ith the rising cost of living, many in our region are struggling to make ends meet. This is where United Way comes in, providing these individuals and families with the resources they need.

“Many people know United Way as a fundraiser, but we’re really a community problem solver,” says Michelle D. Tucker, president and CEO of United Way of Greater St. Louis. “We bring together the people, resources, and partnerships needed to solve challenges no one organization can solve alone. Every investment strengthens a coordinated network of nonprofits and community partners working together to help families find stability, build opportunities, and achieve long-term success. That’s how we create lasting impact across our region.”

United Way helps more than a million people each year through its 211 Referral Line, connecting over 250,000 individuals and families to essential resources each year. Additionally, United Way invests in more than 150 nonprofit partners, helping strengthen the systems that keep the entire community moving forward.

CHEF CRAFT

I

f you live in St. Louis or follow its food scene, chances are you know Gerard Craft – whether from one of his restaurants or St. Louis CITY SC, where he serves as chief flavor officer.

Craft was 25 when he opened Niche in 2005 – a restaurant chefs and former guests still count among their favorites. Today, Niche Food Group oversees Bowood by Niche, Brasserie, Fordo’s Killer Pizza, and Pastaria, among others. In 2015, Craft became the first St. Louis chef to win the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest.

Recently, Craft hosted a Tuscan dinner series at Bowood, where he was joined by chef Pete Slay, Niche Food Group’s director of culinary operations.

We caught up with Craft to talk pop-ups, chef Loryn Nalic’s James Beard Award win, and why the future feels especially bright.

Do pop-ups give your team a different creative outlet?

It’s good for us to flex our creative muscles and challenge ourselves. That said, pop-ups are not easy because you’re essentially opening a new restaurant with full expectations that you already have it dialed in.

What’s one ingredient you’ve enjoyed working with lately?

We had oxtail on the Tuscan menus – [it was] a reminder of how special that cut of meat is. It’s texturally one of the most luxurious pieces of meat but for a long time was considered a trash cut in mainstream beef. Now, as [many] people are catching on, those prices are getting a little high.

What did Loryn Nalic’s James Beard Award win mean to you?

What inspired the dinner series? Are you planning another one for fall?

I love spending time in Italy when I can, and after a trip to Tuscany, I wanted to explore some ideas. Pete Slay and I thought it would be a good chance to play with recipes we’d been throwing around.

Not sure if [the next one] will be in the fall yet, but we’ve been [thinking about] a destination Brazil series. A throwback to Cinder House, where [Slay] was the chef for a bit. Maybe a hint at things to come.

I have so much respect for chef Loryn and her family, and I was crying when she won. I know how hard she works and was so happy to see her with that James Beard Award. So amazing for her, her family, her teams, and for St. Louis as a whole. Honored to be her friend.

Making the Right Choice for Your Family

any people want to leave more than memories for future generations. RISE IN TICKS CAUSING MEAT ALLERGY

S

t. Louis has many fantastic barbecue restaurants. The city also has a hearty population of lone star ticks, and for people who love the barbecue, these ticks may cause a big problem.

Lone star ticks, which thrive in fields, forests, and even lawns, are active from spring through fall – and their bites can cause a severe allergy to meat, known as alpha-gal syndrome, or AGS. According to the National Institutes of Health, 71% of ticks submitted after being removed from a human host in Missouri were of the lone star variety.

“Alpha-gal syndrome can develop within a few weeks of a tick bite, a few months, or never,” says Dr. Sarah George, a Saint Louis University professor of infectious diseases. “Most people who are bitten by ticks don’t get AGS. The reason it takes several weeks to develop after a bite is because the body takes two to six weeks to make antibodies to the alpha-gal protein in tick saliva.”

People who develop AGS typically notice rashes, hives, nausea, or vomiting several hours after eating red meat or other products from mammals. George says patients who have recurrent symptoms often seek medical evaluation to determine what’s causing the apparent allergy. A blood test can confirm whether a patient has AGS. “Some

people develop higher levels of antibodies and have more extreme reactions or faster reactions than others,” she says. “Why some people develop higher levels of antibodies is not entirely clear, although getting more tick bites does play a role.

[Also,] people with type B blood are less prone to alpha-gal syndrome.”

Patients may recall a tick bite and then connect their symptoms to consuming meat and other products from mammals. Alpha-gal is a molecule found in most mammals, but not in humans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When the lone star tick transmits alphagal to a human, the immune system is activated to treat it as a threat. The immune system then creates antibodies, leaping into action when alpha-gal is later consumed through products from cows, pigs, goats, and sheep.

There’s no treatment for AGS other than avoiding the allergic triggers, though some people find their sensitivity decreases over time. It’s also important to avoid additional tick bites, which can cause people to develop additional antibodies.

“You should avoid tick bites, not just because of alpha-gal syndrome, but because of all the other diseases ticks in Missouri carry including rocky mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, [and] southern tick-associated rash illness,” George says. “Spray insect repellent on your pants and socks, wear long pants, and tuck your pants into your socks when engaging in outdoor activities.”

Jennifer Lynch: I always remind my brides that trends should inspire your bridal look – not define it. The goal is to look back at your wedding photos 20 years from now and still feel like yourself. I start by learning how my brides wear their hair and makeup every day, what features they love, and how they want to feel on their wedding day. From there, we 22

JL: Fall often inspires richer, warmer tones – soft bronzes, warm browns, and muted berries – but the most important thing is choosing colors and hairstyles that complement the bride, her gown, and the overall wedding aesthetic.

210: We’re seeing a beautiful return to soft, romantic luxury. Brides are moving away from overly structured, heavily sprayed styles and choosing hairstyles that feel effortless, modern, and timeless. Soft texture, lived-in movement, and elegant details [define] the season.

What should brides know about working with you?

JL: My team and I provide both hair and makeup services, and we spend months preparing with our brides through personalized timelines, detailed questionnaires, skin care guidance, and in-depth trials. … Communication is key, but … it’s my job to help brides discover what they want before they ever sit in my chair. The goal is to help brides start asking themselves the right questions, so they arrive feeling confident about their vision.

210: We encourage brides to begin planning their beauty journey six to 12 months before the wedding whenever possible. During their consultation, we create a personalized bridal beauty timeline that may include … color, glossing treatments, luxury hair extensions, hair health treatments, precision cuts, and shine-enhancing services. We’re able to make thoughtful, gradual changes that keep the hair healthy while achieving the look they’ve envisioned.

hen self-described “clothes horse” Sierra Stream took over Byrd Designer Consignment, she was new to the resale scene.

Stream, a Springfield, Missouri native, had spent almost a decade in commercial real estate before taking the leap into entrepreneurship. “It was a crazy move when I think back, because prior to becoming the owner, I knew of Byrd but had never consigned or purchased anything from any resale shop – ever,” she says.

Five years into helming Byrd at its home on Ladue Road, Stream says the shop continues to gain steam. “The second-hand market is having a renaissance,” she says. “Every week, we’re getting more first-time customers and consignors.”

The luxury consignment shop accepts many of the same labels found at Neiman Marcus, NET-A-PORTER, Shopbop, or Moda Operandi. “We’re primarily focused on current pieces purchased within the past few years, but we do take some designer vintage as well,” Stream says.

Specializing in women’s designer clothing and accessories – as well as contemporary labels and pieces from global independent designers – the selection showcases both fine and costume clothing, shoes, handbags, accessories, and jewelry.

“If you’ve only shopped with us online or on social media, there is sometimes a misconception that we are accessories-only and everything is pricey, but that’s not true,” Stream says, noting that the in-store inventory includes sizes 0 to 14 and items priced under $100, along with higher-priced pieces.

Among Byrd’s bestselling brands are Chanel, Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Dior, and Saint Laurent as well as labels like Staud, Khaite, and The Row, and activewear brands such as Lululemon, Alo, and Vuori. “We loving helping style looks; … [sometimes,] customers bring in pieces from their closets to try on with possible purchases from the store,” Stream adds.

Byrd’s most coveted pieces may appear on Instagram as well. “We put out new items every day, so there’s always something new to discover,” Stream says. “From basics like a pair of Mother jeans or a Veronica Beard blazer to … vintage Chanel earrings, … we have it all.

Nearly all our consignors are local, and we are fortunate that they bring us the most amazing product.”

Another favorite part of owning Byrd is the variety of customers Stream interacts with at the shop. “Nothing makes me happier than helping people find pieces that bring them joy,” she says.

Selected by museum curator Nezka Pfeifer, the special exhibition – on display now through March 31, 2027, inside the Stephen and Peter Sachs Museum – meets guests at the intersection of culture, genre, and the natural world. Explore comics, poems, novels, botanical specimens, and more to uncover how plants and gardens have inspired generations of storytellers and artists.

Pfeifer’s overarching vision for the exhibition conveys how people of all backgrounds and beliefs incorporate their fascination with plants into the cultural landscape. Beyond art in the galleries, she has organized speakers, workshops, performances, and interactive sessions to engage visitors of all ages more deeply with the Garden and its wonders.

Original poetry pairs with two performances by the Opera Bell Band on Aug. 29. Known for its original, rollicking tunes and vaudevillian comedy, the zany group made its MOBOT debut in August 2024. Now celebrating 10 years together, the band has performed at venues throughout the region and released several albums.

Band members include Shane Devine, Jess Adkins, Jacob Hurst, Grant Martin, and Kristina DeYong. “We’ll have sketches, jokes, and

songs that feature original poems,” DeYong says. “There’s an ode to what might be the most classic flower poem of all time, ‘Roses are Red, Violets are Blue.’ We’re working on a song now about floriography, the language of flowers. On Sept. 19, join a sharing circle showcasing art by St. Louisbased artist Dail Chambers. Surrounded by her work in the gallery, Chambers and her neighbors will host a special community day that examines the plants, foods, herbs, and built environment of their North Side neighborhoods. Voices from across the city are welcome to join the conversation.

On Sept. 24, join Ontario-based artist, perfumer, and educator Rubia Chaudri for an evening of vampire lore and the scents they love and loathe, just in time for spooky season. Preview and purchase Chaudri’s latest vampire-inspired perfume, launching that evening, and come dressed in your best goth or vampire attire.

Plein Air IN THE SPIRIT OF

F

or Peruvian American artist Katherine Martinez, inspiration can be found just beyond her doorstep. Martinez specializes in plein air painting, the act of painting outdoors, to capture the landscape, parks, and natural spaces that make environments unique – drawing from her cultural heritage in the process.

Martinez, originally from Texas, is the daughter of Peruvian parents with Indigenous and Hispanic heritage. Her connection to both her Peruvian roots and the Midwest continues to shape her approach to art.

“My choice in subjects is diverse, including portraiture, landscape, and still life,” Martinez says. “[My work is] influenced by the ever-changing, vibrant nature of my local surroundings here in the United States and the rich culture, fascinating history, and spirited people of Peru. … As such, my paintings shift between loose or impressionistic and lifelike, bright and happy, or tonal and moody.”

Since 2022, plein air painting has played a significant role in her artistic practice. As Martinez spent more time painting outdoors, she began entering plein air competitions. Her first was in University City, where she took first place. This year, she participated in the

Mississippi Riverscapes: Rivers Project Plein Air Competition, painting eight recreation areas along the Mississippi River and receiving multiple awards for her work.

“When I moved to the St. Louis area four years ago, I was in awe of how accessible everything is, especially beautiful nature spaces,” Martinez says. “Whether it’s one of the gorgeous public parks, the zoo, the botanical garden, [or one of] so many other places, I have found so much inspiration in the local environment.”

Painting outdoors also gives Martinez a distinct sense of freedom that’s hard to replicate. “Unlike painting in controlled studio environments, painting outdoors in potentially not-so-ideal conditions tempers my mind and forces me to think critically and quickly,” she says. “It allows me to see more color, builds my visual library, and gives me the privilege of capturing fleeting moments of beauty.”

Those fleeting moments of beauty – something beyond our control – are what Martinez celebrates through her art and hopes to encourage others to experience. The idea isn’t the finished work itself; it’s about the discoveries made along the way.

M

issouri’s first location of multinational bakery brand Paris Baguette debuted this spring in St. Louis. Franchise owner Kenix Fong opened the storefront and café on April 30, bringing an assortment of sweet and savory baked goods, beverages, and more to Olivette.

Founded in South Korea circa 1988 and headquartered in Seoul, Paris Baguette now has more than 3,700 locations in South Korea. According to Fong, the brand’s first United States location debuted in Los Angeles in 2005, with 340 stores now spread across roughly 30 states.

Fong discovered Paris Baguette while visiting Chicago on a family trip. “It has always been one of my dreams to open a coffee shop and bakery,” Fong says. “There’s nothing like this in St. Louis at this scale for people to sit and enjoy, so I wanted to bring the concept here.”

The former stay-at-home mom saw an opportunity to offer something new to her community. “Now that my kids are older and don’t need me as much anymore, I have time,” she says. Her children, ages 19 and 17, and her husband also lend a hand at the shop.

Paris Baguette is known globally for its cakes, pastries, coffees, breads, and other French-inspired bakery café fare. “It’s a fusion of French pastry and Asian pastry,” Fong says. “It’s a mix of the beauty of French pastry but the taste of Asian pastry, which is not too sweet compared with American pastries.”

The approximately 3,200-square-foot space at Olive Crossing features 20 tables inside (and four more on a patio), with a mural of the Arch and Busch Stadium in the

Revival

IN SOUTH CITY

O

n the corner of Gravois and Ohio avenues looms a Gothic Revival landmark worthy of more than a passing glance. This is St. Francis de Sales Oratory, the secondlargest church in the Archdiocese of St. Louis after the Central West End’s green-domed Cathedral Basilica.

Currently, St. Francis is at the center of a $15 million restoration campaign. The effort is well-deserved – not only because of the church’s historic impact and architecture, but also because the neighborhood it calls home, Fox Park, is steadily welcoming in new residents who see it as a place of worship and as a community anchor.

Although the original church from 1867 was destroyed by the Great St. Louis Tornado of 1896 – the third-deadliest tornado in United States history – the parish dates back to 1867. The modernday St. Francis, rebuilt in 1908, is now known as the “Cathedral of South St. Louis” – namely for its “ornate interior, outstanding acoustics, and 300-foot spire that is the tallest in the Midwest,” says Craig Workman, president of Workman Communications Group, the local public relations firm representing the church.

Like numerous St. Louis neighborhoods, Fox Park was settled

by German immigrants who arrived in the 1880s. Many were skilled carpenters and bricklayers whose work has stood the test of time. Italianate row houses, built by these craftsmen, line Russell Boulevard. Classic red brick corner stores have found new uses, and Second Empire and Arts and Crafts homes are awash in fresh coats of paint.

This wasn’t exactly the case near the end of the 20th century, when – according to the church’s website – “shifting demographics and suburbanization in south St. Louis left the church nearly empty, its condition reduced to a shadow of its former grandeur.” St. Francis, now 118 years old, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The Fox Park Historic District, composed of 350 buildings, was added in 1985.

Today, more than $2.6 million in improvements have been made to the church’s HVAC systems through donor support.

Additional funding is needed to “preserve its most defining artistic and architectural features including conservation of the Emil Frei stained glass windows, masonry and structural stabilization, … restoration of historic lighting, flooring, pews, and … painted interiors,” Workman says.

The church’s membership has tripled since 2005 – a sign of its renewed role in the neighborhood. So, if St. Francis and Fox Park mirror St. Louis itself, perhaps more revival is on the way.

he 11th largest aging services provider nonprofit in the country, EverTrue – formerly Lutheran Senior Services – is dedicated to aiding older adults in living their lives to the fullest. The faith-based organization has a 166-year history and annually supports more than 16,500 older adults through life plan communities, affordable housing and at-home care.

I

n June, the Saint Louis Zoo held ZOOFARI, its biggest annual fundraiser, across the sprawling Zoo grounds.

The event is truly a “party with a purpose,” as organizers call it, with funds supporting the Zoo’s conservation efforts, education, animal care, and commitment to remaining affordable for everyone.

Guests arrived in flocks, many dressed in pink to honor this year’s featured animal, the flamingo, while flamingos stood elegantly nearby. Attendees rode the train around the grounds, enjoying drinks and bites from local restaurants like Bogart’s Smokehouse, Clara B’s Kitchen Table, Olive + Oak, and more.

This year’s event raised more than $868,000 and drew more than 2,000 people. Annie Lux and Stephanie Schwendinger served as event co-chairs, with Don and Karen Jubel as honorary co-chairs.

avigating private school admissions can feel like walking a tightrope. In the midst of gathering transcripts, scheduling campus visits, and keeping track of deadlines, parents often find themselves working overtime to prepare their children for the process. One of the more daunting – and ultimately misunderstood – components of this search is the family interview.

Across St. Louis private school campuses, educators agree that these meetings aren't high-stakes interrogations, but rather warm, deeply authentic conversations designed to find the right fit for everyone involved.

Find out what local admissions leaders want parents to expect when sitting down for a school interview.

Getting to know your family “Parents feel a sense of stress going through this process, so my hope is to diffuse it as much as possible,” says Elizabeth Zurlinden, head of school at Rossman School (rossmanschool.org). “I like to refer to it as an informal conversation, because ‘interview’ makes it sound like it’s higher stakes than it is. We simply want to learn from parents what makes their child unique, how they learn best, and what they’re passionate about.”

This focus on the whole child is central to early childhood and elementary programs. At Rohan Woods School (rohanwoods.org), head of school Sam Templin Page emphasizes that by the time families sit down for a meeting, they’ve usually done their research online. The conversation is an opportunity to look beyond traditional transcripts and examine the student from a holistic perspective.

“When admissions or enrollment managers are asking questions, they’re not looking for a particular answer; they’re looking for an authentic and engaging conversation about the child,” Templin Page says. “We’re just trying to get to know the student.”

Questions that dig deeper Private schools familiarize themselves with prospective students through more than evaluations of grades and assessment scores.

The family interview is designed to fill in those gaps and help tell the child’s story. And while every discussion is different, there are some common questions or topics that parents and prospective students can expect to cover in some form or fashion. These include everything from exploring how the child learns best and how they handle challenges to what brings them joy and what they’re passionate about.

“I like to ask kids if they could go anywhere in the world, where would [they] go?” says Tyler Orf, director of enrollment management at Saint Louis Priory School (priory.org). “I’m just curious how they think on their feet.”

At Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School (micds.org), director of enrollment management Brad Large says that some parents are confused when they don’t discuss more traditional topics.

“Parents are sometimes surprised that we ask fewer questions about grades, awards, or test scores than they expect,” he says.

“Instead, we often ask them to tell us about a time their child solved a problem, found something truly exciting, or demonstrated kindness or resilience. These conversations often reveal far more than a list of accomplishments.”

This dynamic reflects a broader trend in higher education, where college admissions advisors increasingly evaluate applicants beyond

their GPA and ACT or SAT scores. It’s easy to see when a child gets good grades, but the real challenge is showcasing everything that makes each child entirely themself.

The child’s involvement The family interview looks different as children advance in their education. For toddlers and young elementary students, parents carry the weight of the conversation during these family interviews (though there are still plenty of instances where the children are encouraged to share their thoughts and engage with the interviewer). For older students applying to middle and high school, the spotlight shifts toward the applicant.

At St. Louis U. High (sluh.org), director of admissions Ann Murphy encourages parents to step back and let their sons take the lead during the conversation.

“My biggest piece of advice is simple: Don’t over prepare,” she says. “We aren’t looking for rehearsed answers. We simply want students to be themselves. One of my favorite parts of every interview is sharing with parents what their sons have said. Parents are often surprised by the thoughtfulness and maturity their sons demonstrate when given the opportunity to answer on their own.”

Parting advice Parents understandably spend significant time and energy trying to determine if a school is the right fit for their child; in many ways, this decision impacts the rest of their life. Yet time and again, admissions faculty say that families should also ask an equally vital question: Is this school well suited to us?

“A lot of parents go into this process looking for a fit for their child, but they should be looking to see if it’s a good fit for them, too,” Zurlinden says. “It needs to be a place for them to have friendships, encouraging them and walking through this season in life with them. Our parents become family for each other.”

Ultimately, local admissions teams view the interview not as a barrier to entry but as the initial groundwork for a meaningful relationship. When families drop the scripted answers, embrace their child's genuine self, and approach the meeting as a mutual discovery process, the admissions conversation becomes less about making a sale or acing an interview and more about finding a home.

Mitigating Risks of

Moderate Drinking

How many drinks are too many? We dive deeper into the research.

he advice on alcohol has shifted in the past few years, and data continues to indicate that any amount of drinking comes with risk. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that “compared to not drinking, drinking alcohol in moderation may increase your overall risks of death and chronic disease. This includes conditions like cancer and heart disease.” Yet, about half of American adults report that they continue to consume alcohol, and many people are confused about how to calculate risks and make smart decisions when it comes to alcohol consumption.

Risk is a factor in daily life. Adults face risks related to driving, eating foods known to contribute to disease, smoking, and sun exposure, among other things.

Complicating matters even more is the somewhat nebulous definition of “moderate drinking.” “There is no standard definition of moderate alcohol intake, even among nutrition scientists – this is one of the major limitations in the research on alcohol and health,” says Whitney Linsenmeyer, associate professor of nutrition and dietetics at Saint Louis University and a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

“Older versions of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans defined moderate alcohol consumption as up to one drink per day for females and up to two drinks per day for males, [the definition still used by the CDC],” she says. “This difference was based on the

rate of alcohol metabolism in females and males. However, the current 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans no longer quantify moderate drinking. Instead, the guidelines simply encourage Americans to ‘consume less alcohol for better overall health.’”

Scientists do know that the ethanol in alcoholic beverages metabolizes into a compound called acetaldehyde, which is classed as a group 1 carcinogen. Not only does acetaldehyde cause the uncomfortable symptoms we know as a hangover, but it also more insidiously travels throughout the body, creating DNA damage and oxidative stress on cells, which can drive cancers and other disease processes.

It can be difficult for scientists to pinpoint how specific quantities of alcohol affect health, considering that most study subjects have genetic and other behavioral factors contributing to their overall health and disease risk.

Linsenmeyer points to a report published last year by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine that reviewed previous studies.

“They reported fairly mixed findings,” she says. Moderate alcohol intake increased the risk of certain diseases (e.g. breast and colorectal cancer), decreased the risk of other diseases (e.g. cardiovascular disease), and had no effect on others (e.g. dementia).

“In terms of how we make sense of and apply these findings to our daily lives, the answer may be fairly individualized,” she says. “For example, for someone with a history or high risk of breast cancer, the best option for their health may be to highly limit or avoid alcohol altogether. Someone with very low cancer risk, based on their family history, diet, and lifestyle, may be comfortable with moderate intake.”

For those who decide to imbibe, the type of alcohol doesn’t seem to matter much in terms of health effects. While red wine once was touted as beneficial due to the plant antioxidant resveratrol, which comes from grape skins, experts now recommend consuming antioxidants from whole-food sources, like the grapes themselves, and

avoiding the potential negative effects of alcohol.

Catering to the increasingly popular alcohol-free consumer, many bars and restaurants have robust nonalcoholic cocktail menus featuring fancy drinks made from juices, syrups, tinctures, and sodas. “Mocktails may be alcohol-free, but depending on how they're made, they may contain high amounts of added sugar or caffeine,” Linsenmeyer notes. “Any recipes that use sodas or simple syrup will contribute to your added sugar intake. Aim to choose mocktails that use lower-calorie ingredients such as sparkling waters, fresh fruit, vinegars, or herbs.”

“When it comes to alcohol, the conversation seems to be focused on an ‘all or nothing’ mentality, with an entire focus on health and no consideration for enjoyment and pleasure,” says Whitney Linsenmeyer, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Other popular options are cannabis- or THC-infused beverages, which lack the acetaldehyde that results from alcohol.

However, THC impairs judgment and coordination, making it an unwise choice when driving, and very little research exists on the long-term effects of cannabinoid beverages. Consumers should also be aware of how many milligrams of THC are in a beverage, since doses vary widely between products, and realize that these beverages may contain added sugar or other ingredients.

“There are plenty of dietary factors where we make a case for moderation such as with added sugars. Yet, when it comes to alcohol, the conversation seems to be focused on an ‘all or nothing’ mentality, with an entire focus on health and no consideration for enjoyment and pleasure,” Linsenmeyer says.

“For the [person] who loves a glass of wine or a St. Louis microbrew, I recommend focusing on moderation, not abstinence. You can enjoy a drink as part of an overall healthy diet and lifestyle.”

Daily ticketed special events include pub or cocktail crawls across the grounds, a fairy-tale tea party in an edible garden, or a morning hawk walk with a master falconer. GREAT FOREST PARK BALLOON RACE Sept. 18 to 19 | greatforestparkballoonrace.com It began with a handful of hot-air balloons reaching great heights and sparse spectators on the ground. Now, more than 50 years later, nearly 150,000 people come to the massive spectacle in the city’s most cherished green space. The Great Forest Park Balloon Race is a free two-day affair welcoming more than 50 of the nation’s top balloon pilots as well as thousands ready to watch them take to the skies over Emerson Central Fields. The weekend commences on Friday with the Balloon Glow, an ethereal experience in which spectators can see the giant aircraft grounded and glowing, walk among them, and talk with the pilots. At 9 p.m., the U.S. Army Golden Knights skydiving team puts on a show for the crowd, followed by a fireworks finale. On Saturday, after opening ceremonies – and the chance to fill up at food trucks, explore inflatable games, and enjoy main-stage entertainment – it’s off to the races around 4:30 p.m., as the sounds of the WashU Chamber Choir send the balloons on their way high above Forest Park.
