Although I can’t deny it’s partially because of the feast that accompanies the day, my love for the celebration runs deeper than what’s served for dinner. I love Thanksgiving because of the atmosphere it creates: It’s a time to be surrounded by the ones you love, in a warm home decked out with autumnal décor, all while enjoying a beautiful meal. It’s a time to reflect on the beauty in your life and to truly relish the blessings you have received – no matter how big or small.

For the host, though, Thanksgiving can be a tad stressful – not only do you have to cook a luxurious meal, but also your table and décor will act as the runway for the big event. The Missouri Historical Society recently announced grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which will provide funding to inventory, catalog, repair and rehouse the Epsilon-Dalzell Premier Collection, which contains approximately 2,345 cans of films. According to a press release, “This prolific collection with its broad range of industrial films and advertising from several different regional corporations provides a great historical resource for understanding the St. Louis community’s changing ideals and values through the unique lens of the advertising industry.”

Congratulations to Dominic Schneider of Francis Howell North High School for being named to the 2018 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. According to a press release, “The U.S. Army All-American Marching Band recognizes the top 125 high school senior marching musicians and color guard members from across the country. The All-American Bowl consistently draws an annual crowd upwards of 40,000 to the Alamodome and is the most-watched high school sporting event of each year, with 5.1 million viewers tuning into last year’s broadcast.”

he Leukemia & Lymphoma Society came together on Forest Park’s Cricket Field on Sept. 23 for its 19th annual Light the Night Walk. Thousands of families, friends and survivors sought to raise awareness of leukemia and lymphoma, as well as to fight for finding a cure for those ailments by raising funds to ensure patients have access to lifesaving treatments. The society has been instrumental in the governmental approval of five separate leukemia drug treatments since this April alone.

n the riverboat deck of the Missouri River at the Mesker estate, guests recently attended the 12th annual Awards Celebration for the Great Rivers Environmental Law Center. The evening event supported efforts to protect our natural resources, while allowing guests to enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, ragtime music and a silent auction. The Lewis C. Green Environmental Service Award went to Robert E. Criss, professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, for his long-term commitment to raising awareness of increased flooding risks, as well as the dangers of flood plain development and inaccurate flood studies.

We enforce the environmental laws when government refuses to do so. We provide free and reduced-fee legal services to individuals, citizens’ groups and organizations seeking to preserve and protect the environment and public health.

he St. Louis Learning Disabilities Association held its 20th annual Unlock the Magic of Learning event on Sept. 30 at Grant’s Farm with honorary chairs Billy and Christi Busch, sponsored by Centene Charitable Foundation and Home State Health. Sherry Farmer and Margie Ellisor of FOX 2 News emceed the family-friendly event, which included a buffet dinner, silent and live auctions, children’s activities and live performances by The Muny Kids and Smash Band. Proceeds from the event help local children who have learning disabilities reach their full potential. Last year, the association aided more than 5,100 children, parents and educators in the greater St. Louis area.

Students of all ages, parents and professionals receive education, support and consultation to help with learning differences, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia and autism spectrum disorder in order to provide strategies for a path to success.

St. Louis LDA is an awesome organization to work with because it gives kids with learning differences confidence in knowing they can learn and excel despite their differences.

Local designers share tips for making memorable holiday tablescapes.

TradiTionaL: Edwin PEPPEr inTEriors Family heirlooms in a fall harvestlike setting make for a meaningful, beautiful Thanksgiving tablescape, Pepper Jacoby says.

Amid a cream, gold and white color scheme with splashes of blue, burgundy and marigold, this table setting is layered with cherished memorabilia, from heirloom fine china and candlesticks to framed family photos. “Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the things you’re thankful for,” Pepper Jacoby says. “To keep it personal, in front of each plate is a message about something you’re thankful for this year, such as family, faith and health.”

Schulman says it’s important to display varying heights on your holiday table, from tall flowers to tapered candles and layers of fabrics. One-footsquare Calcutta marble pieces were used in lieu of placemats, with dishware at each place setting.

Custom napkins and ring holders as well as the fabrics used were fabricated in Edwin Pepper Interiors’ in-house workroom.

To set the holiday mood, Pepper Jacoby also advises adding accents that appeal to all of the senses and bring in the feel of the season, from adding fresh greenery and grapes in floral arrangements, to using leaves for nameplates and candles for a seasonal scent and intimate lighting.

A Thanksgiving table is more than a dining setting; it has sentiment to it, Pepper Jacoby says. “You want there to be really personal touches, such as family photos and a blending of family heirlooms from those who are not there and those who are,” she continues.

“No two settings are alike, and we use some very valuable items along with items like leaves from our own yard for the nameplates. And we always incorporate peppers in our family tablescapes because of our last name. And even though it was my home, Tricia brought a lot to the table, as we would for any client – it was a true collaboration.”

LN recently spoke with designers Karen Pepper Jacoby and Tricia Schulman, from revered family-owned Edwin Pepper Interiors design firm in Olivette; Patti Porter, of charming and sophisticated home décor shop Rusted Chandelier in Kirkwood; and Diane Fogerty, from stylish, upscale residential and commercial design firm Savvy Surrounding Style in Ladue.

Edwin Pepper Interiors’ traditional-themed tablescape reflects on family memories amid a fall harvest-inspired setting; Rusted Chandelier’s rustic table is straight out of a woodsy wonderland; and Savvy Surrounding Style’s modern, metallic tablescape is polished to perfection and features an extra helping of glam. Fogerty says the modern glam aesthetic is timeless.

“Glam style requires dimmed lighting with reflective surfaces,” she explains. “The shimmer of the gold accents and white blown-glass pumpkins will reflect candlelight and create a beautiful ambiance.”

Gold and white form a simple yet elegant color palette, Fogerty notes. “It creates a polished and refined table with a fashionable and modern feel,” she says. “The simplicity of the copper plates and cutlery add another metallic element, but do not distract from the centerpiece.”

Florals don’t have to be the central focus of the table, Fogerty explains. “I included florals in the room setting,” she says. “In doing this, you can set your table days in advance of [the] Thanksgiving meal.”

Layering different textures is also important, Fogerty says. “Luxurious fabrics heighten the look, with creamy white velvet pumpkins and crisp white linen napkins edged in gold beads,” she explains.

For Thanksgiving, Fogerty recommends using pieces that transition from fall into the Christmas holidays. “Gold is a great transitional color,” she notes. “And the velvet and glass pumpkins are great fall staples that can be easily incorporated into the Thanksgiving table.”

rusTic: rusTEd chandELiEr With wooden accents, fall hues and dried foliage, this outdoorsy Thanksgiving tablescape takes inspiration from nature, Porter says.

Atop a 12-foot-long farm table, each setting is layered with a large wooden cutting board and leopard-print fabric to serve as the placemat, with a khaki-colored, black-trimmed charger and a blue-andwhite plate, as well as adjacent pewter goblets, linen napkins and glass votives topped with pumpkins. The centerpiece boasts silk and dried foliage and seasonal florals, from pine branches and cones to bittersweet, all arranged in a wooden container.

Porter says the eclectic textures and patterns, along with seasonal foliage, give the table a rustic touch. “What I love to do this time of year is bring the outside in,” Porter says of the rich fall foliage color palette.

To achieve this type of rustic-inspired tablescape, it’s important to have a beautiful focal point and then surround it with layers of natural elements in the colors of the season, along with your fine china, Porter notes. “You’re bringing in the outdoors, and dressing it up with your china,” she says.

S

oup is a pure comfort food, especially when it’s made with nutrient-dense ingredients. This roasted broccoli and fennel number boasts major antioxidants and phytonutrients, which give your immune system a boost – exactly what you need when temperatures dip in fall and winter.

In addition to all the great things this bowl of comfort can do for your body, it’s also quick and easy to put together and is packed with hearty and herbal flavor.

Although this take on dukkah (a condiment spelled several other ways) is far from traditional, it does technically meet the definition. Native to Egypt and popular throughout the Middle East, dukkah is a dip made with herbs, nuts and spices.

Dukkah varies by country and region, but it’s often made with hazelnuts, pistachios, sesame seeds and spices such as coriander and cumin seeds, salt and pepper, and fresh or dried thyme and mint. This version uses celery leaves in place of the herbs and raw sunflower seeds in place of nuts.

ROASTED BROCCOLI AND FENNEL SOUP WITH CELERY DUKKAH Sometimes fennel can be hard to source, so you can substitute equal parts celery instead. Raw pumpkin seeds can be used in place of sunflower seeds for the dukkah, which will result in a nuttier, heartier crunch.

Roasted Broccoli and Fennel Soup

Serves | 4 to 6 |

 4 cups broccoli florets

Celery Dukkah

READY IN 5

 2 cups fennel, chopped into wedges

 ½ cup raw sunflower seeds

 2 Tbsp olive oil, divided

 ¼ cup celery leaves, minced

 5 cloves garlic, minced

 ¼ tsp sea salt

 ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper

 1 medium onion, chopped  2 cups curly kale, ribs removed  ½ cup raw cashews  3 cups filtered water or vegetable stock  2 Tbsp lemon juice  sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

| Preparation – Celery Dukkah | In the bowl of a food processor, pulse sunflower seeds until roughly chopped. In a sauté pan over medium heat, toast roughly chopped seeds until browned. Add celery leaves, salt and pepper, and stir. Sauté for 1 minute more. Set aside until completely cool. | Preparation – Roasted Broccoli and Fennel Soup | Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Spread broccoli and fennel evenly on prepared baking sheet, drizzle with 1 tablespoon olive oil and roast for 20 minutes, flipping broccoli and fennel after 10 minutes.

In a large saucepot over medium-low heat, add minced garlic and sweat for 3 minutes. Add onion and sweat for 5 minutes more. When broccoli and fennel are done roasting, add them to the saucepot with garlic and onion. Then add kale, cashews, water or stock, and lemon juice, and generously season with salt and pepper. Simmer mixture for 5 minutes, and remove from heat. In bowl of a blender, add vegetables and pan juice, and blend until smooth. Garnish soup with celery dukkah and serve.

Deacon, Enid AND THE STILLMAN FAMILY

‌ONCE UPON A TIME, THE STILLMAN house was full. Neighbors fondly referred to the Stillmans’ household as a petting zoo because they always seemed to house unwanted animals. Among the animals, the Stillmans had an elderly cat and were looking to adopt a second “when the time was right.”

Julianne Stillman’s 14-year-old daughter searched the internet for kittens that needed a forever home and stumbled across a picture of Enid, a kitten who was missing radial bones in her forelegs from a genetic condition. After the girl showed her mom, the Stillmans got in touch with St. Louis Pet Rescue to see about visiting the kitten.

“We met Enid and found out she has siblings,” Stillman says. “She and her brother Deacon came as a pair, and both had the genetic leg condition.”

The Stillmans fell in love with the kittens and made the decision to adopt them on the spot.

“We knew we could give them a loving home and work with their special needs,” Stillman says. “We were a bit nervous when we brought them home, though, because we weren’t sure they’d be able to do stairs.”

The Stillmans learned very quickly that since the kittens had been born with the condition, they didn’t know any different. Enid and Deacon army-crawl everywhere and sit up on their hind legs like kangaroos.

“They’re totally mobile and can jump and run like crazy,” Stillman says.

Deacon and Enid fit in perfectly with the other Stillman household animals. They’re close with the older cat, especially Enid. They also love the family guinea pig, who will chase the kittens around.

“They all run around the living room together, and the guinea pig will try to chew on [the kittens’] fur,” Stillman says. “They’re all about the same size, so it’s pretty funny to watch.”

Deacon and Enid are inseparable, but each has individual quirks. Enid is obsessed with the shower and will wait nearby until someone gets out to invade it; she’s also notorious for unrolling rolls of toilet paper.

“We’d wake up in the morning, and it will be all unrolled, shredded and everywhere,” Stillman says.

Deacon’s the more vocal of the two and will “walk around yowling.”

Although the two kitties weren’t initially part of the Stillman animal plan, Stillman says the pair came into the family’s lives when they were most needed.

“We’ve had a hard year, so I feel like they were sent to us,” she says. “They make us laugh every day.”

The world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research is hosting its St. Louis walk just over a week from now.

I

n 1989, nine Alzheimer’s Association chapters across the country decided to raise money with a Memory Walk. That year, 1,249 participants walked and collected almost $150,000 in sponsorship donations. After that first success, more chapters organized walks the next year. No one knew, however, that the first Memory Walk would morph into the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

In 2016, more than 56,000 teams participated in more than 620 walks across the country, raising more than $82 million, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. This year, the 28th annual St. Louis Walk to End Alzheimer’s, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Nov. 18 at the Scottrade Center, has already surpassed its $1 million fundraising goal, and more than 4,000 walkers are expected.

“We have some fun and unique entertainment planned for the day, with hopes that families can make some meaningful memories that can be enjoyed for years to come,” says Kathleen Davis, walk manager for the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Missouri Chapter. Spencer Graves, host of Spencer’s Neighborhood on radio station 106.5 The Arch, will emcee with music provided by The Arch Music Van. As walkers make their way to the starting line, they can also enjoy a photo booth in Clydesdale Corner, a demo by St. Louis Gatekeepers Roller Derby, a visit with the St. Louis Cardinals’ Fredbird and free coffee provided by national presenting sponsor Edward Jones.

Davis notes that participants of all ages are welcome, and there’s still time to register to walk or volunteer online by going to act.alz.org and clicking “Find a Walk near you.”

Walkers also can register on-site beginning at noon the day of the walk. “Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s participants will learn more about Alzheimer’s disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical studies enrollment, and support programs and services,” she adds.

Sixty percent of all non-donor-restricted funds stay with the Greater Missouri Chapter, supporting the mission of the organization, Davis says, adding: “The Alzheimer’s Association funds research across the globe. We’re fortunate to have Washington University and Saint Louis University, which receive research funding from the Alzheimer’s Association.”

The walk, which began in St. Louis in 1989, occurs during National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, and Davis emphasizes that the local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is here to help those living with the disease and their caregivers. “We want people to know that you’re not alone facing Alzheimer’s,” she says. The most utilized service provided is the 24-hour help line at 800-272-3900. Callers receive free, private support and information, referrals for caregivers and

guidance related to a host of questions.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, yet there is still no definitive test to diagnose the disease. Physicians consider family history and cognitive test results, and perform other clinical tests, such as blood tests and brain imaging, in order to make a diagnosis. In addition to age and family history, people who carry the APOE e4 gene are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

While age, family history and genetics cannot be changed, some risk factors can be controlled. In general, behaviors that benefit cardiovascular health also appear to benefit brain health, according to researchers. A healthy diet rich in whole foods, regular exercise and lifelong learning strategies have been shown to reduce dementia risk.

However, for those who do develop Alzheimer’s disease, and for their families and loved ones, Davis notes that the Alzheimer’s Association provides a care consultation with an experienced social worker to create short- and long-term care strategies.

“Entire families join together with the person with dementia to create a plan that will offer support and address pertinent concerns about legal, financial and care issues,” she says. To schedule a one-hour session, call the organization’s help line.

Educational programs, support groups and programs for people who are in the early stages of the disease are also in high demand through the Alzheimer’s Association. “Once a family has a diagnosis, learning more about the disease through ‘Living With Alzheimer’s’ or ‘The Basics of Alzheimer’s Disease’ classes can help them prepare for changes and know what to expect,” Davis says. “Monthly support groups – in person, virtual or by phone – provide ongoing counseling, support and assistance to guide the family through the journey.”

Building on that level of trust, Parc Provence offers a diverse schedule that includes cognitive, spiritual and sensory stimuli, from our golf and basketball to aromatherapy and massage therapy. “Our daily activities are interspersed and engaging, with the goal to keep residents happy,” Aragon shares. “Parc Provence offers a variety of activities based on interests and cognitive levels that are lead throughout the community simultaneously. It’s important for adults with memory issues to stay active and keep their minds busy, so they can retain their abilities and minds for as long as possible, which gives them purpose and improves quality of life.”

Residents have a particular interest in the music-based activities, no matter the stage of dementia, as well as social gatherings such as happy hours that often include ice cream.

The sensory-based activities can activate and trigger memories.

“The reactions you can get from different smells and touches may be something you haven’t seen in a long time – and that makes it all worthwhile,” Aragon describes.

“Being at different levels of dementia, everything a resident participates in is important. Brushing your teeth, styling your hair, folding laundry … It all gives purpose, and residents take pride in it. It’s comforting to know they are enjoying life and that we’re providing that quality of life.”

Many components of life make it feel more complete, and memory is only one part of that. Parc Provence goes beyond to help residents capture happiness through every aspect of life. “We look at residents as a whole – cognitively, functionally, socially and physically,” Aragon says. “No two residents seem to have the same dementia or cognitive level, and for us, it’s about meeting the needs of where each is at. That can vary from hour to hour and day to day. However, seeing the joy they have when they rediscover a memory makes all the difference.”

Having always worked in nonprofits, Jessica Dederer says her whole career has been in a place she loves.

Currently, that place is as chief development officer of FamilyForward, an organization committed to helping vulnerable children and their families build safer, healthier relationships by offering comprehensive therapeutic and educational services. Outside of work, Dederer volunteers at her children’s schools, serves on the parish council and development committee of her church, volunteers with local charities, and serves as a mentor through the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network – St. Louis.

Dederer describes herself as a “real” person who always looks for ways to balance work, health and family. One thing she insists on is family dinners together, even if it means not eating until 8 p.m., when all the family’s activities have ended. She also strives to model healthy living at home and at work.

Dr. Kelley Humphries’ passion for health, human performance and service is evident in all that she does.

As a former college athlete, health and wellness always have been a priority in her own life. Professionally, she segued that passion into her career as a chiropractor, serving as assistant director of the Human Performance Center at Logan University. She also leads the university’s integrative clinic at Paraquad, promoting health and wellness for individuals with disabilities.

In the community, Humphries has served as a strength and conditioning coach for Harris-Stowe State University’s women’s basketball team; on the board of Young Variety of St. Louis; as executive council member for Young Ambassadors – Wings of Hope; on the medical staff for The World Games 2017, Wroclaw in Poland and the 2017 American Open Finals in weightlifting; and as a high performance administrator for Para Powerlifting – Team USA. She also helped found the Women’s Leadership Council at Logan University, which aims to educate, inspire, empower and guide women personally and professionally.

Making a commitment to prioritize her health, Kelsey Koenig lost weight by challenging herself to consistent exercise and healthy meal planning.

Motivated by her own lifestyle changes and guided by a passion to ensure that all people have the resources to be successful in creating a healthier lifestyle, Koenig has volunteered for the past two years with The Fit and Food Connection (FAFC), a nonprofit organization that strives to provide healthy living resources through nutrition and physical fitness to families in need in north St. Louis city and north St. Louis County. She currently leads the organization’s marketing, social media and website committees, helping FAFC’s services reach as many families as possible. She also recently started teaching free yoga classes at FAFC. Koenig inspires others to make the best of their current circumstances with the motto “do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”

Nancy Lieberman first took up running to help manage stress and migraines. She went on to run her first marathon at age 47. “I realized through exercise how much better I felt and the camaraderie it builds,” Lieberman says. Since then, she has completed 12 marathons and dozens of triathlons, as well as five IRONMAN 140.6 and 28 IRONMAN 70.3 races, including five IRONMAN World Championship events.

Helping other people get active became a mission for Lieberman and led her 18 years ago to found GO! St. Louis, a nonprofit that encourages individuals and families in the St. Louis region to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle year-round through fun fitness events, school-based programming and community collaborations. Since retiring as founder and president of GO! St. Louis, Lieberman has remained active in the community and beyond, chairing the St. Louis Senior Olympics, serving on the St. Louis Civic Pride foundation, volunteering with the Wyman Center and serving as a camp counselor in South Africa for children of families impacted by HIV and AIDS.

new counter-service-style restaurant in University City specializes in tacos – albeit with a variety of worldly influences.

Taco Buddha, which debuted in August, features both traditional and inventive tacos inspired by Southwestern and Mexican cuisine as well as the Caribbean, Asia and beyond. The casual eatery comes from owner Kurt Eller and his partner, Erin McCracken. Chef Ben McArthur, formerly of the defunct J McArthur’s in St. Louis’ Lindenwood Park neighborhood, serves as a chef consultant, assisting with the restaurant’s development.

Eller spent much of his hospitality career in Austin, Texas, where he owned and operated several restaurants. Throughout the ’90s, he also traveled to such cities as Miami, Atlanta and San Antonio to manage various businesses ranging from taco joints to high-end fusion eateries.

A shift to a corporate job then led him to St. Louis, but three years ago, he started his own catering company under the Taco Buddha moniker, with an accompanying food trailer to assist in mobile food preparation for wedding receptions and other events.

“When I came up with the name, I was thinking about something that opened up tacos to be inclusive to everything and accepting of every type of food,” Eller says. “We’re just offering honest, simple ingredients that we layer to create different flavors – humble street food.”

Taco Buddha fills a 435-square-foot space that previously served as the back of PerJax Americana Kitchen. McCracken designed the space, which features what Eller describes as a French Cambodian or international-style feel, reminiscent of a Brooklyn café. Staghorn ferns mounted on acoustic boards adorn the walls next to a handwritten menu, and the dining area is filled with tables built by Eller himself from

The kitchen’s ever-expanding recipe portfolio currently contains approximately 18 different tacos, with five to six options available on any given day. “Our menu is always changing as we source fresh ingredients and try out new flavors each day!” states Tacho Buddha’s website listing, which is updated regularly to reflect what’s currently on offer.

One of the most popular menu items has been a tandoori-style chicken taco with grilled, masalamarinated chicken, cabbage slaw, cotija cheese, cilantro, mango chutney and red-chili cream.

“One of my favorites is the smoked brisket,” McArthur says. “Kurt is from Texas, so he does the Texas-style smoke with mesquite wood for that desert taste. It’s smoked 16-plus hours until it’s just right. We also incorporate a lot of New Mexico chilies.”

Depending on weekly menu changes, guests also could find such items as a blackened-salmon taco with New Mexico red chilies and Cajun spices, grilled corn relish, cotija cheese, cabbage slaw and cilantro. Appetizers generally include chips and salsa, guacamole, queso blanco, green-chili queso and ceviche. Quesadillas also may be available, depending on the week’s menu.

Sides customarily include rice and/or beans, street corn-on-the-cob and a fried half avocado. For dessert, weekly menu options could include flan, tres leches cake and Texas pralines – all of which sound like delectable delights before catching Heisenberg from The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis.

From the full bar, the beverage list includes specialty cocktails, margaritas, eight canned and bottled beers, and a wine selection that boasts a partnership with Spain’s Torres Vineyards.

‌Story: What are the odds that Georgie Burns would kiss Alex Priest, a complete stranger, on the back of the neck at a London train station? When she does exactly that one day, it begins a most unlikely relationship.

Georgie is 42 years old, impulsive, open to adventure and not above stretching the truth to create her own fantasy existence. In contrast, the 75-year-old Alex has been a creature of habit throughout his life. As they converse following their abrupt introduction, Alex reveals that he’s never even journeyed outside of London.

He likes to walk, he says, virtually every day. He finds a place to sit and just relax, observing the world around him. Georgie marvels that this homespun philosopher is a butcher by trade and that he still keeps long hours at his shop.

Following their first and rather fitful encounter, Georgie looks up Alex at his butcher shop. With a little coaxing of the annoyed Alex, she keeps the conversation and relationship rolling. She learns about Alex’s eclectic tastes in music, as well as his penchant for dancing and crying for no apparent reason. Eventually, she speaks about the real painful truths in her own life and bares her vulnerability to this once and future friend.

Theirs is a relationship which moves unexpectedly from a most unusual starting point. They seem to be a living embodiment of the “uncertainty principle” espoused by 20th-century theoretical physicist Werner Heisenberg. Essentially, Heisenberg stated that “the more precisely the position of some particle is determined, the less precisely its momentum can be known, and vice versa.”

Now that Georgie and Alex have met, they may have a future of limitless possibilities, if time will only cooperate.

Highlights: Just as it opened its 2017-18 Mainstage season with The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis unveils its current Emerson Studio Theatre year with an intriguing work by playwright Simon Stephens. Heisenberg features a superb script, unexpected twists and surprising charm, all captured impeccably by its two performers, Joneal Joplin and Susan Louise O’Connor, under Steven Woolf’s carefully calibrated direction.

Other Info: Heisenberg won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1932 for his work with quantum mechanics.

Stephens extrapolates that physical theory into the human realm by focusing on the what-ifs that culminate in a relationship between two individuals.

While thousands of people wend their way through London’s metro transit system daily, Stephens establishes that in a particular place, at a specific time, Georgie and Alex will meet and form a relationship in which they’ll express the depths of their respective souls to someone who didn’t exist in their lives moments earlier.

passage quoted by Woolf in his program notes: “You can hear it. That’s not listening to it … You need to follow it … Try to predict what will happen next …

That’s the secret that nobody knows about music.

Music doesn’t exist in the notes. It exists in the space between the notes.”

Stephens gives Alex the lean, meaty parts of his dialogue – brief, succinct answers that get to the point and answer Georgie’s pointed questions quickly and directly. He fills Georgie’s words with feeling and vibrancy, offering an appealing contrast to Alex’s introspection. Clearly, here opposites do attract.

Woolf coaxes natural, buoyant performances from each of his players in this one-act adventure. Joplin appears with The Rep for the 101st time in his stellar career, although this marks his return to the Emerson for the first time only since 1996. O’Connor previously performed with The Rep in God of Carnage in 2011.

The two savvy performers know how to both act and react with aplomb, making their mutual appearance akin to the tango they dance late in the show. It’s richly satisfying watching Joplin invest each of Alex’s well-chosen words with truth and simplicity at their most specific level. It’s equally enriching to observe O’Connor demonstrate the exhilaration of Georgie as well as the lingering tragedy that’s never far from the troubled school receptionist.

The Rep could probably stage an entire season of Stephens’ works and enrich its audiences with each presentation. As it is, savor the opportunity to check out Heisenberg. There’s no uncertainty as to its nod to the often unexpected joys of life.

Howard’s story touches on the insecurities we all feel, and his emotive illustrations clearly suggest the dogs’ personalities. The subdued background colors allow the characters to stand out, connecting the reader with the creatures’ distinct qualities, movements, and moods.

n a tour de force exhibition, the St. Louis Mercantile Library is now recounting a story of manifold stories – not dozens of them, not hundreds, not even thousands, but thousands of thousands.

That free exhibition, titled “Headlines of History,” opened slightly more than a month ago, on Oct. 8. It sprawls through much of that underappreciated local treasure’s lower level in the University of Missouri-St. Louis’ Thomas Jefferson Library and runs till Sept. 3, 2019.

To anyone but so-called digital natives, the exhibition should constitute an Enola Gay-level blast from the past, one that John N. Hoover, the Mercantile’s executive director, conceived, astonishingly, almost three decades ago, notes a press release from the library.

It leverages the Mercantile’s vast holdings – which include both the archives and printing morgue of the now-defunct St. Louis Globe-Democrat and a complete run of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch – to illustrate how much newspapering has changed here since the 1808 launch of the Missouri Gazette, probably the proto-state’s first paper,

and even since editors might plug stray complainants.

(Seriously. “John A. Cockerill, the Post-Dispatch’s managing editor, was confronted by an enraged – and armed – Alonzo Slayback, the law partner of a St. Louis politician who had been the target of a series of Cockerill’s scathing editorials,” Lee Ann Sandweiss relates, in her 2000 Seeking St. Louis, of an 1882 incident. “Slayback barged into Cockerill’s office and was shot and killed by the editor.” Nowadays journalists exercise greater patience with irate readers.)

The Mercantile exhibition includes at least one amusing juxtaposition. “Truman Takes Over Burdens of State,” declares The Sun, from New York, in its edition of April 12, 1945, the day Missouri’s Harry S. Truman, then the U.S. vice president, assumed the presidency following the death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. All of 4 feet to the left of it, the Post-Dispatch for Aug. 9, 1974, proclaims, “President Nixon Resigns, Gerald Ford Takes Over,” because of the Watergate scandal.

Had he lived another two years, the 33rd president might have guffawed over the travails of the 37th because Truman long considered Richard M. Nixon a skunk of

the first stripe. (In Plain Speaking, Merle Miller’s extraordinary 1973 “oral biography” of Missouri’s most prominent 20th-century statesman, Give ’Em Hell Harry remarks of Tricky Dick, “He not only doesn’t give a damn about the people; he doesn’t know how to tell the truth.”)

Elsewhere on the walls of the William Maffitt Bates Jr. Gallery within the Mercantile, the exhibition less amusingly juxtaposes a Nov. 11, 1918, Globe-Democrat headline, “Germany Has Surrendered/War Ends Officially at 5 a.m. Today,” regarding World War I, and a Dec. 11, 1941, Post-Dispatch headline, “U.S. Declares War on Berlin, Rome,” regarding World War II. Alongside smaller cases and miscellaneous tables, the exhibition also devotes a quartet of 8-foot-long glass cases, gloriously, to the funnies – the street-smart artistry of the comic strip. Those cases’ full-color contents long predate the current era of Scott Adams’ Dilbert, which, its satiric graces notwithstanding, could have been visualized four decades ago by a middle schooler “outputting” to a mimeograph. The contents of those cases include a full-page 1941 example from the Post-Dispatch of Prince Valiant, Harold R. Foster’s lush Arthurian saga, long regarded as one of the finest strips ever created.

The walls of the Bates gallery likewise sport a selection of political cartoons, a miniature tribute to the grease pencil, the dip pen and the brush. Among those cartoons appears one that remains a heartbreaker more than half a century after its Nov. 23, 1963, publication in the Chicago Sun-Times: Bill Mauldin’s wordless shot of the marble statue of Honest Abe at Washington, D.C.’s Lincoln Memorial hunched forward, weeping at word of the assassination of thenPresident John F. Kennedy.

In the final analysis, this exhibition at the Mercantile – the oldest library west of the Mississippi, according to its institutional brief – poses the problem of what, in a limited space, to leave unlauded: Copious examples of photojournalism, among them the famous Chicago Daily Tribune “Dewey Defeats Truman” shot, whose original the Mercantile holds?

Editions of non-English St. Louis newspapers, like the Nov. 6, 1832, German Anzeiger des Westens, whose blackletter nameplate’s second s looks elongated enough to impersonate an f?

Ink- and age-darkened hardware from the prime of linotype, hot metal and etaoin shrdlu (the precursor of contemporary lorem ipsum text), equipment often containing more steel than the average auto nowadays?

The sheer physicality of that hardware, in particular, serves to emphasize the utter weightlessness of electrons, pixels and, by extension, many of today’s modes of communication – and recalls a caveat from acclaimed essayist/ literary critic Sven Birkerts.

“I would urge that we not fall all over ourselves in our haste to filter all of our experience through circuitries,” Birkerts cautions in his indispensable 1994 meditation, The Gutenberg Elegies. “We are in some danger of believing that the speed and wizardry of our gadgets have freed us from the sometimes arduous work of turning pages in silence.” l

Glass Newsprint falls to pieces faster than people do.

Given that sad fact, John N. Hoover, the executive director of the St. Louis Mercantile Library, briefly recounts precautions taken to protect the main components of “Headlines of History,” the splendid exhibition on display there through Sept. 3, 2019.

“Items too fragile were not exhibited, and some will be shown briefly in other colloquial presentations,” Hoover says.

“All the items are so fragile that this is the first exhibition of its kind in memory in St. Louis.

It’s been delayed here for the planning involved, due to fragility concerns, for 25 years. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance for the public to see these original newspaper editions in an exhibition setting.”

Regarding newsprint, he stresses the necessity of climate-controlled storage and low humidity, adding: “When hard copies are exhibited, we monitor humidity and heat levels daily, we shield lighting to protect items from ultraviolet fading, and we use a variety of book supports, Mylar strapping and other nonreactive tools for mounting objects.”

Hoover also characterizes the current exhibition’s cases, many of which incorporate glass fully a quarter of an inch thick, as “secure” and notes they’re “monitored by security on camera and walkthrough inspection.”

In storing materials like those displayed in that exhibition, Hoover says the Mercantile favors a horizontal ideal, noting, “The older the paper, the flatter it should be shelved.” He also mentions the use of acid-free and Mylar folders for unbound, early issues or treasured editions, with some editions repaired and reboxed.

Finally, for general reading-room use, Hoover says the Mercantile established a “robust microfilm and scanning program” to shield original hard copies, which, past a certain age, can tear at the turn of a page – and even disintegrate like last autumn’s fallen leaves.
