Finding the purr-fect care plan for pets before a trip can be mind-boggling. Luckily, we’ve gathered information from local businesses to help you decide how best to keep your four-legged friends safe.
Before figuring out who will look after them while you’re away, it’s important to make sure your pets are up to date on all their immunizations. Several local boarding facilities – including Dogtopia, The Watering Bowl, and Williamsburg Pet Hotel & Suites (which also boards cats) – require pets to be up to date on rabies (all animals), bordetella (dogs), DHLPP (dogs), and feline distemper vaccinations. The canine influenza shot is not required but highly recommended.
The Watering Bowl and Dogtopia offer complimentary meet-and-greets to ensure dogs are comfortable in a group setting, and Williamsburg Pet Hotel & Suites groups pups by temperament and size depending on what services their parents decide to book.
Dogtopia has locations in Rock Hill, Town and Country, Ellisville, St. Peters, and Lake St. Louis. It offers daycare, boarding, and spa services. Overnight boarding is priced at $58 per night for enrolled pets and $68 for non-enrolled pets.

The Watering Bowl offers daycare, boarding, training, and grooming at locations in Brentwood, St. Louis City (Dog Grove), and St. Peters. Standard boarding begins at $53 per night. Suites are priced at $59.50 per night, with five- and 10-night packages ranging from $239 to $520.
For new pet owners, there also may be age and spay or neuter requirements. The Watering Bowl requires dogs to be at least 12 weeks old, and any dog older than 7 months must be spayed or neutered. Dogtopia accepts dogs at least 16 weeks old and requires them to be spayed or neutered by 7 months. Williamsburg Pet Hotel & Suites requires pets to be at least 4 months old and spayed or neutered by 6 months.

BEAU & CLAIRE Making a Splash:

The St. Louis Aquarium has welcomed two special new residents. In March 2026, the landmark introduced North American river otters Beau and Claire as part of a unique conservation partnership dedicated to helping protect the species.
Both Beau and Claire quickly took to their new environments, showing off the species’ trademark inquisitiveness. “They’re doing really well,” says Erin Clark, St. Louis Aquarium director of animal projects. “They’re taking full advantage of the space, scrambling up the waterfall – it’s great fun when they do that – and engaging with our guests.”
Both otters were born at sanctuaries to rescued Louisiana-native parents who were deemed “nuisance animals” by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In Louisiana, river otters often come into conflict with crawfish farmers, as they are natural predators of the harvest.
To manage this balance, a specialized sanctuary in the state rescues these otters and places them in permanent homes. The
anonymous rescue organization soon discovered that both rescued otters were pregnant. “Generally, if an animal is born under human care, it’s uncommon for them to be released unless it’s a very intentional reintroduction,” Clark says.
The pair were introduced on March 10 during the “discovery phase.” The aquarium spent the first few months giving the otters time to get comfortable with their new environment. They knew how to swim, but neither had been in water where they couldn’t touch the bottom, so the facility’s 18-foot pool was an adjustment.
“Beau is … confident in his space, while Claire takes a bit more to assess a situation,” Clark says. “Claire picked up [behavioral training] quickly, but Beau wasn’t far behind.”
The aquarium was previously home to three North American river otters: siblings Thatcher, Sawyer, and Finn. Because the species doesn’t remain in sibling groups as they mature, the aquarium worked with facilities across the country to place them in environments better suited to their ages.
For Clark and the rest of the team, a new set of otters marks a fresh opportunity to see these marvelous creatures in action. Long inhabited by Indigenous peoples, St. Louis developed as a fur-trading settlement in the 18th century. The otter population declined as trade activity increased and the Industrial Revolution polluted the region. With tighter regulations over the past few decades, otters have returned to their natural habitats.
Clark adds: “An opportunity to get up close and observe them is a really amazing thing.”

Don’t Ignore the Pelvic Floor

Women have dismissed it for years. As we age or after giving birth, we might urinate when we sneeze or laugh. While it’s common, it’s not normal, and it can be treated. It’s known as pelvic floor dysfunction.
We all have a group of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue that are often unnoticed and underappreciated – until they weaken and things literally start to go south. The pelvic floor creates a supportive hammock at the base of the pelvis where the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs rest, and we need a strong, stable one to support bladder and bowel function, our core during movement, and sexual function.
Pelvic floor dysfunction occurs when these support structures begin to fail. Signs include
urinary leakage, difficulty with bowel control, a feeling of bulging or pressure, or pelvic pain. “Sometimes women start withdrawing from regular physical activities to avoid worsening their symptoms,” says Dr. Sara Wood, chief of urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery at WashU Medicine. “Movement is medicine, and limiting activity would be another sign of interference in your daily life.” Wood adds that a good first step is talking with a primary care physician or obstetrician-gynecologist. A urogynecologist, or subspecialist with additional training in pelvic floor conditions, can offer both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options tailored to specific needs.
“Like other muscles in the body, the pelvic floor can often be rehabilitated,” she
says. “Establishing healthy habits [such as] avoiding constipation, not straining with bowel movements, and maintaining regular bladder habits can help protect pelvic floor function.” Pelvic floor physical therapy is another option. Specially-trained therapists can evaluate muscle function and guide patients through exercises to improve strength, coordination, or relaxation.
Treatment extends beyond physical therapy and Kegel exercises. “Many newer treatments for urinary incontinence are designed with convenience and recovery in mind,” Wood says. “Urethral bulking for stress urinary incontinence is a minimally invasive procedure performed under sedation that can be completed in 15 minutes with little to no downtime. For urgency-related leakage, bladder Botox injections can be performed in the office to help relax the bladder muscle and improve symptoms. These therapies are widely used, evidence-based, and often covered by insurance, making effective treatment more accessible than patients realize.”
Wood wants women to know that they don’t have to suffer in silence. “Starting the conversation with your doctor is a huge first step,” she says. “Open conversations and early evaluation can lead to meaningful improvement. Patients should feel empowered to seek care, ask questions, and explore the range of options available to them.”

RAVEN A Plant Called

As some readers may know, my dear husband, Peter H. Raven, recently passed away. An extraordinary botanist and highly respected by his peers, he collected more than 50 plants named in his honor.
After his colleagues started running out of places to use ravenii, they began to employ more creative equivalents such as corax (Latin for “raven”) and megacorax (Latin for “big raven”). Ceroxylon ravenii is a rare wild Peruvian stemless palm tree. Anthurium ravenii is a peace lily with a large white flower found only in Costa Rica. Almost all the plants named for my Peter Raven are found only in the wild.
The naming of cultivated plants is different. To use their full name, the genus and species are in italicized Latin, but the variety names may be either Latin or English. The dawn redwood (its common name), or Metasequoia glyptostroboides (its Latin name), has ‘Raven,’ always in single quotes, as the cultivar name and SHAW’S LEGACY as its trade name. You may visit the original of this tree in the colonnade in front of the Lehmann Building at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

For the home gardener, most of the plants named Raven are given that designation in honor
of the bird. They have either flowers or foliage that is dark purple to black. The house plant Raven ZZ (Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Raven’) is an elegant foliage plant with compound leaves that emerge lime green and age into a glossy purple black. Put a little drama in your own garden by bringing one of these ravens home. The hardy geranium ‘Raven’ is perfect for the woodland garden. It is beautiful
with lacy cut leaves and amethyst-hued one-inch flowers on wiry stems. Used as a ground cover and filler, its delicate texture contrasts nicely with the broad leaves of hosta. For the sunny border, try ‘Raven Girl’ bearded Iris. It captures the iridescence of a raven’s wing in deep purple to black. And the tall spikes of black, currant purple and red flowers on the penstemon ‘Raven’ are popular with pollinators.
Probably the most dramatic plant in this darkly hued group is the ornamental sweet potato of the series Sweet Caroline called ‘Raven.’ With long trailing vines of black olive-maroon, it can be a theatrical spiller in a container. Just don’t try to eat this one. No one will ask for seconds.

Wearing all there is to love about St. Louis on your sleeve is a cinch with Series Six.

Creative Carving Out a
PATH

Merging functional and fine art, Mindy Cooke creates one-of-akind wooden wall hangings and bespoke furniture. She owns Art by Design Furnishings and has made a living as a professional made-to-order cabinet maker for more than 27 years.
While apprenticing with her father in his shop, Cooke learned the building blocks of woodworking. “We built custom cabinets and furniture for high-end clientele. Everything had to be perfect,” Cooke remembers. “That level of quality has only grown in my artistic practice. I use all traditional glue wood-joining techniques and no nails or screws in my artwork. [My dad] also taught me the value of constant innovation – finding new ways to do the same thing … to create new things.”
Cooke constructs all her original pieces in her shop, a converted barn, handling every step from designing and drawing to sanding and finishing. “I have to be cognizant of the tools I have and how I use the space,” she says. “I don’t have room for bells and whistles and the latest gadgets, so my shop is fairly minimal: I have the basics and do the rest with hand tools.”
Cooke began building furniture for herself after she was unable to find pieces in the right sizes, colors, and designs. She developed a desire to create furniture that was unlike something you could find in a box store. “That perspective has [made me] curious [about] what my work could look like if I combined woodworking with art. That combination is
reflected in the work you see today.”
For her art, Cooke is drawn to feminine energy and the beauty of ocean life. “Inspiration for new pieces comes from several sources. Women are extraordinary in our strength and compassion, ability to bring new life into the world, caregiving, and so much more,” she says. “My sea creatures are created to show how delicate and beautiful the life in our oceans is – that these creatures need protection. The woods I choose for each piece help me tell that story either by color, grain pattern, knots or flaws, or where the wood comes from.”
Cooke takes art commissions through her furniture design business. She especially enjoys projects that bring antiques back to life. “The best feeling is when I’m delivering a family heirloom that came to me beat up … [that I’ve] refinished and returned to looking brand new,” she says. “I love getting a teary hug or [the owners] saying it looks even better than they imagined it would.”

On the Road to London & Broadway
The beloved STAGES St. Louis was founded in 1987 by Kirkwood native Michael Hamilton, former artistic director, and his partner, Jack Lane, former executive producer. They retired after the 2022 season. Hamilton passed away in early 2025, leaving a void in his husband’s life. Although Lane left a lasting imprint on the community – directing 100 musicals at STAGES, he branched out to produce musicals and other shows that have found success on Broadway and in London’s West End.
Among Lane’s current ventures is the touring production of “The Karate Kid: The Musical,” which opened on April 28 at the New Wimbledon Theatre and tours the U.K. prior to a three-month engagement in Toronto. Hamilton and Lane presented the world premiere of “The Karate Kid” at STAGES in 2022. After years of smoothing out its edges, the show has made its way overseas. “It’s been strategically thought out,” Lane said earlier this month. “It’s being rehearsed in London right now; it’s a great production. And it started here in St. Louis.”
The stage adaptation features a book by Robert Mark Kamen, screenwriter for the hit 1984 film, with music and lyrics by Drew Gasparini. It focuses on a shy teen named Daniel, who learns how to stand up to adversity through the guidance of Mr. Miyagi, a karate instructor who teaches Daniel about selfrespect and decency as well as martial arts. The show features a Tony Award-winning design team, with direction by Amon Miyamoto, the first Japanese director to helm a musical on Broadway (a revival of “Pacific Overtures”).
Canada gives Lane and the show’s other producers time to ascertain next steps for the 2027 production.
Lane also is a producer of the current revival of “Evita” in the West End, which picked up two Olivier Awards in early April. Another show coproduced by Lane, the revival of “The Producers,” garnered several Olivier Award nominations as well. “Evita” marked Lane’s first Olivier Award nomination as a producer. He says it may be heading to Broadway in 2027.
“While we didn’t win the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival of ‘Evita,’ … my absolute two favorite creatives of Jamie Lloyd’s production did both win Olivier Awards: Rachel Zegler, who gave an absolutely galvanizing performance as Eva Peron, won Best Actress in a Musical. And Fabian Aloise, whose [work showed a] mind-blowing choreographic vision of the world of ‘Evita’ and Argentina, won Best Choreography.”

The STL Key
In the Grand Center Arts District, The Key STL has it all: smashburgers, a full bar, sports, live music, and dancing. The latest spot from the Kranzberg Arts Foundation debuted last fall and offers American comfort fare and entertainment in a space filled with vibrant local art.
“St. Louis is a melting pot of cultures and diverse personalities, and The Key plays into all of that,” general manager Honora Kinsella says. “We wanted to give people the opportunity to explore a little bit of this and that in an exciting new setting.”
The 9,000-square-foot complex is made up of two adjacent historic buildings built in 1887. Art by Cuban designers and illustrators Raul Valdés, Juan Carlos Polo, and Carlos Zamora embellishes the bar and restaurant, wrapping cheerful St. Louis-inspired imagery across the walls. TV screens hang around the dining area where guests can catch live sports feeds under a beautifully restored original tin ceiling.
On the 100-seat restaurant side, guests will find a fast-casual menu designed by Michele Coen of Michele C. Catering & Events. The seasoned chef previously owned The Dam in South City. Pasture-raised local beef from Price Family Farms stars in a series of smashburgers on Fazio bread – including The Hat Trick, with three patties, American cheese, grilled onions, jalapeños, bacon, and spicy barbecue sauce.

The Magic Mushroom is another highlight, with two patties, Swiss, gouda, an Ozark Forest Mushroom mix, and garlic mayo on sourdough. Build-yourown burgers including a vegan option are available. Additional savory offerings range from jerk chicken wings and hand-cut fries to cheesesteaks and gulf shrimp tacos, all available with housemade sauces.
Dessert options include gooey butter cake from Ann & Allen Bakery and key lime toasted ravioli from STL Toasted. From the bar, consider local beers or a selection of craft cocktails named after St. Louis City SC players.
In the restored adjoining dance hall dubbed The Boogie, visitors will find a robust programming schedule slated with live party bands, DJs, and dance nights. “It’s wonderful to have a place for the dance community again for people to come and bring different events to life,” Kinsella says. “It’s so cool to be in the restored space. You can really feel the history here.”

Minds in Bloom Annual Auction and Dinner
Teachers, students, and supporters of Miriam School and Learning Center gathered at the Clayton Plaza Hotel for the third annual Minds in Bloom auction and dinner. This year, the event raised more than $300,000 to support Miriam, the premier educational hub for children with learning differences in the St. Louis area. Guests came dressed in their country and western best for the themed event which featured cocktails and appetizers, photos, raffles and a live auction. With a record of more than 300 in attendance this year, this annual event was a rousing success!

HelenWallmovedtonorthernEthiopiawithherhusband in2014foreightmonths.There,sheobservedasurprising obstacletogirls’education:lackofaccesstoadequate menstrualsupplies.ThisledtothefoundingofDignityPeriod, anorganizationthatpromotesmenstrualawarenessand provideswashable,reusablemenstrualpads.
UponreturningtoSt.Louis,Wallwasstartledbyresearch thatshowedthesameproblemexistsinlocallow-income communities.DignityPeriodhaslaunchedasimilarprogram fortheSt.Louisarea,partneringwithschools,community foodbanks,andpubliclibraries.
