Oak Street Inn & Lounge

D

owntown Cottleville in St. Charles county is buzzing again thanks to the Oak Street Inn & Lounge, a historic property that underwent major renovations before reopening in 2024. The refreshed site now features eight luxury overnight rooms, a restaurant, a speakeasy, and a rooftop patio — amenities that have quickly turned it into a bustling destination.

“The Inn has been overflowing with guests!” owner Chelsey Sweeten says. “The Lounge and Speakeasy have been great additions to the community. We are so grateful to the town of Cottleville; our returning customers and the support they provide are fantastic.”

Originally constructed in 1862, the imposing building is unmistakable amid the Cottleville skyline. In past lives, it served as a general store and post office, a single-family home, an antique store, and a hotel. Sweeten and team opened the businesses in phases, starting with the Inn in May 2024. The Lounge – an upscale dining spot featuring American cuisine – opened a few months later in August 2024, and the Rooftop Patio followed soon after. Earlier this year, work was completed on the underground Speakeasy, which opened in March. “We also act as our own catering company now for private events on premise and off, meaning my team effectively operates five businesses out of this one building,” Sweeten says.

Reenvisioning a space that’s more than 160 years old isn’t easy. Sweeten shares the intentionality with which her team made the most of every square inch of the property. They lifted the building during construction, poured a new foundation, added a basement for the Speakeasy, and added Pink Willow (a breakfast, lunch, and brunch hot spot) to the side of the original structure.

All four levels offer unique experiences for guests, whether you’re staying the night, grabbing dinner in the Lounge, or just visiting for a good time. The Lounge, Rooftop Patio, Penthouse Suite, and Speakeasy are all available for private rental; and the property regularly hosts showers, rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, and events of all types.

The project took 3.5 years to complete, 10 months to open all business entities, and cost around $4.5 million. “It’s an honor to be a small part of the very long history here,” Sweeten says. “You can definitely feel all the years when you walk into this place.”

Small details throughout the property pay homage to its past. In the Lounge, visitors are first greeted by large digital charcoal renderings of five historic photos of the building, curated by local artist Lacy Shreves.

Each of the inn’s eight rooms include framed historical photos and maps of the town.

Sweeten says it was important to her team to recognize the building’s legacy, which is as much a part of Cottleville’s story as anything else in town. Honoring that history has also created meaningful connections with longtime residents.

“Right after opening, we had the pleasure of meeting a 94-year-old woman named Junia, who was born in Room 201, and her father and grandfather were Tiedemanns,” she says. “The Tiedemanns were the original owners of the general store and post office, and our famously delicious espresso martini is named after them: The Tiedemann.”

R

egular exercise is always at the top of a physician’s list of healthy habits that everyone should adopt. Many people heed that advice, lacing up their running or walking shoes and hitting the trails or pavement for workouts that benefit both body and mind.

And then, winter happens.

Should a drop in temperatures stop us from heading out? No, but a little caution is a good idea, advises Dr. Jeremy Hartman, a WashU Medicine physician at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as sports medicine. “I wouldn’t recommend going from not exercising in the cold to doing very vigorous outdoor exercise,” he says.

Cold-temperature exposure and exertion are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular issues, Hartman expands. Among those who aren’t fit, don’t spend much time outdoors, or have known heart disease, activities such as snow shoveling can be risky. The cold air may also lead to bronchospasms in which tiny airways in the lungs constrict, potentially triggering asthma. People who have cardiovascular issues or asthma should check with their doctors about recommendations specified to their level of risk.

With those caveats in place, Hartman says otherwise healthy individuals can venture out. “I think gradual exposure is probably your best bet,” he

says. “It’s not like you can train to exercise in the cold, so there’s nothing that quite beats gradually increased exposure.”

Even so, exercise in frigid temperatures requires some preparation.

Hartman stresses the importance of dressing in layers to help trap warm air closer to the body. Synthetic materials that do not wick sweat away from the skin are not advised.

“I think some good socks and good warm gloves are very helpful, and also make sure you keep your head covered,” he says. It turns out your mom was right – it’s a good idea to wear a hat because we lose body heat through the head. Resign yourself to hat-hair and cover your scalp and ears.

Wintry conditions like snow and ice pose additional risks of falling on slick surfaces, so play it safe and stay in when sidewalks or trails are slippery. However, that doesn’t excuse you from getting some exercise.

Hartman suggests finding a good body-weight resistance or other indoor workout routine online, and make sure to get up and move for five or 10 minutes every hour.

he best way to feed winter garden visitors is to grow plants that produce fruits and seeds, which birds like to eat.

The gold finches are particularly fond of my coneflower seeds, while robins prefer the holly berries after they have fermented.

Trees and shrubs that attract birds in winter include: viburnums dogwoods beautyberries any sumac variety

Annuals and perennials include: any coneflower variety any black-eyed Susan variety sunflower aster beebalm goldenrod blazing star ironweed rattlesnake master (my particular favorite) For grasses, use any of the following: bluestem prairie dropseed grama muhly river oats One of the most important factors is to remember why you have these plants and not to cut them down until spring. That preserves the seed heads for the birds as well as provides cover for them. This material also offers a habitat for solitary bees and other insects to overwinter in the garden.

With smart camera feeders, you can put feeders at some distance from the house and still enjoy seeing the avian visitors. Or use a suction cup window feeder to put the action right at the glass. This is a good amusement for your completely indoor cat.

The single best thing you can do for winter birds is to keep your house cat inside.

Feline predation is the No. 1 cause of death for songbirds. We can love our cats and our birds, just not in the same space.

Here are a couple of tricks I’ve learned with my birdfeeders: I installed a catch tray underneath my seed feeder to reduce the amount of litter below that can encourage weeds and mice.

Cheap birdseed may contain up to 70% filler, which adds to the mess. My customized no-waste mix includes cracked sunflower hearts, safflower seeds, and a little hulled white millet. I stopped using cracked corn and peanuts because the birds tossed them, and the mess attracted more undesirable critters. This change has reduced the number of nocturnal visitors like housecats, possums, and raccoons.

To further discourage the raccoons, I now use bird feeder hangers that sport extra-long (42”) iron swing arms equipped with black slinkies (lots of fun to watch on the critter cam).

The hot pepper suet and spoonfuls of cayenne pepper mixed with my seed have kept the squirrel problem down.

The finches have their own thistle feeder with a wire cage surround to prevent squirrels and larger birds from accessing it.

Add a hot rock electric heater to keep your birdbath water open.

L

ydia Crespo lovingly refers to her hometown as “Saint Chuck.”

Growing up reveling in all of St. Charles’ charms, from the historic district’s traditional festivals to its idyllic shops, she always dreamed of running her own business along the picturesque stretch of cobblestone.

In 2020, the proud native got her wish, launching Cozy Shop on Main Street. The store offers apparel and décor featuring the art school graduate’s own designs inspired by the charming community, including the signature Saint Chuck shirt. “It’s a very relaxed, small-town vibe,” she says of the city, “with people always going to the same festivals and parks, and [we] invite tourists to be part of St. Charles and wear it with pride.”

Previously, Crespo launched a successful clothing company, Argaman&Defiance, which sold collections in 300 boutiques nationwide and collaborated with major brands. She returned from Chicago, where she studied art, to her beloved hometown when her husband was offered a job in the area. Today, Crespo teaches classes at the Foundry Art Centre in addition to running Cozy Shop.

Now amid celebrating its fifth holiday season, Cozy Shop makes it

easy to gift a piece of that St. Charles charm. Following last summer’s move one door south on the storied street, the storefront more than doubled its size to 900 square feet. “We’re on a great block, with Grandma’s Cookies…and the gazebo [at Kister Park],” she says, adding the area is bustling with excitement – and even the occasional marriage proposal in the historic gazebo.

With more room to offer its small-batch, handcrafted inventory, designed by Crespo as well as fellow Midwest artisans, the boutique boasts “the best sweatshirts on Main Street,” according to the owner. A fan favorite features the trolley – “a big deal here in St. Charles,” Crespo says. Additional goodies, including tees and stickers, highlight more of the town’s treasures, from the iconic lantern-lined, cobblestone streets to its historic architecture and even Seaman, the dog who survived Lewis and Clark’s Louisiana Purchase expedition that ran through St. Charles.

Cozy Shop joins the community in celebrating its annual historical holiday event, Christmas Traditions, with the shopkeeper’s collectible ornaments. “They’re my drawings and we 3D print them – it’s where history meets technology,” Crespo says.

Crespo loves interacting with local neighbors to customers from around the world: “We help visitors live like a local. St. Charles is a hidden gem but we don’t want to keep it a secret,” she adds. “This community shaped my store, and I want to celebrate it with them.”

I

n Creve Coeur, Pierce Creek Cattle Company offers a new restaurant, bar, bakery, butchery, and market. The multifaceted concept, named Pierce Creek, debuted in July and features local products including the company’s pasture-raised beef with no added hormones or unnecessary antibiotics.

Co-owners Kent Evans and Rachelle L’Ecuyer became the fourth generation to take the reins at Pierce Creek Farm in 2018, since repopulating it with cattle. The couple brought 35 cows to the Lonedell, Mo., farm in 2019 and now have 100 total. In 2023, they launched The MOObile food truck, becoming well known for their signature smashburgers and tallow fries.

With the newly established Pierce Creek, the scope of the homegrown company’s environmentally conscious ethos has widened to feature more offerings than ever before. “Our mission has always been to provide local healthy beef, and when we opened this space, we expanded that into providing other local proteins that follow our practices,” L’Ecuyer says. “Our motto is as local as possible.”

The market comes well stocked with fresh produce, sustainably sourced goods,

and housemade bakery items, while the restaurant focuses on what L’Ecuyer calls “elevated comfort food,” including their popular burgers alongside nods to the building’s past life as Kohn’s Kosher Deli. Former owner Lenny Kohn makes his time-tested pastramis for the Pierce Creek menu, and previous patrons of Kohn’s can still find them among old favorites such as chocolate-covered, upside-down cupcakes.

Smashburgers come in four varieties such as the go-to MOObile, a double smash patty with American cheese on a toasted potato bun. A mushroom-and-swiss smashburger features roasted Ozark mushrooms and buttermilk dill sauce. “The beef really makes them special.

You can’t beat the flavor,” L’Ecuyer says.

“We wanted to make something we could eat for lunch – the goal was to not feel like we needed to go take a nap after. It’s a good amount of protein and perfect for a workday.”

Pair sandwiches with soups, salads, and side options such as farmhouse chili

and chopped steakhouse salad with balsamicmarinated steak. A breakfast menu, available from 8 to 11 a.m., offers everything from housemade bagels and schmear to babka French toast. From the bakery, choose from an array of offerings, including Kohn’s staples such as titzel rye bread (a traditional St. Louis-style rye bread with cornmeal crust).

At a newly installed, repurposed bar, Pierce Creek highlights area products from Blacksmith Distillery, Friendship Brewing Company, and Noboleis Vineyards, among others. he Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis invites visitors to celebrate creativity and community in its ongoing exhibition, “Access is an Invitation: CAM Connect Showcase,” a space where art and inclusion intersect.

“In the reimagining of CAM Connect – the museum’s initiative to strengthen social connection, community advocacy, and creative expression among groups historically excluded from cultural spaces, including people with disabilities, North St. Louis residents, and older adults – we want folks to feel like they can come on in. Like we are setting the space for them, with intention,” says Alexis Creamer, exhibition organizer and community access manager. “We want them to know that there is a place for them in the art ecosystem, and we want them to come experience it.”

The exhibition showcases a range of artworks, community conversations, and creative projects developed with CAM Connect participants and partners. Featured pieces include collaborative quilts from Central Baptist Church elders; artwork created through CAM’s Tornado Relief Summer Camp and at Fountain Park as part of 314 Oasis; and reflections collected in the North St. Louis Creative Field Guide, a resource highlighting neighborhood stories and local cultural knowledge.

Creamer emphasizes that the exhibition is meant to highlight the voices and experiences of these communities, setting the stage for a closer look at their creative contributions.

power of its own, and it’s rooted in present day, what is happening right now as a result of human connection through art,” Creamer says.

The exhibition features an interactive installation called the Disability Justice Dreamer Space, where the public is invited to share their voices; imagine accessible futures; and engage in dialogue about belonging, collaboration, and disability justice.

“The Dreamer Space honors individual voices and invites the broader community into the ideation process,” Creamer says. “Instead of us creating programming for people, we’re gathering what people offer, reading their words, learning from their reflections, and allowing those insights to shape what comes next.”

As a result, this exhibition is not only a celebration of collaboration and inclusion but also an opportunity for visitors to experience art shaped directly by the communities themselves.

“I hope visitors take away a sense that their thoughts matter, their experiences matter, and their dreams are part of shaping what we build,” Creamer says. “It’s all of us creating a shared space where disabled community members, advocates, and visitors can imagine and reimagine what we can do together.”

“Access is an Invitation: CAM Connect Showcase” is currently on display in the upper galleries at CAM through Feb. 8, 2026.

here’s a local neighborhood that has the power to transport you back to the 1950s. Hidden off Grant Road in the park-filled city of Crestwood, between Old Route 66 and Interstate 44, the Ridgewood subdivision contains dozens of ranch houses all designed by the same talented St. Louis architect, adding to its intriguing mid-century lore.

The architect in question is Ralph Fournier, who, alongside developer Burton Duenke, built Ridgewood’s collection of one-story homes, each with a similar footprint and layout, between 1951 and 1953. The shared low-slope roofs and geometric front windows lining each side of the street can make you feel as if you’ve stepped inside a time capsule.

With the Great Depression and World War II behind them, American families wanted to settle down in affordable family homes. People had more money to spend, and developers recognized this. Ranch-style housing was a sign of the times, according to Architectural Digest: It met demands for spaciousness with its open-floor plans; for a connection to the natural world with its patios and broad windows; and for the idea, generally, of accessible luxury. It evoked the American Dream.

“Mid-century is an interesting term,” Mary Reid Brunstrom, Ph.D., said in a 2015 symposium presented in part by WashU. “It links architecture in the United States to the growth and change resulting from post-War power and

prosperity – even as the geopolitics of the Cold War cast a haze of uncertainty over the period.

Like everything else at mid-century, architecture was shaped by these conditions.”

St. Louis is rich in architectural history and design. Much of it, both in the city and county, is under the threat of abandonment, demolition, and though sometimes necessary, new construction. In October, nonprofit organization ModernSTL held its annual home

tour, highlighting eight homes in the Ridgewood subdivision as well as their respective homeowners, who graciously entertained an all-day parade of guests eager to experience the 1950s revival. One couple living in Ridgewood told Ladue News that the subdivision had never experienced any demolitions or disasters – just the new coat of paint here and the pool addition there. Ticket sales from the tour are going toward obtaining a spot on the National Register of Historic Places to preserve Ridgewood’s title as a mid-century time capsule.

Even after the return of SNAP benefits, St. Louisans continue to struggle with food insecurity.

I

nflation and tariff-related price increases, federal food aid funding cuts, and the May tornado that devastated parts of the St. Louis area have all made 2025 an arduous year for those who are food insecure and for the organizations they lean on. When the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP – the federal government's largest anti-hunger program – screeched to a halt in early November, it further exacerbated the problem.

“Due to the stoppage of SNAP, [many people] for the very first time found themselves needing to use a food pantry,” says Kristen Wild, who has served since 2019 as president and CEO of Operation Food Search, a St. Louis-based nonprofit that helps feed more than 200,000 people each month. “I'd say that was the most challenging event that I have seen since I've worked at Operation Food Search.”

Some relief came when the federal government reopened and reinstated SNAP funding, but food banks and nonprofits still expect a heightened need this holiday season and into the new year, when some might lose SNAP benefits due to new requirements.

The latest data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that an average of 12.7% of Missouri households and 12.4% of Illinois households were food insecure throughout 2021 to 2023, meaning they lacked access to healthy or safe food. The Missouri Hunger Atlas 2025 report from the University of Missouri found that more families were food insecure in 2023 than in previous years, with rates of 18.4% in St. Louis city and 12.8% in St. Louis County. Among children in Missouri and Illinois, 1 in 6 face hunger, reports Feeding America, the largest hunger-relief organization in the U.S. “The rates of food insecurity were measured before all the recent challenges, so we know that those numbers are higher now,” Wild says. “[Winter is] often a challenging time because utilities are more expensive during the cold…months. Weather conditions can make it harder to get around if you don't have transportation. There are more expenses around the holidays. Children who rely on free and reduced school lunch and

school breakfast don't have access to them during Thanksgiving break and winter break, so it's often a really challenging time for families who struggle with food insecurity.”

Increased food drives, food distribution events, and community support have kept Operation Food Search functioning as needed as well as contributed to the expansion of its MetroMarket program, now a yearround mobile farmers’ market in local areas of Missouri and Illinois.

The St. Louis Area Foodbank recently hosted its largest free food distribution event in the nonprofit’s history, serving about 7,600 people on just one day in November. Foodbank president and CEO Meredith Knopp published a blog post about recent challenges and how to help those who are struggling. “From floods and tornadoes to government shutdowns and COVID-19, we have experienced change and stress,” she wrote. “Although it has been clunky at times, the good news is that we have weathered every one of these situations, and we will make it through this one, too.”

Here are a few ways you can help:

DONATE FOOD OR FUNDS. “When comparing food donations and financial donations, financial donations go further because we're able to buy at cost in bulk, and we don't incur any sales tax,” Wild says. But if you have food to share, certainly donate anything unopened, nonperishable, and still within its best-by date.

If buying food, gather a variety for different dietary and cultural needs, and note that

canned protein and baby foods and formula are especially useful. Drop off donations at OFS or the Foodbank, or check social media for a food drive or drop spot near you.

VOLUNTEER. Give your time to a local nonprofit, which can assign a task that fits your schedule and skillset. Lava Island, a new indoor playground emphasizing screen-free active play for both kids and caregivers, has erupted onto the scene in Rock Hill.

emember the “floor is lava” game from your childhood? Crank that up to 11, and you’ve got a sense of the fast-growing indoor themed playground, Lava Island. Erupting onto the scene earlier this month, the Rock Hill location is the eighth for the familyowned business based out of Colorado.

When asked about the name, co-founder and chief operating officer Celeste Henderson shares a story about trying to find a place to take her kids without electronic devices and being inspired by the game they played at home, hopping and climbing from one piece of furniture to the next without touching the floor. She and her husband, Boyd, recreated that into the play oasis that is Lava Island – 36,000 square feet featuring a three-level jungle gym spanning the entire space, a trampoline park, foam pits and a Jacob’s ladder, the famous volcano slide, a tricycle track, a jump tower over a landing pad, a 4-and-under toddler climbing and exploring area, and six different immersive themed party rooms that can be rented for birthdays and group celebrations.

“Something the founders thought a lot about when designing the playground is that everything is connected,” says Mandi Delgado, a member of Lava Island’s marketing team. “You can literally go from one side of the park to the other without touching the ground. So, you might be going up something, turning a corner, then going down something – and as a parent, you can join in on the fun or you can walk under different parts and follow along with [your kids] and take pictures.”

Parents and caretakers are also encouraged to play, climb, and interact with all the equipment in the space – the adult’s experience at Lava Island was taken as much into consideration as the child’s, with heightened levels of the jungle gym to accommodate all. Alternatively, parents can relax and monitor their kiddos with a beverage or snack from the full kitchen and coffee bar, which also includes kid-friendly favorites like pizza, burgers, wings, dino nuggets, smoothies, milkshakes, ice cream, and Lava Island’s signature funnel fries for refueling between fun.

“We designed and created Lava Island for everyone to play together,” Delgado says. “That was really important to us – to create a space where families and friends, adults and children, can connect and play together.

We get a lot of feedback and reviews saying, ‘Oh my gosh, I haven’t played like that since I was a kid,’ and ‘I’m sore from playing so much and having so much fun.’”

Another thing that sets Lava Island apart from other indoor parks: the absence of screens. In a world of arcade and video games, tablets and smartphones, smart TVs, and VR headsets, Lava Island is old-school, analog, active play.

“It allows kids to step away from those everyday distractions,” Delgado says. “When I take my kids places and the first thing they go to is the arcade, in my head, I’m like, I literally got you out of the house to get away from screens – not to go out and pay for screens!”

The space is designed like a tropical oasis, with hand-painted murals by a team of artists who customize the art for every location as well as 3D wild animals with which families can take pictures. Admission options are a one-hour pass ($16 for kids, $8 for adults) or an all-day pass ($22 for kids, $11 for adults), and infants 11 months and under are free. Both passes offer full access to the park, with no extra charge per area or attraction. The day pass includes re-entry for those wanting to burn off some energy in the morning for a couple hours and then come back after naptime, for example.

The Lava Island team also plans to partner with local schools on coordinating field trips, making donations to school auction fundraisers, and helping schools host a School Spirit Night where 20% of admissions goes back to the school. “We want to be a hub for the community to come in, connect, and play together,” Delgado says. Whether you’re 4 or 14 or 74, “Everyone gets to join in on the fun and make those memories together.”

THE TREASURED ARTS DESTINATION IN ST. LOUIS’ GRAND CENTER ARTS DISTRICT HAS ELEVATED THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE THROUGH ITS MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR CAPITAL CAMPAIGN.

efore you even walk in the door, The Sheldon greets you with its shiny, new facade – and that’s just the beginning. Since its grand reopening in early November, patrons have been delighted by The Sheldon’s updates, inside and out, says executive director Peter Palermo.

“The new marquee, awnings, lighting – the approach is totally different and really lights up our side of the street and announces that The Sheldon is a vibrant and exciting place to be,” he says. “And then you walk in. Previously, you walked in and 15 feet in front of you was a brick wall. Now, you walk into a bright, welcoming, modern art gallery with the welcome desk, box office, and big staircase before you. And I think, yes, jaws drop.”

Some of The Sheldon’s improvements are more function over form. Extra bathrooms and a bigger bar to keep lines shorter during intermission improve the visitor experience. These enhancements may not produce as much “wow” factor but allow visitors to “go about the work of having a good time,” Palermo says.

While The Sheldon’s 1920s-era parking garage and annex building were revamped for the galleries and lobby accoutrements, the historic 1912 concert hall remains, albeit with new carpeting. With an $11 million capital campaign still in progress, and $10 million already in hand, Palermo hopes to install a state-of-the-art sound system and build a control room where podcasts and audio from performances could be recorded and produced.

Palermo points out that donations for the final $1 million of the capital campaign are eligible for tax credits. “Every dollar donated gets 50 cents back in the form of a tax voucher. We have $1 million in those vouchers, and if we can rehome them, then we’ll make our goal,” he says.

While Palermo continues to shepherd The Sheldon through the final stages of its capital campaign, he oversees a busy slate of events.

Concerts are only one part of The Sheldon’s repertoire. Organizations and community groups use the space for various events and performances in addition to The Sheldon’s own lineup of shows.

“Of our own presentations coming up, I’m excited about [worldrenowned jazz trumpeter] Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra being here on Jan. 30,” Palermo notes. “Every time Wynton comes to town, he wants to play here. It’s a favorite spot for him, and we love having him here.” Marsalis will perform music composed by Duke Ellington, which was inspired by Ellington’s 1966 trip to Africa.

“And we’re excited about the [alt-country band] Cowboy Junkies coming here [on March 20]. We have everything from jazz to Americana to classical music here,” Palermo adds. Other upcoming performances

include Broadway show tunes with New Line Theatre’s Broadway Noir Deux on Jan. 9, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra Live at The Sheldon performing “Songs of Belonging” on Feb. 5, and jazz guitarist Pat Metheny on April 3.

The Sheldon also opens its doors to schoolchildren throughout the season. Dozens of classes visit for a curator-led gallery tour and performance. “We have a number of programs that we have created and produced over the past 25 years,” Palermo says. Themes include jazz, classical, and even a Lewis and Clark program that entertain and educate the more than 20,000 students who visit each year. “For those whose school systems can’t afford the tickets, we’ll cover it,” Palermo notes.

Reflecting on The Sheldon’s new image, Palermo says he is delighted patrons want to linger in the premier arts destination after performances. “I feel like the space is enveloping, and it’s a good vibe,” he adds. “It’s a unique treasure in St. Louis. It’s the finest venue in town for acoustically driven music, it’s an incredible and wonderfully curated art gallery, and I hope people make the effort to visit us.”
