the fight against other diseases,” said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF Executive Director. “Addressing the global COVID-19 pandemic is critical. However, other deadly diseases also threaten the lives of millions of children in some of the poorest areas of the world. That is why today we are urgently calling for global action from country leaders, donors and partners.

We need additional financial resources to safely resume vaccination campaigns and prioritize immunization systems that are critical to protect children and avert other epidemics besides COVID-19.”

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable.

In 2019, there were an estimated 229 million cases of malaria worldwide.

The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 409,000 in 2019.

Children aged under 5 years are the most vulnerable group affected by malaria; In 2019, they accounted for 67 percent (274,000 of all malaria deaths worldwide.

The WHO African Region carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2019, the region was home to 94 percent of malaria cases and deaths.

Total funding for malaria control and elimination reached an estimated USD $3 billion in 2019.

Contributions from governments of endemic countries amounted to USD $900 million, representing 31 percent of total funding.

Eleven years ago, Malaria Partners International was founded by Rotary members with a focus on advocacy within the Rotary community, and on the development of projects and large-scale malaria prevention programs.

Our name has changed but our mission remains steadfast: To ignite a Rotary Campaign for the Global Eradication of Malaria.

The mission and vision of Malaria Partners International are closely aligned with two of Rotary International’s seven areas of focus: Disease Prevention & Treatment and Maternal & Child Health. Malaria Partners International was founded by members of Rotary. The board is composed of Rotary members from across the United States, and it works with Rotary clubs around the world to reduce the burden of malaria.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

The Rotary Foundation (Canada) is an official associate foundation of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

D6330 GRANTS MANAGEMENT COURSE Some salient points Donations that are directed to the Rotary Foundation’s Annual Fund are the primary source of funding for District Grants. A portion of the club’s donations (and your personal donations) to the Annual Fund are returned to the district to fund the District Grants.

District 6330 asks clubs to submit a proposal before May 31 so that they can gauge the demand from clubs and allocate available funding to that demand. If the proposal is received before May 31, the club is guaranteed a portion of the funds available for the next Rotary year.

District grant funds are limited. District Grant funding will be $1 for every $2 of club-raised funds to a maximum of USD $2,000 for any club in one Rotary year.

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) This document outlines the terms of club qualification, club leadership responsibilities, and financial management. Funds can be used only for the project activities. Two club members are required for signing cheques. Receipts and complete bookkeeping records are mandatory.

All documents must be retained for at least 5 years. The final report must be submitted no more than 2 months after project completion and no later than May 31.

The initial proposal, submitted before May 31 in the year before you wish to work on the project, must contain a brief description of the project and a draft balanced budget.

The complete application requires more details including detailed funding with estimates and quotations, a letter of support from the beneficiaries, and a more detailed project description.

Work may not proceed nor may expenses be incurred on any district grant funded project until approval is received.

Following approval of the district grant, work may begin on the project and expenses may be incurred.

However, the club pays all expenses related to the project until the funds are paid after the final report is submitted.

The final report for the project is filed with the District Grants Committee within two months of completing the project and no later than May 31 of that year.

When someone asks you What is a Passport Club?

The District 6330 Passport Club is a new format of Rotary Club; one where the structure better suits the lives of those who maybe can’t meet on a weekly basis or make significant financial contributions but who still have a passion for what Rotary does best; doing good.

To facilitate this, the 6330 Passport Club conducts business electronically and offers several in-person opportunities per year. In lieu of weekly meetings, members are encouraged to engage in humanitarian service, however that works best for them!

The founding principle is simple: Make Rotary fit your life!

The Rotary District 6330 Passport Club members are full Rotary members, with the same privileges and rights as Rotarians who are members of traditional clubs.

IDEAS - ROTARY AND PEACE IN OTHER LOCALES

Source: https://honouringindigenouspeoples.com/rotary-city-of-kenora-to-build-peace-park/ The Rotary Club of Kenora and the City of Kenora are working in collaboration to create a beautiful Rotary Peace Park. Opening is expected to be fall 2021. It will consist of a granite pole with messaging in English, French, Ojibway, Oji-Cree and possibly, if space permits, Ukrainian and German representative of the area languages.

A monument dedicated to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, Trans and 2 Spirited People (MMIWGT2S) will be featured on this site. It is important to bring awareness to the thousands of documented names of missing and murdered women and those who remain missing with no investigation into their whereabouts.

The natural beauty will include native medicinal plants, walkways, and several benches overlooking Lake of the Woods. It will be a peaceful place for people to rest and reflect.

The club will be partnering with local schools next year to do a mini peace pole project. This is expected to be an art and education project where children will learn about peace.

Peace Pole The costs associated with the creation of the park is expected to be $50,000. Consider donating in honour of loved ones, sharing the message of “peace on earth – goodwill to all.”

Honouring Indigenous People – Something to think about

Reconciliation begins with acknowledgement. We need to own and acknowledge our truth... as ugly as it may be. We also need to recognize that our actions have consequences. It is not enough to simply say “Ya this was done” but we also need to own that these actions have had an extremely negative impact on generations of Indigenous individuals, families, and communities.

Only after that recognition of the truth of our actions and consequences can we begin to ask... “How do we make this right? How do we reconcile?” Rainmaker, essentially is a song of acknowledgement.

As a band we were so thrilled to work collaboratively with the amazingly talented folks from "Okama" in creating the song "Rainmaker." We also want to thank the staff at Woodland Cultural Centre for allowing us to film on the grounds of a former residential school.

We hope that this video speaks as much to you watching it as it did for us in creating it.
