International President, 2018-19 – Mark Maloney RC of Decatur, Alabama, USA August message 2019 During 2019-2020, I am encouraging Rotarians and Rotaractors to grow Rotary. We must grow our service, we must grow the impact of our projects, but, most importantly, we must grow our membership so that we can achieve more. Let us try a new approach to membership, one that is more organized and strategic. I am asking every club to form an active membership committee consisting of people of different backgrounds who will look methodically at the leadership of the community. Your club's membership committee will then apply Rotary's classification system — designed to ensure that the range of professions in your community is well represented — to identify potential leaders with the skill, the talent, and the character that will strengthen your club. If your club's membership committee is unsure how to proceed, look to the club membership committee checklist on Rotary.org for clearly defined steps to organizing its work. How else will we connect to grow Rotary? We will also form new types of clubs — either independent clubs or satellite clubs — with different meeting experiences and engaging service opportunities, not just where there is no Rotary, but also where Rotary is already thriving.

No Rotary club in the world can possibly serve all segments of its community. Therefore, we must organize new clubs to engage the community leaders who cannot connect with our existing clubs. Growing Rotary is all about taking the connections that make our organization unique in the world and strengthening and multiplying them. Let us commit ourselves to growing Rotary and to welcoming the next diverse generation of women and men as Rotary Connects the World. Shekhar Mehta of India selected to be 2021-22 Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta, of the Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, West Bengal, India, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International for 2021-22. Shekhar Mehta, of the Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, West Bengal, India, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International for 2021-22. He will be declared the president-nominee on 1 October if no challenging candidates have been suggested. Mehta acknowledges that current membership trends are a challenge and says that membership development should be Rotary’s highest priority. He believes that focusing on regional plans, successfully transitioning Rotaractors into Rotary clubs, and increasing diversity and female members could yield a 5 percent net growth in membership each year. “A major brainstorming is needed to find effective solutions suited to different areas of the world,” says Mehta. He adds that regional ethos and culture have to be taken into account to find localized solutions, as “one size does not fit all.” He believes Rotary can extend to new geographical areas and countries. As a strong proponent of Rotary’s strategic plan, Mehta says he will encourage clubs to use action plans and reinforce the core values of Rotary. Mehta says Rotary needs to become more contemporary and adaptable by focusing on partnerships with governments and corporations, expanding partnerships with organizations that specialize in Rotary’s areas of focus, and investing in technology. Mehta, an accountant, is chair of the Skyline Group, a real estate development company he founded. He is also a director of Operation Eyesight Universal (India), a Canada-based organization. Mehta has been actively involved in disaster response and is a trustee of ShelterBox, UK. After the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, he helped build nearly 500 homes for families affected by the disaster. Mehta pioneered a program that has performed more than 1,500 life-changing heart surgeries in South Asia. He is also the architect of the TEACH Program, which promotes literacy throughout India and has reached thousands of schools. A Rotary member since 1984, Mehta has served Rotary as director, member or chair of several committees, zone coordinator, training leader, member of The Rotary Foundation Cadre of Technical Advisers, and district governor. He is also the chair of Rotary Foundation (India). Mehta has received Rotary’s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Awards. He and his wife, Rashi, are Major Donors and members of the Bequest Society. “Our area is a pretty difficult terrain because we live in the water and it is not easy for the teams coming from outside the community to gain access. So, the (hand-drawn) maps make it possible for us to identify areas we have yet to reach during the immunization exercise�, says Peter Idowu, a veteran community mobilizer and team supervisor in Makoko — a riverine shanty town located on the coast of mainland Lagos city, southwest Nigeria. Native to the village, Peter is the man to go to whenever the polio immunization teams face challenges navigating the waterways or the community. The sprawling water city Makoko is a slum located across the Third Mainland Bridge on the lagoon. It is a largely low-income community with half the population on water and the other half on land. Informal, makeshift houses with corrugated iron roofs sit precariously atop stilts. Down below, narrow wooden boats act as a form of aquatic taxi ferrying goods and people around the bustling community. Nobody knows the exact

population of this slum district of Lagos, but it is estimated to be as high as 100 000. It is mostly a fishing community inhabited by the Egun people.
“My goal is to see that all the kids in our community are immunized and live healthy lives. That is why I engage our teams in sensitizing parents all the time on the importance of routine immunization and the dangers of polio. As a member of the community and with a passion of becoming a health worker myself, I kept on mobilizing our people for easy accessibility, because our language is different from Yoruba and most of the Polio teams can’t speak the language. It is always easy with me being in the Polio team as our people will readily accept the vaccine without rejecting,” says Peter. Nigeria is the only country in Africa and one of the only three in the world endemic to wild poliovirus, alongside Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nigeria is also affected by circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) outbreaks. UNICEF works closely together with Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), key polio partners and the Nigerian government. There is a vast network of over 20 000 community mobilizers focusing on demand creation and improving health-seeking behaviors of caregivers.

An update! Thank you to Club Member Adriennne and to Crock A Doodle (inside the Sarnia Real Canadian Superstore) for putting on our Paint Party Fundraiser!!! Proceeds from the event are headed to Shelterbox to support them in their efforts in Mozambique/Zimbabwe as they continue to deal with the aftermath of Cyclone Idai. A note from Rotary club member, Lynne Ternosky A bit of Rotary news to share‌ Rotary Club of Stratford presented to Michelle Nangami a bursary at her recent high school graduation. Michelle came from Uganda via Kenya to Stratford three years ago and graduated with 85% average while supporting herself in school and living with her three sisters and new niece in a shelter for part of the year. It has not been an easy start for her. Rotary E-Club of Canada One sponsored her to a Rotary Leadership training in London a few years ago and this has inspired her. She hopes to attend Fanshawe college next year in business studies. She also received a school board scholarship to help her continue her studies. It’s so exciting to accompany many newcomers as they work out how to move forward and find their way in Canada independently but with our friendship and a hand up. If I am here, I can hear from the people from 53 countries represented in Stratford and try to inspire them as they find their place as newcomers and overcome adversities. Each month, and sometimes daily, I hear from newcomers sharing their journeys, challenges, and dreams. Having done a lot of travelling, I am now glad to be able to give a hand up to those looking for a friend or needing inspiration in a new land, language, and culture. I hope Michelle, age 19, will adapt in the "big city" of London as she reaches out on her own next year to try to achieve her next goal. Thanks for knowledge and support from our friends Rotarian Joan and Rotarian Sue at district as she sought help in housing and transportation and budget plans for next year, even leads on bursaries, a new idea for her to learn about. Michelle thanks us for encouragement when others just told her there was no way for her to do this in her situation. Rotarians are problem solvers, and this opportunity to teach newcomers how to problem solve and meet like-minded people is a great help to all. If any of these endeavours or contacts might be of interest to any one of you to explore, just let me know. Thank you to all of you for offering me the hand of friendship this year as I transferred back to District 6330 and the new passport club. Happy Rotarying,

2019 ROTARY PANCAKE BREAKFAST A 'GREAT SUCCESS' Hundreds of hungry watchers of the annual Port Huron to Mackinac race gathered on Saturday morning, July 20 in Point Edward’s Waterfront Park for a feast of pancakes and sausages in one of the area’s most popular fundraising events in support of the club’s community initiatives. For more than 35 years, club members have been organizing the event, with dozens of members and friends, including members from other affiliated Rotary clubs in the region, pitching in to set up, cook and serve, and clean up after the 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. lines ended.

Over $10,000 in tickets were sold for the breakfast, said organizers. That number, while not a record, is very close to being so. In a new twist this year, anyone who brought their own cutlery or plate as a way of “going green” was eligible to win a tree, donated by DeGroot’s Nurseries. Jane Pickard was the winner of the tree. Next year’s Mackinac Race and Pancake Breakfast will take place on Saturday, July 11, 2020. Several Passport Club members attended this event and helped – an excellent shared project!
Also, on Thursday evening, July 18, David and Tanya hosted a lovely get-together for Passport Club members at their home in Point Edward. Several Rotarians, not just from our Passport Club, were able to participate and enjoyed excellent fellowship!
