ermatology is rarely one-sizefits-all, and that outlook should begin the moment you step into a clinic. Rather than focusing on any single procedure, our approach is to select and combine treatments thoughtfully based on each patient’s skin, anatomy, and goals.” “One of our most significant milestones since opening has been the creation of Precision Skin Care Aesthetics, a medical spa directly connected to our dermatology practice,” adds Kandula. “We are thrilled to have Bailey, our licensed esthetician, as part of the PSC team. pace is the place for Impossible Sensing, a St. Louis-based startup that provides optical technology designed to work in extreme environments. Located in the city’s Cortex Innovation District, the company – founded by Pablo Sobron in 2016 – uses technological advancements to help customers achieve precise measurements and control processes needed to plan their projects. Its clients include prominent organizations involved in space exploration and environmental monitoring. Born in Spain, Sobron came to St. Louis for a postdoctoral position at Washington University. Two years later, he went to work for the Canadian Space Agency; his career then led him to NASA and Silicon Valley. Disenfranchised, he knew he wanted to do something fresh. In addition to being home to “great talent,” St. Louis is relatively affordable, Sobron says. “I realized that if I wanted to follow my passion and build hardware or big machines, California was not the place to do it,” he adds. “I still had connections in St. Louis and decided to start my own company here.”
Today, Impossible Sensing doesn’t just “reach for the stars,” Sobron says. “It also works to improve life on Earth.” The company develops solutions to challenges on our planet, including smart sensors engineered to operate in the most demanding conditions. Seeing St. Louis as a “gateway to space,” Sobron is focused on the photo courtesy of Impossible Sensing future as his company strives to make missions to the moon and Mars a reality. “We are working on going back to the moon [to mine] resources there that will help us colonize the solar system by eventually going to Mars. I think it’s what most people think is going to happen, and now NASA finally has aligned with that priority,” he says. With six employees spread across the region and the globe, Impossible Sensing can respond quickly to new demands. “We have been working together for so long that we can now deliver projects in weeks. … We are a hyper-focused company with people who know how to work on their own, work with customers, and … get [done] what they need built,” Sobron says. From expanding humanity’s footprint in space to tackling climate change and exploring the ocean’s depths on planet Earth, Sobron sees opportunities for St. Louis to help develop solutions. “I like the challenges that nobody’s taking on because they’re too hard or too expensive,” he says. “Thankfully, we’ve built credibility with NASA, so we can invent new things. … I’m going to keep using that engine of space as a driver for invention that can solve problems in energy, agriculture, and mining – both on Earth and the moon as we push forward with exploration.”

mericans spend about $60 billion per year on supplements, according to the 2024 National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements’ director’s report. This huge industry is driven by several factors including the basic desire to improve health and longevity. But are all the capsules, tablets, and tinctures really making us healthier? That depends, and it requires more than a quick online search to figure out, according to local experts. “Always have a conversation with your doctor first,” says Dr. Puja Natesan, a family physician with Mercy Primary Care. “For most healthy adults, routine use of many supplements has not been shown to prevent disease. Vitamin D is a good example. Not everyone needs it, but people who are deficient can benefit.” Dr. Kathryn Wagner, a chiropractor certified in functional medicine with Mercy Integrative Medicine, agrees. “We see patients taking supplements because friends recommend them, or because the supplements claim they will help with certain symptoms,” Wagner says. “Many supplements should not be used with certain medications or health conditions.”
Another issue with supplement use is the ever-changing advice surrounding it. “Changes in recommendation for vitamin use in cognitive health … shift in response to better quality studies,” says Dr. Jamil Neme, a family physician with SSM Health SLUCare Physician Group. “Vitamin supplements are not without risk, as there isn’t a standard regulation on production.” But does the typical American diet provide what most people need in terms of proper nutrition? “We should focus on good fats and proteins and try to avoid trans fats,” Neme says. “And with 100% certainty, everyone should be incorporating resistance training and aerobic exercise.” Neme’s best biohack? Good sleep. If you do decide to try a supplement, use caution when choosing a brand. “When considering information online, it is helpful to ask: ‘Is the author trying to sell me something?’ If yes, it is not inherently bad information, but you need to be careful,” Wagner says. “And be skeptical of red flags: any product that claims to ‘cure,’ ‘treat,’ or ‘prevent’ a disease; words like ‘miracle’ or ‘clinically proven;’ celebrity endorsements; or a website that’s one long sales pitch,” Natesan adds, noting that products promising weight loss, sexual enhancement, and body building tend to have the most contaminants. There’s no magic pill that will make someone live a long, healthy life without dedication to the basics of good health: diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management. e return to our series on trees in this month’s column, focusing our attention now on one of the most popular flowering types. It all started with a small native tree called redbud, or Cercis canadensis. You know, the one that blooms particularly early, before the leaves pop, and paints our roadside woodlands with a strong lavender brush. Keen observers picked out wild variants of the species and have since used them to prolifically produce a multitude of striking cultivars. Its original, white-flowered form has led to several more selections. But I think the white redbud is one of my most favorite trees, and I have planted it in every garden I’ve started over the decades. It forces nicely and is dramatic in floral arrangements. Other color selections include: ‘Cotton Candy:’ very pale pink ‘Rubye Atkkinson:’ very rich pink ‘Luscious Lavender:’ a bit more assertive ‘Oklahoma Sparkler:’ dark lavender with glossy leaves ‘Appalachian Red:’ bright fuchsia red In 1902, a wild collected double-flowered form was found and named ‘Flame.’ It has been used in the breeding program at North Carolina State University to produce two magnificent double-flowered forms called ‘Pink Pompoms’ and ‘White Pompoms.’ They double down on the petal count and start looking more like Japanese cherries. There’s a subspecies of Cercis called texensis that has a white-flowered form known by the name ‘Texas White.’ Other fancy forms of this species include ‘Gilded Hearts,’ with golden leaves, and ‘Travelers Weeping,’ a selected clone with glossy leaves and pendulous trailing branches. It may only grow five feet high but can spread 12 feet wide. Talk about impacting a landscape view! Then there are the Chinese redbuds, with more rounded than heart-shaped leaves. They also tend to be multi-stem shrubs at about 10 feet instead of 25-foot-tall trees. Special cultivars in this species include ‘Avondale,’ a New Zealand cultivar known for its abundant flowers; ‘Bubblegum,’ with pink flowers; and ‘Don Egolf,’ with glossy leaves and an excellent flowering habit. Another wonderful selection out of the North Carolina breeding program is ‘Kay’s Early Hope’ that blooms early and lasts nearly twice as long as the species.

aring for sensitive skin often means giving up fragrance and prioritizing formulas that prevent irritation – at least that’s how it was for Ashley Morgan’s daughter, who has struggled with eczema since birth. The determined mother researched ingredients and products on the market before eventually creating her own skin care blends. After years of garnering product feedback from family and friends and selling to a small but loyal customer base at craft fairs, Morgan quit her job as a tech executive to fully invest in Whip It Goods Skincare, her very own sweet-smelling, plant-based product line. What started as a fragrance-free skin care solution for Morgan’s daughter has expanded to include luxurious options with safe scents and intentional ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and aloe extract. “I was making things with scent for myself and my husband, so when [my daughter] got older, she was smelling [what] I was using and saying, ‘Mommy, I want to smell pretty too,’” Morgan says. “I spent a lot of time researching

suppliers and where to get fragrances that don’t have phthalates, parabens, [or] formaldehyde in them.” She found a supplier for fragrance and essential oils that were suitable for her daughter and has since stuck with those trusted ingredients for Whip It Goods. Today, bestsellers include the Whipped Body Butter
with bergamot and pear or sweet teakwood, and the Jojoba + Aloe Whipped Facial Moisturizer. The shop also sells soap bars, sugar scrubs, facial toner, and body oil. Morgan has received online orders from all over the world, but she’s especially proud of how her business has grown in the St. Louis area; it now occupies a larger space on Olive Boulevard. One unique service Whip It Goods offers is the opportunity for customers to create their own products at the shop’s body oil bar or at scheduled workshops, soon featuring fall and winter fragrances. Returning customers who log their custom blend may also reorder it online. “They use the same oils that I get from my suppliers, and they can blend their own custom fragrance for particular products,” Morgan says. “It’s led by a workshop hostess or myself, and we’re instructing, answering questions, and giving knowledge on skin care. hen stay-at-home mom Laurie Berlener saw her kids growing older, she decided to build something of her own: a business geared toward making women feel seen and confident. Since the 2019 inception of U defined boutique – Berlener’s women’s clothing and accessories store – the Florissant native has grown her business to two locations along historic Main Street in St. Charles. “Our boutiques are places where [women can] feel beautiful, confident, and reminded that they matter, too,” Berlener says. With school drop-offs, busy schedules, dinners, laundry, and ensuring everyone else’s needs are met, Berlener says caring for oneself isn’t always top of mind. She designed U defined as a place where shoppers can reconnect with themselves – even if just for an hour. After debuting on social media, U defined’s first shop, known as the “Little Blue House,” opened on South Main Street in April 2019. The need for more space prompted a second location just a half-mile away, which opened in December 2024.

S
t. Louis artist Allie Reece’s journey with ceramics began at an early age when she worked with kids’ modeling clay, and she’s been fired up about it since then. (No pun intended.) Throughout high school and college, Reece explored her love for clay and found her calling to pursue ceramics full-time. “Ceramics was the one thing in school I really felt confident about,” she says. “I was drawn to it because of the encouragement I felt from teachers, but I stuck with it because I felt a lot of fulfillment from it. Even as an adult, I’m finding new ways to curb feeling burnt out and remain fulfilled by its practice. Sharing what I love to do with others is the best way for me to [find contentment].” That self-realization continues to shape the way Reece approaches her work, especially when it comes to experimenting within her craft. “As a ceramicist, there are many avenues I can take to get to the finishing point of a piece [and] different ways to accomplish what I set out to do,” she says. “After primarily hand-building for years, and now just within the last year, getting more into throwing, I’ve been

experimenting with all sorts of [methods]. When you walk into my studio, I could be working on 10 of the same project but attacking the process in 10 different ways.” One part Reece finds challenging is making the same piece repeatedly, since
trying to “make new things to resonate with new people” is a priority. “At the last show I was a part of, I had over 100 mugs – and not a single one was the same,” she adds. “I want people to … see the time and effort I put into creating my work, and [I hope they] connect with their individual piece [like no one else can].” Reece is also the art curator for Gallery Pub, a restaurant in St. Louis’ Shaw neighborhood that displays local art with rotating shows every two to three months. Through her time in this role, she’s managed to stay inspired. “Working with artists is a delight to me, and it’s especially fun learning each artist’s process of creating,” she says. “I’ve made some incredible friends through [curation] who have propelled me to spend more time investing in my own art. t Thai Kitchen’s new Overland carryout location, three generations of Thai women are dedicated to cooking classic Thai dishes fresh to order for their patrons every day – the same way their family has crafted specialties by hand in the area for the past 27 years. The storefront debuted in August and is owned by Nickie Woodruff and her mother, Sasi Ongart. Woodruff’s grandmother also lends a hand in day-to-day operations at the family’s restaurants. The close-knit team of passionate cooks currently operates three fullservice locations of Thai Kitchen in St. Charles, O’Fallon, and Wentzville as well as Thai Mama in Maryland Heights. Ongart, who hails from Bangkok, opened the original location of Thai Kitchen in 1999. With the new carryout version of the concept, Woodruff says they hope to offer “a night market feel,” complete with packable fare that’s available to order in-person, online, or via third-party delivery. “We’re excited to be in this area and to offer late-evening hours,” Woodruff says. From 11 a.m. until 11 p.m., guests can choose from Southeast Asian staples daily such as pad Thai, drunken noodles, and six kinds of curry: red, panang, yellow, green, massaman, and duck pineapple curry. In addition to long-established signature dishes, the menu

features street food to accompany the primarily takeout model. Traditional Thai street food options exclusive to this location include moo ping (marinated pork skewers served with sticky rice), spicy chicken and pork dumplings, duck fried rice, and pad kra pow – a spicy, garlicky stir fry common at street markets made with minced chicken. A Home Tour for the

odernSTL – a local group that aims to identify, preserve, celebrate, and educate people about modernist architecture in St. Louis – invites you to explore local homes with a defining architectural style on Saturday, Oct. 10, at its Mid-County Modern Home Tour. Architecture and design enthusiasts can explore eight midcentury modern houses across Olivette, Ladue, and Creve Coeur – offering a rare chance to catch a glimpse inside. Proceeds benefit the ModernSTL Preservation Fund, which supports the conservation of midcentury architecture in St. Louis. Here at Ladue News, we’ve examined a variety of buildings and design styles found in St. Louis – an area flush with intriguing historic gems. Although tourgoers won’t know which ones they’ll see until the event starts, several homes were designed by St. Louisborn architects William Bernoudy and Isadore Shank. Shank is also responsible for the geometric, two-toned DeBaliviere Building at the intersection of Delmar Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue. ince 1870, the Humane Society of Missouri has been Giving Animals in Need the Second Chance They Deserve. In the more than 150 years since its founding, the nonprofit has remained true to its mission to end the cycle of abuse and pet overpopulation through rescue and investigation efforts, adoption programs, affordable veterinary care and education. “People often know us best for our shelters and adoption programs, but our work extends far beyond those services,” says President Kathy Warnick. “We also provide humane education, foster programs and other services designed to help keep pets healthy, safe and with the families who love them.” Warnick is passionate about all aspects of animal welfare, from rescuing animals who are victims of abuse and neglect and providing the highest-quality veterinary care possible, to advocating for laws that protect animals and supporting the bond between people and their pets. At the heart of HSMO’s work is their mission that every animal who has been abused, neglected or abandoned deserves a second chance. Key to HSMO’s operations is its Animal Cruelty Task Force, which works with law enforcement agencies throughout the state to investigate animal abuse and neglect and to rescue animals from life-threatening situations. In a case that took place in 2025 in Christian County, Mo., the task force rescued 217 dogs living in extremely difficult conditions.

Every one of those dogs, including one named Cinderella, has found new forever homes. Warnick adds that happily-ever-after stories like hers are why everyone at HSMO is so passionate about their work. This is the theme behind HSMO’s upcoming Happy Tails Gala, celebrating the animals whose lives have been transformed by the nonprofit and those who support it. “The Happy Tails Gala is one of the Humane Society of Missouri’s most special celebrations, and it only happens once every five years,” Warnick says. “The last time we held the gala, in 2021, we celebrated HSMO’s 150th birthday, so we’re very excited to bring our friends and supporters together again this year. Guests can expect an elegant and fun evening, but the heart of the event is our mission. We’ll share some remarkable stories of animals who have been rescued, healed and given the second chances they deserve.” In addition to sponsoring or attending the event, there are countless ways to support HSMO. Adopting, fostering, volunteering, donating money or needed supplies, or simply sharing stories and encouraging others to get involved all help the nonprofit continue its work throughout the community. “We couldn’t provide this level of care without the generosity of people who believe animals deserve compassion and protection,” Warnick concludes. “An animal can come through our doors frightened, injured or neglected, and months later you see them healthy,

or almost three decades, FOCUS St. Louis has illuminated regional leadership and community goals with their annual “What’s Right with the Region” Awards, held this year at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus. Attendees joined for an afternoon of connecting, socializing and networking over hors d’veoures ahead of the evening awards ceremony. t was a beautiful day for a race as supporters of St. Louis Children’s Hospital gathered at Old Warson Country Club for the first Field Day: At the Race event benefiting the St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation. ive world premieres will highlight Saint Louis Dance Theatre’s innovative new season. Under artistic director Kirven Douthit-Boyd, the Gateway City’s contemporary dance company will present a premiere-packed mainstage season entitled “Elements of Harmony.” The harmonious theme “was inspired by the art that it takes to produce our work… [as] vastly different talents join forces every season to make something beautiful for our audiences,” Douthit-Boyd says. “The choreographers, lighting designers, musicians, costume designers, production crew, our community collaborators, and of course, my brilliant dancers, all lend their expertise and their collaborative spirits to make magical moments.” Kicking off with the “Fall Series,” running Oct. 23 to 25 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center, the season offers audiences new works by Douthit-Boyd, a former principal dancer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and acclaimed guest choreographers Rena Butler and Keerati Jinakunwiphat, both winners of the Princess Grace Award –

Butler, known for work at San Francisco Opera, Dutch National Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet, brings her “percussive, emotionally direct choreography,” while the style of Jinakunwiphat, the first Asian woman commissioned by New York City Ballet, “emphasizes connectivity – work built on relationships between dancers,” a press release states. “I’m excited to share ‘Walking Mad’ by Johan Inger and ‘kiss.’ by Stephanie Martinez, alongside the return of ‘Cloud 9’ by Norbert de la Cruz, and new works by [guest choreographers] Butler, Jinakunwiphat, Houston Thomas, and Dexandro Montalvo,” Douthit-Boyd says. The season also features “Gaslight Dreams” on Dec. 18 and 19 at Skip Viragh Center for the Arts. Presented by the Whitaker Foundation, the beloved holiday production returns in collaboration with Jazz St. Louis.

And this spring, experience the heart of Saint Louis Dance Theatre’s innovation with “Our Voices,” on April 2 and 3 at Touhill Performing Arts Center, showcasing original new works by the company’s own dancers. “Elements of Harmony” crescendoes with four days of premiere performances during the “Spring Series” from May 20 to 23 at COCA, with world premieres by Thomas and Montalvo. A Princess Grace Award winner whose dance career spans Chicago’s South Side and a decade as a soloist with Dresden Semperoper Ballett, Thomas boasts commissions from the Joffrey Ballet, The Washington Ballet, and Opéra National de Bordeaux. Montalvo, the former artistic director for Dance Theatre of San Francisco, will bring his blend of ballet, modern dance, and hiphop, pushing the boundaries of musicality and physicality, as he returns for a second commission following “Such Sweet Thunder,” which he set on the group – then known as Big Muddy Dance Company – in 2019. The landmark lineup of five world premiere commissions by some of
contemporary dance’s most compelling voices was selected for their varied approaches to dance-making, Douthit-Boyd says. “Their respective backgrounds and experiences in the field help them shape different movement vocabularies that I am really excited to see my dancers embody,” he adds. “Their narratives, musical selections, and overall care for their craft merge into incredible artistic experiences.” Douthit-Boyd continues: “Every one of these choreographers brings a distinct voice, a different way of moving through the world. What they share is rigor, imagination, and a deep respect for the dancers in the room. That’s how we build a repertoire with diversity of tones, textures, and viewpoints.” Saint Louis Dance Theatre executive director Erin Prange says the “‘Elements of Harmony’ season reflects who we are becoming as a company – an organization that commissions boldly, invests in artists, and trusts that St. Louis audiences are ready for work that challenges and moves them.” In an effort to reach everyone through the art of dance, Saint Louis Dance Theatre extends offers including “pay what
you wish” ticketing at select performances. “World-class dance should be accessible to everyone in our community, and every program we offer – from Community Night to our Youth Access Program – is designed to make that real, not aspirational,” Prange says. By the final curtain call, Douthit-Boyd hopes longstanding patrons feel proud of the company’s evolution and attendees continue to follow its trajectory. “I hope that our audiences leave feeling uplifted," he says. t GENT Fashion Week, it’s no longer all about the men. Yes, the annual happening draws many men to the runway, but the styles and festivities have become more inclusive since this local industry event first launched in 2015. More women and creatives of all gender identities are working behind the scenes to orchestrate a lineup of menswear-inspired fashion presentations, shopping experiences, and a competition for up-and-coming designers. “Fashion is always evolving, and I think it’s genderless,” says Dwight Carter, founder and executive director of GENT. Carter’s team at his event planning and consulting company Brainchild Next have created an experience for anyone with an interest in fashion or music. This year’s theme, “100 Years of Style + Sound,” challenges those involved to look back at how different eras of music have influenced fashion and how means of expression have evolved over time. Carter has hosted the Fashion Anarchy competition for designers in years past, but this year’s relaunch marks the first in which finalists will compete live during GENT Fashion Week and the first to honor Tyler “Tai” Davis, a St. Louis artist and chef who passed away in January. “Tai modeled in every show I’ve ever had, especially GENT. He was there from day one,” Carter says. “He would have been a part of this whole thing. So, just to keep him in it, this [inaugural award to honor him] is going to continue. This is not a one-time thing.” Among the designers, students hailing from Chuck Berry’s alma mater, Sumner High, will showcase creations inspired by the musical legend and Tina Turner, another superstar with local roots. designers send their creations down the runway to a high-energy, rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack by St. Louis’ Jason Nelson Band. Some designers are mainstays at GENT, like Paulie Gibson, whose namesake brand inspired the first GENT Fashion Week 11 years ago. Gibson describes GENT as a unique platform for showcasing menswear and celebrating “those who contribute to it,” he says, especially as the industry caters heavily to women’s apparel, its highest revenue-producing sector. “[Men’s fashion] is a very, very hard industry to be in, and it’s very, very expensive,” Gibson says. “I am self-funded, so typically most people in my situation will make a sample and ... show it, and then they will try to take orders for it.” Support from sponsors like Baby Lock and Stars Design Group have helped cover costs, enabling designers to show and sell their work at GENT without a buy-in fee, which for other shows often ranges from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. “You get a pretty good opportunity to get press and content for your brand [at GENT],” Gibson says. “It’s fun and low pressure.” The visibility, networking opportunities, media exposure, and social media content are invaluable to young designers like Madeline Mehler, who spends personal time and money on her fashion side hustle. This year will be her first to show at GENT under her Umi Dreami label, which has repurposed men’s garments to serve more feminine silhouettes. “At first, I was not sure how I kind of fit into the formula. I primarily design womenswear,” Mehler says. “But a lot of my work is inspired by menswear or utilizes components of menswear in sort of an upcycled or deconstructed way.” She describes a dress made from men’s formal button-down shirts and how she fashioned them into a corset top with a layered skirt. “They’re normally wearing [those shirts] in some sort of corporate or formal environment, and it’s meant to … command respect – maybe to insinuate some type of leadership,” Mehler says. “So, I was like, ‘How can I … inspire that feeling of strength, that feeling of leadership and knowledge, but also … distort it into a womenswear garment?’” GENT celebrates concepts like these and invites St. Louisans to do the same.
