EDITOR ‌AFTER GRADUATING FROM COLLEGE, I SPENT WHAT NOW FEELS like a momentary stint living in New York City. I loved exploring the vast and vibrant city and experiencing the energy and life happening all around me. There was always something to do and always something new to see. However, I quickly noticed that there was one thing lacking in my day-to-day life in that concrete jungle: lush green grass and trees.

Although New York certainly has trees, a small circle cutout in the sidewalk every couple of feet didn’t really do much for me during my daily commute – especially compared to growing up in Missouri, where verdant landscapes are seemingly always within reach. The experience made me appreciate nature more, especially trees and greenery thriving outside the bounds of city parks (although, in a pinch, a stroll through Central Park on a sunny day will certainly lift your spirits).

In this week’s Abode section, LN contributing writer Nancy Robinson shares three home furnishings inspired by, you guessed it, trees (p. 27)! The three pieces she selected – a table, fourpanel screen and chair – are perfect additions to any abode. And in the Arts & Culture section, copy editor and staff writer Bryan A. Hollerbach details the history of Laumeier Sculpture Park, as well as its current happenings, amid its 40th anniversary (p. 70). Situated in a lovely green space in Sunset Hills, Laumeier displays world-class art installations against a natural backdrop.

etirement is a well-earned rest. What should be a relaxing time in one’s life, though, can be fraught with complications.

Opportunists are swindling elders out of their money, disabling vital members of communities. One financial firm has taken on the task of protecting the population from elder financial abuse, which costs older adults in the United States an estimated $2.6 billion annually. “The three main challenges seniors face today essentially include making sure you have enough money, how to spend that money and protecting it from any major threats,” Ron Long, director of Regulatory Affairs and Elder Client Initiatives at Wells Fargo Advisors (WFA), says.

Signs of potential fraud, Long notes, include insufficient funds or duplicate payments, and a sudden distrust of family members paired with a desire to change powers of attorney or beneficiary designations.

“Wells Fargo Advisors started having concerns about elder financial abuse because challenges kept coming up in reports,” he says. “Then, 2010 happened – and the first of the baby boomers turned 65. As a firm, we got calls with clients in distress or suffering from a diminished capacity, due to dementia or Alzheimer’s. We saw troubling signs, such as large sums of money being withdrawn from accounts – behavior that wasn’t characteristic of those clients. We didn’t have many tools to work with at that time because privacy rules prevented financial advisors from reaching out to close family.”

Long describes the difficulties of working within the limitations of the law during this difficult period. “In cases of potential abuse, the laws did not allow us to hold a transaction,” he explains. However, those limitations did not deter WFA from creating solutions to positively impact clients. Long began pushing for changes in state laws,

of other states are trying to put that forward – and we will be part of that effort.”

The proactive policy is the result of one committed financial firm, which challenged roadblocks that might interfere with protecting its clients. “At WFA, we now have a dedicated department approaching these types of cases,” Long states. “The team [determines whether to] make a referral to adult protection services and the securities division or, in extreme situations, the police.

In 2016, of about 2,300 cases, 1,000 were referred on [to the proper people]. The team also educates our folks every year through required training, making sure all are aware of key signs and how to report [cases].”

Long reminds people to play their part in protecting seniors. “Folks work hard all their lives to prepare for retirement. [Elder financial abuse] is a tragedy the community should try to prevent. It’s simply the right thing to do. And it can be a cost to the community, when that money ends up elsewhere. If you see something, say something.”

Of course, the first level of protection begins at home. “Stay active, stay involved – and avoid isolation,” Long advises seniors. “Let calls go to voicemail, so you know who to call back. Never give anyone money over the phone. Talk to trusted family members. Let them know the status of your funds and where they are kept. Set up a power of attorney or trust documents, and [list] trusted individuals.”

“We’ve reached across both sides of the aisle to Democrats and Republicans, who listened to our concerns and agree the state could do something,” Long says. “We had great cooperation from the Alzheimer’s Association, among others. In 2015, a rule was passed that [allows], if there’s suspicion, limited outreach to trusted individuals and gives us the right to hold a suspected transaction for up to 15 days. We then notify the state securities division and adult protective services.”

This process brought about a tremendous change in the way financial firms are able to safeguard clients and, therefore, the community.

“This should happen more often,” he declares. “The folks who regulate industry – everybody – working together to get these rules passed – rules that [impact] the country. Missouri was the first state. A number

he Special Education Foundation Women Leaders organization hosted its eighth annual Boutique, Fashion Show and Luncheon in April at the Sheraton Westport Chalet Hotel. The event started with shopping from 10 a.m. to noon and included fashion items, children’s clothing, jewelry and other accessories from more than 25 St. Louisarea vendors. Marta’s, a clothing boutique in Ladue and Chesterfield, provided the fashions. Proceeds from the event provide scholarships for college-bound students with disabilities and beyond the classroom items for five Special School District schools. The organization was formed in July 2009 to help the Special Education Foundation in its mission of providing financial assistance to children and youth with disabilities. It meets several times yearly to discuss ways to help children in their journey to independence. Co-chairing this year’s event were Dana Huxley and Margaret Louvier.

A COZY MORNING BAR

Taylor Design Group helped these clients with almost every room in their house. Kim Taylor of the interior design firm recognized that her clients needed a peaceful space in their house.

“They have two teenagers, and so do I, so I understood that they needed a relaxing master suite,” she says.

Working with the clients, Taylor found that adding a sitting area to the master suite would be a smart addition to the space.

They decided upon a color palette built on a theme of casual elegance, romance and peaceful quiet, and then began their work from there.

“We used dusted sage, muted tones of seaside blue, hints of morning yellow and balanced that with soft French grays and creams,” she says.

Taylor added a custom morning bar, which includes a place to chill a bottle of wine or some fresh fruit for breakfast.

The chairs nearby swivel for easy viewing of the TV or an early morning discussion.

“We added shelves for books and cabinets to provide additional storage,” Taylor says.

The best part? It’s all mobile.

“The morning bar is not built in, so it may move with them someday,” Taylor says.

To select the right fencing for your family’s property, professionals work with homeowners to determine the purpose of the fence. The most common purposes are to provide pet containment, privacy, pool perimeters and protection, or simply to beautify the property. “The fence must be constructed to meet the intended purpose,” Easter says. “If it’s containment of small pets, we may need to do some landscaping along the bottom of the fence to fill in voids where the terrain is not level … or install pickets closer than standard if the pet is likely to try to squeeze through the opening. If the fence is for security … , various types of locking mechanisms can be used on gates, commercial-grade material can be used for added impact resistance, privacy material can be added to limit visibility from outside the fence, [and] the height of the fence can be increased.”

Local experts say most of today’s fences are virtually maintenance-free due to their sustainable materials. “Pinnacle Vinyl Fencing, our newest fence product offering, is a vinyl fence with a rich woodgrain texture that is made to look like wood fencing, but without the maintenance,” Thiel notes, adding that it comes in an array of natural-looking colors, including golden oak, mahogany and walnut. eing able to move independently about your home can be a challenge for someone with disabilities. With this in mind, accessible design aims to meet the needs of people with disabilities and make their abodes more functional for their daily lives.

At Mosby Building Arts, designers and architects are able to offer accessible design solutions that make it possible for clients to stay in their homes for a lifetime, regardless of what life may bring.

Brian Yount, an AIA-registered architect and Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) with Mosby, won a Chrysalis Award in 2015 for his design of an accessible kitchen.

Yount’s client was a man in a wheelchair in Belleville, Illinois, who had bought a condominium in 2002. The home was mostly functional for his needs, but the kitchen wasn’t best suited for

him. Yount’s kitchen rework included cabinet lifts that can be lowered or raised at the touch of a button, along with a deep-drawer dishwasher with a single drawer built right into the countertop.

The sink’s faucet is motion-sensitive, triggered by hand movements, and all base cabinets have easily accessible pullout trays.

“Our goal was to make it a beautiful yet usable space for him,” Yount says. “We were fortunate to have the people at Chrysalis recognize it.”

Mosby also won a Chrysalis Award this year for an accessible master bathroom in Kirkwood.

The bathroom, which had contained a high vanity and small shower, was not fitting for a man in a wheelchair. The Mosby team dismantled the entire room down to the stud walls and then moved all of the plumbing to one wall. The design team created a huge roll-in shower with a variety of handhelds and

body sprays, along with a giant rain head. On the other side, they put in a full body dryer. The client has a progressive disease that limits his movement, and it was taking an hour and a half for his wife to help him bathe. This redesign cut the shower time in half.

Does an affair matter in divorce?

With the advent of no fault divorce, many think that fault no longer matters. As it relates to divorce, the viewpoint is that an affair does not matter at all.

Some think that courts will look at it and give it no weight. In the end, the view is everything is going to be divided in half anyway. Child support and maintenance is going to be what it is. And in terms of child custody, many think an affair is irrelevant.

Is this correct? The reality is that this viewpoint is not accurate in many states.

It is true that to get divorced, parties do not have to show fault for a divorce to be granted. Prior to the advent of no fault divorce, parties would have to show fault like an affair, abandonment, emotional cruelty, violence or some other fault of some kind to get divorced.

But with no fault divorce, that is no lon

ger required. The exact language varies by state, but generally speaking, parties simply have to show that a marriage is irretrievably broken to get divorced.

However in terms of marital property and debt division, and spousal maintenance (alimony), many states still allow the conduct of the parties as one of the factors in terms of making that determination. States like Missouri and Kansas fall into that category. However, Illinois excludes fault as a consideration by statute.

But in terms of child custody, an affair could still have an effect in most states, as long as it has a bearing on the best interests of the children. In cases where an affair can be pointed to having a negative impact on the children and their custody or parenting time with either parent, an affair could still be looked at for custody and parenting

time determination.

Thus, parties who think an affair will have no effect whatsoever are potentially missing the mark. It is true that many judges will give little weight to an affair (even in states that allow it to be considered). At the same time, an affair is not completely irrelevant in every case. In some cases, an affair can ultimately impact the result of the case.

This is especially true when the affair had a financial impact on the marital estate.

ometimes you see a piece of clothing and instantly imagine who would wear it. Perhaps you visualize a celebrity or even a close friend, as the item perfectly matches their personal style.

This is hard to do with Sheri Sherman.

In fact, the only thing Sherman and her wardrobe might have in common is that they are both incredibly dynamic. Sherman has spent years helping local organizations through her volunteer efforts, with causes ranging from the Burns Recovered support group to Washington University’s Edison Theatre. And from huge galas to small fundraisers, she is regularly spotted in society photos supporting these and other groups while dressed to the nines.

“I have a wardrobe that reflects the shopping history of St. Louis – after all, I have been shopping in this city for 55 years, [as I] began seriously at 15,” Sherman says.

“I was a salesperson and model at Saks Fifth Avenue on Maryland Plaza in the ’70s and still have clothes from many stores and boutiques no longer on the scene.”

Currently, Sherman has a varied list of fashion favorites, with stores ranging from Neiman Marcus to Free People and even Chuck’s Boots. But this list seems concise and small compared to her plethora of fashion-related collections. She explains she collects

“I used to wear hats almost every day in the ’80s, but now it is only once in a while,” Sherman says, noting she recently donned a hat to visit Degas, Impressionism, and the Paris Millinery Trade at the Saint Louis Art Museum. Even without a hat, every fashion lover knows accessories can make an outfit. “You can add a beautiful scarf to an ordinary outfit and make a dramatic statement,” Sherman says.

Sherman explains her entire family is fashionfocused. “Our son lives in Hong Kong and has all his clothes custom-tailored,” she says, adding that he’s not the only one to find great apparel there. “My daughter lives in New York, and I never miss the opportunity for a shopping excursion with her. She has a good collection of St. Louis vintage clothing stored in our basement. My husband is also an

excellent dresser, so I live in a family of fashion.”

Sherman says she is always “dressed” – as in, she actually takes the time to properly put together an outfit – if for no other reason than because she has such a fabulous collection of apparel. “Many times, I will pair a new purchase with a piece of clothing from the ’80s, or before!” she adds.

Of the vintage eras, many of which she seems to adore, Sherman says she most loves the styles of the 1930s and 1940s, noting she “covet[s] the gorgeous outfits in old movies and old magazines from the period.”

With a love for fashion this strong, it only makes sense that some of her volunteer work would be related.

Later this year, Sherman will co-chair the “More Than a Fashion Show” event at Neiman Marcus benefiting the Midwest Children’s Burn Camp. This year marks the event’s fifth anniversary, and Sherman has served as co-chair each year. The event will be held on Sept. 7.

Like a suit that’s been altered versus tailored, Adam Foster’s custom jewelry pieces start with the stones and perfect the design from there.

C

ool may be the most overused word in the English language, but occasionally, there’s no better substitute. Sometimes “cool” is the only way to define that “it” factor.

St. Louis’ Adam Foster Fine Jewelry is cool.

This high-end jewelry line combines the world’s greatest materials with top technology, a focus on craftsmanship and a dedication for originality to make jewelry pieces that stand out from the crowd.

“I feel that my designs are a combination of old-world techniques that merge with contemporary designs with the eye of an artist,” says Adam Foster, who explains he looks at jewelry the same way one would look at fine art. This is apparent in his work – his pieces seem far from the jewelry store standards. “What I’m trying to do is get a feeling that when you’re holding this piece of jewelry, you think, ‘Oh, my god, I shouldn’t be touching it … ’ [or,] ‘I thought I knew what gold was, but this doesn’t look or feel like gold to me.’”

Foster notes that in art and much of fashion, the aesthetics are key – everything from how the components look together to the shape while actually being worn – whereas in jewelry, he feels it’s often little more than putting a clear diamond on a shiny band. “For some reason, jewelry … has got to be polished, and it has to have a big stone, and it has to be boring – and I am tired of that,” says Foster.

So for the past 15 years, Foster has been working to shift that mentality. With recycled gold and meticulously selected gemstones, he has created both full collections and ample bespoke items. These high-end pieces are luxurious without being stuffy and one-of-a-kind without being unwearable. The balance seems to be Foster’s specialty.

Raised in South City in St. Louis, Foster left the Gateway City to attend college in Chicago.

While earning his degree in metalsmithing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he founded his business, which he then brought back to St. Louis in 2003 to open his first studio. After several moves, he is now located in Brentwood, with pieces available by appointment only and at Elleard Heffern Fine Jewelers in Clayton. Additionally, Foster is hoping to expand nationally and will head to the luxury COUTURE jewelry show in Las Vegas this summer to help

achieve that goal.

Creating bespoke items is another of Foster’s specialties, and he uses multiple resources to make it as visual for the client as possible.

“The process begins from the moment our clients sit down and start discussing their vision with us,” explains Foster of his expansive pieces. “While we’re talking, I start drawing out their idea with simple paper and pencil.

From there, I use the hand drawing to create the piece in 3-D using a computer program, and once the design has been approved, we can start the manufacturing process.” The client is able to see a nearly perfect version of the design before it’s created.

Often, jewelry items are designed and then stones are found to fit them, whereas Foster’s custom pieces – all done himself – are designed around the stones that go in them.

“There’s a difference between a suit that was made and a suit that was altered,” he explains. For Foster, the components that make up the final piece must be perfect individually as well as together.

“My process for [finding] materials is kind of lengthy – I seek out unusual things,” Foster says, explaining that he constantly looks for stone or metal suppliers while traveling.

“My rule is, if I’m traveling in a foreign country and I get stuck there, is [this potential vendor] [someone] I want to hang out with? My dealers are my friends. They have the same ethics that I have … They are interesting people who would make up the world’s greatest cocktail party.”

MLK: Leading Without “Authority”

‌W

hen official leadership fails (or fails even to try) to lead, mavericks move in to fill the vacuum.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who died 49 years ago last month, was the quintessence of this kind of maverick leadership. The civil rights leader challenged the status quo and championed equality and unity for all.

To be sure, King lacked the formal authority that comes with an appointed or elected position, which explains why he used tactics like street protests and boycotts to help bring his dream to fruition. He exercised informal authority through a wide network of communities that allowed him to recruit people and excite them about the possibility of a brighter future.

A leader gains informal authority when he or she earns the respect and trust of an audience that shares a compelling sense of urgency to effect change. Leaders use the force of moral persuasion to convince people of the need to be led.

King’s sense of constructive impatience inspired many Americans – and indeed, citizens of the world – who saw a courageous man with the audacity to challenge a powerful and often brutally repressive establishment.

People who lead without formal authority know how to seize the moment; they know how to focus attention on a compelling issue. They don’t seek permission.

They don’t let roadblocks stop them. They do, however, possess an overriding sense of determined purpose.

But leading without formal authority can be dangerous. The need to inspire and motivate often requires the oversimplification of complex issues and situations. In doing so, informal leaders also may underestimate the reaction of formal leaders. When one leads without formal authority, those who do have it rarely sit by and allow events to unfold.

For those with sufficient courage, leading without formal authority proves a noble calling – but also one that may bring unforeseen consequences.

King was assassinated in the middle of his leadership journey. Yet he succeeded in transforming an ideal into a cause that would ultimately change the course of history.

The quest of leading without formal authority continues today. We see it in people discontented with things as they are, those who believe passionately in what they’re doing and remain undeterred by cynicism and fear.

I believe that at some point, each of us gets the opportunity to lead without formal authority. It

generally comes when we’re asked to stand for what’s right – when principle becomes something more than a word or an abstraction.

In his celebrated “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on Aug. 28, 1963, King laid out a blueprint for how to lead and assured us that the power to do so resides within each of us. His inspiration and complete and resolute dedication should remind us that leadership is exercised best for a just cause.

Bottom line? We all can lead with and without “authority.” And we must look beyond our present.

About This Summer...

or new college graduates, there’s good news! The latest forecast by the National Association of Colleges and Employers says employers are expecting to hire 5 percent more new graduates this year than in 2016.

That means your college career center probably has more good leads than usual. One new graduate came in this morning to prepare for three interviews next week. We had already fine-tuned his résumé, adding an internship he underestimated, which is common; written a cover letter to engage specific employers; and chosen his interview outfit to minimize distractions.

Armed with a new degree in business (still in highest demand, with engineering and computer science) and with verbal practice with “behavioral” questions, he became ready to start those interviews.

Similarly, new high school graduates have made their final college choices, so now it’s time for orientation.

Parents, expect potentially heightened friction with your new grads. They know they are preparing to leave home.

That means separating from you, which can be scary.

Because you want to enjoy your senior year when you’re playing varsity sports, co-heading committees and running with friends in that finale to high school.

Billy Busch of the William K. Busch Brewing Co. is making a name for himself in the beer industry – and in doing so, is writing the next chapter in the story of one of the most prominent brewing families in the world.

“

Y

ou know what? Anyone who wants to try a Kräftig Light, give ’em one on me,” Billy Busch tells the waitress at Hammerstone’s. The Soulard bar is filled with regular diners and professionals taking their lunch breaks on a sunny day, and many eagerly accept the offer of free beer.

The president and chief executive officer of the William K. Busch Brewing Co. smiles. He loves doing this, he says, especially at neighborhood joints like Hammerstone’s.

“We’re enjoying company, having a good talk, the food’s good, I’m enjoying a beer, and I can promote it while sitting here,” Busch says. “That’s what it’s all about – building those relationships.”

And he should know. As a great-grandson of Adolphus Busch, the founder of beer powerhouse Anheuser-Busch, and a son of August A. “Gussie” Busch, he grew up learning from generations of family members who knew not only how to brew hops with heart but also how to show that beer could be part of everyday people’s lives.

Now Busch is putting those lessons to work for Kräftig, the beer brand he launched through his brewing company in 2011. Kräftig Lager and Kräftig Light are all-natural American premium lagers made with only four ingredients: Hallertau hops, known to be the finest from Germany; two- and six-row barley; a proprietary robust yeast; and pure water. With Kräftig, Busch aims to increase the quality and flavor for a light lager that beer enthusiasts can enjoy while relaxing in their favorite bar as well as at home.

“We don’t add grain or cereal adjuncts,” Busch says.

“We don’t do corn syrup, preservatives, food colors, foam enhancers or industrial enzymes – which, believe it or not, there are a lot of beers that put that in there.

We beat our competition regularly when it comes to the flavor and quality of our beer.”

Indeed, Kräftig has been racking up awards since its launch, especially this year. In recent months, the lager has already earned gold and silver medals at the Denver International Beer Competition, a silver medal at the New York City International Beer Competition and a bronze medal at the Los Angeles International Beer Competition. And in 2016, Kräftig set a major record

by taking home gold in its fifth consecutive year at the International U.S. Open Beer Championship – the first brewery ever to hit that mark. Quite appropriately, kräftig is German for “strong.”

“These are very prestigious competitions because they’re blind-tasted by professional judges,” Busch says.

“I’m very, very proud that we’ve won the U.S. Open that many times. There are a lot of international beers that are entered into the U.S. Open, and we’re an American beer, an American company. To win that five times in a row makes me very proud.”

Busch can easily draw the line between his careful craft of Kräftig and what he’s drafted from his

ancestors. As a member of one of the most prominent beer baron families in the world, Busch soaked up plenty of business acumen watching his father, Gussie, expand the world-renowned Anheuser-Busch beer empire to theme parks and sports teams and helping his mother welcome guests like Frank Sinatra and John Wayne, plus a host of athletes and U.S. presidents to the family mansion at Grant’s Farm in south St. Louis County. Billy Busch later became an A-B distributor and wholesaler before selling that business before the company’s buyout by InBev. “The beer business is such a relationship business, and that’s what my dad and mom were so great at

doing,” Busch says.

Busch gained much more than just business insight at Grant’s Farm, though: That’s also where he fell in love with his future wife, Christi. Along with a gaggle of brothers and sisters, Busch grew up baling hay, building fences and taking care of the hundreds of animals on the farm’s 198-acre wildlife preserve and 22 acres of private property. While training elephants Bud and Mickey for performances during the 1987 season, he noticed a young woman working with the monkeys.

Before long, he asked Christi out on a date, and they married several years later. Now Christi and their seven children influence the William K. Busch Brewing Co. and even pitch in (well, the kids who are over 21, anyway).

“It’s really a family beer business; I have my family who’s all-in with me,” Busch says. “They love it, and if we can make a go of this, we can keep that Busch brewing tradition alive. It’s been well worth the effort and everything that it’s cost.”

Kräftig has shown steady yearly growth since its launch in 2011, and now Busch’s company sells its lagers throughout Missouri, Illinois, Kansas and Texas, with an eye on future calculated expansion. Busch also is hoping to open his own Kräftig brewery in St. Louis sometime this year (the lager is currently brewed in Wisconsin) and is scouting locations this spring. He admits that being the family’s new beer baron is hard work – especially with such a grand legacy to live up to – but he’s having the time of his life making it all come together.

“When I see people really enjoying a Kräftig and talking about how good it is, it’s one of the best feelings there is – it truly is,” Busch says. “I didn’t realize it when I was growing up, because I was part of this alreadyestablished company. Now that I’m doing it on my own with my family, when I hear people say they really love this beer and are happy that we’re continuing the Busch tradition in St. Louis, it’s another driving force that helps me keep going.”

Volunteer Honored

‌T

he time again has come to tee up and drive some golf news down the fairway.

In the offseason, the United States Golf Association honored Jayne Watson of Town and Country for more than three decades of service as a volunteer. She also earned the 2017 Joe Dey Award.

The USGA has presented that award annually since 1996 to recognize an individual’s meritorious service to the game as a volunteer. It bears the name of Joseph C. Dey Jr., who served as the association’s executive director from 1934 to 1969, before serving as the initial commissioner of the PGA Tour.

Watson first became involved with the USGA in 1987 and served as an early expert in both the USGA Course Rating System and the USGA Handicap System.

Her course-rating knowledge earned her a place on the first USGA Course Rating Committee, and she’s rated hundreds of courses in Missouri and Illinois alike.

“When I got the call telling me I was chosen for the Joe Dey Award, I thought it was a return call about a course rating question from a few days prior,” Watson says. “I went on and on before the caller explained why they were calling, and it took a minute for me to process it. I was in shock – and still am. This award means a lot to me, and it is very gratifying that the USGA recognizes my efforts in this way.”

Metropolitan Open The 12th Metropolitan Open Championship will have a new date this summer.

The tournament, which will take place at the Country Club of St. Albans on the Lewis & Clark Course, will run from June 14 to 16.

The Country Club of St. Albans promises to be busy in 2017. The club will host the PGA Junior Championships, boys and girls, in July, which played a part in moving that 2017 date. However, with the Web.com event in Springfield returning to June, it seemed appropriate to move the open ahead of that competition again.

A full field will be 156 players. Amateurs who are members of MAGA with a USGA handicap index of 1.4 or below are eligible, and professionals from around the country will form the field.

St. Louis amateurs did well last year. Skip Berkmeyer and Sam Migdal tied for Low Amateur honors, with Alex Cusumano as the only other amateur to survive the cut. Migdal went on to be named the 2016 Metropolitan Player of the Year.

Among the winners of the U.S. Girls’ Junior, five have gone on to win the U.S. Women’s Open, six have won the U.S. Women’s Amateur and 27 have earned 300 LPGA titles, including Mickey Wright, with 82 victories.

Wright also competed at Glen Echo in the mid1960s, winning a title in the St. Louis Open. The event charges no admission fee.

n March, a dining destination featuring eclectic contemporary American cuisine quietly opened in St. Louis’s Lafayette Square neighborhood.

Soon, reportedly, Polite Society – the restaurant and bar in question – will hold a grand opening to debut its lunch menu, but for now, visitors can enjoy dinner with drinks or weekend brunch in a decidedly neighborhood-influenced atmosphere.

Polite Society comes from co-owners Brian Schmitz and Jonathan Schoen, who met in the early 2000s working at Bar Italia. Since then, the two have collectively compiled a culinary résumé that includes running and consulting for several area businesses.

To name a few, Schoen helped open Eleven Eleven Mississippi, worked with Basso and owned local restaurant Savor; Schmitz, meanwhile, helped develop Lucha as well as local venue Sol, which also featured an event space and coffee shop, the Grind.

Over the course of their friendship and various professional projects, the duo exchanged ideas for what their ideal place would be. When the space that previously held Ricardo’s Italian Cafe became available, they decided to bring their concept to life.

“We wanted to create a place that we thought we both needed more of – where it’s safe to expect that everyone will take into account other people’s tastes, interests and sensitivities,” Schmitz says. “It’s an environment that defaults to consideration and building a ‘polite society.’”

Travis Hebrank, who also comes from Scape, runs the bar program as beverage director. Chris Kryzsik, formerly of Blood & Sand, serves as the sous chef.

“We have a balance of items that are both elegant and accessible,” Futrell says. “We also tried to design the menu to be very inclusive of items that we could do gluten-free without sacrificing quality.”

“We have really talented, well-intentioned people focused on putting the tastes and interests of the community front and center,” Schmitz says. “Our only internal barometer is constant improvement. If folks like us now, they’ll enjoy it even more in the future.”

‌Story: Student Jason Kemp attends a college creative writing class taught by an English professor named Naomi Orozoco-Wallace.

When Jason reads aloud his short story about a student who brings a gun to class and begins shooting other students and terrorizing his teacher, Orozoco-Wallace becomes alarmed.

The setting of Jason’s story, it seems, sounds very much like her own class. His descriptions of the other students match students in the real creative writing class, the shooter sounds very much like Jason, and the teacher seems a match for Orozoco-Wallace. When Jason’s story sparks fear and alarm in other students as well as OrozocoWallace, she reports the incident to her dean, Davis Herring, who also happens to be her lover.

While Herring remains sympathetic and concerned, he cautions Orozoco-Wallace that she may need more tangible evidence before kicking Jason out of class, which is her goal. She, conversely, advises Herring to expel Jason.

When Orozoco-Wallace confronts Jason and explains her fearful concerns about his story’s subject matter, he warns her against attempting to censor him. Furthermore, Jason accuses Orozoco-Wallace of prejudice against his race and gender, and threatens legal action against the university if she pursues action against him.

Is the professor overreacting? Are certain subjects off-limits in her class, and if so, why didn’t she advise her students about that before the assignment? Is Jason mentally unstable, and does he pose a real threat to the safety of his classmates? Or is he actually an “honor student” whose talent for writing includes controversial material?

Highlights: The Tesseract Theatre Company, which strives to “tell big stories small,” succeeds in a major way with this arresting, provocative and challenging play by Michael Erickson, being given a “preproduction” in this presentation.

Other Info: Tesseract specializes in presenting new works, noting that it takes on “big issues that we feel our audiences want to see discussed onstage and produce those stories in a small, intimate setting.” That ambition works very well in this disturbing, thoughtprovoking two-act drama.

Erickson wisely keeps his story focused on just four characters, the three mentioned previously along with a character named Donna Hellinger, another campus administrator who’s vying with Herring for the open provost position. With a small but capable cast, director Taylor Gruenloh emphasizes the subtleties in Erickson’s script that can keep an audience guessing as to Jason’s true motives.

Although Orozoco-Wallace is indisputably accomplished in her field, the amount of time between her last book and the one she hopes will bring tenure leaves her vulnerable. Exacerbating that vulnerability is her relationship with the married Herring, who promises he loves her but isn’t willing to leave his wife to make that love more convincing.

Rios delivers a well-honed performance, conveying Orozoco-Wallace’s logical apprehension about Jason and his alarming story while showing how the “adult” teacher can be manipulated by her cunning, dangerous student.

Bradley Rohlf projects the creepiness and anger of the mysterious Jason, whose tragic family background may not be as authentic as it sounds. Rohlf delivers a chilling performance, showing Jason’s asocial personality, as well as the hostility and resentment that propels him to such a dangerous level.

Katie Palazzola’s set design involves two tiers, with the stage serving as the upper level, which includes Herring’s office and a projection screen where a key plot element appears, and the floor for some confrontations between teacher and student.

Honor Student, a well-constructed and cleverly conveyed drama, pushes a number of contemporary hot buttons while delivering the goods as a spooky thriller. Your assignment: See this cautionary tale – and make your own judgment.

ed Car Wine’s estate vineyard occupies the northwest corner of King Ridge Road above the coastline of California’s Sonoma County, approximately 1,000 feet above sea level.

That coast forms an American Viticultural Area, or AVA, altogether separate from Sonoma proper, with a microclimate driven by the

Pacific Ocean and high elevations. As such, the vineyard enjoys more clement influences from the coast and fog rolling inland, making a perfect setting for growing cooler-climate grapes – and as a result, Red Car focuses on pinot noir, chardonnay, rosé and cool-climate syrah and grenache.

A new addition to the vintage under review involves 40 percent from the Mendocino Ridge AVA – also high-elevation vineyards (2,000 feet), adding even more acidity to the blend.

This much acidity in a California rosé, in fact, seems a real treat.

Now, rosé can be made in several different ways, most notably in the saignée process, wherein a winemaker concentrates a pinot noir by bleeding off the initial juice, leaving the wine to keep gaining color and tannins from the skins still in contact with the remaining juice.

Red Car feels passionate about rosé and does a true vin gris-style, in which grapes are harvested at low Brix (the scale of sugar-insolution density), usually around 21 degrees for acidity. Removal of the grapes’ skins follows immediately through cluster pressing for a pale

So – let’s talk about rosé and how wine devotees here are finally drinking the “pink stuff.” Many people, I think, associate pink wine with sweetness and white zinfandel. The Europeans have been drinking rosé of one sort or another for many decades, though, and it’s always been a great everyday wine for sipping or serving with meals.

Also, rosé sales have grown in leaps and bounds in the last 10 years, and distributors now are sourcing globally. Rosé has one foot in each world, red and white, which means it will try twice as hard to please you! As Julia Child would say, “Rosés can be served with anything.”

ad the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (who, as “Lewis Carroll,” wrote a book or two about a gamine named Alice) focused his fancies on three dimensions instead of two, he might have created a wonderland like Laumeier Sculpture Park, now celebrating the ruby anniversary of its incorporation.

According to Lauren Kistner, the park’s marketing and communications manager, that celebration officially started last July 1, proclaimed “Laumeier Sculpture Park Day” by the St. Louis County Council and Sunset Hills, the municipality graced by the park’s presence; it concludes this fall.

“Throughout the past year, we’ve incorporated Laumeier history into a wide variety of our events and programs,” Kistner says. For example, the park’s free walking tours last summer took as their themes Laumeier’s first, second, third and fourth decades; also, throughout the anniversary year, the park’s Facebook and Instagram feeds have been featuring historical highlights as part of a weekly “Throwback Thursday” campaign.

“Perhaps most importantly, we opened a new indoor exhibition on April 1, featuring a selection of works from Laumeier’s extensive collection of preparatory drawings, prints, works on paper, collages and photographs in celebration and commemoration of the anniversary,” Kistner continues regarding an attraction open daily through July 16 in Laumeier’s Whitaker Foundation Gallery at the Adam Aronson Fine Arts Center.

“Drawing From the Collection: 40 Years at Laumeier” features works by internationally renowned artists, including Vito Acconci, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Andy Goldsworthy, Donald Judd, Cildo Meireles, David Nash, Valeska Soares, Ernest Trova, Ursula von Rydingsvard and Meg Webster, among many others.

The collection – ah, yes, the collection. Encapsulating its wonders, one can’t help suspecting, might stymie even Dodgson.

Consider, for instance, the subversive and minimalist wit of Ahmet Ögüt’s This area is under 23 hour video and audio surveillance, 2009, and the chilling prescience of Jonathan Borofsky’s Man With Briefcase at #2968443, 1986, both of which recall certain of the reverend’s pseudo-pataphysical japes.

(“[T]ied round the neck of the bottle was a paper label,” he informs readers early in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, “with the words ‘DRINK ME’ beautifully printed on it in large letters.”)

Also, like Dodgson’s first classic and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, Laumeier’s holdings include a gnomic feline, albeit one lacking a Cheshire grin: Niki de Saint Phalle’s Ricardo Cat, 1999, a splendid blend of meow and mosaic.

Still, among the park’s manifold wonders, Kistner says, arguably two constitute the most popular for children and adults alike: Alexander Liberman’s The Way, 1972-1980, and Tony Tasset’s Eye, 2007.

“The Way is comprised of 18 salvaged, steel oil tanks, welded together and painted a bright cadmium red,” she notes. “The monumental artwork, easily the largest single sculpture in the park, dominates Laumeier’s Way Field and is certainly a visitor favorite.

“Eye is hands-down the ‘most selfied’ sculpture in the park. Modeled after the artist’s own eye, the sculpture measures more than 35 feet in circumference and appears to be watching over Laumeier’s Ferring Family Foundation Museum lawn.”

Fans of Tasset’s work, she adds, can look forward to the acquisition of a new piece by him, the 12-foot-tall Deer, 2015, to be installed late this summer.

When asked to name her own personal favorite piece at the park, Kistner mentions Robert Lobe’s The Palm at the End of the Parking Lot, 1995, “an aluminum-encased walnut tree trunk located in Laumeier’s south lawn. I love the mix of natural and metallic materials used in the piece – it actually really speaks to my personal style. As I’ve said before, it almost feels like this particular tree is all dressed up for a party!”

Kistner briefly dwells on the challenges facing the park during the past four decades, some of them common to nonprofit arts organizations, others peculiar to Laumeier.

“We are proud to be the largest visual arts organization in St. Louis County – but our specific location, tucked among the quiet neighborhoods of Sunset Hills, can be a challenge for many reasons,” she relates.

our recommended visitor sculpture interactions is an ongoing challenge. We strive to strike a balance as we encourage visitors to engage with the artworks appropriately but discourage climbing – for the safety of our visitors and the sculptures. … ” As Laumeier’s greatest challenge at the moment, Kistner cites raising awareness of its private-public partnership with the county parks system.

“Laumeier Sculpture Park is considered a St. Louis County park, and we receive in-kind support that includes technology, staffing, cleaning and maintenance of the buildings and grounds, and so forth,” Kistner explains.

“However, Laumeier is also a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that must raise more than $1 million annually to support our mission-based work, including the cleaning and maintenance of the artworks and the presentation of education programs, temporary exhibitions and public events.”

Laumeier’s unique model can complicate raising funds from individuals, corporations and foundations.

“For example,” Kistner says, “many locals don’t understand why we charge admission for our annual art fair on Mother’s Day weekend – when in fact, the art fair is our single largest annual fundraising activity for the nonprofit.”

She also foresees raising awareness as the park’s biggest future challenge.

“Laumeier enjoys many different audiences, including local families, regional tourists, and international artists and art patrons,” she says. “Our small, dedicated staff works hard to present quality experiences at the park, but we need to continue to raise awareness of our existence and location; our mission, events and programs; the breadth and depth of our collection as an accredited art museum; and the critical importance of financial support.”

Devotees of the midcounty wonderland can only hope that Laumeier’s team succeeds in such outreach and that it enjoys at least another four decades to help visitors approximate the finale of the poem that ends Through the Looking-Glass: “Ever drifting down the stream – / Lingering in the golden gleam – / Life, what is it but a dream?”

For an institution as electric as Laumeier Sculpture Park, four decades constitutes an eternity, so narrowing down all the organizational highlights to a few headlines can be daunting.

“I can’t say for sure that these are the most significant moments in Laumeier’s history, but they are definitely all noteworthy moments,” marketing and communications manager Lauren Kistner notes.

“In 1968, Mrs. Matilda Laumeier bequeathed the first 72 acres of the future Laumeier Sculpture Park to St. Louis County in memory of her husband, Henry Laumeier,” Kistner says.

Local artist Ernest Trova, in 1976, gifted 40 works of art with an estimated market value of $1 million to the county to form a sculpture park and gallery, Kistner relates, with Laumeier Sculpture Park opening as part of the county parks and recreation system on July 7, 1976.

Laumeier was incorporated in 1977 as a private-public partnership between the nonprofit arts organization and the county parks department.

“In 1987, Laumeier held its first annual art fair … ,” Kistner continues. “Also in 1987, Laumeier first earned its accreditation from the American Association of Museums … At that time, Laumeier was the only contemporary sculpture park in the nation to be so recognized.”

The park’s first Fire & Ice event, a winter solstice spectacle, took place in 1988 and drew 12,000 visitors, according to Kistner.

In 1989, Laumeier debuted its Summer Art Camp program, which Kistner calls “still one of the organization’s most successful programs today.”

In 2011, according to Kistner, USA Today listed Laumeier among the “10 Great Places to See Art Enhance Nature.”

The National Endowment for the Arts, in 2012, awarded Laumeier a $100,000 Art Works grant (with a 1:1 match) for the conservation of Donald Judd’s Untitled from 1984, says Kistner. The two-year, $200,000-plus project concluded with the reinstallation of that work on the park’s south lawn.

Finally, in 2015, Laumeier closed its first major capital campaign, “Sculpting the Future,” which, Kistner notes, culminated “in the renovation of the Laumeiers’ 1917 Estate House into the Kranzberg Education Lab and the construction of the new Adam Aronson Fine Arts Center.”
