t’s not a bird; it’s not a plane – it’s a drone delivering potentially life-saving treatment to Missourians. Mid-America Transplant, a St. Louisbased organ procurement nonprofit, is launching the nation’s first-ever dedicated health care drone corridor to transport organ donor blood samples in Missouri. Kevin Lee, president and CEO of the organization, says discussions of establishing the corridor in partnership with Texas-based drone health care company Valkyrie UAS Solutions along Interstate 44 began in 2023. On April 1, the 160-mile-long corridor, which stretches from Springfield to St. Louis, officially opened with its first test flight. “We’re really starting out in St. Albans to Rolla; the hub will be in Rolla on the north side of the airport,” Lee says. “The drone will receive a battery change in Rolla and continue to just outside the Springfield community.”

Lee says the drones fly between 350 to 400 feet off the ground and that MidAmerica Transplant is working to inform the community on the drones’ purpose. “We just want to ensure to the best of our ability that people know what’s going on, and they’re well-educated on what these drones are doing and how they’re supporting health care,” he says. Ty Harmon, CEO and co-founder of Valkyrie UAS Solutions, says test flights are being performed daily. “It’s a new modality of transportation, so we want to make sure that nothing bad happens to the blood samples as we transport them,” he says. “Ultimately, when we hit a point that the chief medical officer at Mid-America Transplant, Dr. Gary Marklin, has sufficient information, we will begin moving research blood samples to validate our hypothesis. … [Then, we will] receive the approval and certification to begin moving real donor

families’ labs up to St. Louis.” Harmon projects real-world missions will begin sometime in late August or early September. Lee says the continued use of drones may change the face of health care in rural Missouri altogether. “We know [that] a lot of people living outside of St. Louis don’t necessarily [want to] have to drive into St. Louis to receive health care,” Harmon says. “So if there’s a way that drones can be used to extend [health care services] out so that they can receive it in their own community, that’s an exciting possibility.” According to Lee, there have been discussions on opening future corridors across Missouri and Illinois in areas like Poplar Bluff, Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, and Hannibal. e’re just so tired. About a third of American adults have occasional insomnia, defined as the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep, according to the American Medical Association. And 10% of the adult population has chronic insomnia, which occurs for at least three nights a week for three or more months. “An adult spends close to a third of [their] life sleeping,” says Mercy sleep specialist Dr. Anup Katyal. “It’s like the battery of your car, [which] needs to be charged, [but] for a human being to function, [sleep is how we recharge. And it] is very important for both physical and emotional health as well as learning.” Those with chronic insomnia need a complete medical assessment, which considers underlying causes like anxiety or depression, sleep apnea, and medications, he adds. Most adults need seven to eight hours of quality sleep per night, although sleep needs vary by age and other individual factors. The key is to feel alert and awake during the day, Katyal notes. People who find daytime sleepiness affects their ability to function should see a doctor. “One must look at several conditions, including insufficient sleep, obstructive sleep apnea, periodic limb movements in sleep, narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, and mood disorders,” he says. “In addition, elderly people can present with episodes of acting out their dreams – called REM behavior disorder – that needs attention. Patients with insomnia … benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy, which is the first line of treatment. Patients with restless limb syndrome … may also

benefit from seeking help from a sleep specialist.” Before considering treatment with sleep aids, whether prescription or over-the-counter, Katyal encourages everyone to address their sleep hygiene. Among the most important aspects: Put down your phone and turn off the TV and laptop at least an hour before lights out. Many people scroll or browse in bed, which does not lend itself to restful sleep. Other sleep hygiene guidelines include avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and exercise close to bedtime. Obstructive sleep apnea is a significant and concerning cause of poor sleep and daytime sleepiness. Katyal points out that it is associated with high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, high blood sugar, irregular heartbeats, blood clots, memory problems, and kidney disease. He begins sleep apnea assessment by asking patients about STOP-BANG: Snoring, Tiredness during the day, Observed breathing lapses at night, high blood Pressure, high BMI, Age, Neck circumference, and Gender. “Everyone who snores does not have sleep apnea, but everyone who has sleep apnea snores,” he says. “Diagnosis is made by means of [an] overnight sleep study, at home or inpatient. In children, sleep apnea is usually a mechanical problem, and treatment involves surgery – [specifically,] tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. Her studio prioritizes clean beauty: “5-7-9 free” polishes void of toxic chemicals, thorough sanitation, and intentional client care. Here, Robinson shares how to determine whether a salon is truly considering your well-being, plus what nail styles are trending this summer.

When choosing a salon, what should a client look for to ensure that it’s safe? A safe salon should properly disinfect tools between each client, use clean liners or thoroughly sanitized pedicure bowls, and maintain a tidy workspace. Clients should feel comfortable asking how tools are cleaned and whether technicians are licensed and trained in sanitation protocols. A good salon should also prioritize nail health over trends. Technicians should never aggressively file the natural nail, force product removal, or ignore signs of irritation or infection.

For pregnant clients, ventilation and product choices are especially important. I recommend looking for salons that prioritize clean beauty practices, use low-odor or non-toxic products when possible, and have good airflow to minimize strong chemical exposure. Clients should also inform their nail technician about their pregnancy so services can be adjusted for comfort and safety if needed.

How do you ensure there are no harsh fumes or harmful chemicals in your studio? We reduce harsh fumes by choosing not to offer traditional acrylic services, which are often associated with strong odors and airborne chemicals. Instead, we focus on healthier nail care alternatives and lower-odor products to create a more comfortable environment for both clients and technicians. We also prioritize sanitation and wellness through our waterless manicure services and non-jetted pedicure bowls, which allow for easier and more effective cleaning and disinfection between clients.

What are a few styles you can recommend for this season? For clients who love to make a statement, I recommend nails with chrome finishes, aura designs, vibrant summer shades, textured details, or rich jewel tones. This season is all about expressive color and high-shine finishes that feel both playful and elevated. ith a shared belief that a stylish outfit can help anyone take on the world, best friends Lisa Rose and Angela Trokey launched Pleated Boutique in St. Louis in September 2017. “We kept hearing women say, ‘I have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear,’ and we knew we could fix that,” Rose laughs. The store was born from a desire to make shopping easier for busy women and take the guesswork out of getting dressed. Rose adds, “We believe the right outfit has the power to transform how a woman feels about herself, and that confidence should be accessible to everyone.” The co-owners, who met as Tri Delta sorority sisters at Southeast Missouri State University, drew on their postgraduate experience – Rose’s success in sales and Trokey’s marketing expertise and creative instincts – to build a fashion business together. ach summer, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis offers internships through Teen Museum Studies, a program in which high school students select a St. Louis-based artist and curate an exhibition for the public. TMS gives students direct access to museum careers and hands-on experience working with artists, museum staff, and peers. “CAM staff members visit the classroom throughout the program to share their experience,” says Brandon Barr, the teen and adult programs manager. “From the curatorial and the marketing and communications teams to our executive director, students get a peek behind the institutional curtain and develop a deeper understanding of the large team that keeps a museum running properly.” Students have real authority in this program, making choices that influence every step of the process. “They make all of the main decisions, [such as] developing exhibitions and participating in the development of layouts for installations,” Barr says. “I help guide them, but I ultimately cannot influence their selections.” Beyond skill building, the internship reflects the broader realities students bring into the classroom. “Our youth have navigated so much change happening throughout the St. Louis region: changes in schools, neighborhoods, and their own

lives. And yet, they come into these spaces ready to create … and ready to show us what’s possible when their voices are centered,” Barr says. The 2025 TMS cohort selected Janie Stamm’s work for an exhibition on climate, ecology, and queer culture, resulting in “Janie Stamm: Mermaid’s Purse.” Students were drawn to her use of found objects, including shells and sea sponges, and to the conversations sparked around climate change and queer spaces. “These are relevant topics that they will inherit and have to decide how society approaches in the future,” Barr says. “I think what is so great about TMS is that it hands the agency over to the teens to decide what and how these topics are treated. It is a small view of what the future might be like for them and allows them to build a sense of leadership.” Barr aims for visitors to draw inspiration from Stamm and the students. “I hope [they] leave with a better understanding of how queer culture and the natural environment are more connected than they might think,” Barr says. “Both queer spaces and ecosystems face very real, ongoing threats to their survival, and Janie makes it easier to hold both of those truths at the same time. I hope that visitors, especially students, take away that anything is possible, and to see beyond the institutional façade that so many places create.” “Janie Stamm: Mermaid’s Purse” is on display in the Education Galleries at CAM through Aug. 9. lone in its greatness.” The Muny proved the truth of its slogan when awarded the 2025 Regional Theatre Tony Award. “Last summer was a fantastic season,” says Mike Isaacson, artistic director and executive producer. “We’re going to make Season 108 even better.” Two musicals are making their Muny premieres: “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations” (July 27 to Aug. 2), a jukebox musical about the legendary Motown group, and “Something Rotten!” (Aug. 17 to 23), a musical comedy about a pair of Elizabethan-era brothers who, though stifled in the shadow of William Shakespeare, attempt to create the world’s first musical. The Muny’s season also includes returning favorites “Hairspray,” which opened the summer slate from June 15 to 21; “Shrek the Musical” now running through July 2; the venerable Rodgers & Hammerstein classic “South Pacific” from July 6 to 12; the Disney musical “Newsies” from July 16 to 22; and the perennial audience favorite “Meet Me in St. Louis” from Aug. 6 to 13. n Big Bend Boulevard, Humble Pie features a wide selection of sweet and savory options to suit a variety of tastes. The handcrafted pizza and ice cream soda fountain concept comes from chef Mark Lucas, who also owns Fozzie’s Sandwich Emporium, the gourmet sandwich shop down the road. Lucas, a Columbus, Indiana, native, grew up in the restaurant industry and brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. “My mom ran a catering business out of our house when I was younger, and I worked in restaurants throughout high school,” he says. After graduating with degrees in culinary arts and food service management from Johnson & Wales University, he moved to Beaver Creek, Colorado to jumpstart his career in the industry. Lucas later relocated to St. Louis to help his good friend Mike Johnson of Sugarfire Smokehouse open a concept called Café Mira. He has also been a partner in several other restaurants, including Boogaloo and El Scorcho. In 2014, he debuted Fozzie’s; three years later, he opened the first iteration of Humble Pie in Ladue, which shuttered the same year. With this new version of Humble Pie, open since December 2025, the chef has created a larger menu and dining room for guests to enjoy his take on pizzas, small plates, and desserts. The approachable, family-friendly eatery fills the space previously occupied by Del Pietro’s. “We have a wide gamut of food offerings that includes pizzas, sandwiches, burgers, and

wraps with global twists [and] influences from all over,” Lucas says. Lucas’ pizza features a thin Chicagostyle crust. “It’s not a cracker crust – it’s an actual yeast dough. It’s thin and crispy with toppings all the way out to the edge,” Lucas says. His most popular creation thus far is a unique departure from these options, however: the deconstructed toasted ravioli pizza that was originally made for 314 Day. “It was such a big hit that it earned a permanent spot on the menu,” he

says. It features a breaded pasta sheet topped with red sauce, a mix of seasoned Italian sausage and ground beef, Provel, and mozzarella. Additional highlights include the Humble Garden pizza with broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, Roma tomatoes, artichokes, portobello mushrooms, roasted garlic, crispy eggplant, red sauce, and mozzarella; Mexican street corn dip; and one of Lucas’ favorites: sambal coconut chicken skewers with a Thai peanut sauce slaw. In the front area, staff behind a frozen treats counter concoct colorful sodas, Dole Whip desserts, and stacked milkshakes. “There’s something here for everyone,” Lucas says. ome say it’s all about the journey to get there – not the destination itself – and U.S. Route 66 might be proof of that point. Dating back to 1926, the “Mother Road” was one of the nation’s original highways, stretching from Chicago to Santa Monica and covering 2,448 miles of road through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Route 66 celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, with communities across the country, including in St. Louis, marking the milestone with special events. Before you set off exploring, learn about three signs that offer a glimpse into the historical significance of the Mother Road.

Located at the corner of Skinker and Clayton roads, this looming, eye-shaped colossus is said to be 40 feet tall and 60 feet wide. Between the 1920s and 1950s, as the country became more reliant on cars and highways, gas companies like Amoco grew to meet demand. Although BP acquired Amoco in 1998, it reinstated the brand in 2017 – meaning this hard-to-miss St. Louis landmark, which arrived in 1922, is here to stay.

Unforgettable for its 22-degree bend in the middle, Chain of Rocks Bridge was built as part of Route 66, opening for vehicular traffic in 1929. The mile-long Mississippi River crossing now carries pedestrians between Missouri and Illinois and sports a few homages to its Mother Road origins along the way. Classic fixtures like a rounded retro motel sign, Route 66 signs, state line markers, and panels detailing the bridge’s history and water intake towers all greet modern-day visitors making the journey.

If you squint as you approach the Holiday Inn St. Louis SW – Route 66 by IHG, you can almost see through time to an era of roadside motor courts, glowing neon, and the Mother Road’s glory days. And luckily enough, the current hotel integrated this iconic sign into its design. According to blog Route 66 News, it was relit in 2024 after Sunset Hills Historical Society and the Route 66 Association of Missouri agreed to restore it. The motel advertised “85 lovely, air-conditioned rooms and suites” with phones, TVs, room service, and a restaurant.

utting the “CHAMP” in “champion” since 1998, this nonprofit harnesses the healing power of the canine-human bond to serve clients in the St. Louis area. CHAMP (Canine Helpers Allow More Possibilities) Assistance Dogs connects service animals with veterans, children, and adults with mobility or cognitive challenges free of charge for the lifetime of the partnership. CHAMP focuses on a range of placement categories for its dogs: public-access service animals (for adults with disabilities out and about in a changing environment), home-service animals (for adults and children with disabilities at home), placement with families (for children, adults, or families needing companionship or therapeutic support), and facility animals (to partner with therapists, counselors, or trained facilitators in a professional setting). CHAMP pooches significantly improve the quality of life for their partners by increasing independence, confidence, and emotional well-being both at home and in public. At home, they help with everyday tasks like picking up items, opening doors, retrieving medications, and assisting with mobility – which reduces reliance on caregivers and allows partners to manage daily life more independently. Beyond physical assistance, CHAMP dogs provide companionship and support that can reduce stress, anxiety, and isolation while boosting confidence and motivation. In public, they help partners navigate stores, schools, workplaces, and community spaces more safely and comfortably. CHAMP’s workforce is 96% volunteers – nearly 200 helpers currently – most of whom come to the organization without any experience or training initially. The most consistent need is for puppy-raisers, as CHAMP dogs always live with their handlers or partners and not in kennels. The pups undergo two-year, fear-free, positive professional training, and they cannot advance without foundational skills such as house manners, basic obedience, public socialization, and the ability to build a partner’s confidence. “Volunteers often tell us this work is deeply fulfilling because they can see the direct impact these dogs have on individuals and families in our community, whether through a 5-minute visit with

a sick child or a lifetime service dog partnership,” says director of development Lori Moore-McMullen. Over the past five years, the number of individuals CHAMP serves has annually increased, and the organization has seen a substantial rise in requests for facility canines. “More children are experiencing anxiety, trauma, loneliness, and emotional stress while families, schools, and communities often lack enough resources to fully meet those needs,” Moore-McMullen adds. “Our facility dogs help reduce anxiety, support emotional regulation, and create a sense of safety for children facing difficult situations. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: DOLLY MOLLOY Since CHAMP Assistance Dogs’ very first year as a nonprofit, volunteer Dolly Molloy has been with the organization, raising both puppies and spirits for the past 27 years. She initially came on board to give her aging golden retriever Bingo an energetic friend and was immediately hooked with the experience of raising little “fluffballs.” “It’s never a short trip to the grocery store when you have a puppy in training!” Molloy says. “There are sleepless nights, puppy behaviors to correct, housebreaking with the little ones, but I also get a lot of exercise and get to meet all kinds of people. And there’s those wonderful moments when the puppy is sleeping curled up in your lap. or many people, dogs are considered part of the family. They are the companions who greet us at the door, tails wagging, when we return from work. They depend on us for care and comfort, and in return, give us the same. But what happens to our fuzzy friends when a stay in the hospital or limited mobility requires a helping hand? That’s where Clare’s House comes in. The local nonprofit has provided “compassionate, short-term fostering for family dogs and assistance to pet parents” since its founding in 2018. Completely donation-funded and volunteer-run, it’s led by more than 35 volunteers who fundraise, dog- and house-sit, walk dogs, and maintain the Clare’s House home in Valley Park for the pups. “Clare’s House was inspired by my Uncle Norm at my mother, Clare McGinty’s, funeral in 2009,” founder Terry Economos says. “He wanted to get a pet, but who would take care of it if something happened to him?” Norm then adopted two dogs, one of whom went to live with Economos after he passed – a full-circle moment that reflects the mission of Clare’s House. The organization’s goal is to reunite pets with their families – though Economos notes it’s a dream of hers to create the Clare’s House Fur-ever Home, “where dogs who can’t return home can live happily ever after,” she says. For now, Clare’s House relies on volunteers and donations to carry out its programs – one of which includes using Clare’s House Care Funds to work with veterinarians on a case-by-case basis. Each month, the nonprofit also donates more than 1,000 pounds of dog food to its neighbor, Circle of Concern food pantry. To date, Clare’s House has donated more than 35,000 pounds of dog and cat food. “We provide every dog with a a Clare’s House Forever tag on their collar, when they go home, that [includes our phone number] if they need help. Once a Clare’s House pup, always a Clare’s House pup,” Economos says. “We’ve had pups come back up to four times. … This

gives the [pet parent] a sense of peace when they know their pet will be taken care of if something happens to them.” For Economos, the volunteers are every bit as important as the dogs and their families. “The volunteers do so much: help with fundraisers, donate monthly to the house, love on the pups, brush them, pick up their poop,” she laughs. “The pet’s world just turned upside down and they need to know they will be taken care of until they go home. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: LORI SCHONEBAUM When volunteer Lori Schonebaum retired, Economos reached out to her – and it’s easy to understand why. “I [called Terry back] several months later. It seemed like the perfect way to utilize my skillset while getting my dog fix, too,” Schonebaum says. With a background in communications, Schonebaum proved well suited to raise awareness of volunteer opportunities, fundraising efforts, and the resources available through Clare’s House via social media, flyers, brochures, and email campaigns, among other strategies. Schonebaum also volunteers at the nonprofit’s Valley Park home and says its mission resonates with her on a personal level. “If I did have a dog right now, being single with no family in the area, I can so appreciate how important it would be to have a resource like Clare’s House if something happened to me,” she says. “I see how safe and loved the dogs are, and I really know we’re making a difference when we get heartfelt thank-you letters from their parents after they go home.” When asked about Clare’s House and its impact on the community, Schonebaum raises an important point. “People can put their energy into getting better instead of worrying about their furry family member,” she offers. “We help get them through short-term hurdles.”

ome kids in the St. Louis Public School system face challenges due to a lack of steady support at home. Established in 1997, Fathers & Families Support Center began with a single employee teaching the first class of fathers the following year, in 1998 – a response to this ongoing problem which the organization’s founder, Halbert Sullivan (1951-2021), experienced firsthand. He created and developed FFSC to help uninvolved fathers step up and take responsibility for their children. Sullivan was all too aware of this devastating cycle – he’d lived it first as a son and then as a father. By the age of 17, he’d already committed three offenses and violated probation, kicking off a period of addiction, crime, homelessness, and imprisonment. In 1993, Sullivan finally hit rock bottom. “One day, he woke up on a park bench and realized he didn’t want that life anymore. He got cleaned up,” says Sid Officer, FFSC communications manager. Sullivan enrolled in a program and remained sober for the rest of his life. After rehabilitation, he quickly earned his associate’s degree, followed by his bachelor’s degree at Fontbonne University and master’s degree at the prestigious Brown School of Social Work at Washington University. Working within the SLPS system, Sullivan did everything he could to help kids stay in school. But unstable family lives and absent fathers made this nearly impossible. Sullivan founded FFSC and began combing the streets of St. Louis to find uninvolved fathers, encouraging them to join his program, which could teach them how to become active in the lives of their children. The first class graduated in 1998. Today, FFSC offers several key services including Family Formation, an immersive, six-week program that empowers fathers and mothers to learn the skills necessary for effective parenting. “Once you break these men open in the six-week program, they’re really just little boys who want love,” Officer says. “But nothing’s going to happen until they get to know themselves. It’s not an easy program. When participants drop out, many of them come back. They know how serious the program is and [that] half-measures won’t cut it.”

The Youth Leadership & Development Program helps youth aged 14 to 24 follow successful paths to thriving futures, and the six-week program, Re-Entry Project, helps prepare fathers and men transitioning out of prison to become productive members of society. Fathers’ Rap is a peer-to-peer support group for FFSC alumni and people who can’t participate in traditional programming. These efforts, Officer says, are incredibly successful. FFSC’s internal data shows that 78% of program participants reported increased co-parenting relationship skills, while 71% reported increased interaction with their children. The organization has directly impacted 23,000 fathers and made a difference in the lives of more than 57,000 children. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: LONNIE WILLIAMSON Lonnie Williamson, a volunteer for almost 20 years at FFSC, first became involved with the organization as an employee of the United Way of Greater St. Louis. He soon found himself spending two days a week at the Fathers’ Rap program. “I’d seen a lot of kids getting in the wrong direction,” Williamson says. “The program helped me and everyone else in the community. We put away our guns and started thinking about working and taking care of our families.” Now, Williamson serves as the volunteer Fathers’ Rap facilitator, a role in which he shines as a trusted advisor to men who meet after traditional work hours to discuss topics such as personal responsibility, child abuse, neglect, parenting skills, and more. Through the program, participants can access family therapists, social workers, and job developers. Williamson attends all Family Formation Program graduations to support those continuing their journey in responsible parenthood. He also attends staff meetings and training sessions to deepen his understanding of how best to serve families in the St. Louis metro and within the organization. “His commitment to help those most in need is superior,” says FFSC CEO Cheri D. Tillis. “Lonnie continues to serve well those that attend his groups, providing valuable advice and life lessons to those that have come to trust him as a father figure and life coach.” Lonnie with his sister Carol

rowing up, children and youth may find that navigating new schools, part-time jobs, and social interactions all present challenges. For students with autism, engaging with the world can often be overwhelming. Although it affects everyone differently, autism spectrum disorder can sometimes alter communication, emotion, language development, and sensory processing. Autism can also create obstacles when it comes to building relationships, learning, and living everyday lives. As a result, students with autism often feel misunderstood and are left behind in their educational needs. Giant Steps of St. Louis, located in Maplewood, aims to equip these students with the skills needed to lead independent lives. The therapeutic day school was founded in 1994 and educates students from ages 4 to 21. With 26 students currently enrolled, Giant Steps’ core philosophy is to provide pupils with a highly structured, sensory-friendly environment to improve behavioral, social, academic, and vocational foundations. A low student-to-teacher ratio enables each student to receive an individualized education focused on the core challenges children with autism face. The curriculum uses evidence-based autism-intervention strategies and is designed to address core deficits, build independence and confidence, and enhance social skills though traditional therapies, such as academics, speech, and occupational therapy as well as music therapy, physical education, art, and theater. Having spent nearly 30 years assisting students with autism in both public and private schools, executive director Dani Vescolani is determined to ensure that every student at Giant Steps succeeds. “Our specialized instruction utilizes one-on-one and small-group instruction to specifically address the behavioral and learning challenges that interfere with student progress in a traditional education setting,” she says. “We have a variety of different therapies to help each student reach their potential.” Giant Steps’ goal is to enable pupils to return to their public schools by aligning curriculum standards and programming for a successful transition, so students can be with their peers and kids in their neighborhood. A champion for all of its students, the nonprofit

gives children and youth with autism and their families hope, growth, and opportunities that these students might otherwise be unable to access in traditional schools. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: JEAN BURNS Unwavering in her dedication to improving students’ lives, Jean Burns is one of the superheroes helping Giant Steps achieve its mission. The retired teacher brings 40 years of experience with public and private schools to the nonprofit. “I was at another school for about 10 years, and I previously had ... a 10-year run in the city and at a private school. I just needed a change. Then I saw an ad for a position at Giant Steps,” Burns says. “I went for an interview and liked everything I saw, and I knew it was something that … would work.” Burns and Vescolani have worked together for a decade, first teaching alongside one another at Giant Steps. “Jean was a huge help when I started the director’s position,” Vescolani says. “She brought years of experience working with students with special needs. She was creative, patient, and hands-on in her instructional style. She understood the core challenges our students faced.” The nonprofit’s novel approach continues to impress the longtime volunteer. “I’ve never seen this kind of program anywhere,” Burns says. “We succeed because of the way everyone works as a team. That’s the whole key at Giant Steps. You don’t ever feel like you’re on your own.”

arb Fisher remembers her Aunt Alice fondly. A longtime volunteer at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, in 2010 Alice Provaznik overheard staff talking about mothers who needed help providing clothes and other essentials for their newborns. Provaznik began asking family and friends if they could assist in meeting this need, and in 2014, along with Fisher and Ron Laurentius, she created Sweet Babies, a nonprofit that gives new at-risk moms in need a plethora of supplies. After Provaznik’s death in 2018, Fisher became the executive director of Sweet Babies and, over time, expanded the organization’s programs and volume. Fisher works with two part-time employees and about 30 volunteers on campus at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, where they sort and pack supplies. “All [the] moms [we help] are struggling. They’re economically disadvantaged, they may have [experienced] domestic violence, they may live in shelters [or] have little to no family support [or] available resources,” Fisher says. Social workers at area hospitals help identify underserved mothers for whom Sweet Babies provides a large duffel bag stuffed with more than 135 items including more than 30 items of infant clothing in three sizes, 75 diapers, wipes, a thermometer, and other essential supplies. Last year, more than 1,100 new mothers received Sweet Babies duffels, and 200 babies received Safe Sleep Kits containing a portable crib. The nonprofit also provides necessary emergency supplies to families in need who receive care at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Due to privacy concerns, Fisher and her team never see the families they help, but knowing new mothers’ burdens are somewhat lifted makes the work worthwhile, she says. “There are some moms looking for help who find us because we have ‘babies’ in our name, and so, when they search for supplies online, we pop up.” With an increased volume and the nonprofit’s dedication to providing a full array of supplies, Fisher says Sweet Babies always welcomes donations of money or new items. “We need diaper cream, baby wash, lotion, clothing, onesies – the basics,” she says.

“Missouri has a high infant mortality rate, higher than the national average, and we want to provide whatever maternal and infant support is needed at this critical time in the life of both the mom and the newborn. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: KATHY SCHAEPERKOETTER Kathy Schaeperkoetter always enjoyed sewing. When the South County resident retired from her accounting career, she wanted to donate her time to a worthy cause, and in 2023 she found Sweet Babies, a perfect combination of volunteerism and the hobby she enjoys. Sweet Babies volunteers fill a variety of roles, but for Schaeperkoetter, sewing blankets, burp cloths, and other basic items is fulfilling for both her and the organization. “I was looking for something to do with new moms,” Schaeperkoetter says from behind a pile of 80 freshly sewn bibs on her dining room table. “And when I looked online and found this particular organization, it interested me because it’s a personal connection. I have three kids, so I know you need diapers and all these other things when you have a new baby. If a new mom doesn’t have those things, I just can’t imagine what it’s like.” Schaeperkoetter purchases all the material and thread for her Sweet Babies projects, which she considers an in-kind donation. She is a Sweet Babies board member and also helps shop for the organization, using Sweet Babies’ funds to purchase new clothing. “I feel like I’m buying a lot, but we go through it really fast,” she says. “Even if you don’t sew or crochet, we [always need volunteers to come in and pack duffel bags and] can use whatever help we can get,” Schaeperkoetter adds. “It’s really flexible and worthwhile.” Photo courtesy of Sweet Babies
