August Message It starts with an Invitation!

We’ve all taken our own path to become a member of Rotary. Some of you joined because your father was a Rotarian. Some of us signed up because an employer tapped us on the shoulder and asked us to attend a meeting. Others became members only after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling made it possible. Yet each of us entered through one mechanism – an invitation.

An invitation that unlocks our imaginations and allows us to know that everything and anything is possible.

Each one of us has that same opportunity – the honour to extend an invitation.

It is awe-inspiring to imagine how we can look out across our communities and identify our future leaders. It’s often tempting to attract people who are exactly like us. It’s a special form of ingenuity to consider how people who are seemingly very different can, in fact, share our values and have some of those same talents, just waiting to be unleashed.

“Imagine, a world that deserves our best where we get up each day knowing that we can make a difference.”

It’s time for Rotary to take our next step in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across our organization.

Embracing an experience where people feel included is more than just making our membership numbers more diverse. It’s about making our meetings and events places where we can speak openly and honestly with each other, where our members feel welcome and safe. This means removing barriers for entry and opening doors for inclusion. Our values remain our strength – and our commitment to excellence requires us to maintain high standards for our members as well.

I believe we are all determined to advance DEI across Rotary. This is rooted in the deepest traditions of our organization, and it will ensue that we remain vibrant and relevant for decades to come.

A few years ago, our Rotary Board set the ambitious goal of increasing the share of female members to 30 percent by 2023. We have less than a year to go, but I believe we can meet and exceed this target.

We need Rotary leaders to rise from every continent, culture, and creed. We need young members and young thinkers to take on larger roles and responsibilities. We need to listen to new Rotary members just as keenly, and with as much respect, as those with many years of membership.

During our recent convention in Houston, we heard from astronauts about their journeys into space. We reflected upon a time in the 1960s when U.S. President John F. Kennedy urged the world to dream, with his declaration that we would “go to the moon [and do] other things, not because they are easy but because they are hard.”

Fully committing Rotary to DEI and meeting our ambitious membership targets may seem as unlikely as a moon shot. But I know that when people of action are committed to a big goal, we make it worth every ounce of our energy.

This list has been created to assist all Grant Administrators as they complete the various levels of the District Grant process. Most but not all of these items will apply to each and every Grant.

Before you submit a Proposal – Have you read the Rotary Foundation Term and Conditions Reference?

Did you review the Grants 101 Training presentation?

Has the Club Board of Directors approved the project?

Do you have estimates of the cost of the project?

Submitting the Proposal – What is the name of the project?

Brief description with What, When and Where (400 characters maximum)?

Add the Estimate Budget in USD. Click Submit – An Automated message will be sent to the District Grant Administrator.

Open the Proposal.

Complete the Budget with the expenses in local dollars, convert to USD as needed.

Add income figures in local dollars, convert to USD as needed.

These MUST balance.

Always use the current RI Exchange Rate to convert CAD to USD. Submitting the Application – Do you have a current quotation or estimate for all items of the project?

Are taxes and freight included?

Do you have a letter from the beneficiaries approving of the project?

Are all questions in the application answered?

Is there any change in the project from the proposal?

Are there any changes in the budget from the proposal?

Contact Myrna to review the application and seek approval.

Submitting the Individual Project Report a.k.a. The Final Report – Are all the questions in the Individual Project Report answered?

Are all invoices uploaded to the documents section?

Are all receipts included?

Is the Club cancelled cheque included ?

The Rotary Foundation and Rotary clubs around the world have hurried to provide funds, supplies, and services to Ukrainians displaced by the war.

The Rotary Foundation has raised more than $15 million in contributions that are already helping provide people in Ukraine with essential items such as water, food, shelter, medicine, and clothing.

Donations made to the Disaster Response Fund after 30 April will be available to all communities around the world that need assistance recovering from disasters.

Rotary members and other volunteers pack donated supplies at a rented warehouse in Zamosc, Poland, a major hub for refugees and a centralized coordination location for aid from clubs in Europe.

A family that stands by you Soon after Russia invaded Ukraine, Iryna Bushmina fled her home in Kyiv and journeyed to Vienna, Austria, staying with Rotary members along the way. Their generosity inspired Bushmina, a member of the Rotaract Club of Kyiv-City, to organize a larger-scale relief effort — and now, she works with Rotaract Europe to find shelter for thousands of refugees through a website called United for Peace.

"I used to just say that Rotary International is a big family. Now I really believe it," Bushmina says. "And I am convinced that this is a family that will stand by you."

Music for peace Olena Bondarenko Hiraishi grew up in the city of Dnipro in eastern Ukraine. Her father is Ukrainian, and her mother is Russian. At the age of 21, she moved to Hiroshima, Japan, where she met her husband, Masashi, a member of the Rotary Club of Hiroshima Southwest. When the war against Ukraine broke out, Satoshi Saginaw, then governor of District 2710, invited her to talk with the Hiroshima Southwest club. Bondarenko Hiraishi connected the Japanese club with Rotary leaders in Ukraine to assist in the relief work.

Her youngest son, who studies the violin, also joined the effort — through music. He and a pianist friend performed at a series of chamber music concerts in the spring, and the proceeds have gone to support Ukrainians.

"I think music is a universal language that can be understood by people from any country," she says. "My son says he will play it with the utmost prayer for peace."

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has been informed of a case of paralytic polio in an unvaccinated individual in Rockland County, New York, United States.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are coordinating with New York State health authorities on their investigation. Initial sequencing confirmed by CDC indicates that the case is Type 2 VDPV. Any form of poliovirus anywhere is a threat to children everywhere. It is critical that the GPEI Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026 is fully resourced and fully implemented everywhere, to ensure a world free of all forms of poliovirus can be achieved.

We are calling on every single Rotary member to take action and be a part of the fight to end polio, helping to raise $50 million per year for polio eradication.

Rotarians IMAGINE and Implement Climate Solutions Imagine a Positive Solutions Mindset

Recently, we all have been exposed to frightening stories and reports of environmental disasters, and sometimes experience them for ourselves. It is easy to become despondent in the face of all these doom and gloom stories.

How can we learn from these stories, yet rise above them and go on to take meaningful actions and projects as ESRAG members and environmental leaders in our clubs and Districts?

I suggest that one approach is to adopt a Positive Solutions Mindset.

We’ve all been shocked recently to read of environmental disasters in many countries across the world: record temperatures in the United Kingdom, bush fires in Spain and Portugal and heatwaves in the United States. In my country, Australia, we’ve had several major floods in New South Wales and, most sobering of all, this week the Australian Government released the “Australia, State of The Environment Report 2021.

According to this report, “Overall, the state and trend of the environment of Australia are poor and deteriorating as a result of increasing pressures from climate change, habitat loss, invasive species, pollution and resource extraction.” In similar vein, the IUCN has added the migratory monarch butterfly to the Red List of endangered species, due to a decline in population numbers over the past 10 years.

It’s very easy to be dragged down psychologically by all these very important, nonetheless negative news stories. As the new Chair of ESRAG, I’d like us to remain aware and UP TO DATE with the stories, yet not let them define who we are or what we do.

I encourage you all to adopt a positive mindset that focuses on solutions, not despondancy. There are so many good news stories about the environment in the community and within Rotary and ESRAG, where people are taking actions to address some of the serious environment problems facing their region and the world. Let me share a few of them from Australia and the US

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) in Health Care Facilities (HCF): Rotary Clubs Next Challenge

By Ron Denham, Chair Emeritus, WASH Rotary Action Group An Alarming Situation Most of us, faced with the prospect of a trip to the hospital, anticipate safe treatment and (hopefully) a swift recovery. But in Sub-Saharan Africa, you could well face the possibility of contracting a disease or an infection. In the most serious cases, departure can be in a coffin.

Lack of water, sanitation, hygiene, waste management and cleaning services poses a threat to every patient. In this dangerous Covid-19 era, it exacerbates the spread of infection and undermines every effort to improve maternal and child health.

Data released by the WHO and UNICEF show that an estimated 900 million people must use health care facilities (HCFs) lacking any water service; 1.5 billion use facilities with no adequate sanitation service. Many more use HCFs lacking hand hygiene service and safe waste management.

To illustrate: Water: • In the least developed countries, only 55% of HCFs had basic water service • 14% of HCFs accessed water supply from off the premises • 12% had NO water service • 896 million people had NO water service at their HCF Sanitation • In sub-Saharan Africa, only 23% of HCFs had basic sanitation.

• 21% of HCFs globally had no sanitation service • 40% of HCFs in Central and Southern Asia lacked any sanitation service.

• More than 1.5 billion people had NO sanitation service at their HCF Hygiene • 16% of HCFs globally had NO hygiene service—no handwashing facilities with soap • More than half of HCFs lacked hygiene service available at point of care.

And, data from the Republic of Tanzania, including Zanzibar, and Uganda confirm these impressions: • • •

Only 44% of HCFs have functioning toilets.

Only 68 % have access to a water supply but that is often unreliable and inconsistent.

42% of facilities with delivery rooms have no handwashing facilities with soap and water.

Truly a grim picture.

Added to these shortcomings, more than half of HCFs lacked any waste management services.

On June 29, Lynn Coates, Rick and Sue Storie, and Jessica Morrow all met at Mariann Timmers' home for a coffee and sweet treat, some lively conversation and a lesson on folding milk bags.

We picked up more items for recycling to London Ontario Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Thanks Mariann and Jessica for the treats! Delicious!

PANCAKE BREAKFAST OFFERS NO “BATTER” WAY TO WATCH MACKINAC BOAT RACE FIVE SARNIA ROTARY CLUBS REPRESENTED At the Annual Pancake Breakfast under the bridge on July 16, five Rotary clubs were represented assisting with this annual tradition. Rotary Club of Sarnia has been organizing in this community event for over 40 years.

The Rotary Club of Sarnia was ‘flipping’ excited for the return of its Annual Pancake Breakfast, alongside the Port Huron to Mackinac Boat Race.

Rotarian Kitty volunteered from 6:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the event alongside Rotarians from the three Sarnia terra clubs and the Global Passport club.

FOR STUDENTS who are interested in participating in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program Candidates are ages 15-18 and are leaders in their schools and communities.

Talk to your parents/guardians and get their approval and support.

District 6330 is a member of the Central States Rotary Youth Exchange (CSRYE) organization, which is an incorporated joint program among 20 Rotary districts located in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, USA, and Ontario, Canada.

Jean sees himself as an ambassador for kindness—he jumps in wherever he sees a need, whether it’s collecting and donating 100,000 meals to food insecure families across the country or getting 500,000 books to kids with none at home.
