As I look back on 2020, I reflect on how our lives have changed. The global COVID-19 pandemic brought pain and loss to many of us. And for almost all of us, our daily lives, family time, and work also changed this year.

But we've made it to the end of this difficult year, not on our own but by reaching out to one another, as we always do in Rotary. With each passing year, I become prouder of our organization.

I will choose to remember 2020 as a year of great change and strength for us; Rotary didn't stop, despite the pandemic. We removed obstacles, found new ways to connect, and embraced new approaches to service, such as online projects and virtual fundraising. I have invited two Rotarians to share their stories about how Rotary grew stronger this year.

When the pandemic shut everything down, our emerging e-club was already providing digital service, including internationally. Fourteen U.S. women and I, members of multiple Rotary clubs, were using WhatsApp to mentor women entrepreneurs in rural Costa Rica, helping them to grow their ecotourism business, RETUS Tours [the subject of the magazine's May cover story, "Nature & Nurture"].

The project has grown, with 30 Rotarians now providing consulting and help with the RETUS website and social media. Most importantly, we continue building relationships and empowering these women to transform their own lives, and we are doing it online. I've even helped one of the women, Rosa, prepare a presentation in English for an online international conference. While our engagement with the Costa Rican women still requires some hands-on activity, the most transformative impacts haven't had to be in person.

— Liza Larson, Rotary E-Club Engage and Rotary Club of Plano East, Texas I was president of my club when COVID-19 hit, and many members didn't yet have Zoom. Only 10 of our 53 members participated in the first Zoom meeting during the pandemic. I thought that reaching out and getting guest speakers from around the world to engage our members would help. Many Rotary leaders, a Rotary Peace Fellow, and even RI President Holger Knaack visited virtually and spoke to our club.

Meeting attendance improved, while we reduced running costs by cutting out meals. Some members who worked outside our city and had missed our meetings even rejoined us. Registering our online meetings on My Rotary enhanced contacts with clubs across the world, and the joint meeting addressed by Holger attracted more than 300 visitors. We also raised more funds as members and visitors contributed to our projects. To continue being flexible for all, we are now offering hybrid meetings. For me, 2020 has been the best year in Rotary as I've made many new friends.

ROTARY HISTORY – THE OBJECT OF ROTARY Rotary International was founded in 1905 by Paul Harris in Chicago. There were many clubs in the U.S. at that time, but they were mostly trade and labor groups, as well as associations of people who shared common ethnic backgrounds, religious beliefs and political persuasions.

But Paul Harris, Silvestor Schiele, Gustavus Loehr, and Hiram Shorey wanted their new Rotary club to be unlike any other. Instead of having numerous lawyers or bankers or accountants, they wanted only one man to represent each profession. Thus, was born the classification system used by Rotary clubs today.

They soon attracted other members from diverse backgrounds and grew the Rotary club of Chicago to 200 members in 3 years. In 1908, a Chicago Rotarian traveled to San Francisco on business, where he met a young lawyer named Homer Wood – he was so interested that he started a San Francisco club. Within two weeks, Wood traveled to Oakland to persuade his friends to start a Rotary club there. His fellow San Francisco charter member Art Holman traveled to Seattle, and thus in 1909 Seattle #4 became the 4th Rotary club in the world.

Now we have 1.2 million Rotarians in 32,000 clubs in 168 countries around the world – more countries than are members of the United Nations. It is interesting to note that Paul Harris was 37 years old when he founded Rotary, and the other three men were also in their 30’s. Although Rotary’s early focus was on fellowship and business networking, members soon incorporated the elements of service.

In 1906, there was an amendment to the bylaws which stated, “An organization that is wholly selfish cannot last long. If we, as a Rotary club, expect to survive and grow, we must do some things to justify our existence. We must perform a civic service.”

The first service project of the club was a public toilet outside City Hall in Chicago. The club became the first service club in the U.S. Likewise, today, fellowship and business networking are not enough to retain a Rotarian’s membership. He or she must get involved in a service project to stay interested in Rotary.

Three members of Seattle #4, Roy Denny, Ernie Skeel, and James Pinkham presented a Rotary platform at the annual Rotary convention in Portland in 1911, and out of that came the Object of Rotary: The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: First: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

Second: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; Third: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life;

Fourth: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Sixty-five years later, RI adopted a concise definition of Rotary which we still use today: “Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.�

Below - of considerable interest regarding the vaccine-derived polio…

The GPEI has published an Interim guidance document on the use of Novel Oral Polio Vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) which is meant to provide context and policy guidance on the use of nOPV2 in response to Type 2 circulating Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus (cVDPV2) during the Initial Use Period. This document is an addendum to the “Standard Operating Procedures: Responding to a poliovirus event or outbreak”, Version 3.1’ (SOPs) (5). An excerpt from the document is printed below: Following the global certification of wild poliovirus type 2 (WPV2) eradication in 2015. the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) planned and implemented a global withdrawal of trivalent oral polio vaccine (tOPV), replacing it with bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV) in April-May 2016. Termed ‘the switch,’ this global effort impacted both country essential immunization systems and supplementary immunization activities (SIAs).

The GPEI anticipated a limited number of type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPVs) outbreaks emerging in the post-switch period could be controlled through supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) using Sabin OPV (e.g. mOPV2). However, inconsistent pre-switch intensification efforts to boost immunity against poliovirus type 2, a global IPV shortage in 2016-2018, and an uneven quality of outbreak response activities have resulted in considerably more VDPV2 emergences and cVDPV2 outbreaks than predicted.

In early 2020, the GPEI finalized a new strategy to control circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) and address the evolving polio epidemiology. The Strategy for the Response to Type 2 Circulating Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus 2020–2021 is offered as an addendum to the existing Polio Endgame Strategy 2019-2023 launched in May 2019(2).

The Polio Endgame Strategy 2019–2023 positioned the GPEI’s current five-year strategic period in relation to the dual emergencies facing the polio eradication effort: the programme must interrupt WPV1 and stop cVDPV transmission. In consideration of the potential long-term implications for cVDPV outbreaks, the Endgame Strategy signaled the importance of a contingency plan to mitigate the risk of cVDPVs through near-term interventions, emergency protocols and policy changes.

The cVDPV2 strategy entails strengthening the speed and quality of responses to cVDPV2 outbreaks, optimizing the management of available vaccine stocks and introducing an improved polio vaccine, novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2). nOPV2 is a modified version of the existing type 2 monovalent OPV (mOPV2), that has been shown in clinical trials to provide comparable protection against poliovirus while being more genetically stable and less likely to revert into a form which can cause paralysis. The vaccine’s increased genetic stability means there is a reduced risk of seeding new cVDPV2 outbreaks compared to mOPV2.

Therefore, in April 2020, the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on immunization (SAGE) endorsed the Initial Use Framework of nOPV2 under Emergency Use Listing (3,4). The initial use period is expected to last around three months after the first use of nOPV2 under the EUL. Click here to read more.

Fahima Ahmed Hassan is a 25-year-old community mobilizer who goes the extra mile to ensure parents of children under the age of five are informed of Somalia’s polio vaccination campaigns and are ready for their children to be vaccinated.

Fahima and the other mobilisers are from the local community and they lay the groundwork for vaccinators ahead of campaigns. They work tirelessly to reach every house, speaking to families to help them understand, trust, and accept the vaccine.

On a mid-October morning, children and their families are waiting anxiously. They have been informed, by Fahima and through loudspeaker announcements, that a team of vaccinators will be visiting their community.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, some people are concerned and worried about taking their children for vaccinations. They fear they might contract the virus or expose their children to it.

Together with her team, Fahima takes every precaution to keep herself and the community she serves protected.

She explains that it is critical to show the community that vaccination can go ahead while maintaining physical distancing, wearing protective masks and using hand sanitizer.

The Rotary Foundation Trustees approved the policy outlining the kinds of projects that may be eligible for Global Grants under the environmental area of focus approved June 26. The policy is still a work in progress.

Subject to approval by the RI Board, the Rotary Foundation trustees unanimously agreed to add the Environment as a seventh area of focus, effective 1 July 2021, and revised Rotary Foundation's mission statement to read: Our Mission: The Rotary Foundation helps Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty.

When someone asks you What is a Passport Club?

The District 6330 Passport Club is a new format of Rotary Club; one where the structure better suits the lives of those who maybe can’t meet on a weekly basis or make significant financial contributions but who still have a passion for what Rotary does best; doing good.

To facilitate this, the 6330 Passport Club conducts business electronically and offers several in-person opportunities per year. In lieu of weekly meetings, members are encouraged to engage in humanitarian service, however that works best for them!

The founding principle is simple: Make Rotary fit your life!

The Rotary District 6330 Passport Club members are full Rotary members, with the same privileges and rights as Rotarians who are members of traditional clubs.

Classifications Virtually all membership in Rotary is based upon a “classification.” Basically, a classification describes the distinct and recognized business or professional service that the Rotarian renders to society.

Our members who are on district committees Past President Allan Loiselle – District Treasurer Past President Allan is part of the District 6330 Finance Committee and is the district treasurer for 2020-21.

The Finance Committee is formed in accordance with the manual on Policies, Procedures and Resolutions, and performs the duties set out therein, including the preparation and recommendation to incoming Club Presidents, and directs the Treasurer in the implementation of the budget and other District finances.

In addition to working within the club and district, Past President Allan has been involved with the recent RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute) Part One online course and has led the class with the component on Ethics and Vocational Service which was part of Session Two of the Three-part course. Excellent!

The purpose of this committee is to award outbound academic scholarships to individuals who live, work, or go to school in District 6330, and to welcome the scholars coming to our District.
