IMPORTANT ROTARY INFORMATION 2019-20 RI PRESIDENTIAL THEME
International President, 2019-20 – Mark Maloney RC of Decatur, Alabama, USA April message 2020 I spend a lot of time thinking of family, not just my own or the extended family of Rotary, but also the families we are helping in the communities we serve. In many parts of the world, mothers and children face challenges to survive that most of us will never comprehend. According to the World Health Organization, the risk of a woman in a low-income country dying during pregnancy or childbirth, or from related causes, is about 120 times higher than that of a woman living in a high-income country. It is encouraging that infant mortality rates are declining globally, yet 4 million babies annually still die within the first year of life. In April, Rotary turns its attention to maternal and child health. And when we think of what we can do to help, we can look to clubs like the Rotaract Club of Calabar South-CB, Nigeria, for inspiration. It teamed up with the Rotaract Club of Canaan City (CB) in a program focused on educating mothers on best practices to prevent infant mortality and promote postnatal health for themselves and their babies. In Bangladesh, the Rotary Club of Dhaka North provides free surgeries and medicine to pregnant women who cannot afford the hospital costs associated with giving birth. I encourage you and your club to go to ideas.rotary.org to find projects like these that are helping to save mothers and children.

We also have witnessed how millions of people — families and entire communities — have been ripped away from their homes because of conflict, poverty, and disasters during the past decade. But Rotary has not stood idly by during the global refugee crisis. During Rotary Day at the United Nations last November, we honored a Rotary Peace Fellow and five Rotarians who are taking action to help refugee communities. Among them was Ilge Karancak-Splane of the Rotary Club of Monterey Cannery Row, California. After visiting several tent camps in Turkey, she led a Rotary project that collected 1,000 pairs of children's shoes and socks for families in the camps and, later, led a global grant project to help educate refugee children. In March, Gay and I had the privilege of visiting a tent camp in Torbalı and seeing firsthand the good work that Rotarians from Turkey and California were accomplishing with Syrian refugees. The challenges faced by mothers, their children, and refugee communities around the world are daunting. But when we remember our greatest strength — how Rotary Connects the World — we can begin to find solutions. Through our creativity, our resources, our dedication, and our networks, Rotary can and will open opportunities to face these challenges. Your health and safety are always our top priorities. Look below for information on Rotary activities that may be affected. We will update this page as new information becomes available. In the near term, Rotary International recommends that districts and Rotary and Rotaract clubs meet virtually, cancel, or postpone meetings and events following the advice of national and local health officials.

Rotary encourages members and their families to take precautions to protect themselves from contracting the virus by: washing your hands often and thoroughly, putting distance between yourself and others if COVID-19 is spreading in your community, and staying home if you are sick. ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION We regret to announce that the Rotary International Convention, scheduled for 6-10 June 2020 in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, has been canceled due to the ongoing threat of COVID-19. As the virus continues to spread rapidly around the world, we made the difficult decision to cancel our annual convention to protect the health and safety of our members, staff, attendees, and the local Honolulu community. Learn more. OTHER MAJOR ROTARY EVENTS To protect the health of all involved, Rotary has canceled the presidential conference scheduled for 9 May at the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, Italy. People who registered will receive an email from the organizers with additional information and details about refunds. CLUB AND DISTRICT MEETINGS In the near term, Rotary International recommends that districts and Rotary and Rotaract clubs meet virtually, cancel, or postpone meetings or events following the advice of national and local health officials. Please continue to follow the guidelines set by the World Health Organization and your national, regional, or local health authorities to protect your health and safety. If feasible, conduct meetings online or by phone. Closely examine your personal circumstances, including any health issues, when you consider travel and participation in events. GRANT OPTIONS TO RESPOND TO COVID-19 As people of action, Rotary members want to find ways to respond to COVID-19, which is now a global pandemic, and to help people affected by it. We are living in rapidly changing environment that needs bold imaginative and timely interventions. What may be right today may well be wrong or different tomorrow so we need to be agile, responsive and willing to change as our communities need us more than ever before. Rotary International is Monitoring the impact of the coronavirus (CONVID19) outbreak on events and operations and has issued the following guidance note. Click link below. https://www.rotary.org/en/rotary-monitors-coronavirus-outbreak As an International District we are closely monitoring the situation and also looking carefully at the advice offered by RI and both the Canadian and US authorities. Our Lead Team is meeting weekly and more frequently as necessary to ensure we can provide the optimum support to our members and clubs in these rapidly changing times. In their efforts to maintain engagement during times when clubs have postponed or cancelled in-person meetings, projects or social events, we have developed this guide with ideas and strategies for Club Leaders to consider. The following is an offering of support, not a requirement. Club Leaders are encouraged to consult with their boards to assess and determine which strategies will be useful on the local level. None of these strategies is a replacement for timely, transparent and regular communication with your members about your plans to continue modified operations throughout this time. Be sure that all committees and leaders in your club are equipped with consistent messaging to minimize confusion to your members and to streamline communications about changes as they arise. Consider sending brief weekly updates to your members or provide a timeline for when decisions will be reviewed and modified if necessary. Have a great strategy that’s working for you? UNICEF’S Response to COVID-19 / WASH Resources UNICEF is responding to the outbreak by focusing on limiting human-to-human transmission and mitigating the impact of the outbreak on the health system and affected communities. I've included some of the WASH-specific activities the organization has undertaken below: • •

Creation of child-friendly materials to ensure proper handwashing and protection against the virus (attached). Helping to feed the community in Imlay City, Michigan 6330 Passport member Joyce (second from left) with great friends at the recent “mass feeding” at St Paul’s in Imlay City. In early March, the group were getting ready to fill 190 boxes with meat, cheese, fruit, veggies, breads, cereal, desserts, etc. and put them into waiting cars. Joyce says it was an honour to participate. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church faily sure know how to get things done. Thank for all you do for our community!
From club member Rotarian/Rotaractor Kurtis Lush I’m going to cut to the chase because there’s no other way to discuss this- I am stuck here in Arequipa Peru for the foreseeable future. Peru shut down its borders last night to combat the virus and declared a national emergency. For context the country only discovered their first case the day after I arrived last week and now there are over 70 cases. We are quite far from Lima (the city with international flights) so any attempt to get out last night would not have worked. We would like to come home but understand that is not a reality. I am happy to let everyone know that I am safe and doing as well as I can be. I am very lucky to be travelling alongside three amazing people who got to work with me last night and into today to secure a great apartment and to prepare everything we need to ride through

this storm. We have worked to get in touch with the Canadian embassy here but many Canadians are in the same boat we are and we understand things are going to take time. Till a solution comes I am here and working to make the best out of this situation. Like many in Canada, I am in quarantine as well here and we are just living day by day to figure out what is in store for us next. Till then we are documenting each day so we can always remember what happened the time we got stuck in Peru. (P.s- the photo is from the bedroom draw when we determined who got to choose what room at our apartment. The sheet says “bedroom draw” and the numbers 1-4 were inside the bag. I won choice #1!)
Hey everyone, It’s day 5 of the national emergency in Arequipa but I got something else on my mind. I am writing today to ask for people’s help with something back in Canada. Many of you know I work at the Inn of the Good Shepherd in Sarnia, Ontario. For almost 10 years I’ve been fortunate to serve, alongside countless staff and volunteers, those in need of food, shelter and other life necessities with dignity. My job at the Inn is to help coordinate food distribution to programs and agencies in our community. This equates to over 45,000 lbs of food distributed a month and that number grows each year. A lot of food comes and goes out of our building. I am currently here but my heart never leaves that building. The Inn is hurting right now and I am in pain watching this unfold and recognizing there is not much I can do except for this post. Many of the Inn’s major Easter food drives have been/are being postponed/cancelled during an absolutely critical time for the Inn. This is completely understandable under the global reality we are currently in; however, the vulnerable population in Sarnia-Lambton are scared, like many of us are at this time, and they need organizations like the Inn to help them live day-by-day through this crisis. The Inn will not stop its mission in a time of crisis because people need our help and that’s what we aim to do. The food we get at Easter usually helps us sustain our programs through slower donation months in the summertime. With the demand for services increasing as this crisis progresses, along with having our food drives stalled, we are in a vulnerable position of shortages in our food programs. I’ve come to know Sarnia as an extremely caring community and I am proud to be a citizen of it. I know as well that we all need to be mindful of our own protection at this time; however, if there was ever a time that individual actions can collectively make a big difference, this is it and here is how. If you’re at the grocery store and have a few extra dollars to spare for food donations or have extra food in your shelves you’d like to donate, I ask you to please consider making a donation to the Inn. People can drop off donations to our main building location (115 John Street) between 8:30am- 4:30pm Monday-Friday and our emergency shelter locations at 950 Confederation (The Lodge Adult Shelter) and 444 Kathleen Ave (The Haven Youth Shelter).

People can as well drop off donations to our collection bins at the Superstore, No Frills, Metro, Ken’s Value Mart, Food-land Corunna and Bright’s Grove, the Goodwill and the Sarnia Firehalls. For cash donations, people can go to the Inn’s website www.theinnsarnia.ca . Every extra pound of food and dollar donated makes a world of difference.
To finish the update, right now we’re using a temporary shelter till we hear the Canadian government’s plan. They are trying to tell us more is coming, but I think they’ve begun to run into some hurdles after the first three flights have occurred. If the government is going to take a while, we’re going to hunt for a new apartment and hopefully have a setup like we did in Arequipa. If we know there’s a good shot at getting a flight quickly, we’ll just keep doing temporary solutions till we can fly out. Once I’m home, though, I know I’ll be out of commission for at least two weeks, depending on what the government decides I respect that they’re doing their best to be careful and I am just looking forward to continuing my lockdown in the comfort of my own house. By the time I am out of the lockdown life here and in Canada, it sill be over a month at least so far.
And finally, from Kurtis on March 30 Had some of the most nerve-wrecking minutes of my life an hour back but I’m happy to report the boys and I were able to get booked onto this Wednesday’s rescue flight from Lima!
