February Message 2019 In my travels over the past year, I've visited many strong, vibrant clubs and districts that are transforming their communities. When I attend their meetings, I can feel the energy.

When I meet their members, I can see they are people of action. And when I look at their communities, I can recognize the impact of their work.

I've also visited communities with Rotary clubs that were hardly more than social clubs. It shouldn't ever be that way. Fortunately, there's a simple approach that I believe can help revitalize any club.

I'd like to challenge every Rotary club to come up with at least one high-impact service project. Each club already has the potential, the resources, to make it happen. It has the power to change people's lives — completely.

It doesn't take millions of dollars. One of the most transformational projects I've been a part of involved providing a Jeep to a group of midwives in Haiti. We had asked the midwives what we could do for them, and they told us they needed a way to reach expectant mothers in a remote part of the country. We supplied a Jeep, painted it pink, and put the Rotary logo on it. Three years later, we went back to see how they were doing. They were excited by the outcomes: They told us that the mortality rate for mothers and infants in that region had dropped by 50 percent.

That's what I call transformational service.

But Jeeps don't last forever, and after eight years on the road, that vehicle was on its last legs. So we bought a pink Land Cruiser. It's still on the road, allowing the midwives to provide prenatal care to women in that remote region.

What makes a project transformational? It doesn't have to involve a lot of money, but it has to reach people and have a major impact in the community. That is the key, and that is where careful planning and thorough research come in. So do your research. Leverage your resources. Seek partnerships that can increase your impact. And then take action.

Of course, service is only part of what a strong club must offer. It must also have good speakers, provide leadership development, involve Rotaract and Interact, and bring value to its members and reasons to participate in Rotary events.

If your club is transformational and well-organized, everything else will follow. Members will be engaged, and new members will be eager to join you. Fundraising will be easier: People love to give when they see how their money is making a difference and when they know the organization is accountable. Your club will be vibrant, relevant, and alive — and it will Be the Inspiration to those within its ranks as well as to the community it serves.

ABCs OF ROTARY TOLERANCE OF DIFFERENCES - Consider Peace in February and all year Occasionally there is a temptation to criticize the laws, customs and traditions of another country that may seem strange or contrary to our own. In some instances illegal practices or customs of one nation are completely lawful and acceptable in another.

As members of an international organization dedicated to world understanding and peace, it behoves Rotarians to exercise restraint in judging our Rotary friends and citizens from other countries when their behavior seems unusual to us. A Rotary policy has existed for more than half a century relating to this dilemma of international relationships.

The statement, adopted in 1933, says that because it is recognized that some activities and local customs may be legal and customary in some countries and not in others, Rotarians should be guided by this admonition of tolerance: "Rotarians in all countries should recognize these facts and there should be a thoughtful avoidance of criticism of the laws and customs of one country by the Rotarians of another country." The policy also cautions against" any effort on the part of Rotarians of one country to interfere with the laws or customs of another country."

As we strive to strengthen the bonds of understanding, goodwill and friendship, these policies still provide good advice and guidance.

ROOM 711 – ROTARY’S BIRTHPLACE The number 711 has a very special significance for Rotary. Room 711 of the old Unity Building, formerly located at 127 North Dearborn Street in downtown Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A., was the birthplace of Rotary International. That historic room, which was the office of engineer Gus Loehr, was the location of that first meeting when Paul Harris met with several friends to discuss his new idea of a club for professionals and businessmen.

It took extensive research and dedication by a few Chicago Rotarians to preserve the room and restore it to its 1905 authenticity. For years, Room 711 was preserved as a miniature Rotary museum by Rotarians around the world who voluntarily belonged to and contributed annually to the "Paul Harris 711 Club," which provided funds for leasing, maintenance and preservation. In 1989, the Unity Building was about to be torn down. Members of the 711 Club carefully dismantled the landmark room and placed its contents in storage.

There it stayed until 1994, when the recreated Room 711 found a permanent home, and this piece of the Rotary heritage is preserved at the RI World Headquarters in Evanston.

Celebrating Peace – formerly World Understanding Month

The month of February is special in the Rotary calendar since it includes the anniversary of the first meeting of Rotary held on 23 February 1905, now designated World Understanding and Peace Day. In designating World Understanding Month, the Rotary International board asks all Rotary clubs to plan programs for their weekly meetings and undertake special activities to emphasize "understanding and goodwill as essential for world peace."

To observe this designated month, many clubs arrange international speakers, invite Youth Exchange students and international scholars from schools and universities to club meetings, plan programs featuring former Group Study Exchange team members, arrange discussions on global issues, present entertainment with an international cultural or artistic theme, and schedule other programs with an international emphasis.

Many clubs take the opportunity to launch an international community service activity or make contact with a Rotary club in another country. It is a good month to initiate a Rotary Friendship Exchange, a 3-H project or encourage support for Polio Plus and other Rotary Foundation programs.

World Understanding Month is a chance for every club to pause, plan and promote the Fourth Avenue of Service - Rotary's continued quest for goodwill, peace and understanding among people of the world.

PUBLIC HEALTH LEADERSHIP STEPS UP SUPPORT FOR POLIO ERADICATION EFFORTS WHO Executive Board’s strong push to finish the job WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus opened the Organization’s Executive Board (EB) on 24 January with a report from his first visit of the year, to the polio endemic countries of Afghanistan and Pakistan: “This year I have taken over as chair of the Polio Oversight Board. That’s why my first trip of the new year was to Afghanistan and Pakistan. These are the two countries that are the last frontiers of wild poliovirus. We are so close to ridding humanity of this disease, and I am personally committed to ensuring that we do. I was really impressed by the commitment of the governments of Afghanistan and Pakistan.”

The Executive Board, comprised of 34 Member States’ designated experts in the field of health, convened in Geneva in late January to discuss a wide-ranging agenda on the most pressing and urgent health concerns of our times, including the urgency to rev up efforts in this last mile of polio eradication efforts.

A new circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) outbreak has been confirmed in Mozambique.

Two genetically-linked circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) isolates were detected from an acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) case (with an onset of paralysis on 21 October 2018, in a six-year old girl with no history of vaccination, from Molumbo district, Zambézia province), and a community contact of the case.

UPDATE FROM WASRAG WATER AND SANITATION – ROTARY ACTION GROUP

Spanish Rotarians Build Well in Guatemala Spanish and Guatemalan Rotarians create bonds through Water and Sanitation Project Rotary Clubs in Spain and Guatemala are working together to construct a water well in the village of Patzún, Guatemala. The well will be 1,200 feet deep. It will require a pump, distribution tank, chlorination system, pumping system for distribution and distribution network. Its estimated cost is $114,000 USD. Maintenance has been coordinated with the municipality.

This water system will benefit 500 families (approximately 3,000 people) who live on their crops of broccoli, peas and sweet pea, corn and fruit trees such as peaches, apples and plums.

The clubs are using a Global Grant from The Rotary Foundation to undertake this important project in an underserved area of Guatemala. …from www.wasrag.org

PROUD THAT OUR MEMBERS ARE #peopleofaction Rotarian Roberta (Robbi) Howlett 6330 Passport member Roberta (Robbi) Howlett, PhD (Health Sciences) enlightens us about Rotary International’s Cadre of Technical Experts: Rotary International oversees and supports the Cadre, whose members assist in the global grant process. Cadre members are chosen based on their expertise and experience in one or more areas that align with RI’s priorities for international development Among other activities, Cadre members can be asked to: • • •

review global grant applications review a project on site in various stages of the project, or advise and consult with various RI committees

RI has developed training modules for Cadre members that are available at RI’s international conferences and regional meetings. Most recently, RI has also promoted networking opportunities with other Rotary groups, e.g., Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group (WASRAG), Zone Committees and others.

It has been my pleasure to serve as a Cadre member for the last ten years or so. I have reviewed grant applications from Germany, Belarus, and North Carolina (on site). When the Canadian Rotary Collaboration was still active, I evaluated global grant projects in Belize and Ghana and consulted on several other grants within D6330 and elsewhere.

My areas of expertise and interests include public health, cancer screening, disease prevention, literacy and maternal/child health.

Rotarian Jim Sillers Rotarian Jim – a member of our Passport Club who lives in Michigan – is currently on a friendship exchange to Colombia, South America. He travelled from Anguilla to Colombia on January 29 – from one adventure to another.

Jim writes: Today, we visited another Rotary project in Colombia which was located at a huge food market. Thirteen years ago, one of the vendors realized the children were begging for food. He organized all the vendors to give the leftover food to those in need.

A foundation was formed, and once a month, each vendor donates money to support educating these children.

Today, there is a school attended by 500 students.

The graduating class this year has 11 students going on to university with full-aid scholarships.

Three years ago, a Rotary club of 7 members got involved. They’re building a kitchen to prepare food for the students. They also teach the students how to prepare healthy meals. This kitchen will be able to prepare food that can be sold at the market to help in supporting this school.

The students loved hearing me speak English. The young lad wanted me to take him back to the United States.

I told him to study hard, and one day his dream might become a reality.

Colombia, officially the Republic of Colombia, is a sovereign state largely situated in the northwest of South America, with territories in Central America. Colombia shares a border to the northwest with Panama, to the east with Venezuela and Brazil and to the south with Ecuador and Peru. The Capital is Bogotรก. The official languages are Spanish and English. (Wikipedia)

They have a very clean public transportation system. Once built, some individuals painted graffiti in it. The Mayor shut it down until those responsible came to his office and also cleaned up their mess.

Having the metro closed down paralyzed this huge city. It was closed only three days before the damage was corrected. But not, the citizens take great pride in their community. You cannot eat, and you can drink only water on the metro system.

The metro includes cable cars up into the mountains, along with bikes and the train. The cable cars are needed to service the population that lives along the mountain ridges.

GET-TOGETHERS IN SARNIA! Passport members living in the Sarnia area had the opportunity to meet up for coffee at Blackwater Coffee Company on the morning of February 2 to learn about each other and about Rotary opportunities.

How about planning a coffee visit in your part of the district?

A great way to meet and get to know one another!

One of the great opportunities of being a Passport member is being encouraged to visit and work with any/all of the clubs in our District and beyond!!
