from the

EDITOR ‌THIS WEEK, LN FASHION EDITOR KATIE YEADON PUT TOGETHER a stunning spread to preview this fall’s fashions. And although it might not seem like it with temperatures in the 90s this week, fall is just around the corner. The change in seasons got me thinking how easy it can be to let your daily routine gradually slip into a rut – take the kids to school, go to work, eat at the same restaurants, and never venture outside your bubble of familiarity. But as the days get shorter and the nights get cooler, I suggest we take this chance to see what we’ve been missing. There are so many opportunities in St. Louis to find something new. Never seen the St. Louis Symphony’s free annual concert in Forest Park? It’s coming up on Sept. 15, and by all accounts it’s not-to-be-missed. Never been to an exhibit at the Contemporary Art Museum? Their fall season is about to start, and you can read about it starting on page 92. And of course, if the only change-up your routine needs is a new fall wardrobe, you can see all the new trends in our Fall in Love fashion spread, which begins on page 64.

T

he annual Light the Night Walk serves as an inspiration to cancer patients and their families and friends throughout the St. Louis area. The event raises funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which are used to provide research, lifesaving treatments and advocacy for those battling blood cancers. Meet this year’s Honored Heroes, who will be celebrated at the event.

Julia age 4

Julia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on June 20, 2014, a day her mother, Liz Drummond, remembers well. Julia had come down with a slight fever, and as she slept with her parents, she kept hitting them with her arms and legs. “We knew it was something,” Drummond recalls. “We didn’t feel like we could take her to the hospital, but we were concerned. Later, we found out that (the limb movement while sleeping) was probably a sign of the bone marrow breaking down in her long bones.” Usually an exceptionally energetic child, Julia also became very lethargic. Drummond brought her to the hospital three times, only to be told that it was probably a virus or mononucleosis and blood work wasn’t necessary, she recalls. A week after the third trip, seeing that Julia’s condition wasn’t improving, Drummond called the pediatrician, who approved blood work. “We got the results the next morning, and they said, ‘You need to be here when the office opens,’” she says. “Her hemoglobin was extremely low, and I think that 76 percent of her blood was cancer.” Julia was rushed to the emergency room and spent more than a month in intensive treatment during her initial hospital stay. During the past year, treatment has included chemotherapy as well as cranial radiation, Drummond says. “She’s been hospitalized many times; the simplest illness can really get her because the chemo can affect her immune system.” Despite her trials, Julia is “a riot,” according to Drummond. “She cracks people up wherever we go.” And she still has plenty of energy. “For a while, she thought her last name was Stop because she would always run away, and we would tell her, ‘Julia Drummond, stop!’ So when people asked her name, she would tell them ‘Julia Drummond Stop.’” After their first Light the Night Walk last year, Drummond says her family would never miss it: “I’ve never been so moved or inspired in my life. It was beautiful. The beginning was beautiful, but when it became dark and the lanterns came on, I have never been so in awe.”

gram age 6

Gram was diagnosed with T-cell ALL leukemia on Feb. 10, 2014, according to his mom, Donielle Edwards. The first symptom was swollen lymph nodes, and the doctor originally thought he had mumps, she recalls. He was started on an antibiotic, but after three days the swelling had gotten worse, and he was also having severe nosebleeds. They took him to St. Louis Children’s Hospital and had blood work done, then received the ALL diagnosis. Gram was admitted for initial treatment, which included bone marrow biopsies at day one and day 30, as well as multiple chemotherapy treatments per week. After the 30-day biopsy, he was put in remission. “He still takes (oral) chemo

Campbell age 6

On Halloween three years ago, Campbell had a low-grade fever and was complaining of stomachaches, recalls her mom, Tannin Crask. “She was going to Lindbergh Early Childhood, and they were having parties,” she says. “I dressed her up in her Dorothy costume and told her we could go for a little bit and see how she felt. I called the pediatrician in the meantime.” That afternoon, they went to see the doctor, who felt Campbell’s stomach during the examination and said it was probably mono. “[But] I saw in her eye, when she felt her stomach, that it was probably more than that,” Crask says. Mother and daughter returned to school while the blood work was being processed, but were called back fewer than 20 minutes after their arrival, Crask says. They were told the results showed leukemia and went to meet an oncologist at the David C. Pratt Cancer Center at Mercy. The doctors created a two-and-a-half-year treatment plan for Campbell, which started with a 30-day induction period. Crask took a leave of absence from her job to be with Campbell as she received treatments including chemotherapy, steroids and antibiotics. The next stage, called consolidation, lasted several months and included intrathecal chemotherapy treatments, where the treatment is injected into the spine. “She missed a lot of school, but her class did a lot of things like making cards to send her,” Crask says. “They would send her packets and videos, and they made a patchwork quilt that they donated to the clinic.” After the six-month consolidation period, there was a two-year maintenance phase, which still included nightly oral chemotherapy and intermittent intrathecal chemotherapy. “She was 3 at the time she was diagnosed; I felt like she was going on 23,” Crask says. “She had a good perspective that she was sick, and these were the parameters and rules she had to follow… she retained a lot more than I had intentionally shared or expected. Even at her sickest, she had a sense of humor and tried to get people to laugh. That continues to this day. She and my son are really sarcastic and have a witty sense of

t Light the Night Walk, an estimated 15,000 participants will gather in Forest Park to support lifesaving research and treatments for cancer. As one of nearly 200 events nationwide, the event allows participants to join as individuals or to form a team. In addition to the walk, entertainment includes live music by Fabulous Motown Revue, food and family-friendly activities. Each participant who raises at least $100 earns the title of Champion for Cures and receives a T-shirt, wristband for complimentary food and a colored lantern. For those who want the VIP treatment, raise $1,000 or more and achieve Bright Lights status. Cancer survivors carry white lanterns, supporters receive red lanterns and those walking in memory of loved ones carry gold lanterns. He’s a smart child, and we’ve tried to explain everything to him so he knows what’s going on.” She adds that Gram’s school has been supportive, holding fundraisers and getting involved. “We have met quite a few people in all this, and the best thing I can say is we have put everything into God’s hands,” she says. “Keep your faith and don’t let everything going on in your life take over and rule you.”

A GATHERING SPACE

I

By Robyn Dexter

nterior designer Victoria Dreste of Victoria Dreste Designs has spent a few years working with her client as the house was being built, so Dreste knew exactly what the homeowner had in mind. “We worked on this big, open area that’s both a family room and a breakfast area,” Dreste says. “The client likes color, so we used the strong colors in the furnishings rather than the walls. It’s a light – yet colorful – space.” It was important to the client to have comfortable, good-looking furniture, so the designer integrated a comfy sofa, chairs and an upholstered bench. The table and bench were refurbished, which “worked beautifully in the space.” Since the space was planned before the home was built, Dreste says she didn’t really have any challenges working with the space. “The client put a lot of thought into what she wanted in her new space,” Dreste says. “It was done in such a way that it works great as a multi-purpose room.”

Design Speak

A

s a child, Kristy DeGuire cherished her time playing in the creeks and exploring the woodlands in the backyard of her parents’ Eureka home. She held onto that love of the great outdoors as she grew up and attended architecture school, choosing landscape architecture for her career path. These days, DeGuire uses her company, DG2 Design, to give kids and adults of all abilities the same kind of first-hand experience with nature she had growing up through landscape architecture, whether they are at home, at work or at a local park. LN recently spoke with DeGuire to learn more about her sustainable and accessible landscape projects. Tell us about why sustainable landscape architecture is important. We are able to help the environment through our designs. If we can be smart about growth and design, we can either preserve or restore a site as we’re working on it. Our motto is to nourish, restore and connect. And that’s what we do with each site. We connect people to the environment that we have touched. The benefits of sustainable landscape architecture [versus conventional landscaping] are cost-effectiveness, environmental, educational and recreational.

By Brittany Nay

Describe accessible landscape architecture. My husband, Jeremiah, was paralyzed nine years ago. He is in a wheelchair, and my son has a walker. You can be educated in accessible design, but you don’t understand it until you live every day with someone who has different abilities. It’s about understanding the transition for things like bicycles and chairs on different materials and grades, the placement of curbs, accessible parking spaces and more. If you’re doing good design, you’re designing sustainably and holistically. Tell us about your and Jeremiah’s approach to garden design. We have a big garden design project going on at our house that sits on 3 acres. At least 2 of those acres will be restored back to prairie. We’re planning this together because we want to save on chemicals and mowing costs, and we’d rather spend time with our three kids than mowing. There’s also an educational component to restoring the habitat: It will allow the kids to watch the butterflies and bees, and learn how that betters our vegetable garden. What are some of your top tips for fall garden design? One big thing people don’t realize is the benefit of leaves. Compost them or mulch them: They can be really beneficial for your landscape, and it keeps

them out of the storm drains. Fall also is actually the best time to plant trees and shrubs. So if people have projects, they don’t have to wait until spring. They can start the design in late summer and implement it in late fall. This will give the trees and shrubs time to get established before the summer heat next year. Tell us about some of your high-profile sustainable landscape architecture projects. The Upper Muny parking lot, now called Festival & Parking Plaza, was a big transformation we did with Horner & Shifrin engineering firm that just opened this summer. It has 80 new trees and more than 800 new shrubs, as well as walkways that allow for a safe and accessible entrance to The Muny. Rather than a traditional stormwater piped system, the parking lot utilizes multiple bioretention basins, an important technique that uses soil, plants and microbes to treat stormwater. Stormwater is directed to the basin, then percolates through the system, where it is treated with native plants and a combination of bio soil media. What are some of your upcoming projects? Among projects we are planning is a Gravois Greenway extension of Grant’s Trail, which has about 600,000 users, to extend to River des Peres Greenway.

At home with Ken & Phyllis lAngsdorf

K

the breadth of the couple’s art collection is represented in the home’s entryway. Contemporary canvases, pieces made of glass and wood and photography make up the bulk of their collection.

en and Phyllis Langsdorf purchased their fabulous top-floor duplex overlooking Forest Park 17 years ago after deciding to sell their home on Lindell Boulevard. They oversaw a complete gut rehab of the home alongside architect David Mason and interior designer Mary Fischer (who has, sadly, since passed away). Together, the team created a gorgeous interior that has withstood the test of time. Phyllis originally hails from Dallas. She arrived in St. Louis via Houston, where she worked in the fashion industry, catching the professional eye of famous St. Louis retailer, J. Arthur “Cubby” Baer of department store chain Stix, Baer & Fuller. After arriving in St. Louis for the new position, she met Ken, a real estate investor and attorney. The couple always has been civic-minded and very involved in the St. Louis community. Most recently, Ken was a member of the Grand Center board, and Phyllis is active on the boards of the St. Louis Fashion Fund, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Women of Achievement and has recently rotated off the Sheldon Arts Foundation Board of Directors. Since the Langsdorfs moved into the building, it has received more than $10 million in necessary improvements, something Phyllis is passionate about as the building’s board president. All of the building’s windows, for example, have been replaced from the third floor up, which allows homeowners to not only enjoy the art and collections in pure daylight (as, previously, window coverings had to be closed to protect fabrics and art), but also to take in the beautiful city views, which extend past the Gateway Arch. LadueNews.com | sePtemBer 4, 2015

23

“Maintaining and improving the building has been a challenge, and we lost some residents due to assessments, but in the end the building is in top condition, and the current residents are grateful,” Phyllis says. Both Phyllis and Ken come from families of collectors; Ken’s mother owned the Richelle Gallery in Clayton from 1960 to 1968, and a few pieces from the gallery jump-started the Langsdorfs’ contemporary art collection. Ken’s mother brought many French and Italian artists to St. Louis, including Charles Levier, Claude Venard, Nicola Simbari and Pierre Doutreleau, who are each represented in the Langsdorfs’ collection. The couple’s passion for art has led to an eclectic collection that not only focuses on contemporary paintings, but also pieces made with glass and wood, as well as photography. Phyllis’ stepmother was an artist, and she has been interested in paintings and sculptures since childhood. In the past few years, Ken and Phyllis sold their extensive collection of Chinese monochrome pottery in London and New York to make way for new glass and wood works. In the couple’s dining room, a large and striking painting by Martina Nehrling commands the room. Titled My Grandmother’s Lipsticks, the painting has a poignant story – Nehrling inherited her grandmother’s lipstick collection, and the painting represents the many shades of lipstick. In addition to paintings and sculptures, Phyllis also collects teapots. She loves to drink tea, and one year, a friend gifted her with a beautiful teapot for her birthday. Today, her collection of teapots is primarily displayed in the couple’s kitchen, where they complement the antique Spanish art nouveau tiles in the backsplash, which the Langdorfs purchased on a trip to Spain. “It only took an hour and a half to go through all they had and hand-select the ones we wanted,” Phyllis says with a smile. Although vastly different, Phyllis has managed to seamlessly combine and curate contemporary artwork with antique pieces in the couple’s home. After years working in the fashion industry, Phyllis has a trained eye for scale and proportions, leading to a home filled with just the right balance of color, texture, whimsy and history.

Above: The stairway to the second floor is bookended by a collection of Indian baskets and black and white photography. Below: Phyllis’ extensive collection of sculptural and colorful teapots began with the gift of a simple white teapot.

MILLION DOLLAR MARKET: Feature Story

The Ryan TRadiTion

Exquisite

An

Estate By Brittany Nay

P

erched atop a rolling hill on the grounds of the St. Louis Country Club is a grand European-style estate. Built in 1927, the 9,800-squarefoot, 7-bedroom, 6-full and 3-half bath manse at 15 Pine Valley in Ladue is listed by The Ryan Tradition with Coldwell Banker Gundaker for $4,950,000. The regal abode has been upgraded with modern amenities, while still retaining its classic English charm. “The St. Louis Country Club is one of our finest, most desirable areas, and the home’s location on its grounds means it’s very private. It gives you a very serene feeling,” notes John Ryan, broker/sales associate for Coldwell Banker Gundaker. Perfect for entertaining, the home’s spacious first-floor rooms open to an impressive terrace and sparkling pool. And the enjoyment continues in the basement, with an old-fashioned English rathskeller, complete with a bar featuring classic wood carvings. “The home is great for a top professional or senior corporate executive who wants a place to do a lot of entertaining,” Ryan says. “It also can accommodate a large family.” The home sits on 2 acres of meticulously landscaped land, and John Burroughs School is only a short walk away. The property also has a carriage house, beautifully remodeled just last year, which Ryan says makes for ideal guest quarters. The property is one of two significant listings on the St. Louis Country Club grounds through The Ryan Tradition. The other impressive estate, located at 800

28

Barnes Road, is also for sale. Both properties are perfect examples of The Ryan Tradition’s specialty – listing and selling homes in the upper-tier real estate market in the city’s central corridor for the past 50 years. The organization was established in 1965 by Ryan’s mother, Anne. In 1978, she founded a division to focus efforts on the highend market. Ryan joined his mother in 1991, bringing 13 years of commercial real estate experience with him – and The Ryan Tradition was solidified. Through the years, the Ryans have consistently led the upper-tier market in sales volume, transaction size and average sale price. Since 1991, sales have reached almost $900 million, with more than $35 million generated last year alone. And their highest sale price in recent years is $8 million, according to Ryan. As the market continues to recover from the economic downturn, Ryan says he has a positive outlook for future growth. “The market seems to finally be solidifying in St. Louis,” he says. “Since the challenges of the financial crisis of 2008, we are really seeing it start to stabilize.” We are seeing particularly strong activity return to the very top-end market, with both new construction and resales, Ryan adds. With inventory and interest rates remaining low, Ryan says now is the time to make an investment.

“There’s still a lot of value in the market,” he says. “People buying today are going to be very pleased with their purchase in next three to five years as the market continues to improve. It all bodes well for the community.” 314-993-8000, theryantradition.com

AGENT PROFILE

Kim Jones OF BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY HOMESERVICES ALLIANCE REAL ESTATE

‌K

By Amanda Dahl

im Jones of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Alliance Real Estate approaches her role as a realtor with a personal touch. “The Zig Ziglar quote, ‘stop selling, start helping,’ resonates with me. I never considered my role as one of a salesperson; I view it as being more of a consultant and advocate, and getting a clear vision of my clients’ goals to facilitate those goals into reality,” Jones says. Jones originally began in the corporate world with a position in retail merchandising. It seemed a far cry for her to jump into the housing industry, but Jones recognized where her true interests lay. “I’ve always had an admiration for beautiful homes, and in the story each tells. After having my first child, I decided to take the leap and change career paths.” Since then, she’s

had another child, and faces the challenge of balancing work and life with two young boys. She explains, “I pride myself on being a proficient multi-tasker and thrive with having an unconventional schedule. I also am blessed with a supportive husband, and an amazing network of family and friends.” In the industry for almost nine years, Jones values integrity and professionalism most in her profession, making her a valuable resource for those on the market. “Your reputation is all you have in this business, and it speaks volumes about your character and personal brand,” Jones says. This attitude showcases her strong work ethic and determination to deliver the best service to each and every client. Ultimately though, Jones views her clients with ultimate respect. “I consider it an honor

Ted Collier Five Fall-perFect Fashion trends –

By Katie Yeadon | Photos by Sarah Conard

and how to wear them this season As August gives way to September, fall fashion ushers out summer styles

in favor of cold-weather looks and trends. Start the season off on the right – and well-heeled – foot with these five looks, each of which represents a fashion trend that ruled the runway this season.

64   LadueNews.com | September 4, 2015

GrAy MAtters Gray is one the season’s biggest colors. Timeless and elegant, don’t be afraid to layer grays with just a pop of color (bright lipstick, for example) or with animal prints (like the bag pictured here). All items from Neiman Marcus, neimanmarcus.com Vince coat ($695) Theory sweater ($255) and pants ($295) Valentino heels ($1,045) Cusp earrings ($62) Elizabeth and James bag ($595) LadueNews.com | September 4, 2015   65

VICTORIAN REVIVAL Fashion loves to visit the past for inspiration, and for fall many designers took their cue from the Victorian era. Romantic blouses, rich brocade and layers of cross necklaces are just a few pieces that bring this trend to life. All items except heels from Vie, viestlouis.com Haute Hippie blouse ($435) Nicole Miller brocade pants ($245) Two necklaces ($463 and $438) Earrings ($445) Ring ($310) Belt ($438) Bag ($234) Joie heels ($375), Neiman Marcus, neimanmarcus.com

’70S BOHO Every few years, the jean leg shifts and this fall we’ve seen the return of the wide-leg. Pair wide-leg jeans with a flowy top and a fur vest for a fresh take on ‘70s style. SAVILLE ROW Men’s wear is a staple for fall, and Rag & Bone has a refreshing take on the trend. t La Patisserie Chouquette in Botanical Heights, pastry designer and coowner Simone Faure makes decadent French- and New Orleans-inspired pastries and sweet treats so lovely and refined you’ll feel transported to a charming Parisian café. In addition to the rich and gorgeous treats glittering in the bakery’s case, (everything is peanut- and gluten-free, too) Chouquette offers a Macaron of the Month Club that ships the experience straight to your door, plus weekly (and reservation only) afternoon teas. Faure’s work was most recently recognized on Food Network’s Spring Baking Championship, where she competed with bakers across the country, and last year, her ornate wedding cakes were featured in Martha Stewart Weddings magazine. She also manages pastries, bread and desserts for co-owner Ben Poremba’s restaurant group, Bengelina Hospitality Group, which includes Elaia and Olio as well as Old Standard Fried Chicken, all on Tower Grove Avenue in Botanical Heights. How many years have you been doing this work? I’ve been baking 19 years – wow! La Patisserie Chouquette has been open for two and a half years. Prior to opening Chouquette, I was executive pastry chef at The Ritz-Carlton, Clayton. What’s a typical day like for you at the bakery? Getting up at 3 a.m. and preparing my son’s breakfast and uniform for school. I grab a couple of secret kisses from my husband and son while they’re still asleep, as I creep around downstairs, taking care of any last-minute emails or social media posts for the day. I enter the kitchen (at the bakery) in the wee hours of the morning and begin my day by making our signature French macarons. From there, the day is filled with processing orders, inventory and planning cake production for the end of the week. What’s an a typical day like for you at work? At any moment, a customer can walk in, in dire need of an eight-tiered showstopper for his wife’s birthday that he completely forgot about. He’s already in the doghouse, and you know the only thing keeping a roof over his head is this cake – and who’s there to save the day? La Patisserie Chouquette. Yep, we save marriages, one cake at a time. What’s your favorite thing about your work? My favorite part has to be coaching, counseling and guiding young culinarians. My pastry cooks have such different approaches to food and life, but what they all have in common is that they have never worked with someone like me. I’m like the pastry therapist in the kitchen. I love giving advice, whether they take it or not. La Patisserie Chouquette, 1626 Tower Grove Ave., Botanical Heights, 314-932-7935, simonefaure.com

GAME ON!

Things I

BELIEVE

By Frank Cusumano

‌1

I believe people who buy St. Louis Rams tickets are better people than I am. I admire how they can still support Stan Kroenke’s team after what he is trying to do to our town. Losing an NFL team is devastating, and losing two is embarrassing.

2

I believe we still have some gunpowder left. I believe that by the time owners vote in January, we will have crossed every T and dotted every I. We are going to make it difficult for the owners to say no to us.

3

I believe that I should have been born 30 years later. When I played at University of Missouri-St. Louis, our road trips were to Evansville, Indiana, and Louisville, Kentucky. The Saint Louis University basketball team just got back from Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Six days, three games: What a life.

4 5

I believe Donald Trump vs. Joe Biden debates (if they happen) could be the best bit of American TV since “Who Shot JR?” on Dallas.

I believe I can’t remember a time in St. Louis Cardinals history where the roster was loaded with so many really good players 26 or younger: Heyward, Piscotty, Grichuk, Wong, Rosenthal, Siegrist, Martinez and Wacha.

6 7

I believe Mike Matheny’s ability to relate to players and to always have their backs is the best we have ever had in our town.

I believe I am amazed on how much assistants make now in college football. The offensive coordinator at the University of Missouri is going to make $675,000 this year.

8

I believe if I were a head football coach like Gary Pinkel at the University of Missouri, I would play an easy nonconference schedule and go into every conference season already 4:0.

What is Spirit of Women? Spirit of Women at St. Luke’s Hospital is how we care for you, the caregiver for everyone else. It’s how we personalize your health experience. It’s how we help you maintain good health. It is our commitment to providing leading women’s health education and services to the community.

9

I believe our head men’s basketball coaches at Saint Louis University and University of Missouri have a great deal in common. Jim Crews and Kim Anderson are both in their 60s, both had successful playing careers where they played for legends, both have had a great deal of success and now both have to find a way to win again.

10 11

I believe I am getting old, because I find myself wanting to watch political shows much more than a bunch of sportswriters arguing on ESPN.

232 S. Woods Mill Road Chesterfield, MO 63017

I believe Ted Simmons, who just went into the Cardinals Hall of Fame, deserves to be in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. How in the world did all those writers not vote for him? How in the world do some of these writers have votes, when broadcasters like Vin Scully and Bob Costas don’t have votes?

12 13

I believe the Hall of Fame night in the NFL is the single most emotional day in sports each year. I would rather watch their speeches than a good movie.

Finally, I believe my best night of the summer was watching Earth Wind & Fire and Chicago at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre. At the end, Earth Wind & Fire came out dressed in all white, Chicago came out dressed in all black and they performed the hit song “September” together. Bar Room Call

‌I

was at dinner not too long ago when a lively debate broke out. It was nothing memorable — which Godfather movie contained which group of actors, or how many state capitals are named after presidents — just some engaging trivia. However, this night, there was a know-it-all at the table. And, I swear, when that person isn’t me, it is incredibly annoying. But sure enough, she was there with all the answers, and if I’m not mistaken, she was acting the slightest bit smug. Perhaps you know her. Her name is Siri. Siri knows everything. She even has a sense of humor. (Tell her you love her, or ask her what zero divided by zero is.) She can tell you the players implicated in the Chicago Black Sox scandal or the president of Hungary. She can tell you the names of recent hurricanes and she knows every Oscar winner ever. And with that encyclopedic knowledge at our fingertips, the discussion is over. Siri has killed the bar room debate. With one pregnant press of a button on our phones,

By Debbie Baldwin

Siri can tell us really anything. It’s a scorched earth trivia contest. If you think Mark Twain wrote A Tale of Two Cities, you are not only proven wrong, but shamed into silence by the sheer speed of Siri’s smackdown. Siri is the ‘phone a friend’ every Who Wants to be a Millionaire? contestant wished they had. And she is absolutely no fun. Siri, in all her various incarnations (and believe me, I get the irony of using the word incarnation here), is quickly becoming indispensable. You can find your friends, buy a book, schedule a meeting, make reservations, get movie times, and ruin a trivia debate with the touch of a button. I miss trying to remember who that actress was in that movie, or figuring out if “dearth” and “spate” are synonyms or antonyms. Is there a way to engage a little impulse control and, just for a while, keep Siri locked away in our phones? It would be so nice to sit around with some friends and just indulge in an energetic and totally meaningless debate. I’ll have to ask Siri if there’s a way to do that.

Named after the Italian word for “flowers,” flower-shaped fiori is fittingly the signature noodle at Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria in Rock Hill. Having lived in Italy for some time, chef-owner Katie Lee Collier learned how to make fresh pasta and its many forms during her time abroad. Her Fiori Arrabiatta is a wonderfully flavorful and hearty dish featuring a thick sauce that effortlessly clings to the grooves in the unique noodles. How unique? “We are the only restaurant in the U.S. that makes this noodle,” Collier explains. Made in-house like all of the pastas at Katie’s, the fiori is created from locally sourced, four-day milled semolina flour. The dish is paired with Katie’s arrabiatta sauce, which also is prepared in-house with San Marzano tomatoes, mascarpone cheese, chile flakes and fresh arugula. The Fiori Arrabiatta is available at Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria for dinner and lunch, and is included on the restaurant’s lunch special menu.

World Pediatric Project

In St. Louis, the World Pediatric Project connects local doctors and hospitals with children in need from around the world. By Connie Mitchell

Brandon has the most beautiful smile. Not even a year old, his eyes sparkle with life, and he returns giggles and snuggles. Cindy Frank was like everyone else who met Brandon at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital: immediately drawn in by his happy personality.

A

life was saved… It was just unbelievably touching.” Frank has been on the job since last May, and her enthusiasm for WPP is palpable. She describes the program as a “well-kept secret,” and hopes that as people learn more about it, the nonprofit will benefit from increased volunteer and financial support. The program also has an office in Richmond, Virginia, and each year the two offices support the work of more than 40 medical teams of pediatric specialists who travel to various locations and treat children on-site, as well as identify those who need advanced treatment at partner hospitals. In addition to Cardinal Glennon, the St. Louis office partners with Family Care Health Centers, Mercy Children’s Hospital St. Louis, Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital, Shriners Hospitals for Children – St. Louis and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. WPP also works to help the underserved nations it visits create the capacity to provide more health care

for critically ill children. The organization provides skills training, equipment donations and relationships with local hospitals and governments to improve health protocols. “This is what allows us to help kids now and also in the future,” Frank says. WPP is relatively lean in terms of staff and finances, so the organization is careful to make the most of its resources. “We all work hard within the parameters of what we have,” Frank says. “We have staff who work with the international teams; and many of these teams travel year after year so we’re not necessarily putting new teams together, which makes us unique. It may be the same orthopedic team or the same cardiac team that travels to the same place every year. We have the same partnerships on the ground and they expect the same team year after year, and they’ve been searching out (children) throughout the year to get this care for them.”

s executive director of the World Pediatric Project’s (WPP) St. Louis office, Frank works with physicians from several partner hospitals in the St. Louis area who donate services to critically ill children in Central America and the Caribbean. One such physician is Dr. M. Babak Rahimi, a pediatric cardiologist at Cardinal Glennon and one of WWP’s partners. Under the WPP umbrella, Dr. Rahimi travels annually to the mountainous Caribbean island of Dominica, where he screens children for cardiac conditions and abnormalities. “This year, Dr. Rahimi identified two children who needed to come to St. Louis for lifesaving open-heart surgery,” Frank says. “He came back and got the hospital to agree to accept both of the patients.” One of those young patients was baby Brandon. “He was just so teeny – not eating and losing weight,” Frank recalls. “And after his surgery, oh my gosh, to see his mother when she knew that her son’s

When children arrive in St. Louis for treatment, the WPP has a framework in place to help mobilize local resources, too. “We bring local members of the community into what we do,” Frank says. “We have a volunteer coordinator on staff, and while the children are in town, we have volunteers who take them to the Ronald McDonald House where they stay, spend some time with them, and take them to their doctor’s appointments. We have help from hundreds of volunteers, in addition to our small staff.” Frank hopes WPP will be able to increase its services both abroad and locally in the next few years. She estimates that more than 80 children were treated in St. Louis through the WPP last year and expects that number to increase this year. Some children stay for only a few weeks, while others may stay for months. Forty-two medical teams traveled to WPP partner locations last year, and Frank expects that side of the program to expand, as well. “It’s a very large responsibility for our staff and volunteers to make sure kids and their guardians are cared for the whole time they’re (in St. Louis),” Frank

FOCUS ON HEALTH: Feature Story

PPersonalized Fitness nutriFormance

By Robyn Dexter

N

o matter the age, fitness level or understanding of nutrition, a place in St. Louis can help its clients figure out a fitness plan catered just to them. Since 1997, NutriFormance in Frontenac has been providing nutrition coaching and personal training to help its clients reach their goals, whether they want to be able to walk faster or are recovering from an injury. NutriFormance’s core clientele ranges in age from 10 to 90, but they all have a common theme, says co-founder Dale Huff: They have a performance-based goal. “Our post-rehab work is really taking off,” he says. “We’re a good fit for people who want to get back out on the field.” NutriFormance has a physical therapist on staff who’s able to assess injuries, which Huff calls a “great component.”

“People want to move better and feel better,” he says. “They also want to understand nutrition. These are our goals today and every day.” Some other key aspects of the NutriFormance atmosphere include small-group personal training and massage therapy. The small-group training class consists of two to four people, who participate in a blend of personal training and reformer Pilates. “It’s pretty unique, and you get the best of both worlds for a great price,” Huff says. “It’s ideal for someone who is relatively injury-free and wants a metabolic approach, coupled with core strength and flexibility.” He notes that a trend he’s seeing is people doing metabolic training all the time, with “really intense work-outs all week, but nothing to recover and restore.” Small-group personal training helps clients

find that balance of multiple fitness activities. “Oftentimes, people think they’re not getting a good work-out if the intensity isn’t high,” Huff says, noting that dispelling that myth is the premise of this program. Another thing that makes NutriFormance unique is the advantages that come with a personal training membership. If a client commits to seeing a trainer a set number of times in a month, they also get access to all of NutriFormance’s classes. “We’ve built in more opportunities for people to get fit, and that helps the client acknowledge their goals more,” Huff says. NutriFormance offers a trial membership and complimentary consultations, Huff says. “We want people to understand and see for themselves what makes us unique.”

aplewood is well known for its preeminent dining district, with plenty of restaurants of all stripes to satisfy most any craving – whether that be authentic Italian or farmfresh fare. Some of the best in food and drink in the city can be found at Water Street, where the menu boasts an extensive array of dishes, each made with fresh ingredients. The restaurant is also not far from Webster Groves, making it an easy spot to hit before or after performances at Insight Theater. As an added bonus, service at Water Street is friendly and quick, so

there’s no worries about getting to the show on time. For a quick nosh, try the crawfish dip ($12) made with creamy cheese, fresh crawfish and just enough spice to give it a bit of a kick, served with grilled bread for generous dipping. Entrées, meanwhile, run the gamut; the baked lemon lasagna ($16), for example, is a study in subtlety that layers tender pasta, Italian sausage and rich and decadent béchamel sauce with kale and Swiss chard. The lemon is very fragrant and gives the dish a delicate citrus note. Seafood lovers will enjoy the prosciutto-wrapped mahi mahi ($18), which plates fish served over a bed of greens, grilled bread,

By Matt Sorrell kalamata olives, heirloom cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and red onion topped with tangy balsamic vinaigrette. The mild mahi mahi is nicely accented by the saltiness of the wafer-thin prosciutto. Water Street also serves excellent cocktails, so be sure to indulge in a drink or two with dinner. The effervescent Champagne Tonic, for example, features gin and tonic syrup produced by Pinckney Bend Distillery in New Haven, Missouri, topped with bubbles. Although there are plenty of classic and craft tipples to choose from – including some made with Lion’s Tooth dandelion liqueur, which is produced

A standout is the Booster Gold ($7), a sweet and slightly vegetal combination of carrot and citrus juices, spicy ginger and sweet agave nectar topped with seltzer. arah Daniel is dean of students at a small, liberal arts college named Belmont in Vermont. She’s recently moved there from Pennsylvania and doesn’t know too many people. She’s started a relationship with Ross Collins, a professor at Belmont, and is upset when he tells her that his former lover has moved back. Sarah’s troubled social life is trumped by two incendiary events on campus. First, she prods a young man named Patrick Chibas, who says that he is “Nuyorican,” to list his ethnicity as Hispanic in order to qualify for a scholarship. This results in Patrick losing his financial aid, as well as angering his father for proclaiming a false heritage. Additionally, freshman Simon Brick, one of the few African-American students at the school, has been the recipient of racist notes at his dorm room. Sarah meets with Ross and two deans, Burton Strauss and Catherine Kenney, to discuss possible responses to this inflammatory situation. While Sarah recommends cautiously dealing first with the student, the others opt for a more visible display of the administration’s support for Simon and disdain for his tormentors. While tensions on campus escalate and the administration grows more anxious, Sarah is ordered to craft a plan on how to eliminate racism at Belmont. As she delves further into the issues, however, she realizes that she herself may be more of the problem than the solution. Highlights: Insight Theatre Company concludes its 2015 season with a compelling rendition of Rebecca Gilman’s complex and complicated story about our times and the ongoing racial strife in America. Director Trish Brown coaxes intelligent performances from her veteran performers to show how Spinning into Butter remains relevant 16 years after its premiere at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. Other Info: With no easy answers and no pat solutions, Gilman’s story about the lingering effects of racial unease reveals how the best-intentioned people can harbor secret prejudices. Dante wrote that “each of us has thoughts that would damn hell,” an observation that fits those in charge at tiny Belmont College, even while they are convinced that they are sophisticated and egalitarian. It’s a difficult proposition for Gilman to populate her script with characters that are less admirable upon scrutiny, but to her credit she keeps her premise clear even while occasionally devolving into melodrama. That’s particularly the case with Ross, who seems too weak and ineffectual to garner much attraction, let alone have two women in pursuit of him. John O’Hagan does a solid job conveying Ross’ uncertainties, though, and even steps up his game in a pivotal scene with Jenni Ryan as Sarah in the second act, showing empathy as well as a degree of

By Mark Bretz

understanding of Sarah’s fragile condition. Ryan carries the burden of interpreting Sarah’s role with a multi-layered performance that accentuates the character’s positive traits as well as her own fears, limitations and liabilities. She is able to portray how Sarah can be both well-meaning and destructive at the same time, not always admirable yet not a villain beyond hope, either. Brown benefits from the savvy contributions of John Contini and Erin Kelley as the thick-headed deans who manage to make a bad situation worse with their myopic approach. Contini displays Strauss’ bluster as well as his childish impulses to get what he wants without having a second thought about his appearance. When Strauss recites the controversial children’s story, Little Black Sambo (from which the drama’s title originates), he fully believes that the college and its restless students will benefit from his curious style of leadership. Kelley is equally adept at mining the mean-spirited, self-centered interests of Dean Kenney, who can shove Sarah under the bus in a single-focused effort to protect the bucolic image of the nearly all-white school. Kurt Knoedelseder serves well as Mr. Meyers, a kind of Yoda-esque head of campus security who seems to be wiser and more tolerant of the human condition than his more learned counterparts and serves as Sarah’s ally. Rahames Galvan captures the independent and practical spirit of Patrick to a certain degree, as does Elliott Auch as a WASPish senior in search of a cause to pad his resume before applying to law school. Spinning into Butter raises numerous, stark questions about the relative understanding of race in America across varied backgrounds. Insight Theatre’s intelligent presentation challenges its audience to form their own conclusions.

REVIEW: NO ESCAPE

Hot Zone ‌If you saw Behind Enemy Lines, you know no one is better in an against-all-odds, tough-but-smart, angry-but-vulnerable role than Owen Wilson. (If you did not see Behind Enemy Lines starring Wilson and Gene Hackman, rent it immediately — if not sooner. Great film.) Here too, Wilson plays a man caught in a volatile situation with his wife and children… and no escape… well, probably no escape. Wilson plays Jack Dwyer, a young executive who accepts a job opportunity in Southeast Asia overseeing the construction of a water purification plant. He relocates with his wife Annie (Lake Bell) and two young daughters, and almost immediately, all hell breaks loose. The family is caught in the middle of a violent uprising where armed rebels are killing all foreign nationals. Jack and his family are stranded in the city under siege with only the help of a “tourist” named Hammond (Pierce Brosnan) to help them find sanctuary. The film is absolutely perfectly cast. Wilson is magnetic as the capable, but desperate father; and Bell is his lovely, loyal counterpart. The two make an extremely believable couple; they almost look alike. Brosnan is a pleasant surprise and the film is a heart-stopping mix of white-knuckle action and compelling family drama. It’s a 7.

LEARNING TO DRIVE

Merging Friendship ‌Coming soon to Plaza Frontenac is this charming comedy starring two veteran actors. Set in Manhattan, the movie tells the story of the unlikely friendship between a high-strung writer and the Indian cab driver who takes on the daunting task of teaching her to drive. Wendy (Patricia Clarkson) is a selfinvolved book critic whose life takes an unexpected turn when her husband suddenly leaves her for a younger woman. Adding to the myriad frustrations of life on her own is the fact that Wendy, like many lifelong New Yorkers, has never learned to drive. She enlists the help of a mild mannered Sikh cab driver, Darwan (Ben Kingsley) who is facing a rather different set of marital struggles himself. Darwan patiently teaches the neurotic Wendy to drive and heal, and Wendy helps Darwan prepare for the next stage in his life. Oscar winner Kingsley and nominee Clarkson are charming in this engaging comedy about two people unsure of where life is going to take them. The driving lessons become a none-to-subtle metaphor for taking control of one’s life, but despite the perhaps heavy-handed parallels, this promises to be a funny, endearing film.

Exhibits that

he Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis’ (CAM) fall season will share the rare opportunity to experience works by four leading figures in the contemporary art world. Visitors will be immersed in four unique perspectives, with exhibitions focused on the art of the hand and the handmade captured in four different mediums. Lisa Melandri, executive director of CAM, says the season’s theme was inspired by the breadth of form and expression in contemporary art. “Taken as a whole, (the exhibits) really let us understand what contemporary art can be,” Melandri says. “The works are in different media, allowing you to explore different themes because contemporary art can be so many different things.” We recently caught up with Melandri, who shared insights into each of this season’s exhibitions, which include Hurvin Anderson: Backdrop; Sheila Hicks; Wyatt Kahn: Object Paintings; and Street Views: Marilyn Minter.

Tell us about this season’s featured artists and their works. We have British artist Hurvin Anderson; what’s so phenomenal about this particular show is that he is really well-known for a certain kind of painting, but this exhibit also includes both photographs and sculptural works – neither of which has ever been seen by an American audience. And a wonderful foil to that is the work of Sheila Hicks, who is in her 80s and has about 60 years of work under her belt. We are showing historical and new works from the ’60s to the present, so you can really understand the entirety of the artist’s work over a lifetime. She is someone who has always worked with fiber and textiles that can hang on walls, be they freestanding sculptures or be placed on the floor. So it really does give us a sense of what can be done with fiber – you can weave, crochet, dye or spin it. Wyatt Kahn’s work will be dispersed throughout the museum – we really think of him as a painter, but many of his works are made with absolutely no paint. It makes us think about what color is, and what we assume to be a painting. He is also making white paintings (that) make us rethink what is white, and how many varieties of white there are. His works are very beautiful, poetic and deeply engaging.

How did you select the four artists and their works included in the fall season?

We have artists who are quite young, mid-career and much older, so it’s a really interesting variety. For instance, Marilyn Minter has had a long career as an artist. She was born in 1948 in Louisiana, and many of us know her work through photography or paintings that combine glamor with the grotesque. We are showing a Minter film, which has the absolutely wonderful and hysterical title I’m Not Much But I’m All I Think About, which gives you an immediate sense of her self-deprecation and sense of humor. It will be our Street Views project, so the entire façade of the museum will be a moving image. There’s this metallic sea of liquid, and things are sucked into the vortex of it, such as M-&-Ms – her initials – and the letters “M” and “E,” spelling “me.” So you have this lush visual landscape, but you start to realize it is indeed about (Minter). But that can be transferred to the viewer. It’s projected onto the metallic mesh of our building, so it’s liquid oozing and moving that’s really going to transform the façade so that it looks like the building is moving and melting.

From Marilyn Minter’s I’m Not Much But I’m All I Think About

Tell us about some of the museum’s upcoming events. On First Fridays, all the arts organizations in Grand Center open their doors. At CAM, we have (live) music and special tours. It’s a great way to walk a four-block radius to more than 10 venues to see visual arts, from CAM to the Sheldon Art Galleries, Pulitzer Arts Foundation and Bruno David Gallery. This district is so vibrant and alive with the arts.

What else is going on at the museum this fall? Open Studios STL is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and we are the organizing agency for any artist who wishes to open his or her studio to the public from Oct. 2 to 4. We arrange biking, walking and curator-led tours, and more than 170 St. Louis area-based artists (are) around that weekend, so the public can really understand what do they do and where do they do it. We have incredible talent in our own backyard.

How would you describe the programs offered at CAM? Sometimes people hear the word contemporary and think, “I don’t know what it is” or “I don’t like it.” But contemporary can be many different things, and you can find something that suits you. We have so many different programs to see works in different ways, from book clubs to film screenings – so come on down and try it out.

F

or nearly a year now, Truffles Butchery in Ladue has been allowing Truffles fans to take their food home with them. General manager Aleksander Jovanovic says Butchery is an “extended arm” of Truffles that is truly a modern-style butcher stop. “Truffles has been around for 15 years,” he says. “It was a dream to have a sort of ‘Truffles to-go.’ ” But Butchery isn’t just any butcher shop. Though they do butcher their meat there and sell fresh seafood, they also have a wine selection and a dairy section, as well as prepared sandwiches and salads. “You can get anything from charcoal to utensils, too,” he explains. The idea behind the butcher shop was to enable customers to have a Truffles experience in their home – and to get all the materials in one place. “Everyone who works in the shop is a chef,” Jovanovic says. “That way, our customers can get recommendations on how to prepare what they’re buying, whether it’s grilling or roasting in your own home.” Customers are thrilled to have a shop and service like that in their neighborhood, Jovanovic notes.

Between Truffles and Butchery, they’ve established a loyal clientele of customers who enjoy being able to customize what they order, Jovanovic says. As holiday season approaches, Butchery will have a variety of gift baskets available, including a steak package, a pork sampler, cheese boxes and more. Jovanovic says the baskets are a great success, as is the store’s award-winning wine list. “We have 24 different wines at Butchery and have access to many more,” he says. “Per request, we can get just about any wine imaginable.” Jovanovic is also the wine director, and his expertise and enthusiasm for the topic landed Truffles on World of Fine Wine’s World’s Best Wine Lists 2015. Wine Spectator also just published an article on Jovanovic and Truffles, showcasing the restaurant and his work. “St. Louis is not viewed as a food and wine mecca like Chicago or New York City, but it’s really the best foodie town you haven’t heard of,” Jovanovic explains. “There are so many bad things tied to our city right now, but there are also so many good things happening, too. It’s nice to receive national recognition for what we do.”

There’s never a dull moment at Truffles and Butchery, especially on weekends. At Butchery, customers can request after-hours classes to learn the art of butchery. Attendees learn about the parts of the animal – whether it’s pork or beef – and practice carving. At the end of the class, they take half a hog home. And at Truffles, the weekend starts early with an event called Wine Thursdays. “Every Thursday, we have different purveyor come and present a few different wines. It’s free of charge, and you get a small sampling of each. People get the chance to experience something rare and unique. All we ask in return is that you tell us what you like best,” he says. “We collect votes, and the winner is put on the wine list the next week at wholesale price.” It’s a well-visited event, Jovanovic says, and people come in extremely interested in learning. In addition, they have live music Thursday, Friday and Saturday that “varies from soft rock to jazz to upbeat dance music.” Jovanovic says it makes a night out even more fun - all the way until 1 a.m. 314-567-9100, todayattruffles.com

The Pillar of Strength award dinner this year was especially celebratory – clearly following the lead of our exuberant honorees, Hazel and Arnold Donald. They even carried their passion for helping the community all the way to the dance floor that evening, and we all followed! The funds we raised this year in their honor provide tremendous support to youth who are transitioning to adulthood. KEVIN DROLLINGER, CEO OF EPWORTH

Story and Photos by Diane Anderson

urses and Pumps for Pooches and Pals has become a social calendar highlight for many St. Louis fashionistas, and this year’s 10th annual event at Humane Society headquarters was not to be missed. Attendees enjoyed food and refreshments from St. Louis’ finest restaurants, stunning designer purses and shoes for raffle and, of course, a chance to meet some of the lovable animals up for adoption. Event co-chairs were Pam Nicholson and Judy Gruender; honorary chair was Jan Torrisi-Mokwa. Proceeds benefited the Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Fund, dedicated to investigating, healing and preventing animal abuse.

CHARITIES & NONPROFITS: Feature Story

Ozzie and Friends

at Peabody Opera House

t all started with a dream to help kids stay in school. And from that goal stemmed a huge network of people dedicated to improving lives through the community of golf. An initiative called PGA REACH (Recreation, Education, Awareness, Community and Health) came about when the Gateway PGA REACH Foundation partnered with the 2018 PGA Championship, which will take place at Bellerive Country Club in Town & Country. PGA REACH teamed up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, Boys and Girls Club of Greater St. Louis, Hope Education and Urban K-Life to help at-risk youth, especially in north St. Louis. A big help toward this goal will be the upcoming Ozzie and Friends Concert on Sat., Sept. 19 at Peabody Opera House in Downtown St. Louis, which will directly benefit the PGA REACH initiative. The Gateway PGA REACH Foundation is led by National Baseball Hall-of-Famer Ozzie Smith, for whom the annual concert is named. This year marks the concert’s third in St. Louis, and will feature iconic R&B group Boyz II Men, comedian Gary Mule Deer and a special appearance by Nikko Smith. All proceeds from the evening benefit Gateway PGA REACH’s efforts to fill idle time for local youth and improve classroom attendance. Since 2013, Gateway PGA REACH has donated more

than $250,000 toward programs and partners that do just that. Gateway PGA REACH executive director Josh Riley says the group is already seeing some of the impact they’re having in the community. The group was recently able to announce plans for an educational and recreational facility for the community in north St. Louis. “It has several iterations but if the community responds it could be up to a $5 million undertaking,” Riley says. “Our goal is to have much of this accomplished by the 2018 Centennial PGA Championship.” The Ozzie and Friends benefit concert raised $30,000 last year, with performances by country star Vince Gill and comedian Kathleen Madigan. Ozzie Smith’s son, Nikko Smith, who was a finalist on season four of American Idol, was last year’s opening act. “We saw significant growth last year,” Riley says. “We have our sights set even higher this year.” Riley notes that Ozzie Smith loves music, and the concert allows him to combine two of his passions – music and charity work. “Ozzie is such a sports legend with a great network of friends across the country,” Riley says. “Because of this, we’re able to welcome talents and friends from all around for a good cause.” The concert enables Gateway PGA REACH to

take, as Riley describes it, “big steps” in growing its network and therefore communicating its mission to people across the St. Louis area. Each year, Riley and his team hope to see an increase in support. “We would love to see people who are attending not only for the entertainment but because they love what we’re trying to do.” OzzieAndFriends.com, Ticketmaster.com, 800-245-3000
