Urban League of Metropolitan th Saint Louis’ 107 Annual Dinner

ext month, join the Urban League of Metropolitan Saint Louis for its annual dinner, celebrating 107 years of empowering African Americans and others in the St. Louis region to be valued members of a thriving community.

“We are very blessed to have a 107-year history,” says president and CEO Michael P. McMillan. “We are the largest and most successful Urban League in the United States, and that is because of the overwhelming support that we get from all sectors of society in St. Louis.”

The Urban League offers 65 different programs and services in the strategic areas of Economic Opportunity, Educational Excellence, Community Empowerment, Public Safety and Community Response, and Civil Rights and Advocacy.

These programs and services provide a social safety net through healthcare and access to basic resources as well as giving people a ladder to success through quality education, scholarships, internships as well as entrepreneurship and job opportunities.

“That is something we have a long history with and are very proud of - getting good jobs for people to take care of themselves and their families,” McMillan explains. Additionally, the Urban League is still growing, with plans to create shopping districts in Ferguson and downtown St. Louis, as well as new housing developments and more.

The Urban League’s annual dinner will be on Tuesday, April 22 at the Marriott downtown and will celebrate all the ways that Urban League helps uplift and champion St. Louisans.

“We are asking anyone that shares in our mission to join us and celebrate with us,” McMillan says. “2024 was our most successful year in history and we have great things planned for the future.”

Alongside the event, McMillans adds that volunteers are always welcome in assisting the Urban League with its mission year ‘round. “We are blessed to have thousands of volunteers every year, and donors that support us and what we’re trying to do for the community,” he says.

A Proactive Approach

N

o one loves getting a colonoscopy – or rather, no one loves preparing for a colonoscopy. But with colon cancer affecting younger people at a higher rate in recent years, this is one of the few procedures that can both detect and potentially prevent cancer, making it worth the while.

The increase in colorectal cancer diagnoses in people younger than 50 “must be diet-related,” says Dr. Sekhar Dharmarajan, a Mercy colorectal surgeon. “It’s got be the processed foods and the diets we eat – we don’t even really know what’s in a lot of foods. I think that’s what’s leading to this.” Dharmarajan adds that obesity is known to increase colorectal cancer risk, and lack of exercise is another possible contributor.

“Obesity is pro-inflammatory, especially in the colon and intestines,” he says. “Over time, being exposed to prolonged inflammation causes cancers or neoplastic changes in the cells because it drives mutations that can lead to cancer.” Although he notes that it can be tough in households where all adults are working full time, cooking at home with fresh, whole ingredients is a much healthier strategy than picking up prepared foods.

However, Dharmarajan says that specific colorectal cancer triggers are still unclear. “Cancer is developing in younger and younger patients because we’re ingesting all these chemicals, and that’s not even getting into things like microplastics and other environmental triggers.” Sugar and red meat,

especially grilled red meat, are known inflammatory foods, Dharmarajan says.

Scientists are exploring genetic mutations that contribute to colorectal cancer. Part of the “precision medicine” movement, the goal is to be able to identify genetic markers that predispose people to colorectal and other cancers. But until those diagnostic techniques are refined, screening and prevention are necessary via colonoscopy, which is still considered the gold standard in preventing colorectal cancers by detecting and removing pre-cancerous polyps. Current guidelines call for everyone 45 and older to have a colonoscopy, but some people should have one earlier based on family history. No other test for colorectal cancer can completely visualize the colon and remove lesions or polyps, preventing cancer from forming in the first place.

Newer tests, such as stool- or blood-based testing, are available and can be used once every one to three years for those who cannot or will not undergo colonoscopy, Dharmarajan says. “If a stool-sample test is negative, you can be pretty sure you do not have colorectal cancer. But you don’t know if there are pre-cancerous changes that should be addressed.”

Dharmarajan’s advice is simple and mirrors most medical advice for good overall health: Eat a healthy diet, limit processed foods and red meats, exercise regularly, don’t smoke, and follow your doctor’s recommendations regarding screenings. One day of discomfort is worth saving your life.

Moii Coffee Meet

F

iraol Ahmed and Andy Irakoze met as undergraduates at Saint Louis University. Now, they’re taking the coffee world by storm.

Since 2023, Ahmed has been working on Moii Coffee, a startup that connects coffee roasters with coffee producers and farmers.

“There are a lot of intermediaries between those two,” Ahmed says. “So we’re kind of [bridging] that gap.”

Ahmed originally started sharing his love for coffee as a passion project. “In 2022, I started working out of my dorm room as a roasting company,” Ahmed says. “I was roasting coffee beans from Ethiopia and selling them online.”

After speaking with roasters and seeing the challenges they faced in sourcing their beans, Ahmed decided to change and expand the business. Moii Coffee is now strictly a software connecting producers to independent roasters. Irakoze, a software engineer, officially joined Ahmed in the pursuit last October. “[Ahmed] was telling me … how difficult it is for roasters to connect to producers directly,” Irakoze says.

“He wanted to build a platform, and I was like, ‘You know what? Let’s do it.’”

“We like to think of it as an Instacart for the coffee industry,” Ahmed says. “There are people selling, there are people buying, but we make the logistics and the delivery happen.”

Roasters from all over the U.S. are currently using the platform: “We have buyers in quite a few different states on the West Coast and East Coast,” Ahmed says. “We have some in Alabama, Arkansas, and then a lot

in the Midwest as well. … We were able to ship coffee to 42 states in the first year.”

Even with Moii’s current momentum, the coffee market itself presents challenges. “The coffee industry is actually super saturated,” Ahmed says.

“So you really have to stand out, right? Because you could get Ethiopian coffee from 20 different roasters in one small city.”

The duo believes that authenticity has been the key to their success.

Ahmed says: “I was pretty open. I was like, ‘Hey, I’m a college student, this what I’m doing, and I’m figuring it out.’ And people like that, because there isn’t a lot of authenticity out there, in entrepreneurship, especially.

Everyone wants to tell you how big they are and how successful they are, but when you’re authentic and you’re just telling people how it is, people relate to that, and people feel inspired.”

When Ahmed traveled to Ethiopia last December, he also had the chance to speak with some of the coffee farmers themselves. One farmer shared with him what he wished more people knew about the coffee industry.

“I wish people knew how hard we work to produce these coffees,” Ahmed shares on behalf of the coffee farmer. “The amount of care that goes into it, the amount of intentionality that goes into producing each bean, is a lot more than people think when they’re just sitting there drinking it.”

A

pril Jensen moved her 30-year-old interior design firm, ADJ Interiors, to a new location last year, inspiring her to open her doors for a new monthly event. “This is such a cute neighborhood,” she says of the firm’s location at 51 N. Gore Ave. in Webster Groves. “There are young families and also established families with amazing homes, and we just really enjoyed participating in neighborhood events related to holidays. It made me realize maybe we could create more personal connections here.”

Jensen’s idea blossomed into the impetus for Design Advice Happy Hours, a free event she plans to host from 5 to 7 p.m. the first Thursday of every month. In addition to answering frequent design questions – such as “Which wallpaper should I choose?” or “What finishes would look best for my kitchen hardware?”– Jensen will offer appetizers and a signature cocktail from local caterers and food purveyors.

“I hope people come in, even if they don’t have a pressing design question, to meet others in the community and try some great food and drinks,” Jensen says. She and her team of three other interior designers will be on hand to offer expert advice on basic design questions while individuals snack and sip. She says people often agonize over choosing the best finishes and paint colors for a space, something she can easily help identify.

“People invest a lot of money in their homes,” Jensen says, “so they don’t want to make costly mistakes. It can be so helpful to get a neutral opinion from someone who has experience and expertise. And this is a way people can do that easily and at no charge.” Jensen hopes some people will consider the benefits of working with her team on a broader scale to envision and enact a complete design plan, but she realizes people might be on a limited budget or have concerns about working with designers.

She notes there are many reasons people avoid hiring interior designers, and some are based on misconceptions. “We aren’t just for people doing entire house remodels or just for people with large, expensive houses,” she notes. “We love doing those extensive projects, but we’re also here for smaller design projects, and the happy hours can give people a taste of that and answer basic questions so they can move forward on things like repainting a room, arranging artwork or changing a faucet.” She also notes that the ADJ team can point people to reputable contractors for services like plumbing, painting and appliance or countertop repair or replacement.

“Working with an interior designer shouldn’t be intimidating,” Jensen says. “We’re here to be partners with homeowners, to listen and to offer advice and experience and expertise. s we shift in seasons (and hope to leave behind a bitterly cold winter), your skin might be in full recovery mode. We spoke with a local dermatologist, Dr. Ashley McGuinness of Schweiger Dermatology Group in Chesterfield, about the best way to combat dry, itchy and sometimes even cracked or painful skin.

“The first steps in combatting dry skin are using lukewarm water while bathing, patting the skin dry after bathing, immediately applying a gentle moisturizer and avoiding abrasive products,” she says. Cream-based over gel-based products will be kinder to your skin, McGuinness adds, advising to also avoid fragrances, preservatives and other additives that can further irritate and inflame your skin.

As you research which moisturizers best meet your skin’s needs, the doctor stresses the importance of using a product with SPF in it as part of your daytime routine “to protect your skin from UV-induced damage.”

amily-owned and operated for more than 35 years, Chesterfield Valley Nursery is the destination in St. Louis for creating the perfect outdoor oasis.

Founded by owner Jim Graeler in his parents basement and the small lot in the farm and that’s how the trees started, the business has grown to more than 60 employees and additional services.

“We started as just a landscaping company and then we added property maintenance and then about 15 years ago we added the garden center,” explains Andria Graeler-Graves. “Being founded as a landscape design firm first and foremost, we have laid out the nursery and garden center so that customers can walk around and see how all of the plants interact with each other. We have various displays on site, including a large outdoor

living space we recently renovated; an outdoor kitchen, dining area, entertainment area and water feature all featured.”

Chesterfield Valley Nursery has continued on with Jim Graeler’s wife, his brother, daughter and son-in-law. Employees stay active on plant knowledge and trends - even traveling to handpick the material featured in the nursery.

“A big part of what we do that helps us standout is we don’t just order from a website or catalog; Jim and I go out to visit our growers across the United States to develop these relationships provide us with the opportunity to find the unique specimen plant material that are hard to get,” Graeler-Graves says. “We are big on building relationships and making everyone feel welcome.

It’s not just about business, it’s about cultivating that extra step.”

Graeler-Graves adds that at Chesterfield Valley Nursery, everyone is welcome, whether they’re looking for a large project or just want to peruse the garden center. The nursery is also coming up on its annual appreciation sale; the last weekend of April, customers are inivted to bring the family for food, drink, raffles and more fun experiences in coordination with other local businesses.

“We are incredibly grateful to be here,” Graeler-Graves concludes. “Our family has always believed that we have been able to grow and come this far because of God’s blessings and because we have been able to share in that blessing with our customers.”

I

n 2020, the stars aligned for Puja Patel to take ownership of Kirkwood’s beloved boho-chic boutique, Blush.

Patel, an Illinois native and Saint Louis University graduate, began fulfilling her passion for fashion as a sales associate and visual merchandiser for Blush’s two previous owners, including its founder who opened the store in 2006. After simultaneously completing a fashion merchandising degree at the former Fontbonne University in Clayton, Patel was offered the opportunity to own the shop during its reopening following the COVID-19 pandemic. She seized the life-changing career move.

“It was the chance to fulfill a dream,” Patel notes. “It was why I started working at Blush in the first place. So, when the stars align, it’s hard to say no.”

Through the years, Blush has retained its boho vibe and coastal offerings while adding a modern touch. “We still have coastal casual [wear], but more classic and refined,” Patel says. “And the shop’s feel is very homey and comfortable, with a lot of wood, warm earth tones and soft rugs.”

The cozy atmosphere reflects the staff’s approach to customer service, Patel says: “We want the shop to be as welcoming as possible. We interact with people like we’re talking to friends.”

The friendly neighborhood store is an extension of its Kirkwood home, mirroring the “warm, welcoming, super-walkable, super-inviting community,” she adds.

Whether you’re looking for everyday, casual looks or more elevated styles, Blush can outfit you with coastal classics as well as today’s trends.

For spring, chic apparel is available in popular patterns such as stripes and leopard print, as well as varsity vibes, including rugby tees and loafers. “We’re still seeing the sports aesthetic coming into everyday wear but dressing it up in a way – such as a rugby tee under a blazer – mixing the two worlds of dressed up [and] sporty,” Patel explains.

Customers come in for everything from resort wear for their next vacation to an outfit for an upcoming wedding, the owner shares.

Blush is especially known for its selection of dresses and denim. “We have day-to-day dresses [as well as] wedding guest dresses,” Patel says.

“And people rave about our AGOLDE denim line – the quality is amazing.”

Among the shop’s top-selling gifts is Maison Louis Marie No. 4 perfume.

“People have gone crazy over it,” Patel notes, adding that its popularity led her to begin carrying the brand’s line of lotions, candles and room diffusers.

t. Louis’ first halal Chinese restaurant recently debuted in Chesterfield. Afandi Kitchen opened in October, featuring the unique flavors of the Xinjiang region of Northwestern China. The menu specializes in Uyghur cuisine, including specialties such as grilled lamb skewers, Xinjiang big plate braised chicken and laghman, or hand-pulled noodles.

“The restaurant is owned by my dad and his friend, who is a Uyghur,” says manager Susie Ma, a native of Xinjiang who moved to St. Louis 12 years ago to study marketing at Saint Louis University. For the past six years, Ma has worked various roles in the food industry, including in food transition services as well as managing a buffet restaurant.

A colorful statue of a beloved figure in Uyghur culture named Afandi welcomes guests in front of its namesake restaurant, and another adorns an area beside the counter. “He’s like a wise man in Uyghur stories. He and his donkeys travel the world sharing wisdom, and kids from Xinjiang grew up watching him in cartoons,” Ma explains.

For the uninitiated, Ma describes Uyghur cuisine as spicy, sour and fragrant. “It’s a combination of Turkish, Arabic, Middle Eastern and Chinese food, featuring unique spices,” she says, noting that cumin, chili and Sichuan peppercorns are common ingredients. “The owner is a Muslim from China. They want the food to be simple and fresh. All of our ingredients, from the tea to seasonings, come all the way from China for the most authentic experience.”

From the menu, choose from signatures such as Big Plate Chicken, made up of spicy stir-fried bone-in chicken with potatoes, bell peppers, leeks and hand-pulled noodles. Additional highlights include fried leek dumplings, stewed mutton soup served with naan, and Uyghur lamb

polo – a traditional braised rice dish made with bone-in lamb, raisins, carrot, onion and cumin.

“Uyghur people are really good at making lamb.

These are some of the best lamb dishes in all of St. Louis,” Ma says.

One of Ma’s personal favorite entrées is the dry stir-fried laghman, featuring traditional thin hand-pulled noodles stir-fried with chili, garlic chives, and beef. “Our noodles are made with very simple ingredients – salt, water, oil and wheat flour,” she says. “My mom can make a really good laghman. I learned to make it in my hometown, and now my kids love it too.”

The kitchen also cooks up a variety of grilled items, including lamb kebabs and grilled chicken. To drink, Afandi Kitchen offers tea imported from China as well as housemade yogurt drinks. The yogurt is also available as a dessert topped with honey, crushed walnuts and raisins.

“We’ve had so many people come here to try our fresh, handcrafted food,” Ma says. “We even go to mosques to bring our food samples to everybody. Muslims, Chinese and American people really like our food and I hope more will come give it a try.”

he beloved PBS series “Antiques Roadshow” is making its way to St. Louis’ Grant’s Farm on May 13 as part of its 2025 tour.

Reaching more than 5 million weekly viewers on TV and online, “Antiques Roadshow” is the most-watched ongoing primetime PBS series.

Now celebrating its landmark 30th season, the series last visited St. Louis in 2017.

“I look forward to every new season of ‘Roadshow,’ but there is something extra special about visiting St. Louis as part of our Season 30 tour,” executive producer Marsha Bemko says, sharing her excitement about the milestone visit.

“Celebrating three decades of making television with people across the country and their treasures as stars of the show is magical – the items might be old, but the stories never are!”

The show will stop in five locations for this upcoming season: Georgia, Missouri, Utah, Maine and Michigan. Each ticketed guest is welcome to bring two items for appraisal by leading auction house experts and independent dealers.

In 2012, she was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman but miraculously survived. “Her bravery and heroism in the face of obvious assassination attempts as a young girl is one of the most inspiring true stories that illustrates the importance of education,” Votaw Krugh says. Her story continues with her recovery, her international advocacy and her work with the Malala Fund to support global education. The book is a powerful testament to courage, resilience and the belief that one voice can change the world.

“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”

This biography by Rebecca Skloot tells the true story of Henrietta Lacks, a Black woman whose cancer cells were taken without her knowledge in 1951 and who became the first immortal human cell line, known as HeLa. The book weaves together Lacks' life, the scientific breakthroughs her cells enabled, and the ethical questions surrounding medical consent and exploitation. Skloot also explores the impact on Lacks' family, who remained in poverty while HeLa cells revolutionized medicine. “This touches on not only racism within medicine but also the proposed ‘gray’ ethics of a patient not having informed consent through the argument that the cells were used for the proclaimed ‘greater good’ of medicine,” Votaw Krugh says.

OUTDOOR MUSIC FESTIVALS ARE A GREAT CHANCE TO EXPLORE THE OUTER LIMITS OF YOUR STYLE.

estival season is upon us: Stagecoach and Coachella are next month, Lollapalooza and Burning Man will follow later in the summer, and St. Louis hosts Music at the Intersection and Evolution Festival in September – not to mention all the concerts and musical acts playing outdoors locally as the weather warms.

Folks flock to festivals to see their favorites perform live, but fashion is an important element of these events too. “It’s absolutely so fun to be able to style for a music festival because it’s so across the board,” says Megan Keller, lead stylist at Annie Heyward Styling, a luxury and executive styling service in St. Louis. “You get to go to the extreme of your fashion style, and a lot of people like to go all out.”

There are staples seen year-over-year on the outdoor music scene: countrycore like Western hats and boots, denim-on-denim, bandanas and all the fringe, as well as breezy button-downs and bohemian-style dresses; bleached and distressed denim; ’70s glam and ’90s grunge; breathable lace, mesh and crochet sets; floral prints; oversized retro sunglasses; and chunky jewelry.

For the 2025 festival season, look forward to a blend of Western revival meets contemporary cowgirl styles, says Carrie Hitzfeldt, who co-owns Pistols N Vixens, a boutique with locations in St. Charles and Lake St. Louis, with her mother.

ensembles that combine black leather with lace,” she says.

Other festival staples will return with a twist. “Tiedye is making a comeback,” Keller says. “Sheer fabric is popular – things like slips or a sheer tank top with a mini skort or a skirt with a slit. We’re seeing cutouts everywhere, especially going into spring.” She also anticipates cloud dresses, balloon and puffy skirts, and fringe dresses and crop tops paired with ’70s flower crowns. “Leather is big for 2025 but might be too warm for a hot environment, so you could wear a leather skirt or short for the day and add a tight once the sun goes down,” Keller says, “or a leather statement jacket that you throw over your shoulder or pack with you and pull out at night.”

According to Tammy Heet, co-owner of Assassin Vintage on Cherokee Street in St. Louis, fringe and skin have dominated since the ’60s, but she anticipates a resurgence of vintage concert tees this season. “True style is not cookie-cutter,” she says. “If I were planning my outfit, the vibe of my favorite bands on the roster and the weather would be my styling drivers.”

Hitzfeldt agrees weather and concert timing are the top factors when considering your outfit: “The planning process generally kicks off with an exploration of the festival’s atmosphere and theme – researching the lineup, venue and anticipated weather conditions. We often style clients for Stagecoach since our brand embodies a Western and edgy aesthetic. We create vision boards featuring color schemes and textures that reflect the festival’s vibe.

are distinctive and limitededition items. Begin with a base layer or star piece that can be complemented with additions like a light jacket or kimono that can be removed as temperatures rise.”

Incorporate adaptable, mix-and-matchable pieces for all-day concerts in climates we don’t see here in the Midwest. “When dealing with desert heat at Burning Man, for example, breathable fabrics are a must, like a crochet tank top and loosefitting jean,” Keller says.

Complete your look with statement jewelry – think long feather earrings, chunky turquoise rings, layered lightweight necklaces, trendy chokers, small handbags adorned with tooled leather and long fringe details, and charms on bracelets, bags and shoes. “Stand out with a vented straw cowgirl hat creatively reimagined with floral hatbands, hat pins, feltburned motifs or appliqués

as well as brightly colored cowgirl boots featuring intricate designs, extravagant crystal embellishments and added bows,” says Hitzfeldt – or customize a breathable trucker hat at the trucker hat bar at Pistol N Vixens’ Lake St. Louis location.

For footwear, “heels should be avoided at all costs,” according to Keller, and suede and leather aren’t the best for heat, rain or spills. Hitzfeldt advises against waiting until the day of the festival to break in new high-top sneakers, cowboy boots or moto boots. “A helpful tip is to use boot inserts or memory foam insoles for comfort,” she says, “or layer a nylon sock underneath a boot sock to minimize friction and prevent blisters. Hat inserts can also be useful for sizing and sweat management in hot conditions.”

“The goal is to have a killer look and feel comfortable for the duration of the show,” Heet says, with additional sage advice: “Definitely avoid hard-to-getout-of pieces since you can never anticipate the lines at the port-a-potties!”

From head to toe (and everything in between, including finishing touches like metallic temporary tattoos, body glitter and face gems), an outdoor festival is a chance to explore the outer limits of your style.

Bach THE BA BACH SOCIETY OF ST. LOUIS PREPARES FOR ITS ANNUAL FESTIVAL CELEBRATING THE C COMPOSER’S WORKS AND INFLUENCE.

or 84 seasons, The Bach Society of St. Louis has been a cornerstone of the city's classical music scene, celebrating the works of Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach through dynamic performances, educational programs and even a dedicated podcast.

Dr. William B. Heyne founded the Bach Choir in 1941, making it St. Louis’ oldest semi-professional chorus, now with more than 60 singers. Although it was founded under a different name, its original purpose remains intact: to share J.S. Bach’s music with the community. Heyne’s chorus was tremendously successful soon after its founding, which inspired him to establish an annual St. Louis Bach Festival.

BSSL is known for blending artistic preservation with creative innovation that enriches the community and engages audiences.

The Bach Society of St. Louis chorus and orchestra present at least four major concerts each season that highlight the legendary composer's work alongside impactful compositions by other talents.

“To honor J.S. Bach's monumental legacy, we perform at least one of his large works each season, but our performance repertoire also extends beyond Bach,” says Melissa Payton, executive director of BSSL. “Knowing that Bach’s influence resonates across centuries and multiple genres, we’re intentional about actively connecting his genius to a diverse range of artistic expressions and genres, highlighting his enduring relevance and inspiring both seasoned and new audience members.”

BSSL performs classical and contemporary works inspired by Bach, including pieces by George Frideric Handel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Eric Whitacre and Howard Goodall.

The society is also dedicated to promoting and supporting the creation of new music.

“To commemorate both our 80th anniversary and Maestro Sparger's 35th year as music director and conductor, we commissioned ‘O Little One Sweet’ from the renowned Mack Wilberg, music director of The Tabernacle Choir [at Temple Square],” Payton says. “This exquisite work premiered at our 2021 Christmas Candlelight Concert at Powell Hall and was subsequently embraced by Wilberg himself, earning a place in The Tabernacle Choir's 2024 Christmas Special broadcast on PBS, a testament to its beauty and enduring appeal.”

Beyond performances, the society offers a range of educational programs for students at various levels, including free educational concerts, Finding Your Voice lessons program, vocal masterclasses and a video series. Additionally, the society provides a scholarship program for aspiring soloists under the age of 32 who are training for professional careers.

Committed to making Bach’s music more accessible, BSSL also produces “Bach Talk,” a podcast that has gained international recognition, reaching listeners in 60 countries. Hosted by classical music radio veteran Ron Klemm, this monthly podcast features musical insights, compelling stories and the people who bring Bach’s compositions to life.

Additionally, BSSL hosts the annual St. Louis Bach Festival, collaborating with a variety of local arts organizations to explore innovative artistic intersections. This year, the society will conclude its 84th season with the festival in April and May, featuring several concerts and community events

and offering something for everyone to enjoy.

“Past festivals have juxtaposed Bach's music with modern jazz, African-American spirituals, Indian classical music, musical theater, cabaret, opera, dance and even visual art to create unexpected and thought-provoking artistic experiences,” Payton says. “These cross-genre collaborations not only introduce new audiences to Bach, but also illuminate the connections across the St. Louis arts community, fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts in our city.”

The festival kicks off on April 11 with a free educational concert featuring the 2024-2025 Bach Society Young Artist award recipients: soprano Rita Schien, mezzo-soprano Calista Goldwasser, alto Kelly Beekman and baritone Jack McFarling. These talented singers will share their musical journeys and experiences in pursuing a career in music.

On April 12, the festival continues with a special performance of all six of Bach’s “Brandenburg Concertos.” Led by Concertmaster Lenora-Marya Anop, members of the Bach Society Orchestra will bring these timeless masterpieces to life.

Later in the month, on April 27, BSSL will present Bach’s “Mass in B Minor.” Under the direction of music director and conductor A. Dennis Sparger, the Bach Society Chorus and Orchestra will deliver a stirring interpretation of this monumental work, capturing its depth and brilliance.

The next highlight of the festival is “Bach at the Bistro: Broadway Reimagined” on May 6 at Jazz St. Louis. Led by Assistant Conductor Stephen Eros, this unique event showcases individual Bach Society Chorus members as they present creative mashups and reimagined Broadway favorites, offering a fresh take on beloved show tunes and timeless classics.

The festival concludes on May 10 with the Young Artist Showcase, celebrating the exceptional talents of the 2024-2025 Bach Society Young Artist award recipients.

BSSL is a powerful testament to the evolution of classical music and the enduring importance of celebrating its rich legacy.

“Classical music, far from being a relic of the past, is a vibrant and evolving art form,” Payton says. “We can connect with the masterpieces that have shaped our musical heritage while also celebrating the innovative works of contemporary composers. This dynamic interplay between tradition and innovation is a key element of classical music's enduring appeal, ensuring its continued relevance for generations to come.”

These cross-genre collaborations not only introduce new audiences to Bach, but also illuminate the connections across the St. Louis arts community, fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts in our city.
