Passion infuses Kathy Gordon Israel’s craftsmanship at the Chesterfield-based Accent on Cabinets, LN contributor Drew Gieseke notes, and just a few views of that craftsmanship make it easy to appreciate the peerlessness of that passion.

THE TRIO Although at a glance it may recall plates neglected in the average bachelor’s kitchen sink, this quirky agate side table (curated this week, as ever, by LN’s go-to gal for home furnishings, Nancy Robinson) comes from Portugal’s MURANTI.

EDITOR LET’S BE HONEST HERE: OUTDOOR EVENTS IN THE METRO AREA in late spring and throughout the summer can be a gamble. But somewhere amid the humidity and the heat (as well as the occasional torrential thunderstorm), there will be the most beautiful day in the world. Although we might not be able to predict the weather, we can predict having the perfect hairstyle for any summer soirée with the area’s newest blowout bar, which opened across from Plaza Frontenac this month: Drybar. Drybar offers clients an array of styles – all aptly named after cocktails – and sells a variety of popular hair products to help keep that blown-out glow. LN contributor Julia Cain spoke with the owner, St. Louis native Caroline Morehead, about good hair in this week’s Style feature, starting on p. 43 Drybar might just be your new summer style secret! If you are planning on throwing an event but can’t decide on a venue, look no further than this week’s Arts & Culture feature, starting on p. 62. Our own copy editor and staff writer, Bryan A. Hollerbach, profiles the artistic duo of Pat and Carol Schuchard. The couple work together to breathe new life into old and historic area architecture – making it something everyone can enjoy again! These spots include the Boo Cat Club and Das Bevo, so for our readers that love a little nostalgia or love to plan a good party, this feature is for you! All the best,

Aging With Grace By Amanda Dahl | Photo courtesy of Mari de Villa
A
pproaching 60 years of age in March 2020, Mari de Villa wears its years with a grace and polish that breathe new life into all who visit. Serving the families of St. Louis and its surrounding communities has been the Wiesehan family’s true pleasure. “Every day, we commit to providing the best care,” president Fred Wiesehan says. “Caring for the guests and families of Mari de Villa has been the life’s work for the management and many of our staff.” The team at the senior living community proves it, too, with numerous members having spent a decade or more, even up to 35-plus years, of their careers at the unique community, located in Town and Country on a 21-acre campus. Mari de Villa’s levels of care allow guests to age in place, from independent living in the Villa Estates to 24-hour care, skilled nursing, memory care and skilled rehab in Villa West, Villa East and the Waterford building. “As one ages, a resident’s needs can increase,” Wiesehan explains. “We adapt to these changes with little disruption to their lives and provide this care at an allinclusive rate.”
Caring for the guests and families of Mari de Villa has been the life’s work for the management and many of our staff. – Fred wiesehan
That pricing for Villas East and West, and the Waterford building, also accounts for all meals, including snacks; daily housekeeping and personal laundry; amenities such as cable television and Wi-Fi; weekday transportation, though some restrictions may apply; 24-hour nursing care; and all activities and social hours; and much more. The Villa West, Villa East and Waterford communities provide a warm, caring atmosphere, with 24-hour nursing care. The Villa Estates, located on a separate part of the expansive campus, can be customized to the preferred style of each resident. These independent living units showcase deluxe appointments, such as hardwood flooring, granite counters and stainless steel appliances. “The Villa Estates club holds regularly scheduled dinners, parties and brunches,” Wiesehan details. “This past Mother’s Day, we hosted 140 guests and their families.” From complimentary water aerobics classes, wellness classes and bridge clubs to book clubs and guest speakers, residents find much to enjoy. A Mercedes motor coach extends social opportunities with trips to The Fabulous Fox Theatre; the Missouri Botanical Garden, with a private, narrated tram; Grant’s Farm, also with a private, narrated tram; the Missouri History Museum; and numerous popular restaurants. “The senior living landscape can be very confusing for families who are trying to navigate through their options,” Wiesehan notes. “Here at Mari de Villa, we welcome the opportunity to tour families and address any questions. We are confident you will be pleased with what you see.” It appears all birthday wishes are coming true at Mari de Villa, so drink a toast to the next 60 years! We are so grateful to serve as the event co-chairs for this year’s Table Tops Spring Event! Over the last 16 years, we’ve gathered in this beautiful room to spend time with our friends, to admire these intricately designed tables and, most importantly, to give back to St. Louis Children’s Hospital. We are continually amazed by the support the community has shown at this event to make an impact on the lives of the patients and families at Children’s.

Bill III and Ira DeWitt
BREAKTHROUGH VIP RECEPTION Photos and story by Christina Kling-Garrett
B
ill III and Ira DeWitt hosted a VIP reception for the opening of the movie Breakthrough, the true story of John Smith, at The Chase Park Plaza St. Louis Cinemas. In early 2015, then 14-year-old Smith and his friends were walking on the ice of Lake Sainte Louise when the ice broke and the boy spent 15 minutes underwater. Because Smith went without a heartbeat for nearly an hour, doctors didn’t believe he would survive. At his bedside, his mother, Joyce, began to pray, and within minutes, Smith’s pulse returned. At this special VIP reception, guests met Smith and his mother, while enjoying Champagne and popcorn. Martin Kilcoyne of television station KTVI emceed, interviewing both Bill DeWitt and Smith before the movie. Guests were encouraged to light a votive candle from Ira DeWitt’s candle line, SAINT, benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; each candle, named after a saint, is blessed with holy oil and has a prayer coin embedded in its bottom.
My wife, Ira, has a line of scented prayer candles, SAINT candles, and was asked to partner with the film Breakthrough since there is a logical connection with the ‘power of prayer’ theme of both projects. We were honored to be a part of this incredible story – especially given the St. Louis setting of the film. Breakthrough is a great film that will definitely make you think twice. FUN & PLAYFUL

ongtime clients of Julie Abner came to her with a dream – to introduce more colors and patterns into their new home. Abner had worked with the Ladue residents on their previous home, for which they’d selected a fairly neutral color palette. On the new home, however, Abner’s clients wanted to add more interesting aspects and pizazz. This plan included special touches for their 8- and 10-year-old daughters. “The client wanted to bring some youthfulness into the overall house,” Abner says. “That resonated in this space for her daughter.” The goal was to create a bedroom that felt young and lively, but could evolve into a more mature environment as the young girl got older. The 8-year-old even had some input during the design process, like helping to select the colors and patterns. “We really love the drapery with the bold floral pattern and the geometric pattern of the wallpaper,” Abner says. “It’s not every day you get to have so much fun with color and patterns.”

K
athy Gordon Israel turned a home-designing side gig into a thriving, full-time cabinetry business with clients across the country. Her trick, she says, isn’t a secret – it’s passion. Founded in 2005, Israel’s Chesterfield-based home remodeling company, Accent on Cabinets, emphasizes high-quality, custom-designed cabinetry. Whether for the home in general or the kitchen or bath in particular, the company works closely with clients and contractors to source the right cabinets for the right uses. With a background in public relations and marketing, Israel draws inspiration for Accent on Cabinets from her experiences in college, where she spent five years working with her aunt, the owner of a Massachusetts kitchen and bath company. “I did design for free while working from home after starting a family, and I was like, ‘What the hell, I should be doing this!’” Israel says of her first passion projects. “Doing free jobs led to referrals of full-time work. [We kept] a company open during the market crash. We were never slow during that time – that says a lot.” A commitment to quality plays a central role in Israel’s business, where she serves as owner and designer. Accent on Cabinets carries three lines of products, each custom-constructed in the United States with American-grown lumber, which means shorter shipment turnaround times than those on supplies from overseas – and no price impacts because of sometimes-unreliable international tariffs. Better yet, two of the cabinetmakers, Plato Woodwork from Minnesota and Showplace Wood Products from Harrisburg, South Dakota, have been operating for more than 150 years combined. “We have lines that have been doing business for more than a century, and you can’t get any better than that,” Israel says. “All of our cabinet lines have lifetime warranties and a low carbon footprint.” Clients first meet with Israel and her team of two to talk about needs and discuss the budget before setting and managing expectations. Accent on Cabinets designs the space using CAD (computer-aided design) software, 3D renderings so clients can visualize their updated rooms. As many of them concoct their dream living spaces, Israel is thinking short- and long-term, particularly with resale value. Once all needs are met and a design is decided, pricing begins. “Staying within their budget is huge,” Israel says. “I can create a phenomenal kitchen if people have unlimited budget, but budget and especially space are important, as well. What can we do to get you the kitchen of your dreams, have resale value, and you’re going to love it?” Part of customers’ loving the design of their new space involves being able to see the samples for themselves – and feeling confident their new kitchen is unique. For that reason, Israel prides herself on her company’s customer interaction. “Everything is based on customer satisfaction, and listening to their needs and expectations is huge,” she says. After all production details are confirmed, the cabinets are ordered, constructed by suppliers to client specifications and shipped for installation. In some cases, Accent on Cabinets is brought onto a preexisting project to consult on cabinets, and on other projects, it’s simply sourcing cabinets, but the company primarily works directly with clients. “As people live in a space, they develop certain habits as to how they function in their house,” Israel says. “We work with both people who’ve lived in their homes for some time and are looking to remodel and those who are needing help with spatial planning for new construction.” Accent on Cabinets uses relationships with local contractors, builders, architects and more during the installation process – each time-tested, as Israel doesn’t assign projects to people she’s never worked with. This expertise has helped the company flourish since its founding nearly 15 years ago. Now, Accent on Cabinets regularly works with clients who live in other cities around the country – and even outside the country, like in the Bahamas. In the fall, Accent on Cabinets looks to add another feature to its expanding national business: virtual kitchen design. This visualization tool shows customers real-time renderings of their new kitchen superimposed on the current design, all by simply holding up a phone. It’s the kind of asset that will elevate the experience for clients and company alike. From concept and budgeting to construction and completion, a genuine sense of passion and pride lifts Accent on Cabinets above so many similar companies. Yes, the business’ products are premium and its team is experienced, but there’s no substituting working with a firm that cares about you and about your home. Which is why it comes as no surprise that when asked whether she’s especially proud of any recent project, Israel doesn’t hesitate: “All of them. Seriously.”
Kitchens and bathrooms become beautiful new spaces with help from an area cabinet specialist and room remodeler.

esiding in Richmond Heights, this handsome Hampton Park Tudor Revival proves a head-turner, with a stone and timber-framed faรงade. The historic home, designed by Edward Nolte and Fred Nauman and built in 1927 by George F. Bergfeld, offers beaucoup places to park your car, from the tuck-under and detached garages to additional spots along the drive. Upon entry, a checkered floor leads you past the wraparound stair, with a detailed runner, into the impressively designed interior, which highlights historic and artistic touches found throughout the residence. Consider the stone walls of the sunroom or the archways and stained glass of the medievalinspired lower level. Delightful details abound, from the walk-in cedar closet found in one of two attic areas to the triumphant millwork of the living and dining rooms. Now, take your tea to the screened porch, where you can overlook the picturesque backyard of this dreamy abode.

A national salon with the signature model of “no color, no cuts, just blowouts” opens its first location here.
44 May 24, 2019 | LadueNews.com
W
hen Caroline Morehead returned to her hometown of St. Louis, she longed for the great hair days she had while living in Dallas. She wasn’t affected by the Midwestern humidity – instead, she missed her favorite styling salon, Drybar. What’s a girl desperate for good hair to do? Why, open her own franchise, of course. Missouri’s first Drybar, a nationwide blowout salon known for its shiny hairstyles and sought-after yellow tools, opened May 16 at the former POPtions! space in Ladue’s The Village at Schneithorst’s. And that location is just the start, explains Morehead, who envisions multiple Drybar salons peppering the metro area in the future. After graduating from Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School, Morehead moved to Dallas to attend Southern Methodist University. She double-majored in journalism and sport management, and eventually used her degree to begin working for the Dallas Stars hockey team. “I went to Drybar when I was in college down there, but I really started going religiously once I was in that young professional business category,” she says. “I would go and love it … It was 45 minutes to myself to get pampered, know my hair would look good the rest of the week so I wouldn’t have to waste time doing that [and] get so much work done.” When Morehead returned to St. Louis with her fiancé and co-owner, fellow St. Louis native Chris Wideman, she missed the Drybar experience. “I told Chris, ‘I think a Drybar would do so well here,’” Morehead says. “That’s the one thing I feel like I miss the most from Dallas.” He finally convinced her to put in a franchise application, and to Morehead’s surprise, she heard back the next day. “From there, it was a lot of hard work,” she says. “It was Chris and [me] doing calls just about every week.” This included flying to Irvine, California, for an interview with the Drybar founder, as well as a day working the Newport, California, store for a firsthand look at salon ownership. “Seeing it from behind the bar was really enlightening, and I loved it,” Morehead says. Drybar operates under the tagline “no color, no cuts, just blowouts.” It offers eight signature adult styles, all named after cocktails – plus one kid-friendly version aptly named the Shirley Temple. Although prices range by location, the blowout styles cost $45 here for any length of hair (and an additional $20 for extensions). The salon offers a signature blowout called the Straight Up and a beachy-wave look called the Mai Tai. For formal occasions, there are the Old Fashioned, with supple old Hollywood-style waves, or the volume-focused Southern Comfort. Braids can also be added to any look for an additional price, and up-dos (called Uptinis) are also available. “Our big thing at Drybar is promoting happiness and confidence,” Morehead says. “Although it seems
We are so excited to bring something of this national caliber back to St. Louis. – Caroline Morehead
very minimal in the scheme of life … , you go in, you leave and your hair looks amazing. It makes everyone feel good. It’s a nice little boost in your day.” The Drybar experience starts with an appointment, either made in advance or booked as a walk-in. (Appointments can be made online, using the Drybar app, or by phone through a call center; Morehead mentions the salon has no phone because of the noise from hair dryers and music.) Next, a client meets with the stylist for a consultation and selects a style from the lookbook. Because Drybar styles are designed for all hair textures and lengths, the lookbook portrays a variety of individuals with each style to help the guest imagine the end result. After that comes washing the hair, followed by the strategic blow-dry and style while the client sips complimentary Champagne or coffee and watches rom-coms on the TVs in the salon. In roughly 45 minutes, the client’s hairdo is done and ready to be worn for up to a week. Regulars may want to consider the Barfly Membership ($80 a month), which comes with discounts and two blowouts per month. In addition to its signature styles, Drybar has developed a cult following for its hair products. The Hot Toddy protects against heat, the On the Rocks is a scalp scrub, and the popular Triple Sec adds texture. (As with the hair styles, the branding here cheekily plays up the second syllable of the company’s name.) With all products and tools used in the salon available for sale, a client can find his or her perfect style and buy the items to re-create it at home. Offering Drybar’s signature styles at the new location was critical, Morehead explains. “[Because] there are 120 locations of Drybar nationwide, they want you to be able to get a blowout in New York or Miami or Chicago and have the same experience you have in St. Louis,” she says. Those who have visited Drybar locations in other states will feel right at home in this matching salon, which features nine styling chairs and a separate hair-washing room in its 1,200 square feet. “We are so excited to bring something of this national caliber back to St. Louis,” Morehead says of the opening. “The response so far has been really encouraging, and I think that comes from people being so supportive in the St. Louis area. I feel like St. Louis is very loyal, which is amazing – but also, a lot of people have traveled to Chicago or New York, and they’ve been to Drybars there. [The positive response] speaks to what Drybar has created.” Drybar St. Louis – Frontenac, 1580 S. A Scrambled Life
L
ife lessons come to us from many different sources – including nursery rhymes. Such rhymes (some made up by my parents, most derived from the usual sources, like Mother Goose) nurtured me as child. And one rhyme in particular has stayed with me all my life, a story of risk and failure – a lesson in how to respond when the worst happens, when things go to pieces and little or no hope remains in sight. I’m talking about the story of Humpty Dumpty, the anthropomorphic egg that tried to defy the odds and met with tragic results: “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,/Humpty Dumpty had a great fall./All the king’s horses and all the king’s men/Couldn’t put Humpty together again.” On the surface, this might seem a story about dismal failure. I disagree. The key word, to me, occurs last: again. To me, anyway, it positions Humpty as a risk-taker – bold, fearless, unrelenting. Humpty, I think, believed in setting stretch goals and knew well the potential for failure, but he refused to let it define him. Because of that, I see Humpty as the epitome of courage. Perched atop that wall, he almost surely had to deal with fear, knowing the stakes of his position to be high indeed – that he might fall. But this egg never let
the fear of turning into an omelet define him. How does Humpty’s tale (which dates from 1797 or before) relate to today’s world? Well, Humpty’s wall can serve as a simple metaphor for all the lofty aspirations we have – in life, marriage, business and other pursuits. Occupying a wall like Humpty’s involves vulnerability and much humility – because at any time, gravity might scramble everything. Now, we’ve all faced great challenges, whether the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, the diagnosis of an incurable ailment or some other calamity – leading to an unfortunate “fall” and accompanying fear, hopelessness and helplessness. At such times, I believe it helpful to turn to Humpty’s story. Yes, you may have fallen, and like Humpty, your life may appear to be shattered. But unlike Humpty, you can persevere when all hope seems lost. You can accept the reality that when you fall, the fall itself becomes part of the process of finding courage. In that regard, it seems integral to cultivate a support group better than Humpty’s “all the king’s horses and all the king’s men” – family and friends to help when everything seems scrambled. We’ve all occupied high walls and fallen many times, but if it weren’t for our own “king’s horses” and “king’s men,” righting our

lives would have been improbable if not impossible. Family and friends give us the confidence and endurance to keep on keeping on. When you fall from your own wall, strive to overcome such a turn and seek a new way forward. Find the resolve to put yourself back together again, unlike Humpty, and someday, just maybe, someone will write a rhyme about you.

By Dick Smothers I love 20 Minutes to Fitness. Here’s why. I get a special joy from the fact that I’m doing something for myself that I know is helping me become a stronger, more fit, 75-plus-year-old. I first came to 20 Minutes to Fitness in 2008, and it was like nothing I had ever experienced in my life. I had been around gyms for many years, and I was quite aware of all sorts of workout philosophies, but never this one. In and out in about 20 minutes? This I had to see. I saw it and I’m still here. In 2011, I embarked on an extended road trip in my RV that took me to the West Coast and points in between, and I couldn’t keep up my workout program. I didn’t pick it up again until 2 years later. I knew that I had lost some muscle mass and was curious to see how soon I could get it back. I was amazed! With every session I get stronger. My stronger body makes my life easier and more enjoyable. My trainer is an excellent coach, and I think accepts the fact that I like to talk while I’m working out. But that’s just how I do it. It’s not mandatory to be a motor mouth. I’ll ask her things like, “Did you add weight? How much? How much time did I do last time? How much time have I done so far? Is that all? You’re kidding. I don’t think I can do anymore!” She’ll say, “Yes you can, try one more.” I try, I do one more, and it is not easy, but quite often I find enough strength to do another one after that. That’s what it’s all about. That’s the genius of this program. I exhaust my muscle groups with a high weight for my ability and a low number of slow repetitions. Once a week. I don’t have to do three sets of ten, two to three times a week at the gym. This is a medically based, scientifically proven training program performed on unique specialized equipment with extremely knowledgeable coaches in a non-gym environment. I bike, swim, stand up paddle-board, dance, yoga, meditate, take naps and more. I live with a great sense of gratitude of the blessings God has given me. I don’t take anything for granted, including my muscles. Since I added “20 Minutes to Fitness” to my life, I’m doing just fine, thank you!!!!!

s an actress, Joan Lipkin has appeared in off-Broadway plays. As an activist, she has lobbied the mayor’s office to declare Voter Registration Day in the City of St. Louis. Motivated by ideas and change, community and making art, Lipkin supports some of her pro bono work through grants, residencies around the country, teaching and corporate work. She founded Dance the Vote, Women Centerstage!, Playback NOW! St. Louis and We ❤ Immigrants – among many other projects – and is known as a force for social justice. Internationally recognized as a trailblazing artist, Lipkin believes in a democracy of art. “Freedom of expression and access to the arts, both as a consumer and as an active participant, is a human right,” she says. “It is essential for both individual and collective well-being.” Lipkin doesn’t discriminate when it comes to various art forms: “I support all the arts. I go to the theater, the symphony, dance and museums. The arts speak to me. They are both a refuge and an inspiration.” A “creative” since childhood, she reminisces about carrying a little book bag with a sketch pad for drawing, pens for writing and a book for reading. “I always loved art,” she says. “I was an artistic child – it was just a question of where it would land!” After graduating from Webster Groves’ Webster University (then still Webster College) in 1975, Lipkin received her master’s degree in art history from Saint Louis University. She feels fortunate to be able to choose how to live her life, saying: “I love beautiful things and comfort, but I have prioritized for myself experiences, the people I want to serve and the creation of art. “My father was always suggesting lines of work I could pursue. But I questioned if I would be happy and feel that I was doing something meaningful in the world. So I stepped off a more conventional path and forged a very different one.” In doing so, Lipkin meshed her love of theater with her passion for civic engagement and social issues. In 1989, Lipkin founded St. Louis’ That Uppity Theatre Company, and of it, she says: “Our name reflects who we are: bold, brave, willing to step outside the status quo in order to instigate social change, promote civic dialogue and produce transformative theatrical art of the highest quality for people of all ages.” Under that troupe’s umbrella, in 1995, she co-founded The DisAbility Project with the late occupational therapist Fran Cohen. Composed of people with and without disabilities to model inclusion, the project creates original material about the culture of disability, has performed for more than 100,000 people and is represented in the permanent collection of the Missouri History Museum. Lipkin has been honored as a Diverse Business Leader by the St. Louis Business
Journal. Some of her numerous other awards and honors include the Sister Lucy Ruth Rawe Disability Activism Award, the Brotherhood Sisterhood Award, the ATHE Award for Leadership in Community-based Theatre and Civic Engagement, the Arts Innovator of the Year by the Arts & Education Council, the Visionary Award by Grand Center, the Woman of Worth Award and the Ethical Society’s Humanist of the Year. Lipkin, who spends a certain amount of time in New York, even does human rights work in Eastern Europe. Other current areas of focus for her include racial justice, reproductive choice, climate change, gun control, voting, and immigration. She has also worked with many different populations, including people with dementia and early-stage Alzheimer’s, women with cancer, people in recovery, women who have been sexually trafficked, survivors of suicide, supporters of reproductive choice, atrisk youths, communities of faith, college students and LGBTQ adults, youths and their families. She loves living in St. Louis, which she says is poised for change. “Our little city is absolutely hopping today,” she posts on Facebook on a sunny day in April. “So many wonderful activities, many of which are free or more affordable. We certainly do have a lot of wonderful cultural and community things going on for the city this size.” It should come as no surprise that Lipkin has once again been honored for her dedication to the arts and diversity in St. Louis. Her most recent honor, an inaugural Bravely Award, was presented in April “for women who exemplify courage.” Lipkin counts people of all socioeconomic groups as her friends. “Some of my friends are wealthy, and others are on food stamps,” she says. A voracious reader and a dog whisperer, she can put on lipstick flawlessly without a mirror and take a nap with a bird perched on her shoulder. Joan Lipkin is fearless. She is brave. She is a worthy recipient of the Bravely Award.
My father was always suggesting lines of work I could pursue. But I questioned if I would be happy and feel that I was doing something meaningful in the world. So I stepped off a more conventional path and forged a very different one.

Delightfully, yesterday’s hot rods can return once more to roar down the center line and burn rubber on today’s roadways.
N
o one is as rambunctious, rowdy, and audibly and visually impossible to ignore as hot-rodders. Hot rod culture is as vibrant as it is because those base-level emotions tug at the hearts and minds of car enthusiasts. Forget practicality, comfort and luxury; at some point, every car guy or gal fancies the idea of building a ride that’s the equivalent of a knockout punch. And there’s no option as iconic as the early ’30s Ford Coupe and Roadster. The ’34 Ford Coupe pictured is a perfect example. However, nothing you see is original. The hot rod industry is so robust that every part can be sourced new – not only does that remove issues of trying to find, fit and use rusty old parts, but also it gives the buyer nearly unlimited customization options. People often underestimate the level of skills and knowledge required to run a successful auto body shop. When a car is delivered with damage, there’s a lot more than just a shiny paint job – disassembly, sourcing new parts, reassembly and more.

Plus, body shops are expected to be able to repair any car that drives up: One day, it’s a Dodge SUV, and the next, it’s a BMW sedan. It’s this vast breadth of knowledge that prepares the team at Center Line Auto Body in House Springs to turn crates full of parts into polished and road-ready hot rods. So what’s it like to drive a car like this? First, there are more comforts than you might expect, including air conditioning, power windows, a power trunk, a stereo and a comfortable custom-upholstered interior. The automatic transmission is livable in traffic, and the ride is relatively compliant and forgiving. But any misconceptions of tameness are shattered when the 415-horsepower 347 Ford Stroker V-8 Crate Engine comes to life with straight headers dumping its full fury just outside the windows. Much of the driving experience is about that glorious note. Ample torque fed through the massive Mickey Thompson tires makes the car squat like a sprinter on the starting block. The chassis twist and a short wheelbase combined with nary a hint of traction control mean the driver better pay attention, or it may bite. Successfully harness what the car is capable of, however, and the satisfying adrenaline rush is your reward. The modern world is full of fast-without-fuss options, but with this, the fuss is the fun.
This isn’t a twisty road-carving machine – and with solid axles in both front and rear, you shouldn’t expect it to be. More “modern” chassis that use independent suspension setups are available, as is the addition of sway bars for more body control. Shock and spring rates can be chosen and tweaked with buyer input to match desired result, and with a handling tire and wheel package, there’s no reason to believe this 2,800-pound machine couldn’t hold its own through the curves. And really, that’s what hot-rodding is all about: creating something that fits your unique character. Multistage lime-green House of Kolor paint, no fenders and an exposed engine bay scream, “Look at me!” in this instance. But you can easily draw less attention by adding the fenders and a hood, and opting for a more subdued paint scheme. There are also options of changing the bodywork – perhaps an open cockpit roadster style, maybe the curves of a ’32 or ’33 Ford, even a ’41 Willys replica. Under the hood, a Ford powerplant is the proper option, but many less expensive and equally powerful options from Chevy exist. Why not a 707-horsepower Hellcat Crate Hemi Engine if you have the budget and desire? As much as Americans like hot rods, we also like options, and literally every component can be chosen to suit taste. Steve and Debbie Pilgram from Center Line Auto Body say a completed turnkey car can be built for starting as little as $45K, with the price increasing depending on style and options. From there, the world – as well as the open road – will be your oyster.

emoll’s Chop House, one of St. Louis’ oldest and most iconic family-owned restaurants, recently started anew in Westport Plaza. Originally located on North Grand Boulevard from 1927 to 1990, Kemoll’s then moved to the Metropolitan Square Building in downtown St. Louis; there it occupied first the lobby, then the 40th floor till January, when it again relocated to Maryland Heights and effectively rebranded. As its name establishes, the new iteration of this classic Italian restaurant features a chophouse-style menu alongside Italian mainstays, internationally inspired appetizers and grilled fish. “Over the years, we’ve had over 80 items on the menu at Kemoll’s,” owner Mark Cusumano says. “Out

of the top 10 best-selling items, eight were from the grill, and two of them were steaks. We decided to follow that trend while keeping our list of favorite appetizers and Italian dishes intact.” Kemoll’s remains an upscale dining destination, filling an 8,000-square-foot space with a contemporary, elegant design. A mixture of classic and modern aesthetics provides a lavish backdrop for quiet dinners, made possible thanks to tapestries, carpeting and other purposeful elements to help with acoustics. Embellishing the dining areas are antique gilded mirrors and historical family photos printed on stainless steel, including as a centerpiece a framed portrait of the family matriarch, Mrs. Joe Kemoll (née Gaetana Danna).

From the menu, guests can choose from longstanding favorites like veal Milanese, featuring a cutlet breaded in Kemoll’s breadcrumbs, sautéed in garlic butter and topped with tomatoes, basil, artichokes and Kalamata olives. The appetizer menu also carries over from the former menu, featuring highlights such as baked oysters, beef tenderloin brochettes and fried artichokes. Cusumano worked with executive chef Don Tadlock to develop a number of new items for the retooled menu. In addition to best-sellers such as filet mignon and strip steak, guests can enjoy additions including a 24-ounce certified Hereford beef cowboy rib-eye steak, a 16-ounce center-cut bone-in veal chop and a 10-ounce lobster tail. favorites and new offerings makes Kemoll’s a great spot to design a decadent dinner before catching I Now Pronounce from the New Jewish Theatre. Guests otherwise should take pains to visit the distinctive octagonal bar, which boasts a large selection of single-malt scotches and some exclusive bourbons. Bottled craft beer also is available alongside classic cocktails and wine by the glass and bottle. “We have at least 10 employees who have been here for 35 years or longer as well as an enthusiastic young staff that’s dedicated, conscientious and just a pleasure to work with,” Cusumano says. “It’s all about seeing everybody coming in and enjoying themselves. After 92 years, it’s like we’re starting a whole new life for Kemoll’s, and hopefully, we’ll go for another 92 years.”

Story: It’s a lovely day for a wedding. Adam and Nicole have invited their families and friends to share in this most solemn and joyous occasion, for which Nicole has requested that the rabbi who married her parents officiate at the ceremony. He does just that, even if he’s well beyond his peak years. So the event is off to a rocky start when the rabbi, coughing and stumbling about, suddenly keels over dead. Everything quickly goes south from there. Adam and Nicole bicker with each other, not even sure if they’re officially married yet since they hadn’t reached the “I do” part of the ceremony. Groomsman Dave thinks it’s an opportunity for him to try his smart-mouthed, stand-up comic act (funny to no one except him), while Adam’s other groomsman, Seth, has been rattled by the news of his wife’s infidelity and her chutzpah in wanting to bring her boyfriend to the reception. Bridesmaid Michelle has developed a crush on one of the EMT guys dispatched to remove the rabbi, and has invited him to be her date at the reception after he gets off work; meanwhile, the other bridesmaid, Eva, considers the day just another unfortunate circumstance in her lackluster life. As for the three flower girls? They’re having a grand time eavesdropping on adult conversations and running around, acting like little kids. Which is OK for them, but not so much for the adults who seem to make a bad situation hopelessly worse. As the day turns into night, the gathering continues on its disastrous path. Highlights: New Jewish Theatre closes its 2018-19 season with a hardworking production of this dark comedy by playwright Tasha Gordon-Solmon. Other Info: Gordon-Solmon has said she was inspired to write her show after being bored while attending a wedding. Inspiration comes in many forms, and she took that opportunity to imagine how terribly funny a wedding could be starting from a most unfortunate tragedy. There are so many problems with her script, though, that for some audience members, her brand of humor likely will strike the funny bone only rarely. It seems quite passive-aggressive, with the laughs too often resulting from mean-spirited characters caught in their ugliest moments. The result is a shaggy story that tries way too hard to be humorous. Forced laughter is rarely good of its own accord. In any event, artistic director Edward Coffield has assembled a fine cast with performers who do their best to elevate Gordon-Solmon’s misguided effort. Coffield directs in an easygoing fashion, allowing his players to develop their characters as well as the script allows. A true highlight is the warm and amusing encounter between Eva and Seth. She’s a sad-sack, second-choice kind of woman, at least in her own mind, while he’s a decent guy who’s coming to terms with the fact that his
wife has long ago lost interest in him, even to the point she’s ready to bring her lover to the reception. Frankie Ferrari and Ryan Lawson-Maeske are each affecting and effective in their touching portrayals of these two kindred spirits, who even share a love of Top Chef as a TV series. Their height difference accentuates the comedy of their physical encounter. As Dave, Will Bonfiglio proves that he can portray a cad as convincingly as the numerous good-hearted characters he’s assumed in other shows, while Delaney Piggins has her own poignant moments as Michelle, the bridesmaid whose desperation for romance takes a sad and forlorn turn. Graham Emmons brings out all the small-minded spite of Adam, who quotes ABBA lyrics to deliberately antagonize his bride but then just as impulsively sweeps her away in mutual carnal fervor. As Nicole, Jessica Kadish captures the bride’s haughty, arrogant instincts with carefully targeted insults for pretty much everyone she encounters. Craig Neuman introduces us to the sad goings-on as the borderline senile rabbi, with a silly cameo at the show’s conclusion that would be tender if it weren’t so ridiculous. Again, though, it’s not the performance but the material at fault. Completing the cast – and giving the show many of its too few fine moments – are Millie Eidelman, Abby Goldstein and Lydia Mae Foss as the amusing and inquisitive flower girls. The cast works hard, the offstage artists put together a well-wrought effort and director Coffield does his best to leaven this sluggish comedy. In this case, however, the whole is decidedly less than the sum of its parts.

Left Bank Books and the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum welcome French novelist CATHERINE CUSSET to the Mad Art Gallery in St. Louis’ Soulard neighborhood for a discussion and signing of her new novel, Life of David Hockney. Born in 1937 in a small town in the north of England, Hockney had to fight to become an artist. After he left his home in Bradford for the Royal College of Art in London, his career flourished, but he continued to struggle with a sense of not belonging. This loneliness came from his homosexuality, which had yet to be decriminalized, and his inclination for a figurative style of art not sufficiently “contemporary” to be valued. With clear, vivid prose, this meticulously researched novel draws an intimate, moving portrait of the most famous living English painter. Free. 7 p.m. left-bank.com.

The Wine Life WHAT I AM DRINKING NOW… By Stanley Browne
2018 SLO DOWN WINES, SEND NUDES, PINOT NOIR ROSÉ – SONOMA COAST, CALIFORNIA Grape: 100% Pinot Noir Winemaker: Brandon Allen Approximate Retail Price: $20 Website: slodownwines.com TASTING NOTES: Color: Very pale – grandma’s guestbathroom shell pink Aroma: Deceptively aromatic; white cherry Popsicle, strawberries on a beach and a peach Jolly Rancher stuck to your tooth Taste: Like a pink elephant in ballet slippers; dances on the palate with divine grace, spotlighting wild mulberry and stone fruit with surprising highlights of melon and white grapefruit
S
lo Down Wines began its journey into the wide, wide world of wine a decade or so ago with 73 cases of a zinfandel, syrah and merlot blend called Sexual Chocolate.
In the years since, this boutique winery has added four more wines: Broken Dreams chardonnay, Stand Out Bordeaux blend (usually containing about 1 percent magic, as the label dictates), Love Hammer cabernet sauvignon and the newest addition to the family, Send Nudes pinot noir rosé. Slo Down Wines carefully sources its fruit, buying mostly from producers in California’s Napa Valley and Sonoma. Winemaker/entrepreneur/teddy bear Brandon Allen has created an incredibly entertaining universe and persona that poke fun both at himself and at the sometimes overly serious world of wine. Of course, no matter what kind of marketing a winery may use – humorously dry or risqué – it wouldn’t be able to continue to grow in popularity and production if the wines themselves weren’t delicious. And there, Slo Down Wines really shines. Every wine Allen has added through the years has matched the last in taste, and no vintage has ever fallen short. To quote the
website: “Seriously good wine that doesn’t take itself too seriously.” Debuting this year to the world, Send Nudes comes as a welcome addition to the already-saturated market of dry rosés. Fitting into a category pursued by a more specific audience in search of the “palest rosé,” Send Nudes may well surprise drinkers fostering expectations based on its color, with a vibrant, full nose and tantalizing yet dry palate. Always giggleworthy and great conversation-starters, Send Nudes in particular and Slo Down Wines in general provide a welcome breath of fresh air and make drinking wine downright fun. Food (and Other) Pairings: Send Nudes would pair nicely (or naughtily) with a delightful salmon salad, Starburst candies, day drinking, yacht-rock radio, online dating, cliff diving, solar eclipses – pretty much anything.

A local couple has been taking an unrivaled architectural adventure with three structures – all the while inviting area residents to join them.
I
n an extraordinarily intriguing fashion, area artists Pat and Carol Schuchard have lately been exploring the interrelations between their métier and architecture through a trio of highprofile event spaces. Those three spaces constitute distinct marvels of modernity: Maplewood’s glitzy Majorette, St. Louis’ Louis C. Spiering-designed Boo Cat Club and, perhaps most prominently, Das Bevo – the latest incarnation of the Busch dynasty’s beloved Bevo Mill on the South Side. Over time, the Schuchards have accrued artistic gravitas both nationally and internationally. As a studio artist here for more than three decades, Carol Schuchard has exhibited in domestic and foreign galleries and museums alike. So, too, has her husband, who has earned particular acclaim for his portraiture. Prior to his 2007 retirement as a professor of painting in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, Pat Schuchard also served there as Des Lee Endowed Chair for Community Collaboration. “My father knew carpentry and built things – I studied art and did rudimentary carpentry, building frames for paintings and such in my studio,” Pat Schuchard says, before enumerating various works crafted over time. “These architectural projects, as well as studio paintings, sculpture, portrait paintings and more, were coming out of the same studio. I think it’s all art with an alwaysexpanding palette.”
Carol Schuchard wryly echoes her husband in contemplating what led the two of them to contemplate turning to event spaces after such lengthy careers in fine art. “It’s seemingly counterintuitive that 30 years of solitary studio work and exhibits could seamlessly move toward development of historic buildings,” she says. “Both of these artistic activities demand one’s personal attraction to beauty. “Renovation and revival of large, unloved buildings with hope for creative renewal is a more public statement of artful endeavor. When asked if I’m ‘still making art’? Yes!” Carol Schuchard says her prior experience with similar projects was confined to renovations of old homes, before continuing, “But I always had a fascination and love for St. Louis’ rich stock of neglected and beautiful architecture.” Pat Schuchard adds: “No matter what, I think you always have to become a fast study, with new things coming your way and amazing opportunities. We start with a deep affection for a building, the neighborhood and an elation with possibility. What business can we integrate into the space and neighborhood that would be useful and successful?” The couple’s architectural adventure began in 2013 with the purchase of the structure that would become the Boo Cat Club. Carol Schuchard recalls her initial reaction to that structure in less-thanglowing terms.
“The main obstacle was the proportion of low ceilings and the very large space. It was just off. There was no easy fix. Pat was certain part of the roof must be raised, and the only answer for me was ‘Sure, honey.’ We added a clerestory to one-fourth of the roof, adding height and light, volume – and beauty.”

“The first look at Boo Cat – originally the St. Louis Artists’ Guild – was not love at first sight,” she says. “The smell, dead birds, decades of debris and neglect blinded me to the extraordinary beauty. Pat, thankfully, was immediately drawn to the potential – now a breathtaking revival of Louis Spiering’s significant contribution to our St. Louis architecture.” Characterizing that structure as “both grand and modest at the same time,” Pat Schuchard comments on the Boo Cat Club: “It’s amazing how much can be accomplished by subtraction. … Built in 1907 for St. Louis society, the building contains a theater and a ballroom, as well as a mysterious arched lower level we call the Catacombs. Our job here was not so much to invent as to uncover.” Next came the Maplewood structure. “Majorette was a much more open project,” Pat Schuchard says. “The building itself was lackluster and degraded from years of bad renovations and disparate uses – furniture store, call center, Lions Club, bingo hall. We raised the roof, literally, with the intention of building a grand, open space.” His wife expands on that. “Majorette – if there was a bit of inherent beauty here, it was obscured by its [then-]current use as a call center,” Carol Schuchard remarks, again wryly. “Rows and rows and rows of depressing cubicles and screens and tattered motivational posters – this made the project both fun and daunting. “The main obstacle was the proportion of low ceilings and the very large space. It was just off. There was no easy fix. Pat was certain part of the roof must be raised, and the only answer for me was ‘Sure, honey.’ We added a clerestory to one-fourth of the roof, adding height and light, volume – and beauty. “The best discovery was finding extensive use of turn-of-thecentury Rookwood [Pottery] art pottery tile under the musty old carpeting. This valuable, historic tile was covered with mastic and required months of removal. Also found: a beautiful tile fireplace behind 1950s paneling.” Last but scarcely least, the couple launched in May 2017 Das Bevo in one of the metro area’s most revered structures, a landmark that has captured an incalculable number of hearts since its construction in 1916 as a waystation for beer baron August Busch Sr. between his downtown St. Louis brewery and Grant’s Farm, his home in south St. Louis County’s Grantwood Village. “Bevo Mill is one of the most-loved places in St. Louis,” Pat Schuchard says. “Carol and I both have personal stories with the place going back 50 years. Even so, we didn’t anticipate the love and attachment and affection expressed about the place. “A hundred years ago, August Busch called Bevo Mill ‘a country club in the city.’ The building is as close to original as we could practically make it.” In general, Carol Schuchard also dwells briefly on the aesthetics of the couple’s recent architectural adventure. “Reimagining these historically significant buildings involves reverence and awe, as well as a feeling of such good fortune to be working on these 100-yearold masterpieces,” she says. “The imperative demanded by the architecture often overwhelmed our own sensibilities – the result, a sweet collaboration with important history.” Boo Cat Club, 812 Union Blvd., St. Louis, 314-224-5521, boocatclub.com Das Bevo, 4749 Gravois Ave., St. Louis, 314-832-2251, dasbevo.com
