IMPORTANT ROTARY INFORMATION 2018-19 RI PRESIDENTIAL THEME
International President, 2018-19 – Barry Rassin (Bahamas) April Message 2019 Every two minutes, somewhere in the world, a woman dies from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. And babies whose mothers die within the first six weeks of their lives are far more likely to die themselves than babies whose mothers survive. As I've traveled around the world as president of Rotary, I've met families for whom these aren't simply tragic statistics. But I've also met people who are devoting themselves to helping mothers and children — and because of them, I'm hopeful. And because many of those people are Rotarians, I'm also proud. April is Maternal and Child Health Month in Rotary, so it's a perfect time to tell you about some things Rotarians are doing that will make you proud too. Last fall, I paid a visit to a hospital in the town of Jekabpils in Latvia. It's a modern hospital, and the doctors and nurses there are caring, dedicated, and skilled. But despite all their hard work, the maternal mortality rate at the hospital had remained stubbornly high, due to a factor that was beyond their control: a lack of vital diagnostic equipment and even basic items like incubators. And that's where Rotary came in. Twenty-one clubs from around the world joined forces for a global grant that provided what the hospital required. And in September, when I walked into the maternity ward there, I saw

state-of-the-art equipment, and I met patients who were getting the care that they needed — and that every mother and child in the world deserves to have. In Brazil, club members worked with fellow Rotarians in Japan on a global grant project that dramatically increased the capacity of an overstretched neonatal intensive care unit. New incubators, monitors, and other equipment have enabled the local hospital to save many more babies' lives each year. And in Mongolia, a vocational training team from New Zealand organized instruction in emergency response techniques for doctors and midwives, set up a program that taught midwives modern best practices, and researched and wrote a culturally relevant childbirth education manual. Between 2013, when the team first went to Mongolia, and 2017, the neonatal mortality rate in the country fell from 11.2 to 9.1 per 1,000 births, and the maternal mortality rate has decreased as well. That's what I mean when I talk about transformational service, and it's what Rotarians do best. Because of our networks, which span the globe; our community presence, which allows us to see what's most needed; and our expertise, which encompasses countless skills and professions, we're able to serve in a manner that has no equal. And we're able to Be the Inspiration as we help those who need us most. On March 2019, the WHO’s Southeast Asia Region marked five years since being declared wild polio-free, with the last case in the Region detected in India on 13 January 2011. The five-year anniversary of SEARO certification celebrated success in India and across countries of the region, showcasing how countries have used the skills, knowledge, and infrastructure built up by the polio programme after eradication and highlight lessons learned from the Region that are now being applied in other parts of the world. Summary of new viruses this week: Pakistan – two wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV-1) cases and 15 WPV1positive environmental samples. The Seminar combines lectures and discussions on career knowledge, international understanding, service opportunities, small group leadership and team development experiences and exercises. ROTARY INSPIRATION One Woman who cares influences the lives of many Some years ago, Vicki Horsfield, an educator from Montreal, travelled to Guatemala and was appalled at the fate of the children of the poorest. So, she decided to make a life change and moved there to establish a school for the children of indigent families, Creating Opportunities for Guatemalans in San Antonio Aguas Calientes.
Her creation is an after-school where about 45 students come after their regular school hours to get help with homework and be given additional math and an hour of English instruction — and it works! The children are ‘blooming’ and making great progress in their studies. The English lessons are to give the children a second language. The unemployment rate in the country is close to 40 per cent, but with English, they have very good chances of employment in the tourist industry once they leave high school. Most of the children’s parents are illiterate, with incomes well below the poverty line, and cannot help their children with homework. They live in small, one-room houses, with no electricity, and many of them — up to recently — had no stove. They would prepare the family meals on an open fire on the floor of their house, resulting in lung ailments for their children. Just recently, Canadian Rotarians from the Rotary Clubs of Montreal-Lakeshore, MontrealWest & NDG, and Hawkesbury completed a community project under the guidance of Rotarian Vicki Horsfield Horsfield, to improve living conditions in the homes of her students. Twenty homes received water filtration urns to provide potable water (the children and their families were frequently sick from water-borne microbes and viruses), and 24 families received propane stoves to prevent

smoke in their homes as well as the need for frequent trips by mothers and children up the mountains to gather wood for cooking. Plus, some families who had no toilets, have had them installed. The families have all agreed to regularly deposit small amounts of money at the school to ensure they can pay for the next propane fill-up and after about two years, a new ceramic filter for their potable water containers. The project also included a computer printer and some needed school furniture. Today, there is so much negative news in the media that it is refreshing to find out what one woman, who cares, can do to influence the lives of so many. Rotary for Newbies and everyone! Rotary District 6330 Passport Club “Rotary for Newbies” was held in Grand Bend in the home of Passport Member Mary Ruston and PDG Martin Ward on Sunday, March 24, 2019. PDG Martin Ward led a presentation and discussion to help strengthen members knowledge concerning Rotary’s Vision Statement, 4 Way Test, Areas Of Focus, Avenues Of Service, The Foundation and The Learning Centre. Lunch was served before the meeting so there was also time for fellowship and sharing. Here are some photos:

Rotary HUB meeting in London – March 31 Rotarians Lynne Ternosky, Rose Saunders, Rick Storie, and Sue Storie enjoyed Sunday afternoon, March 31, in London discussing District 6330 clubs and projects. Lynne shared information about international projects she has been involved with, and we look forward to her expertise in writing grant applications. Rose was interested in the Burton Rotary connection with avoidable blindness and will be collecting eye glasses for them. We discussed attending other clubs to form relationships and information about their projects. The first clubs we plan to attend together will be our sponsor club, The St Thomas Railway City Rotary Club. We will also visit the Rotary Club of London North, who are helping us send students to RYLA as a charter gift for the club. EXCITING MAKE-UPS! One of the advantages offered to all Rotarians is the chance to visit any other Rotary club in the world. This is particularly helpful while travelling! Members should make a point of visiting other Rotary clubs to meet new friends and share experiences.

Tanya and David recently visited with the founding members of a new Satellite Club of the Rotary Club of the Lowcountry-Beaufort, South Carolina.
They were able to hear the club’s plans for their plans for the newest club in District 7770 and they shared ideas and strategies from our own 6330 Passport Club. Both Tanya and David will be watching the progress of the future Rotary Club of Port Royal, and they look forward to visiting again!
